"This acting, this was always your dream?" Roadside Attractions has revealed an official trailer for an indie comedy titled Accidental Texan, made by storyboard artist / filmmaker Mark Lambert Bristol. Obviously enough, this originally premiered at the 2023 Dallas Film Festival last year, with a stop at the Heartland Film Festival in Indiana as well. The film is adapted from a novel called "Chocolate Lizards", which was the original title for this before they changed it to Accidental Texan. Fresh-faced actor Erwin finds himself stranded in Texas after a film shoot gone wrong, where he's taken under the wing of a nearly bankrupt oil driller. They set off on a wild Texas adventure to outwit a corrupt oil company to hit pay dirt before Merle's dreams are foreclosed, partnering with a kind waitress along the way. The ensemble cast features Rudy Pankow as Erwin, Carrie-Anne Moss as Faye, Thomas Haden Church as Merle,...

Filmmaker and theater director Stuart Gordon passed on March 24, as his family confirmed to Variety. The cause of death was not released as of press time. Gordon was 72.
Best known for his directorial debut Re-Animator, as well as indie horror favorites From Beyond and Abel Ferrara’s Body Snatchers, the latter of which he wrote, Gordon was also the co-creator of the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids franchise. He wrote the first film with an eye to direct, and he would go on to produce the sequel Honey, I Blew Up the Kid and write on the TV series.
Gordon was born in Chicago on Aug. 11, 1947. He apprenticed as a commercial artist before majoring in theater at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Earlier this summer I wrote a review for Arrow’s release of The Bird with the Crystal Plumage. I didn’t review the film itself because I assumed the readers who might click on the review already knew the film well and were mostly concerned with whether or not it was worth picking up another copy of the film. I’m going to make the same assumption about Re-Animator, perhaps the only film in the history of cinema to ask the MPAA to surrender its R-rating so it could be released in unrated form (actually, re-released).
The film itself is a horror-comedy classic based on one of H.P. Lovecraft’s lesser known works entitled Herbert West: Re-Animator. At the time of its theatrical release it was considered cutting edge in the area of gore as well as altogether outrageousness. I suspect Lovecraft, who was so adept...

Earlier this month, we reported the return of Re-animator: The Musical to Los Angeles; the former staple of splattery musical horror from the mind of genre icon Stuart Gordon and composer Mark Nutter. It has just been announced that Re-Animator: The Musical will return for new performances in Hollywood this October with new performers and brand new songs:
““Re-Animator ™ the Musical” tells the story of Herbert West, a brilliant young medical student who has created a glowing green serum that can bring the dead back to life. What should be a medical breakthrough results in hideous monstrosities and ghastly consequences. “I guess he just wasn’t fresh enough,” is West’s constant refrain in his quest for fresh subjects. Graham Skipper, who won a Best New Performer Award at the New York Musical Theater Festival for his crowd-pleasing turn, returns as the demented young genius.
And operatic Jesse Merlin is back as Dr. Carl Hill who loses his head for Meg, the dean’s beautiful daughter, only to actually lose it at the hands of Herbert West. But thanks to the glowing re-agent,...

Re-Animator the Musical has been re-animated, with new songs and new performers, just in time for Halloween. Stuart Gordon is back in the director's chair working from a book he co-penned with Dennis Paoli and William J. Norris. Mark Nutter provided the music and lyrics.
The blood-soaked musical enjoyed an original run in Los Angeles in 2011 (here's an event report I penned at the time). The new production will see Graham Skipper and Jesse Merlin reprise their roles at Herbert West and Dr. Hill, respectively.

With the classic Re-Animator getting its Blu-ray reissue this week, we talk to its director about this and his other genre films...
Interview
Re-Animator landed like a firecracker in the middle of 80s horror cinema. A wild, vibrant adaptation of the Hp Lovecraft tale, Herbert West-Reanimator, it was both extremely funny and remarkably close to the writer’s source text. Jeffrey Combs plays the darting-eyed Herbert West, a gifted yet utterly mad young medical student who invents a serum which brings the dead back to kicking, screaming life.
A sprightly Bruce Abbott and Barbara Crampton play his fellow students, who can only watch in horror as their Miskatonic University campus fills up with angry revenant corpses from the morgue, while David Gale is brilliantly glowering as Dr Hill, West’s nemesis.
With glowing reviews from mainstream critics, Re-Animator quickly became a cult favourite, establishing Stuart Gordon’s reputation as a talented genre director.

Following successful runs in L.A. and Chicago, the demented holiday musical revue Christmas Smackdown (a.k.a. A few years back, film director Stuart Gordon had the thought that his gore-filled 1985 horror movie Re-Animator might be improved with the addition of some songs. It was an odd idea — but an ultimately successful one. In the spring of 2011, Re-Animator: The Musical opened at Hollywood’s Steve Allen Theater to great reviews (Variety hailed it as “an entertainment of rich rewards and high accomplishment”) and tonight the play officially starts a second run at the Hayworth Theatre, prior to engagements at the New York Musical Theatre Festival and the Edinburgh Festival. One of the most fun times I had last year involved going to a late show of Re-animator, The Musical. We ran a post about it here. Joe even chimed in with his take (though, to my knowledge, we did not attend the same show.) The show was, to state the obvious again, a complete, bloody blast of fun. And it had a good run at the Steve Allen Theater.
Now the show is coming back for a limited engagement at the Hayworth Theater in Downtown Los Angeles. The entire original cast is returning (including George Wendt) for the short 3-month run leading up the the show’s big international tour.

