Editor’s Note: The article below contains spoilers for the Dexter Series finale and Dexter: New Blood’s Season 1 finale. Now that the character of Dexter (Michael C. Hall) is dead, having been killed by his son Harrison (Jack Alcott) after Dexter: New Blood season 1, the show’s writer Clyde Phillips is focused on expanding the universe through numerous spin-offs. One of these spin-offs that has been confirmed so far is Dexter: Trinity, which will focus on the character of Arthur Miller (John Lithgow) in the years before Dexter season 4 as he commits horrific crimes as the Trinity Killer. Last week, it was said that Showtime wouldn’t be ordering another season of the Dexter revival Dexter: New Blood – which made a lot of sense, given what happened in the season finale. Clyde Phillips, who served as showrunner on the first four seasons of Dexter and on Dexter: New Blood, said he would be interested in working on a show called Harrison, which would follow the story of Dexter’s son… and now People reports that Phillips is going to have the chance to tell a story that revolves around Harrison. But apparently the show isn’t going to be called Harrison. Instead, it’s being referred to as “a new version” of Dexter: New Blood. So Dexter: New Blood will continue after all, with the new season set to depict the ongoing emergence of Dexter’s son Harrison.

Dexter: New Blood may have ended with Dexter Morgan’s death, but the idea of Michael C. Hall’s character will return to TV screens soon enough. Hall’s involvement in Showtime’s planned New Blood Season 2 and the prequel series Origins isn’t confirmed yet. But the network has shared some details about the second season of New Blood and the serial killer’s prequel story. Here’s what we know about the next season of Dexter: New Blood and the prequel series Dexter: Origins.

Showtime’s taking a deep dive into the world of Dexter, the serial killer who kills serial killers, with an origin series and more of Dexter: New Blood. The origin story, currently titled Dexter: Origins but that may change, will examine Dexter Morgan’s backstory.
Per Showtime: “Dexter: Origins will dramatize young Dexter Morgan at the outset of his transition into the avenging serial killer he would become. Set in the Miami that was a hotbed of real serial killers of his time, the show will begin as Dexter graduates college to join Miami Metro, where he meets younger versions of many of the characters we came to know in the original Dexter. And, of course, the show will also focus on Dexter’s family, including a very-much-alive Harry and a very formidable, teenage Deb.”

Showtime is following in the footsteps of Paramount as the network reportedly has plans for spinoffs and expansions of its popular series Billions and Dexter. “Dexter: Origins” will follow a young Dexter Morgan as he transitions into the notorious serial killer he would eventually become with Clyde Phillips attached to executive produce. Set in Miami, young Dexter will encounter the younger version of staple “Dexter” characters, while also focusing on his familial relationships.

Last week, we heard that Showtime was considering ordering a prequel series to their popular show Dexter, which finished its eight season initial run back in 2013, then recently came back for a new season (called Dexter: New Blood) that appeared to wrap it up for good. Now Showtime has taken the prequel series a step beyond consideration – The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that they have gone ahead and ordered the series.
Clyde Phillips, who served as showrunner on the first four seasons of Dexter and returned to the job for Dexter: New Blood, will be overseeing the Dexter franchise for the network. Yes, they’re talking franchise now. The prequel series isn’t the only Dexter-related project they expect to be working on in the near future. Other possibilities include “spinoffs that trace the back stories of some of the show’s most iconic characters. This includes John Lithgow’s memorable Trinity Killer.

Chris McCarthy, the Paramount Global exec who was handed oversight of Showtime last year, is doubling down on his franchise plans for the premium cable network.
The exec who is credited with growing Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone franchise for the streamer is expanding two of Showtime’s prized dramas — Dexter and Billions — with multiple offshoots in the works, sources confirm to The Hollywood Reporter.
The linear cable network is developing as many as four series connected to the Billions franchises — including Millions and Trillions — from exec producers Brian Koppelman and David Levien. The Billions co-creators have been in business with an overall deal at Showtime since 2019 and the finance drama now ranks as the cabler’s longest-running scripted original series.
As for Dexter, McCarthy announced Monday that Showtime has gone straight to series on a prequel series — Dexter: Origins — that will tell the origin story of Michael C. Hall’s...

Showtime, er, Paramount+ with Showtime, is facing a major overhaul. The Paramount Global-owned premium-cable channel is shifting its focus to franchises, which is in turn bringing about some very questionable names beyond just the platform itself. Among the plans is to turn “Billions” into a universe with spinoffs working-titled — wait for it — “Millions” and “Trillions.”
Much like the new name for Showtime itself, we feel obligated to point out that this is not a joke. The Wall Street Journal, via an interview with Showtime boss Chris McCarthy, first reported the plans for the new Showtime. A spokesperson for McCarthy confirmed the news of all the series ordered and planned, which also includes another “Billions” spinoff set in Miami (and possibly even a fourth “Billions” spinoff) and a “Dexter” prequel series, for IndieWire.
The South Florida-set “Billions” spinoff sounds like it will have a crypto-currency angle. Another potential series in the franchise has a London setting.

