- He grew up in Wooster, Ohio. As a student at what is now Case Western Reserve University, he studied political science and religion and worked for the college radio station. After graduating, he joined an ABC-TV affiliate in Cleveland. He moved to NBC in 1961, where he became a writer for David Brinkley, the Washington-based anchor of the network's evening news show, "The Huntley-Brinkley Report".
