With Christmas fast approaching I thought I would take in the role of the ever helpful happy elf and throw out some comic book gift ideas. It must be tough buying for us nerds, we can be a fussy bunch. I fortunately do not have any other nerds to buy for, I don’t envy the task at all. Does the comic book fan in your life read trade paperbacks, hardcovers or only omnibuses? I wouldn’t even being to contemplate getting into back issues unless I was well tuned in to a certain individuals wants and needs. Also what I wanted to do with this list was look at some alternatives to the usual books that are getting shouted out. There are debates all the time from comic book commentators saying the success of the movies is bringing more people to comics. I remain unconvinced by the the evidence...

Frank Miller returns to Batman’s dark future with Superman, Superboy, and Rafael Grampa.
DC’s Black Label is dropping a pretty big book in December: the latest in the series spawned from The Dark Knight Returns. This one is called The Golden Child, and the most shocking thing about it is probably its artist.
Rafael Grampa, the Eisner-winning Brazilian creator of 5 and Mesmo Delivery, takes the penciling duties for The Golden Child, while Frank Miller returns as writer. Grampa’s art style is like if you threw Sean Murphy, Paul Pope, and Frank Quitely in a blender. Spoilers: that’s real good. And he almost never does interiors!
The Golden Child is a 48-page one-shot, presumably oversized as the other Black Label books are. It picks up three years after the events of the last series. In that one, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Batwoman, and Lara...

The DC Universe is bringing out the dead. Meet the DC zombies in this exclusive first look at DCEased #1 from DC Comics.
DCeased feels long overdue. The global zombie phenomenon really took off almost ten years ago when The Walking Dead first aired, but it has been an ongoing comics concern for more than 15 years. The Walking Dead’s first issue came out in 2003 before kicking off a television phenomenon in 2010, and since then everyone from Marvel to Idw’s Hasbro licenses have done big zombie events. Marvel Zombies in particular holds up well to this day. Criminal's Sean Phillips on art with obvious choice writer Robert Kirkman unsurprisingly told very effective and horrifying zombie stories using popular superhero characters.
It looks like this unlikely trend will continue with DCeased. Goofy name aside, it looks like the book is going to work because it has some real...

Paul Pope, son of National Enquirer founder Generoso Pope Jr., says he will drop plans to purchase the tabloid from its current owner, American Media Inc., adding that it was his belief that the Enquirer was not salvageable.
“When I stepped back and did the 50,000 foot-view and I really analyzed this, I don’t think there is any way — even if they gave the paper away — I don’t think it can be resurrected,” Pope told TheWrap. “All businesses are cyclical and sadly this is the end of the cycle. It’s time to kiss it goodbye.”
Pope, a Florida-based author and philanthropist, said his initial urge to buy back the magazine had been a “knee-jerk” response on behalf of his family legacy, before he ultimately concluded that declining circulation and lack of a digital strategy made the prospect unworkable.

Does the National Enquirer have a future? As American Media Inc. looks for a buyer for the troubled supermarket tabloid, media experts offered sharply divergent assessments of whether the supermarket staple would ultimate be able to weather its current legal, financial and public relations troubles — and indeed if a buyer would emerge at all.
“I would rather pay money to someone to take it away from me, to save me from all the legal troubles,” Samir Husni, director of the Magazine Innovation Center at the University of Mississippi School of Journalism, told TheWrap. “I can list 100 reasons why nobody should buy the National Enquirer, but I cannot think of one reason why somebody should buy the National Enquirer.”
Peter Kreisky, a veteran media analyst, predicted that the tabloid was unlikely to survive another five years. “This is the beginning of the ultimate decline of it, unless somebody pulls a rabbit out of a hat,...

As you might be able to tell from the year in the post title, I’ve gotten more than a little lackadaisical about keeping up with this annual series of the best in comics created by North Americans. (I reviewed 2006 at the beginning of 2007, 2007 later in 2007, 2008 in 2008, 2009 in 2009, 2010 in 2011 after the next book was published, 2011 in 2012, 2012 in 2013, 2014 in 2014, and have so far missed 2015, 2016, and 2017. If it were still my job to keep up with things being published, I would probably be deeply ashamed of myself — but it hasn’t been for a decade now, so I’m not.)
But I’m still interested in good comics, as always. So here I finally am with the Jeff Smith-edited The Best American Comics 2013 , only four and a half years after it was published and six-and-a-half to seven-and-a-half years after the work in it originally appeared.

