From yellow-eyed bully to blue-clad police officer, Scut Farkus made one miraculous turnaround since we were first introduced to him in 1983’s A Christmas Story. Now, the actor who portrayed him, Zack Ward, is spreading Christmas (Story) cheer by commemorating the film’s 40th anniversary.
Taking to X over the weekend, Zack Ward noted the special anniversary and how wild the size of the legacy the movie developed over the years is. “40 years ago today “A Christmas Story” was released and honestly, nobody cared. Now, it is in the Library Of Congress as one of the top 100 most Important films of American Cinematic History from the 20th Century and in the Smithsonian as a national treasure. Wow.” Don’t forget the annual 24-hour marathons, either, Farkus!

The made-for-tv movie was a programming staple for the broadcast networks in the 1970s and 1980s. While it fell out of favor in the 1990s and was even dropped as an Emmy Awards category for three years beginning in 2011, it has been on an upswing as of late. This year, a whopping 61 telefilms are in contention for the five nominations that will be revealed on July 12. Last year, there were only 48 options, compared to 41 in 2021 and 28 in 2020.
All 20,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 26 to cast their 2023 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for their favorite TV movies. A new rule change will require each voter to make no more than five selections in this category, whereas there was previously no limit. As opposed to the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.

Melinda Dillon, who received supporting Oscar nominations for her turns in Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Absence of Malice and portrayed the doting mom in the holiday perennial A Christmas Story, died Jan. 9, her family announced. She was 83.
Right out of the gate, Dillon earned a Tony nomination and Theatre World award in 1963 for her debut performance on Broadway as the childlike wife Honey in the original production of Edward Albee‘s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Later, the Arkansas native played two characters opposite David Carradine — Woody Guthrie’s first wife, Mary, and a dark-haired folk singer named Memphis Sue — in the biopic Bound for Glory (1976), directed by Hal Ashby; was a lesbian hockey wife in George Roy Hill’s Slap Shot (1977); and portrayed John Lithgow’s wife in the family film Harry and the Hendersons (1987).

Holiday favorite “A Christmas Story” is the tale of a typical boy Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley) as he deals with the typical struggles kids face during the Christmas season. One of the many thorns in his side during the film is his issues with bullies Scut and Grover Dill, played by Zack Ward and Yano Anaya, who harass him throughout the movie. In order to create real tension between the two and the other child actors, they were kept separate from the rest of the cast, as Ward revealed in a recent interview with Insider.
“Most of the time Yano and I were not hanging out with the other kids. They had different shooting schedules than we did,” Ward said. “[Director Bob Clark] told our parents, ‘I just want Yano and Zack to hang out and be friends, and if possible, without being rude to the other kids, don’t really...

If you are one of the people who watch "A Christmas Story" yearly as a holiday ritual, you are in good company — really good company.
Peter Billingsley, who starred as Ralphie Parker in the 1983 film, and his Wild West Picture Show Productions partner Vince Vaughn have started a new video podcast called "A Cinematic Christmas Journey." They're tackling films like "Home Alone," "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation," "Four Christmases," "It's a Wonderful Life," and "The Grinch." Of course, they're also breaking down "A Christmas Story."
Joining this episode are Ian Petrella, who played Randy, Scott Schwartz, who played Flick, and R.D. Robb, who played Schwartz, with Billingsley as co-host, along with Nick Schenk, who wrote the script for the new sequel "A Christmas Story Christmas."
The guys begin by talking about how the film did at the box office, and despite good reviews, it wasn't expected to do well, it seems.

If you grew up anywhere around cold weather and snow, you might already know this, but if you're new to icy conditions, here is a public service announcement: Do not touch your tongue to a flagpole when it drops below freezing. Even if someone triple-dog dares you. Of course, if you've seen the 1983 film "A Christmas Story," you probably already know this. You likely have, as TNT and TBS do a marathon of the film every holiday.
This was one of those moments that fills me with remembered dread, as I almost attempted this before I saw "A Christmas Story" for the first time. I wondered how they did this and if poor Scott Schwartz, who played the unfortunate Flick, was okay.

