Amy Irving is one of those actors whose entire life has been centered around acting and Hollywood. Born to producer and actor Jules Irving and actress Priscilla Pointer, her earliest memories were about movie sets and auditions. She made her Broadway debut at age 13 and went on to study theater at the American Conservatory Theater and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. Married to Steven Spielberg for four years between 1985 and 89, Irving has been around the block for a long time. With a career spanning over five decades, she has been the recipient of an...

True '80s horror kids rarely agree on anything. What's the best "Friday the 13th" rip-off? Some say "The Burning," some say "Sleepaway Camp." Who is the better slasher villain; Freddy, Jason, or Michael Myers? You'll never get them to agree on anything, except maybe one question: What is the best 'Nightmare on Elm Street' sequel?
There are stans for all of them, even the notoriously bizarre "A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge" (especially that one since it has grown in popularity as a favorite among the LGBTQ+ community), but most will say the one Freddy sequel to really get it right was Part 3, "Dream Warriors" which brought back Heather Langenkamp's Nancy to face down Freddy once more, this time backed up by an army of juvenile delinquents who have had enough of being tortured in their dreams by this Christmas sweater-wearing, child-killing, nightmare demon weirdo.

Piper Laurie Keeps Her Chin Up
By Alex Simon
Few living actors can claim to have experienced the Hollywood machine in all its iterations more than three-time Oscar nominee Piper Laurie. Signed by Universal Pictures at 17, their youngest contract player in years, she was in the last generation that were part of the Hollywood “factory,” pushed into “cheesecake” roles that accented physical attributes, as opposed to talent. It was the beginning of a journey.
She was born Rosetta Jacobs in Detroit, Michigan, on January 22, 1932, to immigrant parents of Polish and Russian Jewish descent. When she was still five, the family sent her and her sister to a children’s sanatorium in the mountains to see if her sister’s asthma could be cured. Three years later after being reunited with her family she decided she wanted to become an actress and studied with Benno and Betomi Schneider for several years...

Sarah Palin MGM has announced that former Us vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin has been cast as Chloë Grace Moretz's religious-freak mom in the studio's remake of Brian De Palma's 1976 horror thriller Carrie. Kimberly Peirce, whose Boys Don't Cry earned Hilary Swank a Best Actress Academy Award in early 2000, is set to direct the project. Filming should commence this summer. "An assistant told me that Carrie's mom keeps telling her in the movie: 'They're all going to laugh at you,'" Palin says. "Well, that's what some folks told me when I accepted the [Republican] nomination, and that's what some other folks have told me now about me accepting to star in a Hollywood movie." Sticking her tongue out, Palin adds, "Let 'em. I don't give a dong!" When asked why MGM would want her for the part, Palin explains that the studio was "impressed with my documentary Undefeated, which won the Oscar this year.

Jeffrey comes down the stairs of his home. It’s night, and his mother (played by Priscilla Pointer, the real-life mother of Amy Irving) and Aunt Barbara (Frances Bay) sit on the sofa watching a black-and-white crime drama on the television. Positioned on opposite ends, the space between them opens up like some sort of haunted void where someone (or something) else should be. In Lynch’s films, sofas—which seem like the most harmless piece of furniture possible—become uncanny objects, spooky places that are so familiar that they become unfamiliar.
There is one more point of general application which I should like to add, though, strictly speaking, it has been included in what has already been said about animism and modes of working of the mental apparatus that have been surmounted; for I think it deserves special emphasis. This is that an uncanny effect is often...

When I originally put together the list of the neo-noirs I was planning on including in this retrospective, I had put down two David Lynch titles: Lost Highway (1997) and Mulholland Dr. (2001). Unfortunately, Mulholland Dr., one of my favorite films of the aughts, had already been covered by the site when we attempted the film club, so I didn't want to whip a dead horse by covering it again. Having promised I'd watch Lost Highway with a friend, I was at a loss as to what to watch. I scanned my DVD shelf, my eyes momentarily meeting with Blue Velvet (1986), and I began to mentally scratch my head. I hadn't watched the film in nearly a decade, not since being forced onto a David Lynch kick brought on by the theatrical release of Mulholland Dr. in high school. For some reason, I never had the urge to return to it, not...

John Forsythe was a leading actor on stage, screen and television from the late 1940s, but was never seen in one of his best known roles. He lent his distinctive voice to the role of Charles Townsend, who sent an array of lovely agents on various cases by speaker phone in the Charlie’s Angels television series from 1976 to 1981. The Angels originally included Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson, and Jaclyn Smith, and were later joined by Cheryl Ladd, Shelley Hack, and Tanya Roberts. He reprised his role for feature film adaptations twenty years later, Charlie’s Angels (2000) and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle (2003), starring Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu as a new generation of beautiful detectives. Forsythe became a silver-haired sex symbol in his sixties, when he starred as ruthless oil tycoon Blake Carrington in the ABC prime-time soap opera Dynasty from 1981 to 1989. He frequently found himself at the...
