Did you know that being in medicine is a good prerequisite for becoming a casting director? Well, you do now, because not only was that what “As We See It” casting director Cami Patton was initially studying, but her first boss was also once in the medical field. “Oddly, I was pre-med, but my sister was an actress and I followed her around on interviews and I always knew everybody that was there and she was like, ‘Oh, you should think about casting,’ and my first boss was a registered nurse, Eileen Knight,” Patton tells Gold Derby during our Meet the Experts: Casting Directors group panel (watch the exclusive group roundtable video above). “It was very interesting. We both really loved the study of medicine, but didn’t really wanna practice. And it just ended up being a natural fit.”

For Cami Patton, “As Wee See It” was the job of a lifetime. Based on the Israeli series “On the Spectrum” and adapted by Jason Katims, the Amazon Prime Video series follows three young adults — Jack (Rick Glassman), Vivian (Sue Ann Pien) and Harrison (Albert Rutecki) — who are on the autism spectrum navigating their lives. Katims, whose son is autistic, wanted to cast neurodiverse actors in the lead roles and Patton was the first person he called once the show was greenlit.
“We have a few things in common in our personal lives so he knew it was something that would be near and dear to me and the idea that he already gotten the studio to Ok us — really just focusing in the beginning on looking for neurodiverse talent was huge,” Patton tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: Casting Directors panel (watch the exclusive video interivew above...

Curated by the IndieWire Crafts team, Craft Considerations is a platform for filmmakers to talk about recent work we believe is worthy of awards consideration. In partnership with Amazon Prime Video, for this edition we look at how “As We See It” casting director Cami Patton found untapped talent pools of neurodiverse actors to breathe life into the show’s main cast.
A cast-contingent series — a TV pilot that will only be ordered to series if the lead casting is approved — requires that the show’s casting director not only find the right people to fill roles, but find people who inspire a sense that the show, as a whole, is going to work. On “As We See It”, Jason Katims’ observational comedy about a group of young adults on the autism spectrum living together, this meant casting neurodiverse actors who could inspire that series-wide confidence. Patton Oswalt is ubiquitous.
The comedian / actor / writer / producer has a list of credits longer than Reed Richards’ arm, and if I mention just some of the shows he’s been in (or voiced) that I enjoyed, you’ll understand why I think he’s tapped into my cable feed. But, in the interest of full disclosure, this personal list includes Justified, Agents of Shield, Community, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Futurama, Burn Notice, Veep, Archer, and Static Shock. He’s co-starring in the newly revived Mystery Science Theater 3000 playing the latest newest member of the Forrester family. And he steals the spotlight in Foil, one of Weird Al Yankovic’s best videos.
If somebody semi-knowledgeable told me Oswalt is one of the guys in the Daleks cans, I’d probably believe ‘em.

In my early days on the beat, NBC had an ad campaign encouraging people to watch summer reruns, promising, "If you haven't seen it, it's new to you!" In the age of Peak TV, that slogan seems less cynical than accurate. The rise of streaming services has put the bulk of TV history only a click or two away, which means that people are constantly discovering The Wire, or Arrested Development, or Terriers (sigh) for the very first time. In lieu of a summer rewind this year, I wanted to offer up primers of shows you can stream, whether an older series available in full(*) or something current you can catch up on before its next season begins. So far, I've done a pair of current shows in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Halt and Catch Fire, and wanted to shift gears this week to do a completed series. (*) Note: with these picks,...

Want to revisit "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" before "Terminator: Genisys" opens? Better do it before July 1, when Netflix says "Hasta la vista" to the 1991 sequel.
If you have a hankering to watch "Four Weddings and a Funeral," "Moonstruck," "Cast Away," or "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," get on it, because those are also disappearing in July.
And start marathoning these TV classics before they go poof: "Leave it to Beaver," "Dragnet," "Mission: Impossible," "Hawaii Five-o," "Magnum P.I.," "Miami Vice," "Knight Rider," "Melrose Place" and "Wings." Also bid goodbye to the Stephen King miniseries "The Stand" (1994) and "The Langoliers" (1995).
Below is a complete list of the movies that Netflix is pulling from your streaming list. And, just so you're not left empty-handed, here's a list of what's new on Netflix in July 2015. (All titles and dates provided by Netflix and subject to change.)

