Though festivals and distributors were very excited to sell you a “final” film by Jean-Luc Godard, Fabrice Aragno made clear Phony Wars would not be the last transmission. Continuing Tupac-like beyond-the-grave releases, it’s been announced this year’s Cannes Film Festival will include in their “Events” sidebar the “ultimate film by Jean-Luc Godard,” Scenarios, which I cannot possibly summarize better than their official description and thus:
Scenarios is the title that Jean-Luc Godard chose to give to a final 18-minute gesture, made, literally, the day before his voluntary death. Furthermore, Jean-Luc Godard recorded a 34-minute film in which, mixing still images and moving images, halfway between reading and vision, he presented the Scenarios project .
Worth noting that Scenario was, with Phony Wars, one of two films with which Godard planned to end his career. A project made with single-digit hours left on Earth… well, one’s mind reels at the potential.

Jeanne du Barry marked Johnny Depp’s French debut. His comeback after the $50 million defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard created a stir. But now, the director Maiwenn is in legal trouble over spitting on a French journalist. Below are all the details you need to know about the incident.
Mediapart magazine editor-in-chief Edwy Plenel filed a police complaint against the filmmaker last year in March. The incident took place ahead of the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. The journalist accused Maiwenn of pulling him by the hair and spitting on them while he was dining at a restaurant.

French director Maïwenn has been fined $435 (€400) for assaulting a leading French journalist in the lead-up to the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, according to French media reports.
The charges relate to an incident last March when the actress-director came across Edwy Plenel, co-founder and editor-in-chief of investigative news website online Mediapart, in a Paris restaurant.
Eyewitnesses said she approached Plenel while he was lunching with his lawyer, pulled back his head by his hair and then spat in his face. Restaurant staff identified her as the attacker.
The investigative journalist filed a police complaint against Maïwenn for assault shortly after.
News of the incident broke just days after Maïwenn’s film Jeanne du Barry, co-starring Johnny Depp, had been announced as the opening film at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
According to radio network FranceInfo, Maïwenn was ordered by a Paris court to pay the fine ($435) on the charges of “voluntary violence without interruption of work.

The case involving director Maiwenn spitting in the face of prominent French journalist Edwy Plenel — a scandal that almost eclipsed the presence of Johnny Depp on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet in May — is officially closed.
Maiwenn, whose latest film “Jeanne du Barry” starring Depp world premiered on opening night of Cannes last year, was ordered by a Paris court on Tuesday to pay a fine of €400 ($435) on the charges of “voluntary violence without interruption of work,” according to the news wire FranceInfo.
Plenel — who is editor-in-chief and founder of Mediapart, an independent French investigative online newspaper behind many bombshell reports including a recent one on Gerard Depardieu — filed a police complaint on March 7, accusing Maiwenn of aggression while he was eating in a restaurant.
Maiwenn, who was sitting by herself at a nearby table, allegedly grabbed Plenel by the hair and spit in his face, then left the restaurant.

Luc Besson has been cleared of all rape charges from a 2018 case involving actress Sand Van Roy.
The “Léon, the Professional” director was accused of raping the Dutch-Belgian actress multiple times over the course of two years. The Van Roy case against Besson was dismissed in 2021 after an investigation, but the legal charges are now officially dropped by the highest court in France as of June 21, 2023.
“This decision confirms the dismissal in favor of Luc Besson and confirms all the decisions of the last five years which have found him not guilty,” Besson’s attorney Thierry Marambert said in a statement to IndieWire. “It therefore puts a definitive end to this procedure initiated in 2018, during which Luc Besson was systematically cleared by all the magistrates who examined the case. As a lawyer, I welcome this exemplary procedure, which has allowed the manifestation of the truth which is that Luc Besson is innocent.

“Jeanne du Barry” director Maïwenn is setting the record straight on her altercation with Mediapart editor-in-chief Edwy Plenel.
Maïwenn confirmed earlier this year that she did in fact pull Plenel’s hair and spit in his face at a Paris restaurant; Plenel filed a police report March 7 alleging the incident took place in late February. The writer/director/actress, née Maïwenn Le Besco, told French newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche (via Screen Daily) that the encounter with Plenel stemmed from her feeling “morally violated” that Mediapart published rape allegations against her ex-husband, director Luc Besson, without notifying her.
“I don’t blame Mediapart for their investigations into Luc Besson; I blame them for what they have done to me,” she said. “It was a cataclysm. I felt morally violated. There’s no justification for attacking a journalist, but there’s no justification for violating a woman’s intimacy and trust.

Johnny Depp’s Comeback Movie ‘Jeanne du Barry’ Rides High at French Box Office After Cannes Premiere
After being greeted with a seven-minute standing ovation on opening night of the Cannes Film Festival, Johnny Depp’s comeback movie “Jeanne du Barry,” directed by Maiwenn, has charmed French audiences after debuting in cinemas.
The costume drama, which stars Depp as the French King Louis Xv and marks his first leading role in three years, has been having a strong run at the French B.O., proving that the controversial star is still bankable. At least in France.
The film was widely released by Le Pacte on 650 screens and has grossed nearly $4.1 million from more than 550,000 tickets sold in two weeks, according to Comscore France. Currently playing across 800 screens, the film got mixed reviews in Cannes, but still has the potential of selling up to 850,000 tickets (an estimated $6.4 million), according to Eric Marti at Comscore France.

