Spoilers for "The Patient" follow
On October 25, 2022, "The Patient" concluded its 10-episode run. The mini-series tells the story of Dr. Alan Strauss (Steve Carrel), a therapist held captive by one of his patients, Sam Fortner (Domhnall Gleeson). It turns out Sam didn't disclose a pretty big detail during their sessions — he's a serial killer. As my /Film colleagues have said, serial killer stories have been done to death. To stand apart, "The Patient" adds a new wrinkle: Sam wants to stop killing. He's abducted Strauss not to murder him, but to be his in-house therapist. Early on, Alan tells Sam that anyone who's willing to go to therapy can be helped. The story is designed to test his thesis.
Due to the confined setting, the series relies on flashbacks to flesh out Alan. We learn how his relationship with his son Ezra (Andrew Leeds) fell apart after Ezra converted to Orthodox Judaism.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Season 1, Episode 3 of The Patient, “Issues.”] FX‘s The Patient takes the patient-psychologist relationship to an unparalleled level through the disturbing dynamic between Alan Strauss (Steve Carell) and Sam Fortner (Domhnall Gleeson). Held captive by the patient with murderous urges, Alan is chained up in a well-furnished basement where he has a bed, is fed a variety of meals, and is forced to sit through therapy sessions with the threateningly persistent Sam. Through the darkness though are glimpses from Alan’s past which offer a little more lightness, thanks to Laura Niemi who plays Alan’s wife Beth Strauss. It is revealed early on in the series that Beth died before Alan was taken captive, but her memories live on in him and play an important role in his journey. (Credit: FX) “It taps upon grief, and how people grieve the loss of something,” Niemi tells TV Insider. “It also taps into that...

At first, FX’s new drama “The Patient” is by and large a two-hander centered on psychologist Alan Strauss (Steve Carell) and the serial-killing patient, Sam Fortner (Domhnall Gleeson), who abducts him in a desperate attempt to stop himself from murdering again. But as the taut thriller series unfolds, it also expands, introducing a handful of key players beyond the walls of Alan’s prison/Sam’s basement, be it through memory, imagination, or Sam’s constantly tense trips back to the outside world.

Depressed therapist meets obsessed patient with homicidal tendencies. What could go wrong?
That’s the device in the new limited series “The Patient,” from “The Americans” showrunners Joel Fields and Joseph Weisberg with Chris Long as the series director. Over ten short episodes, widower Dr. Alan Strauss (Steve Carrell) treats high functioning serial killer Sam Fortner (Domhnall Gleeson) in his Los Angeles office. The tension escalates when Sam abducts Strauss, taking the good doctor home for intensive daily therapy – and shackling the shrink to the bed.
Can their discussions in the remote basement in-law apartment strangle Sam’s demons? Will Dr. Strauss emerge victorious, unscathed and with the subject of a mind-blowing memoir? We shall see.
This “Hannibal” set up, the dramatic but artificial precipitating event, seems like a long way to go to drill down into what makes killer and healer tick.

At the center of FX’s upcoming psychothriller “The Patient” is a fraught “cat-and-mouse” game with Steve Carell’s therapist Alan Strauss as an unwilling participant. The show’s premise rests on the kidnapping of a successful psychiatrist who is then held hostage by his serial killer patient, Sam Fortner (Domhnall Gleeson), desperate to overcome his compulsion to kill.
“It’s sheer terror,” Carell told TheWrap during the series’ red carpet premiere at NeueHouse on Sunset Blvd. “It’s a guy who’s trying to figure his way out, while at the same time going through a lot of internal conversation about his family — he’s mourning his wife, his estranged son — all of these other components ‘cause he’s got a lot of time to think about them.”

During a recent therapy session, I told my doctor that I was watching a new series called The Patient, where Steve Carell plays a psychologist kidnapped by a serial killer, who hopes Carell can cure him of his homicidal impulses.
“That sounds funny!” my doctor said with a laugh.
“Oh, it’s not at all,” I warned him. “Intentionally so.”
I do not suspect he will enjoy The Patient, in the same way that surgeons typically can’t stand to watch hospital dramas, cops dislike police shows, etc. But as...

