Dozens of sound designers, engineers and mixers have signed a petition protesting the Academy’s decision to award the sound Oscar during its pre-telecast hour on Sunday.
A source close to the sound branch also revealed that guild members are planning on wearing their guild badges upside down as a form of silent protest over the demotion of crafts at the Oscars.
Karol Urban, President of the Cinema Audio Society confirmed the protest might go one step further. In a statement, Urban said, “This weekend, the Oscars may be turned upside down as we may see winners from all categories accept their Oscars upside down in a silent show of solidarity with the eight affected categories. We are all filmmakers of equal importance.”
More than 80 people, including 16 Academy Award winners, signed the letter to the Academy, which is posted in full below.

In “Nine Days,” out this Friday in theaters, Winston Duke plays Will, a man who spends his lonely days and nights monitoring the lives of humans on a wall of vintage TV sets inside his home.
Living in a remote desert, Will watches the lives of souls he has chosen to live on Earth, and when one dies, he has to find a new candidate to fill that vacancy.
At the center of the film, director Edson Oda builds Will’s eyes into the world through 30 televisions. “You’re not watching a show, you’re watching somebody’s perspective on the old-fashioned TV tube,” explains Mac Smith, supervising sound designer and sound editor explains.
It was up to Smith along with Brandon Proctor, re-recording mixer, to capture the sound of the environments for Oda. Sound varied from washing dishes to someone riding a bike to someone cooking dinner and listening to music – everyday sounds.

(Warning: This piece includes minor spoilers for “A Quiet Place — Part II”).
The opening shots of “A Quiet Place – Part II” do not immediately give away that we are witnessing the day the Abbott family was forced into silence by deadly creatures from another world. And that makes it all the more shocking when Lee Abbott’s truck arrives on a seemingly deserted street, the sound of its engine and the slam of its door echoing through the theater with an unnatural, ominous loudness.
It is the first of countless sounds developed by the film’s sound team, led by Ethan Van Der Ryn and Erik Aadahl, who earned acclaim with the original 2018 film for turning even the simplest of sounds – crows flying or a glass bottle breaking – into potential triggers for another heart-pounding alien attack.

While Marvel’s “Black Panther” exceeded expectations by leading the Oscar crafts races with six nominations, a testament to the global impact of Ryan Coogler’s zeitgeist-changing, superhero phenomenon, Damien Chazelle’s “First Man” underperformed by receiving only four nods. This definitely changed the dynamics, resulting in several surprises and snubs.
Most shocking was the snubbing of team Chazelle’s Oscar-winning cinematographer Linus Sandgren, editor Tom Cross, and composer Justin Hurwitz. This came out of nowhere, since Sandgren and Cross were both nominated by their respective craft organizations, the Asc and Ace, and Hurwitz won the Golden Globe for his trippy score.

Will the highest grossing film of the year “Black Panther” score a Best Picture nomination? It’s a fair question as no Marvel film has ever even been in the conversation. And the question has produced so much turmoil the academy temporarily thought of adding a Best Popular Film category. We should look towards another popular origin story that was not your typical Oscar fare — 1977’s “Star Wars: IV A New Hope” — as our guide towards “Black Panther’s” potential Oscar nomination haul.
George Lucas’s original “Star Wars” spawned a franchise that includes seven prequels and sequels and two spinoffs to date. Luke Skywalker’s origin story maybe outside the Oscars comfort zone but that didn’t stop the film from picking up 10 nominations including Best Picture; Best Director (Lucas); Best Original Screenplay (Lucas); and Best Supporting Actor (Alec Guinness).
It won six below-the line races: Best Film Editing...

With more than $1.3 billion at the global box office, “Black Panther” was one of the year’s biggest hits. Though some people expected just another superhero film, the project turned out to be much deeper and more complex than that. Many called it a social turning point because it was the first blockbuster with a mostly black cast. And below the line, the film’s three top department heads were women. Director and co-scripter Ryan Coogler talked about his team and the challenges members faced in preparing the critically acclaimed movie.

Never underestimate the gravity of sound. In “A Quiet Place” — from John Krasinski, who co-wrote the script, directed and stars alongside his wife, Emily Blunt — looming monsters hunt by noise, going after their prey when they hear its sound. For the farm-living Abbott family, silence is the only means of survival.
This means two-time Oscar-nominated supervising sound editors Erik Aadahl and Ethan Van der Ryn had to shape an atmosphere with maximum auditory impact. “We knew it would be a huge challenge creating this world of quiet,” Aadahl says. “It’s actually as hard if not harder than making a movie full of sound. You’re naked in a way, and everything has to be delicately balanced and perfect.”
Perspective, or what the sound team called “sonic envelopes,” played a key part in ratcheting up tension, particularly from the point of view of the daughter, who is deaf. By harnessing her inability to hear,...