The 2021 revival of “Dexter”, titled “Dexter: First Blood”, proved to be phenomenally successful for Showtime with the finale bringing in a record-breaking 3 million viewers — so why isn’t a second season in the works?
According to a report from Deadline, there have been “talks” about more “Dexter” but nothing definitive.
TVLine goes a step further to report that a sequel series had been in the works — focusing on Harrison (Jack Alcott), son of Michael C. Hall’s Dexter Morgan — but those plans won’t be moving forward.

When Dexter: New Blood wrapped its run in January 2022, there were plenty of questions.
None of those questions centered on the fate of the franchise's leading man, Dexter Morgan.
At the end of Dexter: New Blood, the titular killer was dead, and Showtime -- and key creatives -- were not ruling out following Dexter's son, Harrison, in a potential second season of the revival.
A year later, that project is officially dead and, err, buried
TV Line reported Tuesday that the project would not be moving forward with a follow-up to New Blood.
The decision is somewhat surprising.
New Blood scared up enormous numbers for Showtime, but maybe the cabler didn't think the franchise was viable without Michael C. Hall.
It would be a tough sell to have a show set in the Dexter universe without the titular character, so maybe it's not a bad thing that Showtime is moving on from the series.

If you haven’t watched Dexter: New Blood, there will be spoilers. Eight years after Dexter concluded, Showtime brought the Michael C. Hall series back for Dexter: New Blood. The series was conceived as a limited series, but its success led to the network considering a second season. TVLine has heard that Dexter: New Blood won’t continue, but that Showtime is considering a Dexter prequel series instead.
Showrunner Clyde Phillips wanted to use Dexter: New Blood as an opportunity to set things right and conclude Dexter’s story in a more satisfactory manner. The limited series found the serial killer with a heart of gold reuniting with his son Harrison (Jack Alcott). While attempting to bond with his now grown-up child, they begin investigating a sinister killer hiding in plain sight in their small town. Since Dexter: New Blood was such a success for Showtime, there has to be some kind of killer sequel in the works, right?
Not exactly, Deadline has learned. There have been talks about expanding the Dexter universe but that’s all they are for now — talks. One of the ideas that has been discussed is a prequel but nothing is solid at this time.
A spokesperson for Showtime declined comment.
Interest in the future of the franchise has taken a front seat after Paramount Global said Tuesday that Showtime will no longer be a stand-alone brand. Titled “Dexter: New Blood,” the brand new revival season of Showtime’s “Dexter” was a huge hit for the network, becoming the most-watched series in Showtime history. The series averaged over 8 million viewers weekly across platforms, proving that there’s still demand for more stories in the “Dexter” universe. But are we getting another season of “New Blood”?
According to TV Line this week, Showtime is Not moving forward with “Dexter: New Blood” Season 2 – but that certainly doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of the fan-favorite character.
TV Line reports, “According to insiders, Showtime — which will soon merge with Paramount+ — is exploring a number of new iterations of Dexter, including a prequel series centered around a young version of the titular antihero.”
The finale of “Dexter: New Blood” ended with the murder of Michael C. Hall‘s Dexter Morgan, suggesting the revival season was indeed a true and final finale for the series.

"Dexter" is a show with a history almost as tumultuous as that of its titular antihero. The gory crime drama follows Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), a blood spatter analyst by day and vigilante serial killer by night. Season 1 of the Showtime drama debuted in 2006 to positive reviews and reigned as the premium channel's highest-rated series for the next four years. Seasons 2 and 4 are widely regarded as the show's best, with the latter boasting a fantastic performance by John Lithgow as the Trinity Killer, one of TV's most terrifying villains. After the departure of showrunner Clyde Phillips, "Dexter" began a downward slide that ran all the way up to its disappointing series finale, frequently remembered as one of the worst of all time. Eight years after Dexter drove his boat into the eye of a hurricane, the serial killer with a heart of gold returned in "Dexter: New Blood," a...