While most showrunners are content to use Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” for soundtrack shorthand, Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg prefer slightly deeper cuts from the Canadian singer-spiritualist.
The duo potently utilized “Who By Fire,” with its ties to the Hebrew “Unetaneh Tokef” prayer, at the climax of the fourth season of The Americans. They return to Cohen again with a song that I won’t spoil featured pivotally in their new FX limited series The Patient, which will air exclusively on Hulu.
It’s easy to see why Fields and Weisberg respond to Cohen (or why their music supervisor thinks their shows and Cohen’s songs are a good match). Like Cohen, Fields and Weisberg are engaged in their own blending of the profane and the sacred, using the trappings of pulpy genres as a delivery mechanism for richer, more haunted storytelling that...

“The Americans,” Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg’s previous show for FX, built tension according to a methodical pace. Its pleasures lay in a rigorous willingness to delay catharsis; Fields and Weisberg’s team of writers seemed actively to resist giving viewers quick and easy satisfaction, preferring to build scenes, episodes and arcs that stretched out according to their own rhythms.
And their follow-up series, “The Patient,” an FX production airing exclusively on Hulu, suggests that success has prompted them to lean so far into this method that they’ve lost balance. A languorous 10 episodes are spent telling a story that might have, in another era, made for a tidy 90-minute movie. The collision of Steve Carell and Domhnall Gleeson as, respectively, a therapist and the subject who kidnaps him, seems so hopelessly insoluble — with Gleeson’s character demanding a cure for his beyond-repair psyche — that many viewers will likely...

A therapist, Alan Strauss, is held prisoner by a patient, Sam Fortner, who reveals himself to be a serial killer. Sam has an unusual therapeutic demand for Alan: curb his homicidal urges.
That’s the premise behind The Patient, a 10-episode limited series debuting Aug. 30 on Hulu. Its official trailer is out today.
Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg (The Americans) are the team behind the series, serving as cocreators and EPs.
In order to survive, Alan (Steve Carell) must unwind Sam’s disturbed mind (played by Domhnall Gleeson) and stop him from killing again… but Sam refuses to address critical topics, like his mother, “Candace” (Linda Emond). Alone in captivity, Alan excavates his own past through memories of his old therapist, “Charlie” (David Alan Grier), and grapples with waves of his own repressed troubles – the recent death of his wife, “Beth” (Laura Niemi), and the painful estrangement from his religious son,...

"Successful therapy requires a safe environment, without anything like fear hanging over every session." FX on Hulu has revealed an official trailer for a very creepy, intriguing mini-series titled The Patient, from TV creators Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg. This plays a lot like a feature film, but in the streaming era now they're just cutting it up into a few episodes and debuting it as a mini-series instead. "He's been held captive by a serial killer who wants his help." Uh oh, this sounds discomforting. A psychotherapist who recently lost his wife, finds himself held prisoner by a serial killer with an unusual request – to curb his homicidal urges. Steve Carell co-stars as the therapist, who is also struggling with understanding himself at this point in his life; Domhnall Gleeson co-stars as his patient Sam, who can't seem to control his murderous tendencies. Steve Carell and Domhnall Gleeson star as a therapist and the serial killer client holding him hostage in the newly released trailer for FX and Hulu’s 10-episode limited series, “The Patient.” The project is set to premiere Aug. 30.
The chilling clip features earlier sessions between lan Strauss (Carell) and Sam Fortner (Gleeson) as the latter describes his quick temper. What seemingly begins as a routine session with a patient eventually devolves into a nightmare, as Fortner reveals himself to be a serial killer who demands help to curb his homicidal urges. “Successful therapy requires a safe environment without anything like fear hanging over every session,” Carell’s character says, as threatening and nightmarish images of chains, bodies and panic rooms flash onscreen.

After a post-“Office” hiatus from the small screen, Steve Carell’s TV comeback continues to boom. Domhnall Gleeson channels Hannibal Lecter in the first trailer for “The Patient,” the upcoming FX limited series co-starring Steve Carell.
Created by Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg, who previously worked together on the acclaimed FX drama “The Americans,” “The Patient” focuses on the relationship between Alexander Strauss (Carell), a well-regarded psychotherapist, and his new patient Sam Fortner (Gleeson). When Sam takes Strauss hostage, he reveals himself to be a serial killer, and asks the doctor to cure him of his murderous tendencies. As Strauss reluctantly begins treatment, the experience unearths demons and traumas of his own, blurring the line between the patient and therapist. The trailer begins with a normal therapy session between the two before fast-forwarding to the hostage situation, with Strauss trapped via chain in Sam’s house.

