Wonya Lucas has been named president and CEO of Crown Media Family Networks.
In her new role, Lucas will be responsible for the strategic direction, daily management and growth of the three linear networks—the Hallmark Channel, Hallmark Movies & Mysteries and Hallmark Drama—as well as the company’s digital platforms and subscription streaming service, Hallmark Movies Now.
Lucas takes over the role previously held by Bill Abbott, who stepped down in January following Hallmark Channel’s controversial handling of a same-sex ad. Lucas will report to Mike Perry, CEO of parent company Hallmark Cards, Inc.
“Wonya is a brand builder at her core who shares Hallmark’s beliefs and values. She has a deep understanding of the role our brand plays in fulfilling a bigger purpose in people’s lives,” Perry said. “After a thorough search process, we found a remarkable leader with proven general management skills, as...

Crown Media Family Networks have named a new President and CEO.
Wonya Lucas previously worked as CEO for TV One and will report directly to Hallmark Cards CEO, Mike Perry.
Former CEO, Bill Abbott, left under a dark cloud in January after he came under fire for the decision to remove a commercial featuring a same-sex couple.
While Abbott later apologized for the decision, the family of networks came under fire for their lack of diversity, and as Abbott was at the helm, he paid the price.
Lucas will focus on growing the iconic television brand, whose flagship Hallmark Channel is routinely ranked among the top cable networks.

Bill Abbott is exiting his post as president and CEO of Crown Media, the parent company of Hallmark Channel, Hallmark Movies & Mysteries and Hallmark Drama. The company made the announcement on Wednesday.
“After 11 years, Bill Abbott, president and CEO of Crown Media is leaving the company,” said Mike Perry, president and CEO of Hallmark Cards, Inc. “I want to thank Bill for his many years of success and contributions to Crown Media and wish him continued success.”
“I have tremendous confidence in the Crown Media management team and with this team in place, I will begin a search for Bill’s replacement,” Perry continued.
News of Abbott’s departure comes a little over a month after Hallmark found itself in hot water over a Zola ad featuring a same-sex couple. It showed two women getting married pondering how their wedding might have improved with the use of Zola’s services.

The Hallmark Channel has apologized and reinstated four previously-pulled commercials from the wedding planning website Zola that featured two brides kissing after facing a wave of criticism, The New York Times reports
Hallmark axed the ads last Thursday after the conservative group One Million Moms, which is part of the anti-lgbtq organization American Family Association, published a petition online against them that garnered nearly 25,000 signatures. At the time, Hallmark said that they did not allow ads “that are deemed controversial” and that the women showing “public displays of affection” violated that rule.

The owner of TV’s Hallmark Channel on Sunday reversed a decision to ban a commercial depicting a same-sex wedding, suggesting that it was not in keeping with the company’s well-known slogan, “When you care enough to send the very best.”
Earlier this week, Hallmark Channel decided to reject an ad from online-weddings firm Zola which showed two women getting married pondering how their wedding might have improved with the use of Zola’s services. The company cited a desire to avoid controversy, and a conservative advocacy organization, One Million Moms, had already started a petition urging the cable outlet to remove the ad from its schedule.
“The Hallmark Channel will be reaching out to Zola to reestablish our partnership and reinstate the commercials,” said Mike Perry, president and CEO of Hallmark Cards, which controls Crown Media Networks, the parent company of Hallmark Channel, in a prepared statement. “Across our brand,...

Without an introduction, without even a word from creators Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson, the “Broad City” Comic-Con panel began by screening an entire episode. The hilarious and inspired sixth episode of Season 4 was filled with admirable moments, delighting the attendees who packed the expansive Indigo Ballroom in San Diego, but one aspect stood out:
Every time the name “Donald Trump” came up, it was bleeped (just like the many swear words uttered by Abbi and Ilana during their New York City adventures). But no one brought it up after the episode ended. Neither Jacobson or Glazer said anything during their 10 minutes spent previewing Season 4, and no fan asked about it during the ensuing Q&A.

We started reading The Wicked + The Divine in trade paperback, which meant that the story built a momentum that didn’t get interrupted by waiting for issues. The final events of Fandemonium (issue #11) hit like a brick to the face. Ananke deifies Laura only to kill her moments later. And on the heels of Baphomet murdering Inanna. Surprising. Laura’s been our naive and unreliable narrator this whole time. She’s been our witness and audience analog since the beginning. But as of issue #11, page 22, she’s dead.

