After taking the temperature on how labor talks were going with Teamsters’ Lindsay Dougherty, Deadline Strike Talk podcast co-hosts Billy Ray and Todd Garner get into things this week with Mike Miller, the VP and Director of Motion Pictures for IATSE.
Miller sounds some encouraging notes here. Acknowledging that his members and everyone else has been beaten up by the six-month shutdown of last year coming on the heels of the pandemic, he has found those on the other side of the table to be putting across a better vibe than in past negotiations. He believes his membership is concerned with job security and stability, as well as economic and physical health. But he makes it clear that that is no sign of weakness. IATSE members have no shortage of resolve toward getting a fair deal.
As was anticipated, all 13 West Coast Studio Locals have now reached tentative agreements with the AMPTP.

They’re baaack. We retired Strike Talk, the Deadline podcast by Billy Ray and Todd Garner Deadline hatched to lend perspective and serve as a beacon of hope to the industry during the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. We’ve put the band back together because a potential standoff between the signatories and the negotiators for the Teamster and IATSE guilds looms just up the road when their contracts expire July 31. Are the signatories going to repeat last year’s failed strategy of keeping the CEOs out of the room until too late to stop another disastrous Hollywood shut down? Ray and Garner pose that question to Lindsay Dougherty, who’s leading the negotiation for the Teamsters, and who here reveals she has not had even a passing chat with any of the CEOs that finally solved the last round of labor strife. Dougherty figured into the last strike when...

Aquaman’s mom Nicole Kidman is a superhero of cinemas, thanks to her enduringly viral AMC ads.
The Oscar winner starred in an infamous 2021 campaign for the largest U.S. theater chain — new versions of the ad are currently rolling out. In a recent cover story for Elle, Kidman spoke about her newfound commercial calling as a way to save theaters from extinction.
“It was just the desire to keep cinemas alive,” Kidman said. “I’ve had the best experiences in cinema. I’d pretend I was going to school; I’d forge a note, and I’d go and sit in a movie theater. That’s a safe haven for me, so the idea of those not existing — that’s just not part of the equation in my lifetime.”
Kidman continued, “If that’s what it takes, I’ll do whatever it takes. We have to have some more ideas for the next one.

Ben Affleck’s Only Horror Movie Was So Bad It Couldn’t Even Earn More Than $10 Million at Box Office
Ben Affleck’s done a lot in Hollywood, you know? He’s been in all sorts of movies, from those big action flicks to the tear-jerker dramas. But when the 51-year-old dipped his toes into horror with Phantoms back in ’98, it didn’t quite hit the mark.
Ben Affleck in Justice League
The movie just couldn’t grab people’s attention, making less than 10 million bucks at the box office. Even though it had a cool idea and Affleck’s star power, Phantoms just didn’t live up to the hype, ending up as one of those forgettable horror flicks. It’s kinda curious why folks didn’t vibe with it and what it says about the actor’s career in movies.
Ben Affleck’s Sole Horror Movie Outing Was a Complete Flop
Ben Affleck tried his hand at horror, and let’s just say it didn’t end well.

Miley Cyrus’ mother Tish, 56, reportedly “stole” her daughter Noah‘s boyfriend, Prison Break star Dominic Purcell, when she fell in love with him and tied the knot in August 2023.
Tish revealed that Dominic, 54, had reached out to her on Instagram in 2016, but she chose not to respond at that time. In 2022, after Tish’s divorce from Billy Ray Cyrus, Dominic reestablished contact.
However, several outlets have claimed that Noah, 24, had been involved with Dominic before Tish’s romantic involvement. Noah is reportedly distraught over Tish “stealing” Dominic from her.
Noah, understandably distraught, was not invited to attend her mother’s wedding and appeared to align herself with Billy Ray in the divorce proceedings.
The situation escalated to the point where Miley reportedly hired armed guards to ensure a peaceful ceremony, as a potential disturbance from Noah was anticipated.

AMC lost money in the final quarter of 2023, though not as much as Wall Street anticipated — thank goodness for Taylor Swift! Still, time to break glass and bring back Nicole Kidman.
The AMC Theatres “We Make Movies Better” ad campaign first launched in the fall of 2021. Unlike nearly every other commercial ever, Kidman’s went viral. They came to YouTube for magic.
On Wednesday, February 28, AMC Entertainment chief Adam Aron said three “30-second versions of the highly acclaimed original pre-show advertisement will make their theatrical debut” in March. The first version begins on Friday, March 1, he continued, adding that AMC “will rotate in a few new versions in the coming months on a rotating basis.”
So these aren’t really new spots, just new versions of the original one. The “We Make Movies Better” theme remains, as does the point: AMC Theatres has the best tech and amenities.

