As theaters regain their footing, they’re making baby steps. The good news: for the first time since March, 10 first-run films played in theaters in the U.S. and Canada, grossing $100,000 or more. And most drops from the past week were under 30%, which is above average: Warner Bros.’ “Tenet” dropped 26%, with few new theaters. Such small drops suggest an uptick in interest in going to theaters.
The bad news: there is little new to be seen. And disturbingly, on the specialty side, even though they played hundreds of theaters, Bleecker Street’s “The Secrets We Keep” and IFC’s “The Nest” failed to pull even minimal adult audiences.
This weekend last year, all films grossed $123 million. Led by three new openers, the lowest total for a Top Ten title was just under $1.5 million. This year, with something over 3,000 locations open (exact number unknown), a tiny increase over last week, total...

In “Infidel,” Jim Caviezel plays Christian blogger Doug Rawlins, who travels to Cairo to participate in a televised conference on religion. The Muslim host seeks commonalities between the two faiths. “We love Jesus Christ,” the man says, after which Doug pauses for a moment, weighing his words, before rejecting the figurative olive branch. “He is God,” Doug says. “And He wants to be your God.” The audience is stunned at Doug’s audacity. Less surprising to all parties, Doug is kidnapped from his hotel room by angry Muslims a few hours later.
The latest film from controversial writer-director Cyrus Nowrasteh (“The Path to 9/11”) actually opens with a forward glimpse of Doug facing a firing squad on a Tehran rooftop, so we know from the jump that his Cairo visit didn’t go well. On the surface, “Infidel” appears to be a straightforward Middle East-set thriller — the kind that reaffirms Americans’ xenophobic impulses,...

A recent survey found that one in five of Americans heavily rely on streaming services to help them cope with the trials and tribulations posed by the coronavirus pandemic. Netflix should be well aware of this fact, too, as their subscriber base has grown tremendously while other businesses – particularly those in the entertainment industry – are currently languishing.
Of course, periods of growth often precede times of rapid decline, and Netflix’s success has not been without its own complications. As more and more regions in the United States are reinstating quarantine, people consume content at faster rates than ever before. And in order to keep their subscribers satisfied, Netflix has tried their best to provide new material.
Today, for instance, August 27th, the streamer has added a total of 5 new movies and 1 new TV show, and the complete list is as follows:

"The days of Entebbe are long over..." An official trailer has debuted for a kidnapping thriller titled Infidel, from American filmmaker Cyrus Nowrasteh. Inspired by true events, the film was shot on location in the Middle East. An American man, played by Jim Caviezel, is kidnapped after a friend invites him to Cairo to speak out about recent militant uprisings. He is eventually taken to Iran and imprisoned on spying charges. His wife heads to Iran after hearing the news, determined to get him back since the government won't help. This also stars Claudia Karvan, Hal Ozsan, Stelio Savante, and Bijan Daneshmand. An important warning - this film is being released with D'Souza Media, a known extremist and dangerous propagandist who supports xenophobia and hate. It's obviously a true story anyway, but the film may have a hateful side. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Cyrus Nowrasteh's Infidel, direct...

A haunting coming-of-age tale (and one hell of a murder mystery) set against the backdrop of an East Coast amusement park, Stephen King's Joyland (originally published by Hard Case Crime in 2013) is being developed as a TV series by Freeform:
Press Release: Freeform announced today that it has put into development “Joyland,” a series based on the Stephen King novel of the same name. “Joyland” tells the story of Devin, a college student who takes a summer job at an amusement park in a North Carolina tourist town, confronts the legacy of a vicious murder, the fate of a dying child and the way both will change his life forever.
“We are honored to be working with Stephen King – a master storyteller who understands the importance of culturally embedded tales that resonate with audiences on a deeply personal level,” said Karey Burke, executive vice president, Programming and Development, Freeform.

Another Stephen King project is going into development! Freeform is set to produce a new series based on King’s crime novel Joyland.
Joyland is set in a small-town North Carolina amusement park in 1973, and tells the story of the summer in which college student Devin Jones, “a college student who takes a summer job at an amusement park in a North Carolina tourist town, confronts the legacy of a vicious murder, the fate of a dying child and the way both will change his life forever.”
This is a great story and Stephen King has said that it’s one of his favorites:
"I love crime, I love mysteries, and I love ghosts. That combo made Hard Case Crime the perfect venue for this book, which is one of my favorites. I also loved the paperbacks I grew up with as a kid.”

God knows who’ll enjoy this dull, cheap-looking and laughably scripted account of what might have happened in Jesus’s childhood
Now I understand why Jesus’s childhood remains such a mystery: the story is unbelievably boring.
At least that’s if you believe The Young Messiah, Cyrus Nowrasteh’s dreary adaptation of Anne Rice’s ultimate origin story, Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt. The film opens with a statement that not much is known about the years in which Joseph and Mary of Nazareth fled Roman soldiers who, at the urging of Herod the Great, were killing Jewish children to prevent a prophesied messiah. Now, for the first time, we’re going to see what might have taken place during those years. That is, if you can stay awake.

'Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan' Director Nicholas Meyer Is Writing a Cold War Space Race TV Series
Primeridian Entertainment announced today that it will be producing and financing a new television series about the post-World War II space race between the United States and the Ussr. The project will purportedly span the time between the collapse of Nazi Germany through the 1960s, covering the contentious competition between the two superpowers and their technological successes and failures. The newly launched company, who at Cannes announced a feature about Soviet dissident Alexander Solzhenitsyn to be written and directed by Cyrus Nowrasteh ("The Stoning of Soraya M."), have hired Nicholas Meyer to write the pilot. Meyer, who was nominated for an Academy Award for adapting his own novel to screen for 1976 Sherlock Holmes film "The Seven-Per-Cent Solution," directed "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" and "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country," though he only received screenplay credit for the latter. The yet untitled TV project has several expert advisors on board.

Late last year, we learned that Chris Columbus. 1492 Pictures and Cj Entertainment had acquired the rights to adapt Anne Rice's book Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt for a feature film. Now it looks like the search for Jesus has begun with a worldwide online casting call. Rice's story follows Christ when he was seven years old and just beginning to come to understand his divine nature. The fictional account is told from Jesus' perspective as his family departs Egypt and heads to Nazareth. As we reported last December, Cyrus Nowrasteh will direct the film, based on a screenplay he co-wrote with Betsy Nowrasteh. It's expected to start shooting in Italy in March 2013, and it looks like they're ready to cast their Jesus. Via PRWeb, casting directors Suzanne Smith, Elizabeth Barnes, and Corbin Bronson are going through Cast It Talent to host an online casting call for the part.