Gene Patton, the NBC stagehand in Burbank who stole the spotlight as Gene Gene the Dancing Machine on NBC’s wacky The Gong Show, died Monday, his family announced. He was 82. Patton died in Pasadena, according to a spokeswoman at the local Woods-Valentine Mortuary. He had suffered from diabetes. The Gong Show, dreamed up and hosted by producer Chuck Barris (The Dating Game, The Newlywed Game), aired on NBC in daytime from 1976-78 and then in syndication. Acts — most of them amateurish and just plain awful — auditioned for three celebrity judges, who banged a gong on

Peter Bart and Mike Fleming Jr. worked together for two decades at Daily Variety. In this weekly column, two old friends get together and grind their axes, mostly on the movie business.
Bart: The demonstrations in Paris in response to the Charlie Hebdo assassinations have been stirring, but now come the inevitable debates about “correctness” and “sensitivities.” Salman Rushdie refers to emergence of the “but brigade” – those leaders who advocate free expression, but…
There’s no room for a “but” – and all the constraints that entails. Were the French cartoonists wrong in creating their cartoons? No, I applaud them. That’s what political satire is all about. Were Seth Rogen and James Franco wrong in depicting a specific North Korean dictator? No, their film was, once again, political satire — albeit a clumsy one — and specificity added to its relevance. At many American universities these days, scores of political speakers are...

With the dog days of summer finally upon us, it's good to find an excuse (any excuse) to dip out of the heat and into a coolly air-conditioned living room. And what better way to spend your time than by watching things on Netflix? Behold, a list of things that are new to Netflix in July.
There are a bunch of new Christmas movies on the streaming service, part of the company's "Christmas in July" program (things like "Bad Santa" and "The Nightmare Before Christmas"), as well as a handful of Disney classics (like "Tarzan" and "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids"). There are also, as always, newer films that you might have missed, but don't have to anymore -- everything from Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" (starring the late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman) to this year's "Wolf Creek 2," a high-octane Australian thriller that seriously doesn't disappoint.

I Declare War focuses in on a group of 12-year-olds who are playing ‘Capture the Flag’ in the local woods, as their imaginations – and insecurities – get the better of them. This Canadian indie production is a charming, but also disquieting film that sees a child’s game develop into a dark test of loyalty and limits.
Writer and director Jason Lapeyre admits to being an army brat and that’s clearly reflected in the Patton-obsessed, win-at-all-costs Pk (Gage Monroe), whose intelligence and fervour twists the motives of all concerned in the so-called game. Working with what seems to be a minuscule budget and young actors of varying experience, I Declare War exceeds expectations and is an infectious and irrepressible adventure.
It’s made with a real appreciation of war movie tropes (surprise attacks, double crosses, gritty dialogue about ‘the first real enemy I’ve ever faced’) and makes fine use of a lively score.

Fresh off all that media buzz about how HBO’s cult comedy The Comeback should get a comeback (sorry, I had to go there eventually), HBO is considering reviving it as a limited series. I’m excited and wary, The Comeback was an amazing, ahead-of-its-time series. It’s pretty dangerous trying to recapture that kind of magic, especially when one of the minds behind it now works on the aggressively regressive 2 Broke Girls.
It’s disappointing news but we were warned it was probably coming. USA has ordered a final, six-episode season of White Collar. Is it just me or have we been talking about a lot of USA dramas heading to their series finales, lately?
I’m going to miss these guys saving each other.
Marvel announced that Patton Oswalt will be appearing on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as Agent Eric Koenig, one of the Howling Commandos.

As Backstage was going to press with our annual Pilot Season Guide, Fox’s entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly was telling television critics and reporters that he considers pilot season dead at Fox; the network plans to switch to the year-round development model—something Sean J. Miller reports on this week, speaking to Fox’s VP of casting Seth Yanklewitz and casting director Sharon Bialy, who think the end of pilot season could be great news for actors, and CD Judy Henderson (“Homeland”), who thinks it could mean trouble. But though the frantic pace and stress of the traditional network casting loom large in actors’ minds, CD Cami Patton and actors Necar Zadegan and Tara Summers had nothing but pleasure working on the casting of Fox’s “Rake.” (Maybe it’s just a Fox thing?) That being said, Michael Mosley—who’s survived a couple of pilot seasons himself, even being...

