Director Lesli Linka Glatter was elected President of the Directors Guild of America at the union’s National Biennial Convention in Los Angeles on Saturday night.
Glatter replaced Thomas Schlamme, who was guild president for the last four years.
Glatter has been on the Guild’s National Board since 2003, most recently as First Vice-President, and before that as Fifth Vice-President. She’s been a member of three negotiating committees including the most recent, which brought in new residuals for directors in paid video on demand and other areas.
Additionally, 160 delegates representing more than 18,000 members of the DGA elected a new slate of officers and members of the National Board of Directors, which included Ron Howard, Barry Jenkins, Ava DuVernay, Paris Barclay and others.
“I am honored to have been chosen by my peers to serve as President, and am committed to continuing our Guild’s great legacy of protecting the...

The members of the Directors Guild of America overwhelmingly approved the new collective bargaining agreement between the DGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), president Thomas Schlamme announced Friday.
The three-year deal takes effect beginning on July 1, 2020 and will run through June 30, 2023. Negotiations between the DGA and the AMPTP concluded March 4.
“I am proud to report that our membership overwhelmingly voted to ratify the new contract. In a time of enormous uncertainty as we’re all feeling the weight of this current pandemic, it is at least reassuring for our members to know that when the industry resumes production, a strong new agreement awaits them,” Schlamme said in a statement. “The agreement contains important gains in key areas, including dramatic improvements in Svod residuals and coverage; a significant increase in funding for our Pension Plan to secure our retirement promises now and into the future; healthy...

Thomas Schlamme was re-elected president of the Directors Guild of America by acclamation today by the delegates to the guild’s biennial convention. The Emmy-winning West Wing director was first elected in 2017.
“It is my honor to once again accept the position of President of the Directors Guild of America,” he said. “It’s a privilege I don’t take lightly. We’re in a time of immense change, and the next few years will be critical for the DGA and for our industry. I am focused and ready to lead us through our next negotiations, and to ensure that the creative and economic rights of directors and their teams are protected for years to come. And I am fortunate that serving alongside me is a dedicated, experienced team of fellow officers elected to represent our members.”

The DGA is already gearing up for next year’s film and TV contract negotiations. “This is the most important thing we do as a guild,” DGA president Thomas Schlamme said at the guild’s recent annual membership meeting. “It’s where we exert our collective bargaining strength and leverage on this business. While our major contracts expire on June 30, 2020, just over a year from now, we’ve been ramping up our preparations.”
“Right now, it’s far too early in the process to make definitive statements about our negotiating priorities,” Schlamme said at the meeting. “But rest assured, we will be as forceful as we always are in ensuring that compensation, working conditions, residuals, pension and health, creative rights and inclusion are addressed.”
Directors Jon Avnet and Todd Holland will co-chair the guild’s negotiating committee, which will be made up of nearly 80 members from all the guild’s various job categories.

So maybe Joan of Arc plays second fiddle to few saints in history, but on stage even she’s no match for Glenn Close. As the title character in Mother of the Maid, Jane Anderson’s eccentric and startlingly play opening tonight Off Broadway at the Public Theater, Close takes on history and wins.
Mother of the Maid reunites the actress, as good here as you’ve seen her, with Anderson (the two most recently collaborated on feature film The Wife) and Damages director Matthew Penn. The three play off one another to great effect – Close’s regal demeanor an ironic counterpoint to Penn’s stark staging and Anderson’s near-comic workaday dialogue.
How workaday? “What do I need fuggin’ nuns for?” asks, at one point, Joan of Arc – Joanie to her family. Played (and played very well) by Grace Van Patten (The Meyerowitz Stories), this young saint in the making has the swagger,...
