John Carney’s musical-comedy “Flora and Son,” which was acquired by Apple Original Films after its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, is one of the streamer’s multiple awards contenders this year, most notably for best original song.
With 18 original songs in the feature, deciding which one to put up for Academy consideration was a daunting task. Variety has learned that Apple will submit the “High Life” track composed by Carney, Gary Clark and star Eve Hewson. The song is performed in the movie by Hewson, Orén Kinlan, Jack Reynor and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Irish short film 'Angel' is making waves on the international festival circuit, having received 13 nominations and six wins over the last few months. Shot in Dublin over two days, the short aims to capture Dublin's raw, dark and inhospitable characters. Ruan Magan produced and directed, with Ned O'Hanlon, ChaCha Seigne, Padraig O'Neill, Tim Morris, Stephen O'Connell and Mark Geary all lending their skills to make the film happen.

Assassin Films and the BBC's 'West is West', the sequel to Damien O'Donnell's 1999 feature 'East is East', is to start production this coming October and features several Irish crew members. The film's Irish contingent includes Peter Robertson as director of photography for the film, Simon Willis is the project's sound record artist and Stephen O'Connell is the film's editor. Principal photography of 'West is West' starts in October and the team plan to film in Manchester for one week and then move on to Pakistan for five weeks.