It's that time again. Within a heartbeat of the first awards contenders going on general release in autumn, the strategically deployed "controversies" begin to roll out, some more transparently targeted as smear campaigns than others.
Dirty tricks are all part of awards season tradition in Hollywood - the fact that many of the big hitters tend to be based on real events makes it especially easy for rival 'camps' to find loose threads to pull on - and a lot of the debate will essentially boil down to 'he said, she said'.
Still, it's sometimes worth digging through to see if there's any substance beneath the slurs. For our cheats' guide to this year's brouhahas, read on…

Who is Oscar Isaac? He stars as a fictitious '60s folk singer in the new Coen Brothers' film "Inside Llewyn Davis," and although he's made plenty of films you've probably seen, he's seemingly come out of nowhere, so much so that a reporter at Cannes (where the film won the Grand Prix award) asked the actor, "Where have you come from?"
The 33-year-old was born in Guatemala, raised in Miami, and educated at Juilliard. He's been acting for more than 10 years, just in roles that haven't gotten him a lot of attention -- until now.
Even if you remember him from "Drive" or "Robin Hood," you've likely never heard him sing before, but he's actually been singing for years. Before breaking out as an actor, he sang and played lead guitar in the band The Blinking Underdogs.
Since you'll likely be seeing a lot more of Isaac, here's a...

It is one of the year's best films so far, but Paul Greengrass' "Captain Phillips" has been the subject of more than a few editorials lately citing the film's "inaccuracies".
Whilst some dramatic license is par for the course of these films, the facts are fairly accurate according to Phillips' account. The trouble is, Phillips' fellow crew members who were onboard the Maersk Alabama have disagreed with the events in the movie.
Adding to the complications is that said crew is currently engaged in a multi-million dollar lawsuit with the Maersk Line, which brings their motivations for disputing the film's content into question.
Now, Greengrass himself has taken to Reddit for an Ama and posted a lengthy answer regarding the film's accuracy when asked about it by a user on the system:

A man said to the universe:
"Sir, I exist!"
"However," replied the universe,
"The fact has not created in me
"A sense of obligation."
--Stephen Crane

That man can be found at the center of Werner Herzog's films. He is Aguirre. He is Fitzcarraldo. He is the Nosferatu. He is Timothy Treadwell, who lived among the grizzlies. He is Little Dieter Dengler, who needed to fly. She is Fini Straubinger, who lived in a land of silence and darkness since she was 12. He is Kaspar Hauser. He is Klaus Kinski. He is the man who will not leave the slopes of the Guadeloupe volcano when it is about to explode. He is those who live in the Antarctic. She is Juliana Koepcke, whose plane crashed in the rain forest and she walked out alive. He is Graham Dorrington, who flew one of the smallest airships ever built...
"Sir, I exist!"
"However," replied the universe,
"The fact has not created in me
"A sense of obligation."

Here is a collection of a dozen of the best documentaries I saw in 2012. It's not a "best of the year" list. Just some good memories of these films.
I will not burden you again with another complaint about lists. More than ever, I despise them because they shift focus away from a film and toward a list. When I recently caught up with "Django Unchained," for example, I gave it four stars. The comments section was overrun with readers asking if that meant it was now on my Top Ten list. One reader insisted on knowing which title it replaced. Although the piece was some 2,000 words long, another reader insisted he still wanted to see "my official review."
All I can do with any film is tell you that I've seen it, and what I thought about it. If it sounds interesting to you, it might be worth seeking out.

I don’t go to movies to be told what to think. Even if I agree with what I’m being told is right, I am offended by the arrogance of having that decided for me.
This is a movie about kids who can’t read for adults who can’t think. My logline for this movie would be: it’s the opposite of Stand And Deliver (stupid students and incompetent teachers) crossed with Not Without My Daughter; reduce and simmer mixture until you reach lowest common denominator.
The movie opens with the superimposed text “inspired by actual events.” That’s quite a suspicious redundancy. My personal opinion (sic) is that all events are actual by definition, unless someone else sees them differently. I presume this is the case as there is no prologue nor epilogue after the film to that describes the “actual events” the film inspired.