One of the best damned times we have had all year was spent seeing Re-Animator: The Musical on the stage in Los Angeles. It's a shame that the rest of the country is missing out on what is nothing short of a splattery good time; however, you can now at the very least get a sampling of the mayhem!

Movie fans have long loved director Stuart Gordon's Re-Animator, renowned for its twisted sense of humor and copious gore. Now, this horror gem is gaining a whole new audience. Gordon has recently taken his 1985 cult classic and, ahem, re-animated it as Re-Animator: The Musical, a tune-filled stage production that's been packing them in since it opened in February.
Playing at the Steve Allen Theater in Hollywood, Re-Animator: The Musical is directed by Gordon and stars George Wendt, Graham Skipper, Chris L. McKenna, Rachel Avery, Cynthia Carle and Jesse Merlin. Originally booked to run through March 27, the show has done so well that its run has been extended through May 29.
With music and lyrics by songwriter Mark Nutter and a book by Gordon, William J. Norris and frequent Gordon collaborator Dennis Paoli, Re-Animator: The Musical might seem like an unlikely entry in the popular trend of converting film into musical theater,...

We know there are so many web series out there, it's nearly impossible to separate the good from the bad, but for horror fans there are few better than "This Week in Horror" hosted by Matt Raub and Staci Layne Wilson. They're already up to Episode 10, and Staci dropped us a line to let us know that this week's installment should be of special interest to our readers.
On tap in Episode 10 are Jon Bernthal (Shane on AMC's "The Walking Dead") and director Stuart Gordon, who reveals even more scoops about Re-Animator - The Musical, starring George Wendt, Chris L. McKenna, and Jesse Merlin, now playing at The Steve Allen Theater through March 27th.
You can check out the whole "This Week in Horror" video below, but here are some highlights. [Note that Staci's absent from Bernthal's interview, but filling in for her is up-and-coming scream queen Brooke Lewis, who ably assists Matt in grilling him.]
Jon mentions that he brought his guard dogs to the set of "This Week in Horror" to prevent him...

While co-hosting (with festival head Rachel Belofsky and Jonna Jackson) last week’s Screamfest La mixer at Te’Kila and 504 on Hollywood Boulevard (in attendance were horror movers and shakers John Skipp, F. Javier Gutiérrez, Stephen Goldmann, John Michael Elfers, Drina Durazo and more), I caught up with Re-Animator filmmaker Stuart Gordon in order to discuss his current projects as well as the currently previewing play Re-Animator – The Musical.
Opening on March 5th at the Steve Allen Theatre in Hollywood, CA, the stage musical incarnation of Gordon’s 1985 filmic hit (both of which center around Dr. Herbert West, a medical student obsessed with reanimating the dead) runs Friday through Saturday nights through March 27, and Gordon told us of the play over a cocktail amid the boisterous din, “Audiences seem to really like it, which is great! We’re previewing all weekend, and those nights are already sold out, which is a wonderful thing.

Hold on to your head (hardy, har, har)! Re-Animator - The Musical is upon us. At least, it is for you lucky sons of bitches with some sort of proximity to Los Angeles' Steve Allen Theater.
This would be a cool project on its own, but considering that Stuart Gordon is actually directing this sucker, it's a must see. In 1985 Stuart Gordon directed his first feature film and created a sensation. It was “Re-Animator,” a smashing success based on a horror story by H.P. Lovecraft. The film delivered as many laughs as it did screams, making it a cult classic among horror fans, and won a Critic’s Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Now Gordon is back with his co-writers Dennis Paoli and William J. Norris and composer/lyricist Mark Nutter to turn “Re-Animator” into a musical for the stage.
Special effects are being done by the same guys...

Chicago – It wouldn’t be a Jason Statham film if in it he was just fixing cars. In “The Mechanic,” his profession is fixing people. And by fixing, like “The Transporter” he’s again cracking skulls.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
But if you’re going to ask audiences to buy into a remake of the 1972 film by the same name with Charles Bronson originating Jason Statham’s role as Arthur Bishop, a film needs to make it less obvious that it’s just modernizing a 1970s flick for the purposes of making new money on a preexisting script.
While “The Mechanic” takes a page from all other hitman movies and employs every trick in the contract killer book we’ve already seen, the one redeeming difference is Statham’s inner dialogue and his cool, calculated demeanor. Sure, this Jason Statham is again a killer with no back story, but this time he’s also a master of restraint,...

The new Fox series Lone Star will be premiering on Monday, September 20. We previously posted a promo and photos for the season premiere and now we have some sneak peeks for you below.
You should definitely check this series out. I really liked the pilot episode and I’m interested to see how they’ll continue the show from there.
He Can Be Anyone He Wants – Except Himself On The Series Premiere Of “Lone Star” On Monday, September 20, On Fox
Robert/Bob Allen is a charismatic and brilliant schemer who has meticulously constructed two lives in two different parts of Texas. As “Bob,” he lives in Houston and is married to Cat, the beautiful daughter of Clint, the patriarch of an ultra-wealthy Texas oil family. More than 400 miles away in the suburban west Texas town of Midland, he’s “Robert,” living a second life with his sweet, naïve girlfriend, Lindsay.
