“We’re all blessed in some ways but also cursed to have the amount of legacy on this show because it means that you have almost 56 years of creative material to draw from, but that also means you have a lot of rules and regulations and canon that you have to adhere to. So there’s a kind of pressure to it as well,” notes “Star Trek: Picard” showrunner Terry Matalas about the technical details that have accumulated throughout “Trek” history. We talked to Matalas for our “Making Of” panel series along with costume designer Michael Crow, makeup department head James MacKinnon, prosthetics designer Vincent Van Dyke and visual effects supervisor Jason Zimmerman. Watch our roundtable discussion above.

“Star Trek” hasn’t been recognized by the Emmys for acting since the original series aired in the 1960s. Back then Leonard Nimoy earned three bids for his iconic role as Spock. But no actors from the franchise have been nominated since. Will that change with the third and final season of “Star Trek: Picard”? The Paramount+ series submitted the following 12 actors for consideration on the Emmy ballot.

Fitting an interview into a cinematographer’s schedule can be daunting, especially a Dp working on a television show that shoots nine months out of the year. You often end up chatting after a long shoot day or during a mid-day tech scout break. Orm in the case of Gotham cinematographer Crescenzo Notarile, you talk a few hours before their name is read at the 68th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards. Notarile earned his Emmy nomination for his work on Gotham, Fox’s origin story tracing the early days of cop Jim Gordon and the various heroes and villains that reside in […]...

“Gotham,” the Fox/DC “Batman” prequel created by Bruno Heller, took a decidedly darker and more daring turn in Season 2. And cinematographer Crescenzo Notarile was rewarded with an Emmy nomination for elevating the “Azrael” episode, starring B.D. Wong as Dr. Hugo Strange.
That’s because in bringing Galavan [James Frain] back from the dead as Azrael, “we got darker and had more fun,” said Notarile. Azrael then becomes a monstrous instrument to prevent vigilante ex-cop James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) from stopping Strange. He has an opportunity to redeem himself in trying to take down Strange, who was responsible for the murder of the parents of Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz), and has turned Arkham Asylum into a Frankenstein-like power trip to control Gotham.
The way Notarile shot Azrael was the antithesis of the kitschy look he gave Galavan. And because the dramatic stakes were raised in “Azrael,” Notarile could take more stylistic freedom.