The late, great Canadian director Jean-Marc Vallée was honored in Banff with a moving tribute during Tuesday’s Rockie Awards.
The Montreal filmmaker — who is best known for directing “Dallas Buyers Club” and “Wild” along with TV series “Big Little Lies” and “Sharp Objects” — died suddenly on Dec. 25, sending shockwaves across the Canadian film industry and Hollywood. Vallée made his name in Canada with films such as “C.R.A.Z.Y.” and “Café de Flore” before transitioning into Hollywood fare.
Vallée received a post-humous Canadian Award of Distinction, with a beautifully edited reel of the director’s movies and candid moments leaving few dry eyes in the audience. The conclusions of dramas like “Ozark” and “Better Call Saul” have ruled cultural conversation about TV in 2022, while new shows such as “Bel-Air” and “As We See It” are a sign of the innovation and creativity to come. Creators and showrunners of some of the top dramas on the small screen came together for Variety’s “A Night in the Writers’ Room” to discuss bringing new ideas to old properties, what it’s like to write a series finale and more.

This article contains spoilers for Dexter: New Blood.
It was easy to be skeptical when Dexter: New Blood was first announced. The descent into ignominy of the original series is well documented by this point, with the Monty Python-evoking finale infamous even among those who never watched the show.
But a dud finale wasn’t Dexter’s only crime, nor the only reason a continuation was a dicey proposition. While the first four seasons remain respected for their dark humor, thorny moral questions, and devastating twists, the second half of the series did everything in its power to squander any goodwill. The finale cops a lot of flack, but it’s still not as bad as the entire run of Dexter’s bafflingly awful sixth season. That the ending would fail to impress after such lows was, really, a foregone conclusion.
As such nobody was exactly losing their minds over the prospect of a revival,...

Regardless of what some fans and critics thought about Showtime’s Dexter revival, Dexter: New Blood has officially become the network’s most-watched series of all time. The show’s 10-episode run averaged around 8 million viewers a week. That’s more than Showtime’s previous signature series, Homeland, and the 3 million viewers that watched the Dexter: New Blood finale helped the revival overcome Homeland season 3’s finale in 2013 to become the most watched season finale on the network. Further, two million of those viewers came from streaming and on-demand platforms, setting another new record for Showtime.
“We’re thrilled by the overwhelming response from the millions of fans of Dexter: New Blood these past 10 weeks,” said the entertainment president of Showtime Networks, Gary Levine. “Whether they loved the finale or couldn’t bear to see it end, we so appreciate their passion.

Many revivals struggle to capitalize on the success of the former show.
But Showtime's revival of Dexter has broken ratings records for the premium cabler.
In fact, the Michael C. Hall-fronted Dexter: New Blood stands tall as the most watched series in Showtime history.
Dexter: New Blood Season 1 averaged 8.2 million total viewers across all platforms, helping it soar in the ratings.
The controversial series-ender managed 3 million total viewers on Showtime alone, down just a hair below the original series finale in 2013's 3.3 million.
On streaming and on-demand platforms, the episode amassed 2 million viewers.
Simply put, many people watched Dexter linearly, and also via other means.
If you watch Dexter: New Blood online, you know the finale killed off the titular character, but could the show return in some capacity?

This Dexter: New Blood review contains spoilers.
Not many shows get a second chance at a finale. But then again, not many shows’ first finales are as bad as Dexter’s was.
After the original Dexter series finale back in 2013 was received, let’s say, less than warmly, Showtime decided to try it again. Following a seven year cool-off period, the network invited original showrunner Clyde Phillips back to envision a new end for Bay Harbor Butcher in the limited series Dexter: New Blood.
Now Dexter: New Blood’s new ending has come and gone and despite mixed fan reaction, it’s hard to argue that it isn’t an improvement…or at least we believe it is. Still, while Dexter: New Blood did an excellent job in wrapping up Dexter’s story once and for all, it left some secondary Dexter characters out in the cold. That’s partly...

This article contains spoilers for the Dexter: New Blood finale.
A polarizing Dexter finale is better than a universally derided one, right? Dexter: New Blood, the revival of Showtime’s hit drama, finished its run last night with a definitive ending that is leagues above the original swan song, but still controversial among the Dexter faithful. Once fans get over the shock that it’s a wrap for ol’ darkly dreaming Dexter, they’ll realize the serial killer’s fate in Dexter: New Blood was the only ending for the character.
Does Dexter Die in Dexter: New Blood?
The only reason to bring Dexter back was to hold him accountable for his behavior. New Blood rightfully asked the audience to reexamine the charming yet sociopathic killer, whom they viewed more like a Batman-esque vigilante than a murder junkie who would stop at nothing to get his next fix. But Dexter is no hero.

