The Outlaws is almost back for Season 3 and a lot has changed for one of the show’s key players as star Jessica Gunning receives ongoing acclaim for her role in Baby Reindeer. Gunning is still great in her role as Diane, a Community Payback Officer who keeps the titular low-brow criminals in line, or so she thinks. As the group, including Greg (Stephen Merchant), Rani (Rhianne Barreto), Ben (Gamba Cole), John (Darren Boyd), Myrna (Clare Perkins), and Lady Gabby (Eleanor Tomlinson), gets into more trouble with drug kingpin The Dean (Claes Bang), Diane may or may not find herself swept up in crime chaos. While fans await Season 3’s arrival, Gunning teases what’s to come for Diane and more about her breakout role as Martha in Baby Reindeer. Alistair Heap What is new for Diane in The Outlaws Season 3? Stephen Merchant has revealed he has no plans for further episodes of The Outlaws after the incoming series three: more details here.
Stephen Merchant took the British comedy scene by storm in 2001 when he wrote and directed The Office with Ricky Gervais. He went on to forge a successful solo career, from stand up tour Hello Ladies and the American sitcom of the same name to his successful pivot into hour long crime comedy with The Outlaws, which returns for its third series next week.
Created by Merchant and Elgin James, the show follows a disparate group of people assigned to community service for various reasons which gradually reveal themselves.

Thomas Hardiman's Medusa Deluxe is now showing exclusively on Mubi in many countries—including the United Kingdom, India, Turkey, Brazil, and Mexico—from August 4, 2023, in the series Debuts.Medusa Deluxe. In the midst of navigating the drama that ensnares all of Medusa Deluxe’s characters, Claire Perkins’s Cleve looks at a fellow hairdresser and explains, “There is some serious history in this hairstyle, do you know that? A story.” The hairstyle in question is initially shown as an unfinished work of art (or travesty if you’re a competitor hoping for a fellow stylist’s downfall): a mess of strands that’s easy to see through and hard to make sense of. But as the film progresses, Cleve creates a truly beautiful and engrossing design out of what was once incoherent webbing: a glowing ship upon a wave of hair, meant to be a recreation of the Orient,...

Fall festival season is around the corner, so now is a great time to catch up on a Cannes title that was one of summer’s defining indie hits. It involves a beloved (but polarizing) director who regularly attracts Oscar attention.
The contender to watch this week: “Asteroid City”
Wes Anderson‘s latest has been available on VOD since mid-July, but now it’s also streaming on Peacock, which shares a parent company with distributor Focus Features. Anderson is a three-time Best Original Screenplay nominee, and this existential alien-invasion dramedy starring Jason Schwartzman and Scarlett Johansson could net the writer-director his fourth nod in that category. (He’d share the recognition with co-writer Roman Coppola.) “Asteroid City” is one of two Anderson films bowing in 2023, the other being a forthcoming Netflix adaptation of Roald Dahl’s “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.”

In the world of Medusa Deluxe, beauticians wield scissors like knives and hairsprays like pistols. Hairstyling competitions are fraught spaces stacked with talented participants. Anyone can tame an unruly mane, but only a handful can turn it into a work of art.
“I’m in the middle of a Georgian fontange,” one stylist snaps in the opening scene of Thomas Hardiman’s exciting directorial debut. “You can’t just walk away from that shit.” Tensions are high in this dressing room. Outside the door, police patrol the hall. Sirens blare in the distance. The death of Mosca (John Alan Roberts), one of the stylists, has paused the competition and forced a temporary lockdown.
The atmosphere is thick with suspicion. This is a cutthroat bunch, a community whose members convene annually to flaunt their skills and prove themselves. There are public alliances and private allegiances. Betrayals abound, too. Everyone has a theory.

There’s been a scalping at a Northern England hairdressing competition.
It’s all any of the hairdressers — “hair artists” might be a better description, given the towering Marie Antoinette-level coifs and rainbow-colored cascades and expertly sculpted geometric ‘dos they’ve designed — can talk about. The victim is Mosca, the presumed frontrunner before being found dead and mutilated. No one’s canceled the event, however, and his peers are prepping their models for the runway. The show must go on.
As for the suspects — well, where do we start?...