A couple months ago we learned that the classic John Carpenter film Big Trouble in Little China was getting a sequel in comic book form. That comic is called Big Trouble in Little China: Old Man Jack, and today we have a preview of the upcoming first issue!
The comic will tell the story of Jack Burton's "final ride in the Pork-Chop Express", which leads to the Hellpocalypse.
The year is 2020, and hell is literally on Earth. Ching Dai, sick of relying on screw-ups like Lo Pan to do his bidding, has broken the barriers between Earth and the infinite hells, and declared himself ruler of all.Sixty-year-old Jack Burton is alone in a tiny corner of Florida with only his broken radio to talk to, until one day it manages to pick up a message. Someone is out there in the hellscape, and they know a way to stop Ching Dai.

Is it just us, or is there an undeniable appeal to seeing futuristic takes on Batman? When phrasing it like that, you’re probably immediately picturing Terry McGinnis in your mind – which is perfectly okay because Batman Beyond is amazingly awesome – but we’re actually referring to those “what if?” type scenarios that depict a grizzled Dark Knight in his twilight years.
So, if you’re a fan of works such as Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns (and possibly its two sequels) or even Paul Pope’s Batman: Year 100, then you’re definitely going to want to pay attention because Sean Gordon Murphy has been cooking up something for a while now that sounds like it could be placed among that ilk.
Before we get ahead of ourselves, we’ll offer a gentle reminder that you’ll next see him visit Gotham City in a tale to be written by Scott Snyder, which, as we recently learned, will no longer be told within the confines of All-Star Batman, but rather, will be used as a launching point for some yet unnamed new initiative from DC.
Once that’s out of the way, we can expect to enjoy an eight-issue limited series written and illustrated by Murphy himself. Funnily enough, he referenced the aforementioned titles, according to Cbr:
“The Batman book I’m doing alone will be my ‘Dk’ and my ‘Year 100, an Elseworld-like take on Batman. My attempt at an opus.”
And although, he’ll be utilizing many of Batman‘s greatest villains, a recent Twitter teaser (seen at the top) promised a “Joker like you’ve never seen him” and, from the caption offered below, it sounds like we may see a different side to the Clown Prince of Crime.
A friend of mine has a crush on Joker, but she feels bad because he's evil. My Batman story makes it Ok to have a crush on Joker! pic.twitter.com/rcqTEZt1Po

Since 2010, Scott Snyder has continually amazed readers with various stories featuring the Dark Knight that have since been deemed modern classics, a few of which were The Black Mirror, The Court of Owls, Death of the Family and Endgame. Not only did each prove to be incredible reads, but they also generously added something significant to Batman’s enduring mythology.
So, when Snyder’s much lauded run on Batman with Greg Capullo ended, fans understandably panicked. Thankfully, the superstar scribe has continued on, only with various other top tier artists in tow in the pages of All-Star Batman. And like many of you out there, we can’t help but give the series top marks whether it be in periodicals or trade paperback.
But, as you know, all good things must come to an end at some point, and the plug is being pulled on this particular title with issue #14 this fall.

This week, we brought word that Dark Knight III: The Master Race would be undergoing a slight name change upon its release as a collected edition, effectively being rechristened as Batman: The Dark Knight: The Master Race. Well, it appears that trend will continue with a companion book set to arrive this September.
If you’ve been keeping up with the threequel to Frank Miller’s immortal classic The Dark Knight Returns – or at least news pertaining to it – you’re likely aware that this limited series has seen an obscene amount of variant covers, particularly for the first couple issues. Normally, stuff like this appears as supplemental material in the back of its relevant trade, but if that were the case with this story, the book would’ve been as thick as the Yellow Pages.
Knowing that, DC has opted to release a 176-page tome (I told you...

As many of you know Darwyn Cooke, beloved comic book industry icon, passed away Saturday May 14th after a battle with lung cancer. He was 53 years old. I could go into all of the facts, his accomplishments and merits in animation, illustration, and writing, but many of you already know them all or could easily gain access to them on the plethora of websites covering this tragedy. So in lieu of listing off his accomplishments, I’m going to talk about what Darwyn Cooke means to me.
My earliest memories of Darwyn Cooke’s work was from Marvel’s X-Statix. Peter Milligan, Mike and Laura Allred crafted an incredible pop art critique of the direction we were going in our fame obsessed culture using mutants as the metaphor of choice. One of the artists that also worked on this was Darwyn Cooke. My younger brother James was not quite a...

