Ron Howard’s sea-faring escapade In the Heart of the Sea washes up on Blu-ray this month. With a strong cast and usually dependable director, the film presents itself as a maritime adventure, the “incredible true story that inspired Moby Dick,” based on Nathaniel Philbrick’s non-fiction account of the wreckage of the whaling ship Essex by a massive white whale. As such, it forms the very basis of an American epic. If only In the Heart of the Sea could live up to its promises.
The film reinforces its tagline right off the bat by introducing Melville himself (the underused Ben Whishaw). He shows up at the Nantucket home of Thomas Nickerson (Brendan Gleeson), armed with a notebook and a wallet of cash in the hopes that Mr. Nickerson can be convinced to tell the story of what exactly happened on the ill-fated whaling ship the Essex many years before.

One of my favorite films in Ron Howard's long career as a director was "Rush," and part of what I loved about it was how it didn't really feel like a Ron Howard film. There was something audacious and rude and hilarious about the film's unlikable set of main characters. Howard is the perfect studio filmmaker because his work is rarely dangerous or challenging. He makes professional movies with good casts that tend to be good but rarely great. There are a number of Ron Howard films that I like, and a I few that I really like. "Apollo 13." "Frost/Nixon." "Parenthood." "Rush." "Night Shift." "Splash." I like that he's spent his career trying different things. He's capable of putting some of the best technical artists in the business together, and he always seems to give himself to his movies 100%. When I'm not a fan of a film he's made,...

Now that you've seen it, what did you think? "We were headed for the edge of sanity... like we were aberrations, phantoms." Now playing in theaters everywhere is Ron Howard's latest movie In the Heart of the Sea, a story inspired by the whaling adventure that turned into the story of "Moby Dick", written by Herman Melville (who appears in the film as played by Ben Whishaw). Chris Hemsworth plays Owen Chase, a man who wishes to be captain but is assigned first mate on a voyage to hunt whales, captained by George Pollard, played by Benjamin Walker. So how is this adventure? After being delayed, is it worth the wait? Once you see it, leave a comment with your own thoughts on Ron Howard's In the Heart of the Sea. Director Ron Howard’s In The Heart Of The Sea tells the true tale of the 1830 sinking of the whaleship Essex by a massive whale. It’s a rousing epic that turns the endless expanse of the high seas into an arena for an exciting game of cat and mouse between man and beast. Howard’s film is a square, throwback adventure which, despite some clunky dialog and a predictable story, stays afloat for most of its running time.
In The Heart Of The Sea is told in a series of flashbacks, opening in 1850 with author Herman Melville (Ben Whishaw) paying a visit to Tom Nickersson (Brendan Gleeson) to learn if the rumors of a massive whale wrecking the ship on which he served thirty years earlier were accurate. Nickerson tells Melville of his experience as a young man (where he’s played by Tom Holland) aboard the Essex, then...

Save for a few random whale attacks, there’s nothing to hold your attention in Ron Howard’s latest action yarn, In the Heart of the Sea. It’s a grim, plodding affair that cares more about impressing you than entertaining you. The characters are so thin and the themes so haphazard that Howard’s film manages to be about nothing and everything, all at the same time. A couple of moderately-impressive action scenes can’t save In the Heart of the Sea from being a complete wreck.
Warning: This is not an adaptation of Moby Dick! This is an adaptation of a novel by Nathaniel Philbrick about the story that inspired Moby Dick… as relayed to Herman Melville (Ben Whishaw) by Tom Nickerson (Brendan Gleeson), the last surviving member of the doomed Essex. In 1820, the whaling vessel departed Nantucket,...

Two if by Sea: Howard’s Whaling Expedition Sinks to the Fathoms
Herman Melville’s 1851 novel Moby-Dick is one of the seminal epics of American literature, adapted several times for film and television over the decades, though John Huston’s 1956 film version still stands as the most accomplished cinematic rendering. Director Ron Howard adapts Nathaniel Philbrick’s 2000 novel In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex, a retelling of the aquatic ordeal upon which Melville based his famous text. Suffering from some obnoxious moments of stilted bids at heroic nobility from its central characters and weighted down with considerable cliché, the screenplay, adapted by Charles Leavitt, Rick Jaffa, and Amanda Silver, is a framed narrative that doesn’t seem to have sparked the passion of its adapters. Saddled with a PG-13 rating, which hampers the narrative’s more sensational elements, (such as the depiction...