"A Christmas Story" is a staple of the holiday season, with annual 24-hour marathons on TBS and TNT. This year we have double the Ralphie fun because a sequel, "A Christmas Story Christmas," is streaming on HBO Max. Not only that, but Peter Billingsley, who played Ralphie, and his Wild West Picture Show Productions partner Vince Vaughn, have started a new video podcast called "A Cinematic Christmas Journey." The first episode is about "A Christmas Story," and we're getting some fun tales from the set.
It's hosted by Billingsley and Nick Schenk, the screenwriter for the Clint Eastwood films "Gran Torino," "Cry Macho," and "The Mule," as well as the new sequel "A Christmas Story Christmas." For this episode, Schenk and Billingsley welcome Ian Petrella, who played Ralphie's little brother Randy, R.D. Robb, who played Schwartz, and Scott Schwartz, who played Flick. When Bob Clark’s “A Christmas Story” hit theaters the week before Thanksgiving 1983, no one could have foreseen the cultural impact the family comedy would have on the holiday film canon. A modest box office showing (it took in 2 million its first week and failed to crack 20 million during its full run), mixed reviews, and some awards attention from Canada’s Genie Awards added up to a hazy picture of a film that was good enough but hardly a game-changer. Later, of course, came the television airings, landing the film in near-constant rotation during the holiday season and turning it into an unexpected holiday favorite. Familiarity, it seems, didn’t breed contempt when it came to this TNT and TBS staple; it only inspired outright adoration.

Some Christmas stories are timeless classics. Ebenezer Scrooge learns the meaning of the holiday by way of ghastly visitors. The Grinch goes from Christmas thief to hero of Whoville. Buddy the Elf spreads Christmas cheer by singing loud for all to hear. And Ralphie Parker yearns for an official Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-Shot Range Model Air Rifle. Yes, the 1983 movie A Christmas Story is an essential entry in the Christmastime cinematic canon. It’s also a holiday tradition, especially because TNT and TBS have shown the movie in 24-hour marathons regularly on Christmas Eve for years — with millions of TV viewers rooting for Ralphie (Peter Billingsley), younger brother Randy (Ian Petrella), and parents Mrs. Parker (Melinda Dillon) and “Old Man” Parker (Darren McGavin). But you might be surprised to know that A Christmas Story wasn’t the first time that Ralphie was seen onscreen, and it certainly won’t...

Perhaps you've watched the 1983 film "A Christmas Story" over and over again. It would be no surprise. It's often on a loop on Christmas Day. Heck, it might have been on enough in the background of your holiday celebrations that you've seen it more than "Star Wars." From the leg lamp that graces so many of our windows around the holidays, to the terrifying store Santa Claus, to saying, "You'll shoot your eye out" in reference to a rather dangerous Christmas toy, you've definitely heard of it. Today we have a new trailer for the sequel from Warner Bros. Pictures and HBO Max, "A Christmas Story Christmas," a name that could be a theme for many of our actual Christmases.
(Let's not dwell on the fact that there were a few other sequels, including "My Summer Story" in 1994, or the direct-to-dvd sequel that takes place six years after the original...

One of the most famous Christmas films of all time is getting a sequel. HBO Max released the first teaser for “A Christmas Story Christmas,” set to release on the streamer November 17.
The repetitively titled film is a sequel to 1983’s “A Christmas Story,” directed by Bob Clark and based on Jean Shepard’s 1966 novel “In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash.” Set in the ’40s, the original film starred Peter Billingsley as Ralphie Parker, an ordinary 9-year-old boy engaging in various hijinks around Christmastime while desperately yearning to get a Bb gun for the big holiday. Shepard narrated the film as an adult Ralphie reminiscing about his childhood. The film was a moderate success during its original theatrical run, grossing about 69 million against a 3 million budget, but became a seasonal classic thanks to repeated television airings, and receives annual 24-hour marathons on cable channels such as TNT and TBS.

