Largely rejected upon its release back in 1987, the live-action film adaptation of Masters of the Universe (watch it Here) has gathered a cult following over the decades, and elements of the film have even been worked into the recent animated Netflix shows Masters of the Universe: Revelation and Masters of the Universe: Revolution. On April 17th, Umbrella Home Entertainment in Australia will be giving the film a collector’s edition Blu-ray release – and copies are available for pre-order Here! (Just make sure you have the ability to play Region B Blu-rays before ordering one.)

Warner Bros and DC Films have given the green light for development to begin on a new Supergirl movie.

The film was directed by Jeannot Szwarc and written by David Odell and focused on Kara of Argo City who poses as Clark Kent’s cousin, Linda Lee. Supergirl is flying to the big screen again.
Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment are in the early stages of a “Supergirl” film. They have hired Oren Uziel to write the script, but have not found a producer yet.
The character has been played by Melissa Benoist in the titular CW series that’s heading into its fourth season and is overseen by Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg, and Allison Adler.
The “Supergirl” character first appeared in “Action Comics #252” from writer Otto Binder and illustrator Al Plastino. It followed Kara Zor-El, who was born and raised in Argo City, a fragment of Krypton that survived destruction. When the city is doomed, Kara is sent to Earth by her parents to be raised by her cousin Kal-El, known as Superman. Supergirl adopted the secret identity of orphan Linda Lee and made Midvale Orphanage her home.

We’re told that the first live- action feature film super-heroine was the marvelous Helen Slater, whose fine presence redeems this last film in the Salkind Superman franchise. CineSavant likes it for the right reasons — his very young kids adored it — but can see its turnip screenwriting and frayed corners showing through. The release combines a 125-minute Blu-ray with an overstuffed 139-minute DVD.

We never got The Dark Crystal 2 on the big screen in the end - but the story is coming to comics...
When it was released back in December of 1982, Jim Henson and Frank Oz's The Dark Crystal was something of a curiousity. Faithful fans of The Muppets wondered why the pair spent their time building an elaborate fantasy world on screen when they could have been working on another project featuring Kermit and company, and the rest of the audience wasn't sure what to make of the odd vision that was unfolding on screen. (Plus, some parents were concerned that the movie would be too disturbing for their kids and stayed away). Although the movie made its budget back, it never quite had the initial critical or pop cultural impact that Henson and Oz were hoping for, and was at first largely viewed as a compelling disappointment.

After over thirty years, Jim Henson and Frank Oz's classic fantasy film The Dark Crystal is getting a sequel! It will be in the form of a comic book mini-series called The Power of the Dark Crystal. It's being published by Boom! Studios from an unproduced script that was written years ago.
The Jim Henson Company announced in 2005 that they would be developing The Power of the Dark Crystal as a feature film. At one point, Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack) was attached to the project, but nothing has ever happened with it. Apparently, it's been in very slow development. Maybe they hope that this comic will help spark some new interest in the project and give it the boost it needs to get the movie made.
The comic will be 12 issues long and the story is set decades after events of 1982's The Dark Crystal. It follows "Jen and...

It was weird. It was creepy. But It was a huge success…and it’s been wayyyy too long….
Are you ready for another adventure in the Dark Crystal series??? If you are, let’s just hope you can read (And since you’re reading this right now…we assume you do)!
If you were a fan of the 1984 Jim Henson/Frank Oz puppet classic revolving around the character Jen, the elf-like 'Gelfling' on a quest to restore balance to his alien world by returning a lost shard to a powerful but broken gem, you’ll be glad to hear that the sequel will appear in graphic novel form!
According to THR, after more than three decades, we will finally see the continuation of this fantasy adventure thanks to the peeps over at Boom! Studios.

When Masters of the Universe was pitched to financiers by infamously grandstanding Cannon Films execs Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, it was described as "the Star Wars of the '80s".
Though they seemed to have forgotten we already had two pretty good Star Wars films in the 1980s, you can't really blame Golan and Globus for trying – a decade into their run at Cannon, they needed a big hit to rescue the company from financial ruin. They put everything they had into Masters of the Universe and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, and when both flopped, it spelled the beginning of the end for Cannon Films.
Still, they sort of delivered on that Star Wars promise. With its laser guns and Earth-set plot, Masters of the Universe certainly bears little resemblance to the popular cartoon series it shares part of a title with (Filmation's iconic He-Man and the...

Remember Masters of the Universe?
It was the 1987 He-Man movie that never really felt like a He-Man movie. Most of the movie took place on Earth, instead of Eternia. He-Man, played by Dolph Lundgren, preferred to use blasters and rifles instead of his sword. Orko was nonexistent along with He-Man’s true identity of Prince Adam. And, Man-at-Arms and Teela were eating chicken.
Masters of the Universe was a live-action fail. Yet, I oddly still loved the movie as a kid. Why? Because it had the name He-Man attached to it. To be blunt, the movie “sucked,” but I didn’t care. The movie heralded new toys and made me think that one-day, perhaps a live-action GI Joe movie would be made (meaning a good one and not the super suit travesty we got shafted with in 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra). I had big dreams.

Once upon a time there existed a cinematic landscape where not every feature-length fairy tale movie was drawn from a classic story, and the descriptor “fractured fairy tale” didn’t just mean gross-out humor and a Scottish-accented Mike Myers playing a big green ogre. While some of those films have certainly succeeded (this writer has a soft spot for the first “Shrek”), the kind of tale that the likes of the Brothers Grimm would collect in their oeuvre of beloved folklore was often of the darker-hued variety – pitting characters in bleak struggles that would see them rise from the ashes as better individuals for it in the end. Yes, the stories were simple, but they also served as a basis for many of the storytelling tropes that are used today – and may have influenced a few of our own moral compasses, with the fables acting as parables for life's lessons.

