Columbia Records is facing a discrimination lawsuit filed by chief executive Ron Perry’s former executive assistant, who claims she was forced to resign for opposing allegedly discriminatory hiring practices by recommending non-Black candidates for an administrative position.
The complaint was filed amid increased scrutiny around corporate efforts and programs aimed at boosting diversity, equity and inclusion after the Supreme Court’s decision knocking down affirmative action. Last week, CBS Studios and its parent Paramount were sued for allegedly carrying diversity quotas that discriminate against straight white men.
Patria Paulino, in a lawsuit filed on Feb. 28 in New York federal court, says she was tasked with filling a vacancy for an administrative assistant position to Perry. According to the complaint, she was allegedly told she could only hire Black candidates for the role because Perry has allegedly been the subject of multiple racial discrimination complaints by former employees.

On the eve of heading up to Canada this week to attend the Toronto Film Festival, where his documentary “Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero” has its world debut Saturday night, pop superstar Lil Nas X was playing it nonchalant about stepping outside the music realm a bit to be the center of a splashy event in the movie world. “Not really,” he answers, when asked whether it means anything special to him to have a gala premiere at North America’s biggest film event. “I mean, I’m excited to go there and to see what people think, and also, I’ve never been to a film festival, so maybe I’ll meet people and and build some future relationships. That can be cool.”

With close to 365 days of flawless weather, outdoor dining is a year-round occurrence in Los Angeles, and even more so during a pandemic. And now that summer is officially here, there’s nothing like a lively patio, especially in the power-lunch centers of Beverly Hills and Century City, where the majority of talent agencies and entertainment law firms are perched.
Industry regulars say that patios throughout Century City and Beverly Hills are bustling these days. “As Beyoncé declares in her new single, ‘Break My Soul,’ we are ‘back outside’,” says Patrik-Ian Polk, co-executive producer of Starz’s P-Valley. “As convenient as Zoom meetings are, nothing beats the in-person L.A. business lunch circuit. It’s a vital part of the entertainment industry social scene that was sorely missed.” UTA partner Darnell Strom tells THR that he feels it’s harder to get a reservation “last second” right now in the area.

For all the posturing and promises extended to women in music for years, the music industry has proven almost entirely ineffective at diversifying the mostly male ranks that create music’s biggest tracks. That’s according to the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative’s latest “Inclusion in the Recording Studio?” report, which for the past five years has analyzed gender makeup of artists, songwriters, and producers behind all of the tracks on the Billboard’s year end Hot 100 and on the nominations for major Grammy categories, effectively quantifying how little representation...

Megan Thee Stallion hopped on the remix of BTS’ disco-pop hit “Butter,” contributing a breezy, end-rhyme heavy verse that namedrops Stevie Wonder and Hubba Bubba gum. “Smooth like cocoa butter/My drip more than a puddle,” she raps. “They know that I’m the wave/Take over every summer.”

21st century pop icons BTS released their new single 'Butter' today. The official music video accompanying the song is also available now. “Butter” is a dance pop track that easily becomes listeners’ favorite earworm, with its distinctive baseline and crisp synth sounds. Sometimes smooth and at times charismatic, the duality of BTS they claim to “owe [it all] to [my] mother” will melt listeners' hearts. The fun and witty lyrics brimming with positive and bright energy will instantly uplift moods.
A range of musicians including Rob Grimaldi, Stephen Kirk, Ron Perry, Jenna Andrews, Alex Bilowitz and Sebastian Garcia have lended their hands in writing the song. Leader Rm also partook in the making of the track to add in the signature BTS style.
The electric performance amplifies the song’s energy. The choreography is a combination of group and unit dances executed in razor sharp precision, yet without losing its cool demeanour.

For the last month, amid the usual teen flicks and true-crime shows, an erotic drama has sat at the top of Netflix’s list of most popular offerings. That film, 365 Days (365 Dni) — which movie critics have called a Polish 50 Shades of Grey — has garnered an intense, if controversial, reaction on social media, and it’s now sending a spate of new artists to the top of music charts to boot.