Boom! Studios is at the Emerald City Comicon today to announce a new comic called Kong of Skull Island, which will serve as a prequel to the classic film. At first, I thought we were looking at an adaptation or a tie-in to the new film from Jordan Vogt-Roberts, Kong: Skull Island, but this Boom! Studios comic is a totally different thing. James Asmus (All-New Inhumans) is the writer for the limited series, while Carlos Magno is going to be the artist. The first issue will have a number of alternate covers from guys like Eric Powell, Ryan Sook, Paul Pope, Nick Robles, and Felipe Massafera, whose art you can see below. The logline for the series is, “Two fractured and combative civilizations are forced to band together as they venture into Skull Island — their new home.” Setting stories on Skull Island seems like the best way to keep telling Kong stories,...

This past weekend was WonderCon out in La. DC made many announcements about it’s upcoming Rebirth, some of which we already had some idea about. Now we were given information on creative teams, like Scott Snyder heading up All-Star Batman with rotating artists including Sean Murphy and Paul Pope, and James Tynion IV taking the reigns on the soon to be back-numbered Detective Comics. One of the other Bat family announcements was that they will soon be revealing the Joker’s name.
Why?
The short answer is that Batman found out his name when he asked that question on the Möbius chair in Justice League #42 (42, the answer to the ultimate question of life. Coincidence?). The long answer is a combination of figuring out how to handle a decades old franchise coupled with changes in audience expectations.
Now, I know what you might be thinking. Don’t we already know the Joker’s name?...

Carver: A Paris Story #1
Written and drawn by Chris Hunt (Backup story by Paul Pope)
Published by Z2 Comics
With its sweeping black and white art and “man’s man” hero , Carver #1 by writer/artist Chris Hunt definitely wears its debt to Hugo Pratt’s Corto Maltese on its sleeve. However, its white hooded villain Stacker Lee seems like a rogue from the classic The Spirit comic strips, who happens to talk like a gangster from Tarantino film with his long, meandering monologues filled with pop philosophy. (If he’s not too old at the time, Samuel L. Jackson would be a perfect choice to play him in a Carver film.) These mix of influences, both European and American, collide in a simple, striking story about a supposed good man named Francis Carver, who has done some bad things and is willing to do anything to be with the woman he loves,...

Juan Navarro is an artist and co-founder of the small press indie comic book company Creature Entertainment located in Miami, Florida. He writes the supernatural crime drama Rez and draws the psychological horror story Tommy. He also runs his own website Fwacata and has his own webcomic The Zombie Years about a futuristic zombie apocalypse.
I first met Juan at Collective Con in Jacksonville, Florida. I bought both issues of Tommy, a psychological horror story about a child whose pet rabbit is a serial killer. I fell in love with Juan’s art style. It is in the same vein as Sam Keith and Skottie Young that combines a cartoonish style with dark grittiness. Think an unholy cross between Looney Tunes and Tales From The Crypt. Since then, I have followed Juan’s work and always look forward to hearing about the next project he is involved in.

This weekend, at East Coast Comicon, I got the chance to chat with writer Brandon Montclare (Fearsome Four) and artist Amy Reeder (Madame Xanadu) about their work, especially on their creator owned title Rocket Girl, which is published by Image Comics as well as sci-fi, action scenes, and much more. Rocket Girl is about a teen cop from the future named DaYoung Johansson, who travels back to 1980s New York to prevent an evil corporation from inventing technology to basically take over the world.
Sound on Sight: So why should readers pick up the second arc of Rocket Girl?
Amy Reeder: If you loved the first one, it’s so worth it to keep reading. We had originally planned to make our story five issues, but we were talking and realized that wasn’t enough time to tell this story. You have to develop the characters first so people can...

George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road looks so insane on so many awesome levels. It's easily one of my most anticipated films of the year, and it's going to give audiences one hell of an adrenaline rush punch to the face.
DC Comics' Vertigo has collaborated with Miller on developing a couple of books for fans to enjoy. There is a hardcover book called Mad Max: Fury Road: Inspired Artists, which will feature art by 65 famous artists that were influenced by the world of Mad Max. And there's a prequel comic that will focus on four of the characters from the upcoming film.
Thanks to /Film, we have the cover art from these publications to share with you. The one above and the one directly below are the front and back covers of Mad Max: Fury Road: Inspired Artists. The third is from the comic Mad Max: Fury Road...