Few, if any, single-shot movies ever justify the conceit. In fact, most of them do their material a disservice through the distraction that emerges naturally from the trickery. In other words, audiences are often put into the position of looking for the seams in the filmmaking, on the hunt for evidence of the artifice. In the case of writer-director Thomas Hardiman’s Medusa Deluxe, though, artifice is the entire raison d’être.
Set within the backstages of a cutthroat hairdressing competition, the film opens with a riled-up Cleve (played with dazzling fire by Clare Perkins) recounting the story’s inciting incident while fussing over a disgruntled model’s coif. Stylist Mosca (John Alan Roberts), presumed to be heavy competition, has not only been discovered dead, but also scalped. The remaining contestants are now sheltering in place and turbo-gossiping about who his presumed murderer could possibly be. At the same time,...

This premiered at a handful of film festival last year, including Locarno, Beyond Fest, Fantastic Fest, Fantasy Filmfest, and the London Film Festival. Starring Anita-Joy Uwajeh, Clare Perkins, Darrell D'Silva, Debris Stevenson, Harriet Webb, Heider Ali, Kae Alexander, Kayla Meikle, Lilit Lesser, Luke Pasqualino. "Medusa Deluxe is a unique and audacious trip quite unlike anything you’ll experience." It looks like crazy fun, though the boxy aspect ratio doesn't fit. // Continue Reading ›...

Stephen Merchant’s The Outlaws will return for a third season on Prime Video and BBC One. Filming on the new season of the critically acclaimed comedy is currently underway in and around Bristol.
“After the overwhelming response to the first two series, I’m delighted to be bringing back our lovable band of miscreants for more misadventures. Audiences have really taken the characters to their hearts, so I can’t wait for them to see what hot water we’ve thrown them into this time. And I’m thrilled we’ll once again be filming in my hometown of Bristol. I expect I’ll be welcomed with a ticker-tape parade. It didn’t happen on the previous series, but I put that down to Covid,” said Stephen Merchant.

Elaborate braids, teased curls, and brightly colored dye all mix together at the hands of talented hairstylists prepping their models for an annual hair competition. Similar to the beautiful intricacies of hair styling, writer/director Thomas Hardiman weaves through an intriguing murder mystery with the audience at his mercy. An arresting and visually stunning achievement, “Medusa Deluxe” breaks the framework on storytelling and sheds the skin of a subculture in the process.
Confident and accomplished Cleve (powerfully played by Clare Perkins) is attempting to style the baroque Georgian Fontange on her model as she speculates about the horrific events of the evening with her religious rival Divine (Kayla Meikle). In “Medusa Deluxe,” the serpents aren’t in the hair, but all around it: a writhing, hissing collective of human predators slinking around the various parlors and platforms of a high-level hairdressing competition. Most are venomous, and at least one is deadly, or so it seems when a star stylist is found, not just murdered but quite literally scalped, the night before his widely expected victory in the contest. That’s the setup for British writer-director Thomas Hardiman’s splashy, hooky debut feature “Medusa Deluxe,” an arch, gossip-fueled murder mystery that delights more in rounding up its many unusual suspects than in any kind of logical, procedural detective work: Whodunnit isn’t a pressing question in a film where everyone is 100 that bitch.

"We could use this money to do something real!" Amazon has revealed a new official US trailer for a British comedy series titled The Outlaws, finally arriving for streaming in the US on Prime Video this April. The first season already debuted in the UK on BBC last fall. Seven strangers from different walks of life forced together to finish a community payback sentence in Bristol. They're sent to clean up a derelict community center, until one day they discover a hidden bag of drug money. Will they all be able to agree on what to do with it? The Outlaws main cast features Stephen Merchant, Rhianne Barreto, Darren Boyd, Gamba Cole, Clare Perkins, Eleanor Tomlinson, Charles Babalola, Isla Gie, with Christopher Walken. This looks kooky and amusing, though I'm not sure it has the right stuff to become a modern classic. They're already prepping Season 2 in the UK while...

Christopher Walken deliberately painted over a Banksy graffiti piece in the final episode of The Outlaws, a spokesperson for the BBC/Amazon show has confirmed.