Solid, old-school man-versus-nature adventure melodrama, with a simmering green awareness; rollicking, smart, breathtaking, and sobering. I’m “biast” (pro): generally really like Ron Howard’s films; love Chris Hemsworth and Ben Whishaw
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
In the Heart of the Sea is no Moby Dick. But then, it isn’t trying to be, even if it is based on one real incident that inspired, in part, Herman Melville’s classic American novel. Instead, director Ron Howard has made a film that is solid, old-school man-versus-nature adventure melodrama, as much Mutiny on the Bounty as Cast Away, as much Jaws (and well, wasn’t Moby Dick the original Jaws?) as The Perfect Storm. But The Perfect Storm was underlain with hints of a larger hubris that all of humanity, not just individual people,...

The history of Hollywood’s distortion of and digression from the facts of supposed ‘true stories’ is long and infamous. Any movie that claims to be “based on a true story” can be assumed to be little more than a fantastical recreation of a one-line description of a thing that might have happened. In essence, films based on real stories are the most expensive version of the “I caught a fish this big” exaggeration possible. So if In the Heart of the Sea, the newest film from Ron Howard, makes some serious changes to the story of the Nantucket whaling ship Essex, it can be forgiven.
Less easy to forgive, however, are the egregious storytelling missteps and the shaky application of garish CGI that hobble what should otherwise be a crackling, harrowing story of adventure and survival at sea.
The most embarrassingly misjudged aspect of this film is the framing...

Not even Chris Hemsworth wielding a harpoon can stop Ron Howard’s retelling of the Essex of Nantucket story from losing its way in the waves
“I married a whaleman.” It sounds like the title of a Roger Corman picture, but it’s a world-weary sigh heaved by Charlotte Riley, pregnant wife of Chris Hemsworth’s Owen Chase, first mate of the doomed Essex of Nantucket. He’s off on another dangerous voyage on behalf of the greedy jerks that sit behind their desks while good men put their necks on the line. That’s what Chase is thinking, anyway, when his promised captaincy is bumped down a peg while to-the-manor born George Pollard Jr (Benjamin Walker) is given command. If Chase sits this one out, he’ll get his own commission next time, but will there be a next time with a novice captain running things?
This setup is told in flashback,...

Billed as the story that inspired Moby Dick, Ron Howard's adaptation of Nathaniel Philbrick's National Book Award winner is a shamelessly old-fashioned sea-faring yarn recounting the true story of the Essex, a Nantucket whaleship that sank after being attacked by a giant sperm whale.Told in extensive flashback by Thomas Nickerson (Brendan Gleeson), at the insistence of writer Herman Melville (Ben Whishaw), who is researching his as-yet unwritten masterpiece, In The Heart of the Sea mostly takes place in 1820, as the whaleship Essex leaves Nantucket, Massachusetts under the command of Captain George Pollard (Benjamin Walker). The inexperienced skipper is instantly at loggerheads with his first mate, Owen Chase (Chris Hemsworth), who has sailed for years and believes he should be in charge. Among their crew are...

Oscar winner Ron Howard (“A Beautiful Mind”) directs the action adventure In The Heart Of The Sea, based on Nathaniel Philbrick’s best-selling book about the dramatic true journey of the Essex.
In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story. In The Heart Of The Sea reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade.

Despite a delay in its release, things are very much still full speed ahead for Ron Howard’s new true-life seagoing thriller In The Heart Of The Sea, as demonstrated by the new trailer putting in at the web’s port. Adapted from Nathaniel Philbrick’s Moby Dick origin story of the same name by Charles Leavitt, Howard’s sea movie relays the misadventures of a whaling expedition aboard the Essex led by Captain George Pollard, Jr. (Benjamin Walker) and first mate Owen Chase (Chris Hemsworth) after it comes out second best in an encounter with an angry sperm whale mid-ocean.Being adrift in small boats in the Pacific has been explored before – memorable recently Unbroken and Kon-Tiki also capture that terrifying moment when the wind drops and you’re suddenly 4000 miles from land with only a flying fish to gnaw on – but this one takes us to new and terrifying places.

Chris Hemsworth, aka the Sexiest Man Alive, is following his Thor fame with a couple of comedy roles -- "Vacation" and the new "Ghostbusters" reboot -- but he's also making waves in the thriller "In the Heart of the Sea." The movie is based on the real-life story of the sinking of the whaleship Essex, which inspired the novel "Moby-Dick," and it's headed to theaters December 11. Ron Howard directed the movie, which stars Chris, Cillian Murphy, and Tom Holland, aka the new Spider-Man.
Entertainment Tonight got a first look behind the scenes and, in the on-set video, Chris talks about the cast's 500-calorie-a-day diet to be convincingly starved on screen. Ron Howard mentions that he talked to Tom Hanks about how to lose weight for a film, since the "Cast Away" star has done that a couple of times now.

