The 2000 survival drama Cast Away, starring Tom Hanks and Helen Hunt, was one of the best movies of not just the actor’s career but also Robert Zemeckis, who produced and directed the movie. The movie won Hanks an Academy Award nomination, and Zemeckis was praised for his artistry and vision.
The film, though not shot in a linear chronology, managed to capture the essence of the story perfectly, and most of it was thanks to Hanks’ dedication to his performance.
Tom Hanks in Cast Away
The film was shot within three months of work but was left in hiatus for more than a year in between. Which was both a good and a bad thing.
A movie in production being in hiatus for so long, though not ideal, helped Tom Hanks in achieving his desired physical goals for his character. And Zemeckis, like a pro producer, used the same...

Jason Momoa returned as guest host for the latest episode of "Saturday Night Live" this weekend. The actor first hosted back in December 2018 ahead of the release of "Aquaman," and now returns a few weeks before audiences can see Arthur Curry on the big screen again in "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom."
For one of the sketches featuring Momoa, "SNL" chose to parody a different kind of story about a man and the sea: Robert Zemeckis' "Cast Away," starring Tom Hanks as everyman Chuck Noland, who spends four years stranded on a desert island after a plane crash. After he's rescued, he finds the world has moved on without him — even his girlfriend Kelly (Helen Hunt) has married someone else. Chuck and Kelly share a tender moment in the rain, but decide they can't be together again.
It's a simple enough premise, evoking "Robinson Crusoe," and you don't need to...

An Australian man was found floating in the middle of the ocean last week – authorities now say that he had been lost at sea for nearly three months.
Tim Shaddock, 51, and his dog, Bella, set out to sail to French Polynesia from Mexico in April. A heavy storm and rough seas, however, damaged their boat and left them with no electricity, leaving the pair to fend for themselves in the vast Pacific Ocean.
Shaddock and Bella survived the long weeks by eating raw fish and drinking rainwater.
Although the storm caused Shaddock’s vessel to lose electricity, he told Australia’s 9News that he was still able to keep in touch with his family, doing a “check in with [his] sister every sunset and sunrise” as he was hoping to return to land.
“I’ve been in good communication with the family through all this and while I was out there,...

It sometimes feels like "Cast Away" doesn't get as much love as it deserves. It's certainly well-regarded by both critics and audiences, but it almost seems a bit forgotten. Yes, it still airs on cable pretty regularly, but it's not a film that comes up in day-to-day cinema conversation often. After all, when people talk about the best Tom Hanks movies and performances, they tend to go right to films like "Philadelphia," "Saving Private Ryan," and "Forrest Gump," when the best performance of his career may very well have been as Chuck Noland in "Cast Away." Considering the fact he spends most of the movie completely isolated, and his primary scene partner is a volleyball, the movie is a testament to his star power and acting talent.
And as great as Hanks was in the film, and as satisfying (and wildly successful) a film as "Cast Away" wound up being,...

At the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, TV is invading the schedule in a whole new way. The Park City film fest has previously dabbled in what’s possible on the small screen, but this year marks the launch of the Indie Episodics section — which will spotlight TV pilots that mostly lack mainstream distribution.
The selections include “America to Me,” a new docu-series by “Hoop Dreams” director Steve James; as well as “The Mortified Guide,” a screen adaptation of the popular stage show “Mortified,” spotlighting the most embarrassing true stories of adolescence. There’s also “This Close,” showcasing star/creators Josh Feldman and Shoshannah Stern (both of whom are deaf), and “Franchesca,” featuring digital star and “The Nightly Show” writer/contributor Franchesca Ramsey.
This marks a major change for Sundance, and a renewed commitment to independent television. While Sundance has featured TV programming since the premiere of “Top of the Lake” in...

Director Kim Sung-hoon elevates his disaster flick from predictable to palatable with offbeat details: a deaf Messiah, a fresh cream birthday cake, a classical music radio station and a pug dog.
The Tunnel has echoes of A Hard Day in the opening scene where Jung-soo (played by Ha Jung-woo) talks on the phone while behind the wheel. In lieu of a corpse, the titular tunnel and he collide. As he drives through the tunnel, it rumbles and collapses, and his car is wrecked and pinned under the debris. His phone, a link to the outside world, has 78 percent life left. He starts to call his car coated with a grey blanket of dust home, imbibes water like it’s an edible Listerine and marks off the days in the manner of Chuck Noland. No sign of the salvage until he winds up being well-acquainted with classical music.