Yes, we all know that a lot has changed with The Dark Crystal during the time, but still, it’s nice to hear that the project is moving forward.

Collider reports that The Jim Henson Company will head to Australia to shoot the sequel, Power of the Dark Crystal. The movie will be one of the biggest projects to be produced in the country. Stepping in for director Frank Oz will be Australian sibling directors Peter Spierig and Michael Spierig, whose most recent movie was the vampire flick Daybreakers. Another Australian, Craig Pearce (Moulin Rouge) wrote the screenplay based on an original script by Annette Duffy and David Odell.

If you're thirty-something like me, one film that keeps popping up from your childhood is Jim Henson's much beloved 1982 classic The Dark Crystal. For a kid's flick it was pretty dark and disturbing. We've heard rumors of a follow-up to Henson and Frank Oz's cult hit for years, and it seemed like it was going to come to fruition back in 2005-2006, but that earlier version fell through. The first time I reported on a sequel to Jim Henson's The Dark Crystal was in May of 2005. The first image from the film featuring Queen Kira (view here) arrived in February of 2006. Then, one year later, in February of 2007, amidst rumors the film had been abandoned, an official announcement was made saying Power of the Dark Crystal "has not been 'cancelled' or 'put on hiatus' or any of the other rumored status changes" at which time storyboards for the film were released, which you can browse here.
Now, over three years later, things continue to move as an official press release was sent out announcing Daybreakers directors, Peter and Michael Spierig, have come aboard to direct the screenplay written by Australian Craig Pearce (Moulin Rouge, Strictly Ballroom, Romeo + Juliet) based on an original script by Annette Duffy and David Odell.

It has been more than four years since it was announced animator Genndy Tartakovsky would be directing a sequel to classic 80s fantasy film The Dark Crystal and that fact alone should tell you something. The Tartakovsky version of this film is never, ever going to happen. If it was going to happen it would have already. But you know what is going to happen? A Spierig Brothers version. The Henson Company has just announced that the directors of Undead and Daywalkers have taken over the project, which will be shot with a mix of live action and puppetry. Read the complete announcement below!

Sydney -- The Jim Henson Company is to partner with Australian production outfit Omnilab Media to make "Power of the Dark Crystal," a sequel to Henson's 1982 fantasy hit "The Dark Crystal," the companies confirmed Wednesday.
"Daybreakers" helmers Peter and Michael Speirig will direct the film to be made in stereoscopic 3D with a mix of live action and Henson puppetry, and is being billed as one of the most ambitious projects ever to be made here.
"Power of the Dark Crystal" will be produced by the Australia-based production arm of Omnilab Media, Ambience Entertainment, while Omnilab-owned special effects house Illoura will work on the CGI elements of the film.
Set hundreds of years after the events of the first movie when the world has once again fallen into darkness, "Power of the Dark Crystal" follows the adventures of a mysterious girl made of fire who, together with a Gelfling outcast,...

Australian writer/directors (and twin brothers) Michael and Peter Spierig have an interesting career trajectory: from their zombie-laden Undead to last year's vampire flick Daybreakers to... a sequel to Jim Henson's Dark Crystal?
Yes. It's true. The Dark Crystal. The one with the Gelflings and other weird puppet creatures that proved that Jim Henson had indeed inhaled at some point in his life.
But what will the sequel be about? Will it still use puppets? Will it still be fun to watch stoned out of your gourd? Address your questions in the the press release below (all but that last question).

It's funny that a project which looked to be pretty dead ends up resurrected by a pair of brothers already familiar with the undead. Indie filmmakers Peter and Michael Spierig, who made their debut with the self financed indie Undead and broke into the mainstream with their underrated vampire epic Daybreakers earlier this year, are set to helm the long awaited sequel to The Dark Crystal. In a joint announcement by Omnilab Media's Christopher Mapp and The Jim Henson Company's Lisa Henson, Australian based Omnilab Media is teaming up with The Jim Henson Company to bring the fantasy sequel Power of the Dark Crystal. Another surprise it that the sequel will be shot and presented on the big screen in stereoscopic 3D.The Spierig's will direct a screenplay written by frequent Baz Luhrman collaborator Craig Pearce, based on a story by Annette Duffy and David Odell. Once again traditional...

Sorry, Samurai Jack fans - Genndy Tartakovsky is no longer attached to direct The Power of the Dark Crystal. Boo? Hiss? I know he was an incredibly popular choice, but for years all I was hearing was that his version of the film was going nowhere. But there's good news. According to a smoking hot press release from The Henson Company, the film is finally set to move ahead with newly appointed directors, Peter and Michael Spierig. If you've seen Undead or, even more so Daybreakers, I think you'll agree that this tie-up is a very good thing indeed. The full press release also includes details on who has written the script, who is doing the FX and much more. Here's some choice quotes: ...Screenplay written by Australian Craig Pearce (Moulin Rouge, Strictly Ballroom, Romeo + Juliet) based on an original script by Annette Duffy and David Odell. The legendary fantasy...

In another time, The Dark Crystal- a source of Balance and Truth in the Universe- was shattered, dividing the world into two factions: the wicked Skeksis and the peaceful Mystics.