The next film to be directed by Ben Affleck, the crime thriller Animals, could be about to star Jennifer Garner as well as Matt Damon.
Having released the Nike-makes-a-shoe drama Air last year, Ben Affleck is set to embark on his next directing project. He’s busy setting up Animals, a crime drama in which Matt Damon will star as a mayoral candidate whose son is kidnapped.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jennifer Garner is in talks to play Damon’s wife in the film. As previously reported, the otherwise undisclosed plot will contain plenty of intrigue – and perhaps a bit of violence: “Surrounded by plenty of enemies, political and otherwise, the husband and wife have no choice but to get their hands dirty in order to save their son,” is how THR describes it.
Over his career as a director, Affleck has tended to gravitate to crime thrillers of one sort or another.

Tish Cyrus is looking back at Hannah Montana, the show that launched her daughter Miley Cyrus’ career as well as helped her then-husband Billy Ray Cyrus rise to a new level of fame.
During a recent interview on Call Her Daddy with her oldest daughter, Brandi Cyrus, Tish opened up about how the popular Disney Channel series, which ran from 2006 to 2011, impacted their family. On the show, Miley starred as Miley Stewart, a teen with a secret pop star persona, alongside her dad Billy Ray, who played her onscreen father Robby Ray Stewart.
Tish said the show “became its own phenomenon,” which they were not expecting once it initially premiered. Brandi added, “Hannah Montana was just different. And I don’t think anyone could’ve ever anticipated it or thought how big it would be.”

During her acceptance speech for best record of the year at the 2024 Grammys for “Flowers,” Miley Cyrus made sure to thank her mom, Tish, and half-sister, Brandi, who attended the ceremony with her, noticeably omitting her other sister, Noah, and father, Billy Ray Cyrus. Cyrus ended her speech by saying, “I don’t think I forgot anyone, but I might have forgotten underwear.”
The moment suggests a possible estrangement between the “Achy Breaky Heart” singer and his daughter, which fans of the crooner have picked up on since the awards show moment. Cyrus, who turned heads in a naked dress made of 14,000 gold safety pins, won her first-ever Grammy earlier that night for best pop solo performance, also for “Flowers.”

On Sunday night, Miley Cyrus won her first-ever Grammy Award for her song “Flowers.”
Presented by fellow singer Mariah Carey, Cyrus won for Best Pop Solo Performance.
“This M.C. is going to stand by this M.C. for this because this is just too iconic,” Cyrus said in her speech, referencing her and Carey’s shared initials.
Cyrus also mentioned how she was seated in her “lucky number three seat.” She continued the speech by telling a story to “sum up this moment.”
“There was a little boy that all he wanted for his birthday was a butterfly. So, his parents gave him a butterfly net and he was so excited, he just went outside out in the sun and started swinging and swinging. But with no luck, he sat down on the ground, he finally let go and he surrendered, and he was okay that he wasn’t going to capture this beautiful butterfly.

The boys are back: Ben Affleck is directing Animals, starring Matt Damon. Written by Colin McIntyre and Billy Ray, the brand-new thrilleris coming soon to Netflix.
This marks only the second time Damon has appeared in a film directed by Affleck: In 2023’s Air, Damon played Nike talent scout Sonny Vaccaro, who lands Michael Jordan for a groundbreaking sponsorship deal.
Still, the longtime friends have a history of collaboration. In 1997, Damon and Affleck co-starred in and co-wrote Good Will Hunting; their screenplay went on to win the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Since then, the duo have made several brief appearances together (usually in pal Kevin Smith’s films) but largely flourished in parallel blockbuster careers. That is, until a recent on-screen reunion in 2021’s The Last Duel.
In an interview with Chris Wallace, Damon explained why you can expect to see a lot more of the two actors...

The moviemaking business is alive and well, and somehow giving several talents the greenlight in a 24-hour span. Ranked in order of interest, from best to good-enough:
The Hollywood Reporter reports (from Hollywood) that Lily Gladstone and Martin Scorsese will reunite via Charlie Kaufman: the latter has written The Memory Police, an adaptation of Yoko Ogawa’s acclaimed sci-fi novel which the Best Actress nominee will lead and Scorsese is executive-producing. Reed Morano (I Think We’re Alone Now) is taking directing duties on the film, somehow both Kafkaesque and Orwellian, as the official synopsis suggests:
On an unnamed island, objects are disappearing: first hats, then ribbons, birds, roses. . . . Most of the inhabitants are oblivious to these changes, while those few able to recall the lost objects live in fear of the draconian Memory Police, who are committed to ensuring that what has disappeared remains forgotten. In a devastating (but perhaps none too surprising) blow to Dad Cinema enthusiasts the world over, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's acclaimed true-story Nike drama "Air" was completely ignored by the Academy when Oscar nominations were announced earlier this week. However, if you were expecting the Oscar-winning duo/best buds to spend the immediate future licking their wounds and wallowing in self-pity, guess again. According to The Hollywood Reporter, they've instead gone and lined up their next project together -- an original crime thriller titled "Animals," which now has Netflix backing it.
Having previously gone under working titles like "The Animals of Los Angeles" and "Be Gentlemen," the new Affleck-Damon joint will see Damon starring and Affleck directing from a script by Connor McIntyre with revisions from "Shattered Glass" and "Captain Phillips" scribe Billy Ray. The plot involves (per THR) "a mayoral candidate and his wife whose son is kidnapped.