Bien joué.
Jeanne du Barry — starring Johnny Depp — took a triumphant bow at the box office in France timed to its world premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
The period drama racked up 401,481 admissions in its first week of play, the best showing in a decade for a Cannes opening-night film, according to French distributor Le Pacte. The last movie to do more when sailing into French cinemas simultaneous to its Cannes stop was Baz Luhrmann’s 2013 feature The Great Gatsby, starring Leonardo DiCaprio (760,438 admissions).
The Great Gatsby, of course, was a major Hollywood studio film.
More times than not, Cannes chief Thierry Frémaux selects an independent title to open the storied festival. It is also common for a French-language film, such as Jeanne du Barry, to receive the coveted spot. (It’s tradition for the opening-night film to unfurl in French cinemas that same night.)

Just a year ago, the image of Johnny Depp smiling and waving atop the Palais steps at the Cannes Film Festival would have been unthinkable to most — including to Depp, himself.
“When you hit the bottom, you hit the bottom, you hit the bottom, then you find the basement to the bottom,” Depp told The Associated Press the day after “Jeanne du Barry”, in which he stars as King Louis Xv, opened Cannes.
This time last year, Depp was immersed in a libel trial he brought against Amber Heard, his ex-wife, based on a 2018 Washington Post op-ed piece in which she referred to herself as “a public figure representing domestic abuse.” A British court had ruled in 2020 that a tabloid labeling Depp “a wife beater” were “substantially true.” Soon after the ruling in the U.K., Hollywood had largely cut ties with Depp, jettisoning him from both the “Fantastic Beasts...

A humbled and defensive Johnny Depp spoke up at the Cannes press conference Wednesday for the fest’s opening-night film Jeanne du Barry. Not only was he moved by the standing ovation in the Grand Theatre Lumière, but he also referred to the wake of the Amber Heard trial headlines (without pointing to it), exclaiming, “In regards to me and my life, the majority of what you’ve read is fantastically horrifically written fiction.”

The fever surrounding this year’s Cannes Film Festival finally broke on Tuesday evening as the 76th edition kicked off in the South of France by hosting Johnny Depp and his opening-night film from Maïwenn, Jeanne du Barry.
There’s wild anticipation every year ahead of the official rolling out the red carpet in front of the Palais des Festivals, but this year’s hype hit another level given the swirls surrounding both the actor and the filmmaker, who also stars as the favored mistress of 18th century monarch Louis Xv, played by Depp. The film, Depp and #Cannes2023 all were trending topics on Twitter by early Tuesday afternoon as debates continued to rage — online and off — over the film’s inclusion in the lineup.

In the prelude to the big Cannes opener, the Johnny Depp-starring “Jeanne du Barry,” a journalist who was spat on by the film’s director has said that the (female) filmmaker is “outspokenly anti-#MeToo.” Maïwenn admitted last week to assaulting the journalist.
“She’s outspokenly anti-#MeToo and she made a gesture to please her world, and that’s why she bragged about it on TV,” stated Edwy Plenel when speaking to Variety in his first interview since the incident. “We could see a sort of pride that echoed that world.”

The French are still enamored with Johnny Depp.
The embattled actor, who hasn’t appeared in public since his protracted 2022 legal battle with ex-girlfriend Amber Heard, received an ecstatic seven-minute standing ovation on Tuesday night at the premiere of Cannes Film Festival’s opening night film “Jeanne Du Barry.”
Depp held back tears as the crowd in the South of France erupted in prolonged applause for his performance as the King Louis Xv. He waved to the audience in the balcony and seemed taken aback by the response.
The film’s director and star Maiwenn also broke out into tears as she briefly took the mic. “I want to share this moment with my lover, with my producer, with Le Pacte,” she said. “It was a production that was difficult to finance … and I want to share this moment with all my team across the theater.”

The assault allegation against “Jeanne du Barry” writer/director/star Maïwenn has become even more complex.
After Maïwenn admitted to attacking French journalist Edwy Plenel, the Mediapart magazine editor-in-chief is citing Maïwenn’s possible motive: retaliation for the publication reporting on her ex-husband Luc Besson’s sexual abuse allegations. “Léon, the Professional” director Besson was accused in 2018 of repeatedly raping Dutch-Belgian actress Sand Van Roy over the course of two years, as well as multiple other women. The case against Besson was dismissed in 2021 after an investigation.
Maïwenn was married to Besson in 1992; she was 16 years old when they wed. Besson knew Maïwenn since she was age 12, and the couple began dating when the actress was 15 years old. Maïwenn said during the 1994 DVD extras for controversial film “Léon, the Professional” that the central relationship was inspired by her and Besson’s love story. The couple divorced in 1997.

With Johnny Depp making his big-screen return on the opening night of the Cannes Film Festival in Jeanne du Barry, after being shut out of Hollywood from battling ex-wife Amber Heard in the courts, festival juror Brie Larson was asked by a reporter at a press conference Tuesday whether she’ll see it.
Larson was asked as an “outspoken advocate for Time’s Up” how she felt about the controversial Depp film being at Cannes.
“You’re asking me that?” The Room Oscar winner pushed back.
“Um, I‘m sorry, I don’t understand the correlation of why me specifically,” Larson continued.

The reporter emphasized how the Captain Marvel thespian was on the celebrity advisory council, and that Depp’s court case against The Sun in which he was labeled a “wife beater” was in the spotlight. So, would the actress actually go see his movie.

French actress-writer-director Maïwenn has confessed to a bit of Franco-American culture clash on the set of her latest movie, Jeanne du Barry. The Cannes opener stars Johnny Depp in his first feature film role in three years, as Louis Xv, and Maïwenn as the 18th century monarch’s favorite mistress. In a recent interview with French Premiere, the filmmaker said that she had been warned not to knock on Depp’s dressing-room door during filming to let him know she was waiting. “One day, I did it anyway,” she said. “And there, he made me understand that I had committed an unacceptable intrusion and asked me how I would have felt if he came knocking on my dressing room door. I replied that everyone does it all the time. Because that’s how a set works in France!”
That’s how a set works in Hollywood, too, or it should anyway.