The Pearsons may be gone, but they’re certainly not forgotten. Co-written by Fields and Weisberg, in The Patient, a psychotherapist (Carell) finds himself held prisoner by a serial killer (Gleeson) with an unusual request: curb his homicidal urges. "In a perfect world, we make perfect choices. In the real world, we make real choices." Netflix has debuted an official trailer for the highly anticipated film by acclaimed filmmaker Dee Rees, director of Mudbound and Pariah previously. This is premiering at the Sundance Film Festival before being released by Netflix. The Last Thing He Wanted is an adaptation of Joan Didion's novel about an intrepid journalist named Elena McMahon. Anne Hathaway stars as Elena, a veteran Washington D.C. journalist who loses the thread of her own narrative when a guilt-propelled errand for her father thrusts her from byline to subject in the very story she is trying to break. Also starring Ben Affleck, Willem Dafoe, Rosie Perez, Toby Jones, Mel Rodriguez, Edi Gathegi, Carlos Leal, Laura Niemi, and Onata Aprile. This looks like a riveting thriller, another great ode to journalism and the willpower of those who...

I recently joined my fellow Gold Derby contributors Riley Chow and Zach Laws to dissect the drama guest acting races (watch the video slugfest above). Everything took a rather unexpected turn in the spring after the TV academy moved “American Horror Story: Apocalypse” from limited to drama, and Hulu submitted the final three “orphaned episodes” of “The Handmaid’s Tale’s” second season that aired outside of last year’s eligibility period.
SEEIs ‘The Handmaid’s Tale”s Emmy gamble a genius move?
“This is between Jessica Lange, Carice van Houten and Cherry Jones,” I boldly proclaim regarding the drama guest actress race. While our panel is an agreement that all three are safe bets to get nominated, along with perennial nominee Cicely Tyson (“How to Get Away With Murder”), we slightly disagree on who’s the likely front-runner: I’m putting my money on Lange (“American Horror Story: Apocalypse...

Laura Niemi has had a 20-year acting career, but 2018 may be her best yet.
After a one-year hiatus, Niemi returned to This Is Us Season 3 and will play a much larger role with the further exploration of Jack's childhood and time in Vietnam.
This Is Us is just the cherry on top of a delicious cake for this seasoned actress. She also landed a role in a Netflix film featuring Hollywood A-listers Anne Hathway and Ben Affleck.
I had the opportunity to talk with Laura Niemi about her role on This Is Us this season and what we can expect from her character moving forward. She also provides a small tease about her upcoming Netflix film.
Enjoy the full interview below, which has been slightly modified for content.
So I'm curious to know, what attracted you to This Is Us and specifically the role of Marilyn Pearson?
Well, Dan Fogelman.

Originally titled Lake Alice, this unassuming horror film is actually the latest in a long line of seasonal slashers set at that most festive of times… Christmas.
Lake Tomahawk – from former actor turned director Ben Milliken (Newcastle, Blue Crush 2) – follows Ryan Emerson (Schmidt) who, while meeting his girlfriend Sarah’s (Tudor) family for the first time, must prove his intentions and win the approval of her father, Greg (O’Brien), while he masks his jealousy for Sarah’s ex-fling, Tyler (Eaton). As the Thomas family settles in, things start to happen around the cabin; strange footprints by the windows, noises from outside, and a bitter animosity from the locals, including the law enforcement. As a blizzard descends on Lake Alice so does the evil…...

Chasity Bites is a film that has been on my radar for quite some time; ever since I saw the awesome poster designed by Rebel Rouser artist and illustrator Nathan Thomas Milliner for the films screening at the Dances With Films festival way back in June 2013. Of course it’s been over 18 months since then and all has gone quite… Or so I thought. Thankfully independent UK distributors Safecracker Pictures have seen fit to debut the film – on VOD, followed by a DVD release in a couple of months – here in Blighty.
First off, having finally sat down and watched the film, can someone tell me why I never realised it starred one of my favourite actresses, Alison Scagliotti,...