If there's one thing Old Man Empire taught us, it's never to meddle with a sociopathic whale. And he was gnarly seafarer with kippers for hands and a pipe permanently clenched between the two remaining gnashers he hadn't had prised from his face by a kraken off the Cape of Good Hope. Sadly the crew of The Essex, a similarly salty bunch, never met the kipper-fingered seafarer or had the chance to heed his sage advice. The film stars Chris Hemsworth, Benjamin Walker, George Pollard, Cillian Murphy, Tom Holland, Brendan Gleeson, Jordi Molla and Ben Whishaw as Melville.
In the winter of 1820, during the boom in the whaling business, Essex set out from New England and was torn apart by a mammoth whale. The boat went down, and that is really where this tale begins. It’s the story of cruel survival that involved leadership, cowardice, bad decisions, and cannibalism. I have been writing about the various attempts to adapt this book since it was first published and won the...

In the Heart of the Sea (based on a book of the same name) tells the true story of a shipping voyage that would go on to inspire the classical tale of Moby Dick, and today brings the first trailer and poster for Ron Howard's upcoming adaptation. Come inside to check them out!
Ron Howard and Chris Hemsworth are back together, this time in a period piece out on the high seas. I wasn't sure what to think about this story when I first hear about it, but having seen this trailer, I'm definitely excited to know more. While the human drama elements will most surely be at the forefront, it's pretty obvious that at it's core, In the Heart of the Sea is a disaster flick. I love these kinds of films and Ron Howard does a great job with them (look at Apollo 13), by combining engaging...

Though his latest film, the racing pic Rush, isn’t even in theaters yet, Academy Award-winning director Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind) is already entering production on his next project, a long-in-the-works adaptation of Nathaniel Philbrick’s 2000 bestseller In the Heart of the Sea, shortened to simply Heart of the Sea.
According to Warner Bros’ new press release, production on Heart of the Sea began in England on September 10th. Like Rush, Heart of the Sea is also a period piece and stars Chris Hemsworth as a famous figure from history. This time around, the Thor actor is portraying Owen Chase, the veteran first mate of the Nantucket whaling ship Essex who, after a brutal whale attack in the Pacific during the winter of 1820, struggles to keep other crew members alive while seeking vengeance against the creature.

Production is underway on Ron Howard's adaptation of Nathaniel Philbrick's fact-based book, "In The Heart of the Sea", telling the true story of the 19th century whaling vessel Essex, which eventually served as the inspiration for Herman Melville's "Moby Dick". Titled Heart of the Sea, the film will feature Howard's Rush star, Chris Hemsworth, as the vessel's veteran first mate Owen Chase with Benjamin Walker (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) as its inexperienced Captain, George Pollard, Cillian Murphy as second mate Matthew Joy and Ben Whishaw (Skyfall's Q) as novelist Herman Melville. Here's the official plot: In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Melville's "Moby-Dick". But that told only half the story. Heart of the Sea reveals the encounter's harrowing aftermath,...

Two versions of shipwreck and cannibalism story behind Melville's classic are being made
The story that charts the obsessive, ill-fated hunt for a great white whale has resounded down the generations since the publication in 1851 of Herman Melville's novel, Moby-Dick: or, The Whale. Now the lure of the enormous whale has proved too strong both for film director Ron Howard and for the BBC, who have set off on rival voyages to bring the true story behind Melville's dark saga to audiences.
With Chris Hemsworth, Ben Whishaw and Cillian Murphy lined up in Howard's cast, the director of the new Formula One film Rush returns to England this week to make his next film, In the Heart of the Sea, at the Warner Bros studios in Leavesden, Hertfordshire. Howard has recruited British screenwriter Peter Morgan, who also scripted Rush, to redraft his seafaring screenplay.

Cillian Murphy has joined the cast of Ron Howard's "In The Heart Of The Sea" at Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures.
Based on Nathaniel Philbrick's fact-based book, it follows the Nantucket whaling ship the Essex, which was stalked and ultimately destroyed by a sperm whale in 1820.
Stranded thousands of miles from home, the crew struggled to survive and were lost at see for three months, at one point they were reduced to cannibalism. Only eight were ultimately rescued. The incident was the inspiration for Herman Melville's "Moby Dick."
Chris Hemsworth is already attached to play the first mate Owen Chase who was supplanted as captain of the whaling ship by a better connected rival named George Pollard (Benjamin Walker). After the attack, he becomes the hero who leads some of them to safety.
Murphy will play Matthew Joy, the ship's second mate. Tom Holland also stars.
