Elevated genre has just been turbo charged by a new strategic alliance between Globalgate Entertainment and Morbido Group, the fast expanding horror conglomerate in Ibero-America.
Co-founded in 2016 by former Pantelion Films CEO Paul Presburger, Globalgate Entertainment is a local-language film & TV production and co-financing consortium formed by Lionsgate and 14 other prominent international entertainment companies, including key players in major markets.
The strategic partnership, dubbed MorbidoGate, aims to develop elevated genre content by generating and acquiring IP while fostering emerging talent in key markets worldwide.
The strategic alliance is supported by Palo Alto-based Maum Capital Group, founded by tech entrepreneur-investor Brian Koo, that will help develop specific projects that can use their tech advances in depicting hyper-realistic digital humans and creatures.
Said Presburger: “We have enviably observed Morbido’s leading position in the genre throughout Latin America and look forward to offering up their fright and expanding the genre business with Globalgate’s partners.

Exclusive: When Netflix chief Reed Hastings recorded an audio essay for the BBC last month, one comment stood out within his message of solidarity for an industry besieged by virus disruption: “Throughout the pandemic, we’ve seen our members watching more content from other countries or cultures.”

Hastings name-checked Spanish show Money Heist, Italian drama Summertime, and the German-American show Unorthodox as three series that have broken across national boundaries to be watched by a varied viewership.

Newly launched Lionsgate India is to remake two high-concept international properties in collaboration with Azure Entertainment and Lionsgate affiliate Globalgate. The two remakes — the first titles under the new partnership — are of hit Mexican comedy “Instructions Not Included” and South Korean action thriller “The Terror Live.”
“Instructions Not Included” (2013) was produced by Lionsgate’s Pantelion Films and became the highest-grossing Spanish-language film in North America. “Instructions” has already been remade in France by Vendome/Mars Films as “Demain Tout Commence,” and is being developed in other territories.
Azure and Globalgate will also produce an Indian version of “The Terror Live,” which was a $36 million hit for Lotte Entertainment in 2013 and is under discussion for multiple other remake deals. Azure and Lionsgate India are currently finalizing the writers and directors for the two projects.
Headed by former Reliance MediaWorks executive Sunir Kheterpal, Azure is backed by The Three Sisters: Institutional Office.

China’s Wanda Studios in Qingdao officially opened on Saturday (April 28) with a low-key ceremony. That was paired with the announcement of ambitious Chinese projects, but a frustrating lack of inbound Hollywood movies.
With the Wanda parent company still in the Chinese government’s sin bin, the stunning new studio may be a tangible indicator that points more to business than showbiz glamour.
There was no red carpet or or global superstars at the grand theater, where the one-hour ceremony took place. The Wanda Group has been under tight government scrutiny in recent years, particularly over its high profile foreign investments including acquisitions of Legendary Entertainment and AMC Theatres. It has been shedding assets and suffered a high turnover of top executives as the conglomerate’s financial and political woes deepened.
That was a stark contrast to the initial launch of the studios’ construction launch in 2013, when Leonardo DiCaprio, John Travolta...

Actor/director Peter Bogdanovich is being sued by a man who claims the filmmaker demanded he be paid for employing his son. Iaroslav Jikov filed a lawsuit in New York's District Court last Tuesday, claiming The Last Picture Show director and his business manager William Peiffer agreed to hire his son Matt Jikov on the condition they receive $100,000. Iaroslav says he met Bogdanovich and Peiffer twice in 2005 to discuss the opportunity to break his son in the film industry, and paid them the money on February 7, 2005. Iaroslav said he demanded the money back in January 2006, but the pair refused.