The British influx of television programs into the American mainstream has reached a pinnacle of popularity that cannot and should not be ignored. It seems as though network television has plunged into an abyss that prevents them from focusing on creative and innovative concepts and instead ensures that they constantly recycle nearly identical programs. With the bombardment of formulaic legal, criminal, and medical shows on the American networks, viewers are increasingly drawn to the offerings from across the pond.
Unlike the typical and sometimes mediocre fare of the American networks, British shows offer addictive binge-watching worthy stories that introduce fascinating characters and unique perspectives, regardless of the setting or the era. In contrast to American programs on network television such as NCIS, CSI, and the multitude of reality shows, the BBC America and PBS offer a dynamic range of “British” shows such as Downton Abbey, Sherlock, and Orphan Black, which...

The announcement was made by producers Beau St. Clair of Irish Dreamtime and Sriram Das of Das Films. There's nothing to really do when waiting for a train in a subway station. There isn't any cell phone service, and even if you're with friends, the odds that they are ten-minutes-of-straight-conversation-level interesting are sadly low. You might say that being on a subway platform makes for our only real, actual chance to take a break from staring at glowing rectangles all day and "Disconnect." So you people-watch, and sometimes, you notice the ads on the wall — some of which don't even have impromptu sharpie penises drawn on them.
For the last six months, almost every New York City subway station has been graced with an ad for Remy Martin champagne that features actress Paula Patton and her husband, k.d. lang hilarious comedic actor Alan Thicke's significantly less talented child singer Robin Thicke. They are on the roof of the U.S. Bank Tower in downtown Los Angeles and drinking Remy Martin champagne,...

At first blush, “Hannibal” looks like the conceptual twin of CBS timeslot rival “Elementary,” a series that seeks to leverage a brilliant literary character to sell a moody procedural. It’s also a little like “It Takes a Thief,” only here substituting a serial killer. Stick with the series through a handful of episodes, though, and it’s clear that showrunner Bryan Fuller has brought a semi-hypnotic quality to this prequel adaptation of Thomas Harris’ Hannibal Lecter character — ungainly and messy, but at times visually arresting, and thanks in large part to the central trio of Mads Mikkelsen, Hugh Dancy and Laurence Fishburne, quite interesting. Bon appetit.

A lot of things came out in the open during "The Hatchet Tour," but only in a way that could happen in Harlan. Here's a rundown of the key takeaways from this evening's Justified:
Drew Thompson Revealed: The biggest reveal of the night was that Sheriff Shelby Parlow is really Drew Thompson. Many of us suspected it during last week's Round Table, so I wasn't really surprised when Shelby sat down with Hunter in the car.
What did surprise me is the loyalty that Shelby/Drew inspired in so many people. Arlo went to his grave having killed someone to protect him. Hunter killed Arlo and tried to kill himself to protect him.
Hell, even his ex-wife seem to avoid picking him out of all the men in Harlan when she was asked too. Few men command that type of loyalty and respect. Kudos to you Shelby/Drew, I will miss ya.

Taciturn hero of film and television westerns
In Hollywood, in the days when men were men, Dale Robertson, who has died aged 89, was considered the epitome of masculinity. In the Clarion Call episode from O Henry's Full House (1952), a giggling, snivelling crook, played by Richard Widmark, whom Robertson, a cop, has come to arrest, keeps calling him "the beeg man". Robertson, an ex-prize fighter, was indeed "beeg" – tall, well-built and ruggedly handsome, with a gravelly voice. He was tough but fair to men, and courteous to ladies, particularly in the many westerns in which he starred in the 1950s, and in his most famous role, that of special investigator Jim Hardie in the TV series Tales of Wells Fargo.
He was born Dayle Lymoine Robertson, in Harrah, Oklahoma, and attended Oklahoma Military Academy, Claremore, where he was named "all around outstanding athlete". During the second world war, he served with Patton's Third Army,...

Patton Oswalt will guest-star on an upcoming episode of Parks and Recreation. The actor/comedian will try to make history — or rather, save it — in his role as Garth Blundin, adversary of Leslie Knope. In the installment, Leslie (Amy Poehler) takes issue with the town charter, which was written in the early 1800s and contains some dubious outdated laws. Convinced that it “needs some sprucing up, she introduces a bill in the City Council to alter the town charter in certain ways,” series executive producer Michael Schur explains to EW. “Patton plays a guy who is a strict constructionist.