With the conclusion of Dexter: New Blood Season 1, fans are going through the motions.
The original series finale got everything wrong, and despite some big flaws, Dexter: New Blood Season 1 Episode 10 was a more satisfactory conclusion.
Still, there are questions about whether the show could go on.
If you watch Dexter: New Blood online, you know the finale killed off Michael C. Hall's titular character at the hands of his son Harrison.
Harrison ultimately evaded justice as Angela Bishop showed up to give him money to escape town and start a new life.
There have long been theories that the show could continue without Dexter at the wheel of the story, and all eyes are on a potential second season or sequel series with Harrison.
"As you can imagine, that’s not the first time I’ve been asked that," showrunner Clyde Phillips explained to TV Line of a potential new season.

Two pivotal events take place in the penultimate Yellowjackets of Season 1, one in each timeline. Let’s start with the identity of the survivors’ blackmailer, shall we?

Yep, it was definitely him that they chased through the glitter and everything. And how did he know about their secret?...

Dexter: New Blood Episode 10
“Open your eyes and look at what you’ve done!”
When it was announced that Showtime would be reviving Dexter after almost a decade, I was more than dubious. One of the first prestige dramas that I truly loved, I jumped at the chance to review the series when I started writing for Den of Geek in 2012. Unfortunately, the seasons that I covered could be described as disappointing at best. The show was responsible for many sins. Between clearly telegraphed twists, interesting threads stopped dead in their tracks for no apparent reason, and inconsistent characterization, the series’ chief issue was the esteem that the writers had for their lead character long after he deserved any.
On more than one occasion, writers of Dexter would compare their darling to a superhero, and many fans of the series, including in this site’s comment section,...

Spoiler Alert: This interview reveals major storylines from the finale of Showtime’s Dexter: New Blood.
When Clyde Phillips met with Michael C. Hall about returning to the role of Dexter Morgan in what would become Dexter: New Blood, he already knew the serial killer’s life would end.
Hall signed up without hesitation.
Fans of the hit Showtime series Dexter, which ran eight seasons from 2006-2013, rejoined the former Miami Metro blood spatter analyst —now known by the alias Jim Lindsay—and have enthusiastically tuned in to watch his final adventure unfold. And though that journey has now come to an end with his shocking death, the beloved franchise may continue to expand with a little help from his progeny, Harrison Morgan (Jack Alcott).
Phillips spoke with Deadline about whether death was the only conclusion on the table for Dexter, the status of a possible continuation, and what happens...

Spoiler Alert: This story includes details from the finale of Showtime’s Dexter: New Blood.
It’s truly the end of an era as the fate of Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) has been sealed in the final episode of Showtime’s Dexter: New Blood. And whether or not fans like the ending this time around, there’s no going back.
“Dexter Morgan is dead,” series showrunner Clyde Phillips confirmed to Deadline in a conversation that will run immediately following this recap.
Nearly a decade after America’s favorite fictional serial killer disappeared into a Miami hurricane in the original series finale, in New Blood it is revealed that Dexter was alive and well living in Iron Lake, NY under the alias Jim Lindsay.
He had completely changed his life and left every part of his old life behind, until right around the time someone from his past found him.

Dexter: New Blood Episode 9
This is as good as Dexter gets.
While Dexter: New Blood has done more than enough to remove the bad taste left by the original series’ mostly maddening final three seasons, “The Family Business” justifies reviving the show. It’s the best episode of the series since season 4, containing most of the elements that made the deliciously dark drama irresistible; there’s plenty of black humor mixed in, interesting conversations about vigilantism and justice, difficult questions about mitigating problematic behavior, suspenseful games of cat and mouse, and it’s all anchored by knock-out performances. I’ve had my quibbles with this season, but this was what I envisioned as a best-case scenario when Dexter: New Blood was announced. Whether Clyde Phillips and his writer’s room can stick the landing remains to be seen, but “The Family Business” is...

“Dexter: New Blood” staged a reunion (of sorts) in the December 5 episode when Dexter’s new girlfriend, Iron Lake Chief of Police Angela Bishop (Julia Jones), met his old coworker, Miami Metro Captain Angel Batista (David Zayas). The last time viewers saw Batista was in the 2013 series finale, when Dexter (Michael C. Hall) drove his boat into a hurricane and made everyone believe he and his son Harrison had died. Zayas now reveals he had “mixed feelings” about that controversial ending, telling EW, “I felt it might’ve been a little underwhelming.”

Dexter Morgan is proof that there is life after death. Well, fake death, that is. Eight years after the Miami serial killer of bad guys disappeared in a hurricane on the 2006–13 drama’s much-derided ending, the antihero is back for a 10-episode thrill ride. Says Hall, “We wanted to do something decidedly new but also maintain fundamental parts of the original.” It’s safe to say the limited revival absolutely, uh, kills it. Picking up 10 years after the finale, New Blood shows Dexter with a new identity (mild-mannered cashier Jim Lindsay), a new home and a new vow not to kill.