Thanks to the efforts of the Hero Initiative and comics fans and pros, Robert L. Washington was able to receive a proper funeral.
On Monday, June 25th, a funeral service was held for Robert L. Washington III in the Bronx borough of New York City, with a second service to come in Detroit, Michigan. The service was attended by various comic book creators, classmates, and friends from Robert’s various creative, work, and hobby circles.
Through the actions of Robert’s friends from Milestone Media, Inc. and his classmates from The Roeper School, The Hero Initiative was able to use all of your donations to pay for the service and provide Robert’s mother and two of his sisters with the means to travel from Detroit, Michigan to New York and give him a proper funeral.

There's a void at the heart of Werner Herzog's death-row film
In 2001, a teenager named Michael Perry from the small town of Conroe, Texas was convicted of murdering a 50-year-old nurse, Sandra Stotler, whose car he wanted to steal. His accomplice Jason Burkett was convicted of two other related murders, for which Perry was not in fact charged. Burkett finally denied killing the nurse, blaming Perry – and Perry denied killing the nurse, blaming Burkett. Burkett got a life sentence after a sensational, heart-rending plea to the jury from his ageing father, also in prison for life. But Perry got a capital sentence and stayed on death row for a decade until the state of Texas administered a lethal injection in 2010. In the weeks leading up to his execution, film-maker Werner Herzog interviewed Perry, Burkett, the victims' family members, and prison officers to create this documentary.

"The Adventures of Tintin" dominated the nominations but it was "Rango" that received the most trophies at the 10th Visual Effects Society (Ves) awards. Stan Lee received the the Lifetime Achievement Award and visual effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull received the George Melies Award. Patton Oswalt hosted the event held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Antonion Banderas, Lou Ferrigno, director Chris Miller, Marc Webb, and Jennifer Yuh Nelson presented awards. But the surprise appearance by Martin Scorsese was the highlight of the evening.

The visual effects that we are seeing in movies these days are absolutely mind blowing. At this point it doesn't seem like there's any excuse for a film to have bad visual effects unless the people hired lack talent, or the studio is keeping the cash in their pockets.
There's a lot of good nomination this year such as Captain America, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean 4, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Out of all of these I think that Planet of the Apes might take home the top prize, those apes were incredibly freaky looking. Weta did an amazing job with this movie, and out of all the other nominations this was the movie I was most impressed by. What are your thoughts? What movie did you think have the best visual effect in 2011?
Here's the full press release with all of the nominations:

hollywoodnews.com: Over the weekend, the Visual Effects Society announced the nominees for its 10th Annual Ves Awards ceremony, recognizing summer tentpoles (“Harry Potter,” “Captain America”) and surprise hits (“Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” “Hugo”) for their outstanding visual effects artistry in 23 categories of film, animation, television, commercials, special venues and video games.
“The standard of the creative work that is being considered this year is unbelievably high across all categories,” said Jeffrey A. Okun, Chair of the Visual Effects Society. “The judges faced a huge challenge because all of the work was so far above the norm. We’re honored to have the opportunity to focus the spotlight on the outstanding work that has contributed to some of the highest grossing films and broadcast projects of all time.”

Into the Abyss
Directed by: Werner Herzog
Running Time: 1 hr 50 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: November 11, 2011 (Chicago)
Plot: In this documentary, director Werner Herzog goes to Conroe, Texas, to interview two inmates, one of which is on death row. Herzog learns in great detail about the murderous events that have led them to such a place, while interviewing family members about their loss.
Who’S It For? As this Abyss belongs to the interpretation of Herzog, one shouldn’t immediately expect an unbiased discussion of the death penalty. Regardless of which side of the debate you are on, Herzog’s interest in the subject will keep you on board with his film.
Overall
With his previous documentary Cave of Forgotten Dreams coming out only this past summer, director/documentarian Werner Herzog returns to theaters with another foray into a land of “forgotten dreams,” yet this one is less obscure and...

Illustrator Mike Perry prides himself on his Diy ethos; Hand Job is his cheekily-named book that's a collection of hand-drawn type. For Perry's new show Lost in the Discovery of What Shapes the Mind, which opens Friday at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, he took his handmade aesthetic one step further, creating a behind-the-scenes blog documenting the prep work. True to the exhibition's name, Perry's process photos are every bit as visually-intriguing as we expect the show to be.
Creating cards using a Gocco printer.
A 3-D ladder to somewhere--or nowhere.
Perry brought his hand-drawn character to the gallery site plan.
And as you can see from the center of the sketch, he's even managed to build an entire house.