The major television networks are scrambling to cast dozens of new pilots for next season, which means new opportunities for actors. ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, and the CW are each taking different approaches to their array of drama and comedy projects, so Backstage takes a look at all of the latest developments of this pilot season. Nbcnbc has ordered 11 comedy pilots so far this season, including “About a Boy,” based on the book by Nick Hornby that was adapted into a 2002 film starring Hugh Grant, which will be cast by Cami Patton; “Joe, Joe & Jane,” being cast by Jeff Greenberg, about a children's book author who must deal with his needy wife and his best friend/co-author; and “Assistance,” about a female assistant who must deal with her demanding boss with the help of her “work husband” and her fiancé, to be cast by Geraldine Leder. As pilot season begins to ramp up, four new comedy projects now have casting directors attached, Backstage has learned. The comedy "About a Boy" for NBC, which has ordered 11 comedy pilots this season, will be cast by North Hollywood-based Cami Patton. The pilot, based on the book by Nick Hornby which was also turned into a movie starring Hugh Grant, is about a serial bachelor who develops a relationship with the geeky boy who moves in next door. A shoot date and location is still being determined. NBC's "Joe, Joe & Jane," which has "Army Wives'" Sally Pressman lined up for one of the title characters, will be cast by Jeff Greenberg. The comedy pilot, which is based loosely on the relationship between executive producers Joe Port and Joe Wiseman and his wife, is about a children's book author who must deal with his needy wife and his best friend/co-author.

Justified is back!
And along with the white hat, dry humor and overall bad assery of Raylan Givens, that means our Justified Round Table team of Dan Forcella, Jim Garner, Carla Day and Nick McHatton is back as well.
Pull up a virtual chair and gather around below to read their take on "Hole in the Wall."
-------------------------------------------
What was your favorite scene from the opener?
Dan: Probably Raylan's first encounter with Jody. Throwing the bag of burgers in his face was classic Givens, and it just reminded me how awesome the next 12 weeks are going to be.
Jim: I have to agree with Dan, watching Raylan shoot the airbag of a car as a distraction method to prevent being shot and disarm Jody was classic!
Carla: When Colton shot the guy in the head after Boyd said, "Take care of him." In particular, I loved Boyd's shocked reaction. He isn't often taken by surprise.

Interview Sarah Dobbs Jan 8, 2013
Sarah (and twenty strangers) chat to Justified's Timothy Olyphant about season four, starting tonight in the Us on FX...
When it comes to doing interviews, I admit: I’m selfish. I’d much rather have ten minutes with my interviewee, all by myself, than share any length of time with a dozen other people. But sometimes roundtable interviews are all you’re offered, and when it’s someone as cool as Timothy Olyphant, well, you take what you can get.
Olyphant’s career has been a long and varied one; he’s played a detective, an alien, a drug dealer, a cyber-terrorist, a deranged serial killer, a computer game character, and dozens of other roles besides. Where he really seems to shine, though, is in law enforcement: his turn as the perpetually angry sheriff Seth Bullock in Deadwood was fantastic, and his presence also vastly...

In an attempt to avoid the crush of next year’s pilot season, four pilots in the early stages of production now have casting directors attached. These high-profile pilots are all likely to get the green light from network executives, but the decision to bring on casting personnel before they’ve been formally greenlit is just further evidence that pilot season is creeping back a couple months from its traditional mid-January kickoff. "There is no traditional pilot season anymore," said Cathy Reinking, a former manager of casting at NBC who oversaw the pilot casting on "The Office" and "Medium" among others. "The cable networks are doing pilots all-year round now so there's no traditional pilot season from January through March." Backstage has learned that the CBS pilot “Hostages,” producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s show about a family wrapped up in a political conspiracy, has Ronna Kress attached as a casting director.

Here’s the best of what will air as we celebrate everyone’s favorite military-themed federal holiday. (Better luck next year, Veterans Day!) Whether you’re looking for classic flicks, absurdist comedy, garbage reality shows, or slightly less trashy reality shows, that miraculous box will have you covered. USA! USA!

Chicago – Patton Oswalt is one of the funniest stand-up comedians alive. You may not know the name but you almost certainly know who he is. He’s had such a diverse career, including scene-stealing work on TV (“King of Queens”), the lead role in a beloved Pixar film (“Ratatouille”), great indie flicks (“Big Fan”), cable series (“The United States of Tara”), and even a Cfca-nominated performance in last year’s “Young Adult.” As Great as all of that is, Patton Oswalt’s greatest gift (outside of perhaps being one of the people for whom Twitter was invented) may be on a stand-up comedy stage. Watch the Grammy-nominated “Patton Oswalt: Finest Hour,” recently released on DVD, and tell me I’m wrong.
DVD Rating: 4.5/5.0
I’m a big fan of stand-up but the fact is that we can’t review most of the ones that come into the HollywoodChicago.com office.