Independent artists Kris Bowers, Germaine Franco, Danielle Eva Schwob and Jeremy Turner are among the select few for this summer’s Music and Sound Design Labs held at Skywalker Ranch in northern California.
This is the third year that Skywalker Ranch will host the Music and Sound Design Labs, a joint initiative between the Sundance Institute’s Film Music Program and Feature Film and the Film Music Program and Documentary Film Program.
The Music and Sound Design Labs provide workshops and creative exercises for composers, directors and sound designers to collaborate on the process of designing a soundtrack for film.
“This year’s fellows include an outstanding group of composers whose work will deepen and enrich the experience of the diverse personal stories being told by these fiction and documentary filmmakers,” said Sundance Institute Film Music Program director Peter Golub.

Hollywood’s sound pros nominated Birdman and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes for three awards apiece as the Motion Picture Sound Editors unveiled nods for its 62nd Mpse Golden Reel Awards, honoring the best feature film, television, animation and computer entertainment work of the year.
“2014 was a fantastic year for sound,” said Mpse president Frank Morrone. “The advent of new distribution channels, streaming services and gaming platforms is creating additional opportunities for sound artists to practice their craft beyond the traditional venues of film and television. This year’s nominations reflect that change, spanning an amazing diversity of mediums and genres, all executed at the highest level of creativity. Complaints about the sound mix on Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar” clearly didn’t have much influence on the members of the Cinema Audio Society, who on Tuesday made the film one of the five nominees for the best feature-film sound mix of 2014.
“Interstellar” joined “American Sniper,” “Birdman,” “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Unbroken” in receiving nominations for the 2014 Cas Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing, which will be presented on Feb. 14 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel.

Nominations have been announced for the 51st annual Cinema Audio Society Awards, and as ever with this group lately, there are a few surprises. For instance, "Unbroken" made the cut despite being mostly ignored by the guilds and industry groups so far, and Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" showed up as well. The biggest jaw-dropper might just be that after months of being the poster child for sound complaints, somehow, some way, "Interstellar" ended up in the mix (no pun intended). There are always one or two that drop out, however. Last year, for example, another Marvel movie — "Iron Man 3" — was chalked up here. But it fell out in favor of "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" with the Academy. I find myself wondering if "The Battle of the Five Armies" could make the cut this year as it's even more of an action/sound film than the last.

"All is Lost" is nothing if not a showcase for post-production sound. Bereft of dialogue, a story told virtually through score and sound effects editing, it would be a dream project for any sound editor. And so it was for Oscar nominees Richard Hymns and Steve Boeddeker. But the film's post-production fate was in flux for a time as affordability was a huge consideration for the indie production. It finally did make its way to the halls of Skywalker Sound, however (where it was known affectionately as "Bob on a Boat"), and Hymns actually came to it first through his wife, who had worked for star Robert Redford's company for 10 years before they married. At a reception, the actor "was talking about this film he'd just finished and it was set on a boat with no dialogue," Hymns recalls. "As a sound editor, I'm salivating. And I love sailing.

Last night the 2014 BAFTA Awards took place, hosted by Stephen Fry from London's Royal Opera House and it was 12 Years a Slave taking Best Film and Best Actor for Chiwetel Ejiofor while Gravity was honored for Outstanding British Film and Alfonso Cuaron was named Best Director. Interestingly enough, 12 Years a Slave only won the two awards while Gravity was the night's biggest winner taking home an additional four awards in technical categories, including Score (Steven Price) and Cinematography (Emmanuel Lubezki). It's interesting to see a list of winners where Dallas Buyers Club wasn't nominated for a single award considering its two main characters played by Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto are, more or less, considered locks to win Best Actor and Supporting Actor. As for the BAFTA Awards, it was Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips) taking Best Supporting Actor and while Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) added another Best Actress award to...

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has announced the nominations for the British Academy Film Awards and Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" led the pack with 11 nominations including Best Film, British Film (who knew "Gravity" was a British movie?), Director for Cuaron, Screenplay for Cuaron and his son Jonas, and Actress for Sandra Bullock.
The biggest snub in my humble opinion was "Dallas Buyers Club" which appeared nowhere on the nominations list. Apparently, the British Academy did not deem Matthew McConaughey or Jared Leto award-worthy!
The BAFTA Awards will take place on Feb. 16 at the Royal Opera house in London. Will "Gravity" emerge as the victorious movie that night? And by the way, "Gravity" was my No. 1 favorite film of 2013!

Early this morning saw the announcement of the nominations for the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) awards for 2013. For the most part, they look like all of the other guild nominations we’ve seen over the past month or so (including all five director nominees who were just nominated for the DGA’s top award), but there are a few interesting differences to take note of.
First off, Philomena has a much stronger presence here, but given that it is a British film, it’s hardly surprising. You may also notice a lot of love for Behind the Candelabra, a film that was only shown on TV in the States, making it ineligible for theatrical awards.
However, aside from that, just about all the major players are here. Gravity leads the pack with 11 nominations, including Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Director, and Best Actress. 12 Years a...

BAFTA Awards 2014: ‘American Hustle,’ ‘Gravity,’ and ’12 Years a Slave’ tops (photo: BAFTA 2014 nominees Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence in ‘American Hustle’) Nominations for the 2014 BAFTA Awards were announced a little while ago. 12 Years a Slave continues to be the leader in the clubhouse when it comes to nominations.