And “no going to packed bars,” Reed added in his Medium post this week. “No eating at restaurants. No brunch. New Jersey saw its first MTV Video Music Awards this year, and the state repped hard with the cast of “The Sopranos” taking the stage and The Jonas Brothers performing off-site at legendary Asbury Park venue The Stone Pony. Fans celebrated the legacy of Missy Elliott as she was awarded with this year’s Video Vanguard Award, late-addition Miley Cyrus performed her single “Slide Away” and Lizzo brought down the house with renditions of “Truth Hurts” and “Good as Hell” in front of a giant inflatable derriere. But there’s much more that happened behind-the-scenes and far out of cameras’ reach at Newark’s Prudential Center on Aug. 26.
Light-up bracelets and locked up phones: Attendees were met with plastic light-up bracelets when they got to their seats. During performances such as Cabello and Mendes’ “Señorita,” the bracelets illuminated to bathe the stadium in color. Those in the pit for the...

Sometimes, Paul Janeway admits, when touring the world with his band, St. Paul and the Broken Bones, he’ll find himself with this “weird desire” to return to a more simple life. Like, say, one spent working at one of the body shops in his rural hometown of Chelsea, Alabama.
But such feelings are fleeting. Because while members of his family have never wavered in their intense Southern pride, as Janeway matured with age — and particularly once he began self-identifying as “uber-liberal” in his twenties — he felt more and more conflicted with his roots.

Joel Klaiman is leaving Columbia Records, Variety has confirmed. A veteran promotion and marketing executive, he joined the label in 2012 and most recently served as executive VP and Gm. Among his responsibilities, Klaiman oversaw the label’s marketing, digital marketing, promotion, publicity, branding, sync licensing, video production and content development departments.
Klaiman’s exit comes seven months after Ron Perry took the top job at the Sony Music label and in the wake of recent departures by senior VP of pop promotion Jon Borris, A&R executive Mark Williams and Evp of Marketing Doneen Lombardi. According to sources, Perry continues to restructure staff as he settles into his chairmanship, though Klaiman’s exit is said to be a “mutual parting.”

Sony Music has entered into a formal partnership with Tha Lights Global, the company co-founded by Dooney Battle, best known for managing Lil Pump, Variety has learned. The multi-million-dollar deal will align Tlg with Sony Music and allow the label to place or distribute its artists through any of Sony’s own properties, among them Columbia, Epic and RCA Records.
The deal was said to involve multiple bidders and a price tag that neared $10 million, though some sources place the final tally at nearly twice that figure. Sony eyed the venture as a way to fortify its efforts in the Urban realm, say insiders, viewing Hlg as a forward-thinking, hip-hop-centric, youth-oriented hub with a significant social media footprint thanks to a stable of influencer talent.
Whispers of an impending deal had been floated for some time as Tlg artist Dominic Fike was reported to be signing with Sony, which Variety has confirmed.

Sia, Diplo, and British artist Labrinth have dropped the first song from their collaborative project, called, naturally enough, LSD. The song is called “Genius” and bears sonic hallmarks of all three — listen to it below. The song came with very little information but it seems more than likely that there is more music to come from the trio.
The three bring a sterling pedigree to the project. Sia, of course, is an artist and hit songwriter/producer whose hits under her own name include “Cheap Thrills,” “Chandelier” and “Elastic Heart” — the latter a collaboration with Diplo and The Weeknd. She recently moved from RCA to Atlantic Records and her debut outing for her new label was last year’s holiday-themed collaboration with Grammy-winning producer Greg Kurstin, “Everyday Is Christmas.”
Diplo’s breakthrough came with M.I.A.’s 2004 debut album “Arular,” which he largely co-produced, and burst into the mainstream with her 2007 hit “Paper Planes.