Mph #3 Story by Mark Millar Art by Duncan Fegredo Cover by Duncan Fegredo, Paul Pope Publisher: Image Comics -
In case Mark Millar didn’t already have a tight grip on the nexus of Hollywood comic book films, his new five issue miniseries Mph is already getting its own movie – (and just one week after Fox bought the rights to Millar and Leinil Francis Yu’s Superior). Unfortunately this new series from the mastermind of Kick Ass elicits but a shrug. What seemed edgy and brash in the first issue is now routine and old-hat. In many ways, Mph zooms by exactly as you’d imagine: After escaping prison in the first issue when discovering a drug that grants super-speed, Roscoe heads out with an optimistic but dangerous outlook on life. Roscoe, his girl Rosa, and pals Chevy and Baseball mount a super-speed-fuelled crime spree, robbing over 40 banks and later...

Back in 2006 there was a Batman mini comic book series called Batman: Year 100 that featured a very unique style for the Dark Knight. It has been years since I've even thought about this comic, but thanks to Geek Draw, I was reminded of its awesomeness, and I wanted to share it. Maybe some of you have seen the comic, maybe you haven't. Either way, check out some of the amazing art created for it by Paul Pope. I'm kind of mad at myself for not remembering this comic run.
Visionary writer/artist Paul Pope presents a futuristic mystery of epic proportions set in a dark, dystopian world devoid of privacy and filled with government conspiracies, psychic police, holographic caller ID and absolutely no room for "secret identities."In Gotham City, 2039, a federal agent is murdered and a contingent of Washington's top agents is hot on the suspect's trail. The Batman,...

I believe a person has the right to commit suicide. No matter who says what, suicide might very well be our only inalienable right. Sixteen religious leaders, your entire family, all of your friends and all of your enemies can get together, kidnap you and hold an “intervention” (that’s sort of a pop-psych séance), and when all is said and done, you can still jump off a cliff.
But even I would admit that holding a suicide-themed contest is gauche. And, hey, I’m a punk rock fan.
Our friends over at DC Comics (who are now looking up “friend” in their online dictionaries) decided to run a new talent contest. According to their own web page ”Harley Quinn is no stranger to a little breaking and entering for a good time and now, she’s going to help one talented artist break into comics with DC Entertainment’s Open Talent Search.

Harley Quinn is no stranger to a little breaking and entering for a good time and now, she’s going to help one talented artist break into comics with DC Entertainment’s Open Talent Search. That’s right, we’re looking for someone to draw one page of Harley Quinn #0 alongside some of comic’s most amazing talents, including Amanda Conner, Paul Pope, Bruce Timm, and a few other surprises, maybe even you!! Beginning this November, Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner will be writing the madcap adventures of Harley Quinn and they’ll need all the help they can get to handle her, so they’re opening the invitation to one undiscovered talent to join them. If you think you’ve got what it takes to be published in this special issue, then put on your working hat and start drawing now, because an opportunity like this doesn’t come along very often.

First, the bad news: According to Diamond Distributors, Marvel and DC combine to dominate about two-thirds of the total comic book hardcopy sales.
And now, the good news: According to Diamond Distributors, Marvel and DC combined possess only about two-thirds of the total comic book hardcopy sales.
Everybody else shares in that last third: Diamond, Image, Dark Horse, Idw, Archie, Boom and about, I dunno, maybe three thousand others. But they’ve achieved something that a decade ago would have daunted Sisyphus. Even at one-third of the market, these folks have torn down the wall. It wasn’t that long ago when DC and Marvel enjoyed a duopoly in excess of 80% of the market.
The really cool thing about this news is that these “other” publishers have succeeded by doing the types of comics that The Huge Two haven’t done successfully in decades. Dynamite’s line of pulp and...

According to Robot 6 and a few other comic blogs Paul Pope pitched an all ages Kamandi series to DC. Upon hearing it, supposedly, DC responded “You think this is gonna be for kids? Stop, stop. We don’t publish comics for kids. We publish comics for 45-year olds. If you want to do comics for kids, you can do Scooby-Doo. Well, I don’t know how true that is, but it certainly brings a few thoughts to mind.
Let’s say that the statement was in fact true. We don’t actually know the context in which it was said. I’ll assume Pope can tell sarcasm apart from snark. So, if DC actually had the balls to be so rude to such a great talent, they’ll deserve the continued flack they seem to be gunning for on what feels like a daily basis. There’s so many things wrong with what they said…...
