Who shall we say is calling? On a new rendition of Leonard Cohen’s nearly half-century–old folk-rock classic “Who by Fire,” it’s Skinny Pelembe and Beth Orton. The duo’s breathy performance adds a sense of desperation and urgency to the track, which appeared on Cohen’s 1974 LP, New Skin for the Old Ceremony. There’s also a chilly element of mystery to the staggered way Orton and Skinny Pelemebe, whose real name is Doya Beardmore, build it out into shouting at the end.

This behind-the-scenes look at a tribute album to the glam rock pioneer only finds its groove when Bolan himself lights up the screen
Does Marc Bolan – king of glitter, pioneer of crushed velvet pantaloons and early 70s hitmaker supreme – need any more praise? If you are the Who manager Bill Curbishley, who produced AngelHeaded Hipster: The Songs of Marc Bolan & T Rex along with director Ethan Silverman, the answer is most definitely yes. “I felt he deserved universal acclaim,” says Curbishley. “His life was cut short, as [were] a lot of people’s, but he didn’t achieve the acclaim and the fame that Jimi Hendrix did.” Well, the exact level of Bolan’s position on the fame meter may well be a source of dispute – particularly as far as the US goes, which admittedly Bolan never conquered to anything like the same extent as his chum in glitter, David Bowie...

Marc Bolan has been pretty well served with documentaries over the years, to the point that most fans have heard numerous anecdotes about his fabled life many times over. Ethan Silverman’s Angelheaded Hipster at least brings something new to the party by framing the story around the making of a tribute album (released a couple of years back), allowing the film to focus on Bolan’s songwriting rather than the more iconoclastic, flashy or tabloidy aspects of his life and, indeed, death.
The beats of the Bolan story, after all, are pretty well known: the working class Jewish kid dragged up in post-war London, who becomes a proto-mod at 13, spends the mid sixties, alongside David Bowie, doing everything possible to become a popstar, drifting into Tokienesque hippiedom in the psychedelic era before donning glitter on his cheeks and a feather bower to kickstart the age of glam rock in...

Cameron Crowe on Marc Bolan and T. Rex in Ethan Silverman’s Angelheaded Hipster: The Songs of Marc Bolan & T. Rex: “A little bit of Eddie Cochran and a little bit of like futurism and it felt so fresh …” Photo: Neal Preston
In my wide-ranging conversation with Ethan Silverman we discuss why he is indebted to Cameron Crowe, Hal Willner’s work on Kurt Weill, the gift from producer Bill Curbishley of Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott, Cole Porter, Danny Fields, Beth Orton, Joan Jett, David Bowie, Nick Cave, Snarky Puppy, and Ethan’s interest in Weill, Lotte Lenya, and Bauhaus projects. On-camera comments by Billy Idol, Bono, The Edge, Elton John, Nena, Ringo Starr, Gloria Jones, Rolan Bolan, Richard Barone, Tony Visconti, Bowie, and Crowe provide unique context on the cultural importance of Marc Bolan.

At the outset of Ethan Silverman’s documentary “Angelheaded Hipster: The Songs of Marc Bolan & T. Rex,” Billy Idol relays an anecdote about Marc Bolan — the magnetic songwriter and frontman of the English glam rock band T. Rex — getting booed by a crowd of 175,000 at a festival in 1971.
If you’ve heard of Bolan or even heard a single song by T. Rex (you have), it’s no surprise that the anecdote ends with Bolan melting the crowd’s faces with an hour of his churning, groovy guitars and sensually laconic singing, battering his guitar strings with a tambourine and receiving a 15-minute standing ovation in the process.
That’s just the kind of rock star Marc Bolan was, and his charisma is still so powerful, 45 years after his death at the age of 30, that it threatens to derail the focus of the documentary. That focus is ostensibly about the...

Kesha had just finished previewing her new album, Rainbow, for industry types at a Los Angeles recording studio three years ago when she encountered a stout, bearded guy with a “friendly, happy” vibe in the hallway. “You must be an artist,” he said, referring to her bright-red Nudie suit festooned with images of sea creatures.
She didn’t know who he was — and, it turned out, he didn’t recognize her either — but she soon learned he was a producer named Hal Willner, and he immediately recognized her name when she introduced herself.

Factory robots revolt against their programming and hit the dance floor in the Chemical Brothers’ vivid “Free Yourself” video. Directors Dom&Nic follow a security guard driving to his mundane job at AI staffing company Robo Force, where protestors line the streets with signs like “Jobs, Not Bots.” After he slips away to work, the AI creations slip out of their wooden crates and flail wildly to the electronic group’s pulsating dance cut. The rock songwriter released "Beck Hansen’s Song Reader" last year, as sheet music-only; however, he and special guests like Jarvis Cocker, Beth Orton, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Franz Ferdinand, Joan as Police Woman, Villagers' Conor J O'Brien, Michael Kiwanuka, the Staves, James Yorkston and more will play the 20 songs written for the collection. Ed Harcourt and David Coulter "will provide musical direction," with Beck's house band consisting of drummer Seb Rochford, bassist Tom Herbert and guitarist Dave Okumu....

