For 37 seasons and counting, MTV’s “The Challenge” — formerly known as “Real World/Road Rules Challenge” — has been one of the most consistent reality competition shows on all of TV. It is full of complicated physical challenges, of course, but it also comes with plenty of interpersonal drama between players.
Ahead of the show’s 500th episode, Variety ranks the Top 20 seasons so far, plus looks back at the show that started it all.
Honorable Mention: Road Rules: All Stars
Season 1 (1998)
This was where it all began. If not for “Road Rules’s” adventure spin on MTV’s reality TV format, there would be would be no “Challenge.” “Road Rules: All Stars” placed five “Real World” alums into a “Road Rules” format — traveling in a Winnebago — and sent them off on assignments in the United States and New Zealand. When seven strangers are picked to live in the "Real World" house, one of them might end up behind bars 19 years later.
TMZ reported that "Real World" star Puck, whose real name is David Rainey, was arrested on July 13 and charged with "inflicting bodily injury on a woman."
TMZ reported that she may have been a spouse or girlfriend, and when Puck tried to stop her from calling the police, he was charged with trying to prevent her from reporting the incident.
This is not Puck's first run-in with the law for domestic violence. In 2011, he was cuffed and in 2012 he went to prison for stalking.
Puck appeared on "Real World: San Francisco" in 1994 and is best remembered for using his booger-picking finger to eat peanut butter out of a jar.

Everything that is wrong with reality television in general and The Glass House in particular can be summed up in one word: Alex.
From the moment he appeared on our screens, it was apparent that Alex — a 25-year-old from Dallas whose ABC bio indicates that he’s a bail bondsman with a penchant for “free-style rapping” — was after one thing and one thing only: fame. Now, it can certainly be said that anyone agreeing to go on a reality show is looking for their 15 minutes, but Alex and his ilk are people who grew up in what I like to call the A.P. era.
I believe that whether folks like Alex realize it or not, they owe their particular style of attention-getting to The Real World’s Puck.
For the uninitiated, Puck was a young man named David Rainey who was featured during The Real World’s 1994 San Francisco-set...

"It turns out, by the way, that oil rigs today generally don’t cause spills. They are technologically very advanced." That's not a joke--President Obama actually said that on April 2, soon after he announced a plan to expand offshore oil and gas exploration. What a difference a few weeks makes. In a nutshell: Bp's Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded; approximately 210,000 gallons of oil are now seeping into the Gulf of Mexico daily; animals, wetlands, fisheries, and local tourism industries are all threatened; and now Gov. Charlie Crist has declared a state of emergency. The spill has also officially reached the Louisiana coast--and it smells. And now, exactly one week after politicians confidently assured us that the spill won't affect drilling plans, Obama has declared a moratorium on new drilling until the government figures out why Deepwater Horizon exploded.

Does this disaster mean long-term problems for offshore drilling?
Environmental groups certainly hope so.