The teaser trailer for the long-awaited “A Christmas Story” sequel is jam-packed with holiday nostalgia. From dusty “fragile” leg lamps to triple dog dare mistakes, the first look at the HBO Max movie sequel, officially titled “A Christmas Story Christmas,” promises all the holiday retread you could shake a turkey leg at.
The original Ralphie, Peter Billingsley, returns to his iconic role now looking a lot more like “the old man” than the young little glasses-wearing kiddo who hungered for one thing, a Red Ryder air rifle. The 51-year-old actor joins past cast members as he returns to his hometown in hopes of recreating the magical Christmases from his past, this time for his own kids.
Additional stars reprising their roles from the 1983 original include Zack Ward, playing the former town bully Scut Farkus who is now a police officer, plus R.D. Robb and Scott Schwartz as the double dog...

If "8-Bit Christmas" didn't tickle your nostalgic holiday bone last year, HBO Max is going to try again with a more direct approach. In November, the streaming service is bringing a sequel to the beloved 1983 holiday classic "A Christmas Story," complete with a redundant title and the return of the film's original cast members.
"A Christmas Story Christmas" is bringing back Peter Billingsley as the air rifle-loving Ralphie, both eyes and glasses intact, but he's all grown up now with a family of his own. When the holidays roll around this time, Ralphie is taking his family back to the Cleveland Street house in Indiana to "deliver his kids a magical Christmas like the one he had growing up." The first teaser for "A Christmas Story Christmas" has just arrived online, and while it only gives us a sneak peek of what's to come, it's leaning heavily on how beloved...

Ralphie Returns!! HBO Max has revealed a teaser, without any footage, for the sequel A Christmas Story Christmas. This was inevitable - we all knew one day they'd continue the story from A Christmas Story, the beloved holiday classic, especially in this nostalgia streaming era where anything from the past is being rebooted again. (Everything!!). This film will take place in the 1970s following an adult Ralphie catching up with his old childhood friends. Ian Petrella, Scott Schwartz, R. D. Robb, and Zack Ward will reprise their roles of Randy Parker, Flick, Schwartz, and Scut Farkus, respectively. Erinn Hayes, River Drosche, and Julianna Layne will play Ralphie's wife and his kids while Julie Hagerty will play Mrs. Parker in a role originated by Melinda Dillon (who retired from acting in 2007) in the original film. The film will be dedicated to the memory of Darren McGavin (who played Ralphie's Old Man...

Set for release on Thursday, Nov. 17, A Christmas Story Christmas sees Peter Billingsley, now 51, reprise his role as Ralphie Parker. The above footage shows the former child star slip on Ralphie’s signature glasses — but not before we’re treated to a tour of the Parkers’ living room, which looks exactly the same as it did in the original 1983 film. We even get a glimpse of the lampshade that came with the Old Man’s extremely fragile leg lamp!

We haven’t even picked up our charcoal for our Labor Day cookout yet and already HBO Max has announced a quartet of four holiday movies! According to Deadline, HBO Max will release four such movies between November and December, starting with a sequel to 1983’s annual staple A Christmas Story.
The lineup as of now:
A Christmas Story Christmas (some title!), due out on November 17
Holiday Harmony and A Christmas Mystery, both on November 24
A Hollywood Christmas, set for December 1
A Christmas Story Christmas, which was announced earlier this year, isn’t the first A Christmas Story sequel. First came 1994’s My Summer Story (originally released as It Runs in the Family), also directed by the late Bob Clark. A decade ago came A Christmas Story 2, with Daniel Stern as The Old Man. This upcoming HBO Max sequel will ignore A Christmas Story 2…just like the rest of us.

Zack Ward almost didn’t play Scut Farkus, the bully he made famous in the 1983 holiday classic A Christmas Story.
“I had like eight auditions for it and finally, I got the role as the sidekick,” the actor, 49, tells People. “I wasn’t the bully. I only had like two lines and I showed up on set right beside Yano Anaya and met [director] Bob Clark for the first time. He saw that I was a foot taller than Yano and said, ‘You get his lines, he gets yours.’ So Scut Farkus became the bully and I became the beloved jackass of Christmas.