Defiance, Season 1: Episode 4 – “The Devil in the Dark”
Directed by Omar Madha
Written by Michael Taylor
Airs Monday nights at 9 pm on SyFy
Last week, Defiance concluded its episode with a montage set to a cover of Nirvana’s “Come As You Are.” This week, a cover of “Ooh Child” (originally by The Five Stairsteps, covered by Beth Orton; some of you may be more familiar with the sampling in 2Pac’s “Keep Ya Head Up”) sends the episode off. As concluding pieces go, these songs draw attention to themselves in jarring ways not simply because these songs are relatively well known but because using a relatively well known song kind of forces a certain “reading” of the scene or episode as a whole. When Mad Men used The Beatles’ “Tomorrow Never Knows” in the episode “Lady Lazarus,” active viewing and thoughtful analysis in that montage became necessities. Defiance...

Son of Rogue's Gallery, a compilation of songs from the seafaring tradition, will feature a grizzled crew including Keith Richards, Michael Stipe, Nick Cave and Shane MacGowan
Iggy Pop, Patti Smith, Tom Waits and the Pogues' Shane MacGowan are among the contributors to a new compilation of pirate ballads. The grizzled, A-list crew was assembled by Johnny Depp, who performs on the album, and the people behind the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
First, some more names. Among the hearties who are shivering timbers on Son of Rogue's Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys: Tom Waits with Keith Richards, Michael Stipe with Courtney Love, Nick Cave, Broken Social Scene, Marianne Faithful with the McGarrigle sisters, Sissy Bounce with Akron/Family, Beth Orton, Macy Gray and Sean Lennon.
The two-disc set, due next year, is the sequel to a compilation from 2006. There too, Pirates producer Hal Willner manned the tiller.

As most of North America and the world watched, Hurricane Sandy put a huge dent into the day-to-day life for millions along the Eastern seaboard. While West Virginia was getting hammered with a severe snowstorm, New York City and the surrounding areas were nailed with high winds, heavy rains and high waves which caused devastating flooding and destruction. And some of the musicians in the area were directly affected by what transpired.
According to TMZ, New Kids on the Block member Donnie Wahlberg posted a 43-second video of his apartment was completely flooded. In the video Wahlberg and a friend can be seen sloshing through his apartment picking up items which are floating in the kitchen, including cereal bowls.
"So much for bacon. My entire building is under a foot of water," Wahlberg tweeted as the storm continued overnight. "Awesome neighbors all banding together to help each other! Stay safe!

Fans and friends are paying tribute to Terry Callier, one of Massive Attack's most celebrated collaborators.
The jazz and soul singer has died, aged 67, reportedly found dead at his home on Sunday, with saxophonist Gene Barge confirming his death to the Chicago Sun-Times.
Terry Callier was rediscovered later in his career through collaborations with Beth Orton and Massive Attack
Callier started his career aged 17 after signing a deal with Chess Records and recorded his debut track 'Look At Me Now', which was released in 1963.
He went on to put out a string of critically acclaimed albums, toured with George Benson and Gil Scott-Heron and also collaborated with Beth Orton and Massive Attack, who produced his 2009 album 'Hidden Conversations'...
Orton has taken to Twitter.com to pay tribute to Callier, sharing a video of herself performing with him in London in 1997.
This was one of the best nights of my life.

Rufus Wainwright, The National and They Might Be Giants are just three of the many high-profile acts set to take the stage next week in support of same-sex marriage nationwide.
On Oct. 30, the historic Beacon Theatre will host "Freedom To Love Now! A Concert For Marriage Equality," proceeds from which will benefit advocacy group Freedom To Marry. Also on hand to perform at the certain-to-be-historic concert: Beth Orton, Reggie Watts and indie pop trio fun., among others.
According to organizers, the show's ultimate goal is to remind voters of the forthcoming election's significance for the country's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (Lgbt) community, as well as to back President Obama's recent endorsement of same-sex marriage. Though Wainwright, who recently tied the knot with longtime partner Jorn Weisbrodt, was a natural choice for the show's lineup, co-founders Brice Rosenbloom, Simon Rentner and Thomas Bartlett (a.k.a. The music video for "Magpie," the first single off of Beth Orton's upcoming Sugaring Season (October 2), appears to have been filmed entirely through an Instagram filter. It fits in with the general aesthetic of directors Arni & Kinski, the duo behind Florence + the Machine's "No Light, No Light," Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars," and several Sigur Ros videos. Produced by Tucker Martine (who has worked with the Decemberists, Sufjan Stevens, and My Morning Jacket), Orton's album is her first since 2006's Comfort of Strangers.

The ten-track album was recorded in Portland, Oregon and was produced by Tucker Martine. Speaking about the album, Orton said: "I stretched myself as a singer on this record and used voices I never have before as a writer. Seems like the major labels will continue to mine the nostalgia angle with the hope that they can squeeze a few more ducats from aging music fans everywhere. Fine by me, if the music merits the "super-deluxe-never-before-heard-or-seen" treatment. And since I've been sucked into that black hole with the Dead, Stones, Rush, Hendrix, Jesus & Mary Chain, et al., I've missed some amazing music and culture this past year. No excuses now as I cram a full year's worth of culture down my gullet before Christmas. You can check out more of my favorite culture from 2011 in these Spring, Summer, and Fall articles.

I showed up two hours early to see British folk-rock singer Beth Orton's concert on the Hudson River last night. I had planned to have a picnic dinner with a friend before the show. This is the text I sent my friend when I got there: Beth Orton is on the stage right now doing a sound check! Unless that's a stand-in doing it for her. She doesn't sound very good. Five minutes later, I was standing right next to the stage and I sent this one: It's totally her and she sounds bad! Ok I'm going in search of food. I could only hope that Beth Orton wasn't giving it her all because it was a sound check. That she was saving her real voice for the real audience, who would roll in over the next couple hours and...