The Dream Team is back! Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are teaming up again for Animals, a kidnapping thriller for Netflix. Affleck will direct Animals from a script written by Connor McIntyre with revisions by Billy Ray. In addition to his directorial duties, Affleck will produce alongside Damon, Dani Bernfeld of Artists Equity, Brad Weston, and Collin Creighton of MakeReady, who set the project up with Fifth Season.

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are teaming up once again for “Animals,” a new crime thriller that Netflix has just acquired. Affleck will direct, with Damon starring, from a script by Connor McIntyre and Billy Ray.
Affleck will remain behind the camera for “Animals” — unlike his previous collaboration with Damon, Amazon Studios’ “Air,” in which Damon starred as Nike executive Sonny Vaccaro opposite Affleck in a supporting role as Nike founder Phil Knight. Plot details are scarce for “Animals,” but the story will focus on a kidnapping.
Affleck and Damon famously became friends in high school and collaborated as screenwriters for the 1997 indie sensation “Good Will Hunting,” which won them an Oscar for best original screenplay.

After launching the Strike Talk podcast with producer Todd Garner to give WGA strikers comfort in the early days of 2023’s labor unrest, Billy Ray is signing off. When you are an Oscar-nominated screenwriter, and a director and producer to boot, you’ve got to go back to work at some point. No one expected it to go 30 weeks, but Ray threw himself into each installment, from landing guests who demystified the process, and down to its editing. It’s as if he was making a weekly series episode or a movie. It was all for his love for fellow practitioners of the writing craft, and his need to sound an alarm on how a failed negotiation over wages, AI and the shrinking of writer rooms would endanger an ecosystem that has fueled brilliant writing on series and films for decades. For a Friday that is time for reflection and giving thanks, host Billy Ray and returning original host Todd Garner welcomes WGA president Meredith Stiehm and SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher. They talk with the guys about the lessons learned from the long and brutal six month strike that is finally and mercifully over. The guild leaders advise IATSE and Teamsters negotiators what to expect when their deals expire next July. They also review a negotiation that in their minds never had to turn into such a protracted process. The gains made by their guilds could have been achieved if only the signatories had sent in the CEOs earlier to the bargaining table, and stopped trying to work from a contract and negotiating moves that were hopelessly outdated in the streaming age. Coming in for particular criticism here is AMPTP negotiator Carol Lombardini. After Billy Ray recalled watching Lombardini cancel catering...

Deadline Strike Talk is taking off today, for the first time in 28 weeks. Filmmaker Billy Ray will reunite with producer Todd Garner for the 29th and final installment of a program that each week covered the painful clashes between the signatories and the WGA and SAG-AFTRA with an insight honed by Ray’s experience as a member of the negotiating committee on the WGA team through several contract negotiations. So the good news is that the half year double strike that ground Hollywood to a halt is over. The bad news is Billy Ray has just about come to the end of the road on Deadline Strike Talk, which to our mind has been superb and a light in the darkness. He will do one more episode or two to wrap up the lessons we hopefully learned from this labor discord, and then we will beg him to keep a podcast presence with Deadline. In sober and intelligent tones, and with a superb roster of guests, he has helped create an understanding of the intricacies, forces and history that went into the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The hope is he, and his initial co-pilot Todd Garner, will want to continue together or separately an inside baseball dialogue with the industry that Deadline serves. That is a conversation for another day.

In his 27th installment of Deadline Strike Talk, Billy Ray leans into the need for labor and studios to realize they must be partners willing to compromise, for this business to get past the strikes and rebound in the coming years. To illustrate the need to be changeable, Ray harkens back to his own 2003 directorial debut, Shattered Glass. He catches up with three vital collaborators who made invaluable contributions to the celebrated film — Mandy Walker, Jeff Ford, and Adam Merims — to discuss what has happened to our business since.

In the 26th episode of Deadline Strike Talk — which for below the liners signifies half a year without a paycheck that hasn’t come from Uber fares or waiting tables — host Billy Ray hits on a zeitgeist theme that gets voiced a lot by people who just feel that the business isn’t as remotely as exciting or near as much fun as it was before the folly that signatories put themselves into by chasing Netflix as it became the preeminent streamer. The result has put just about every other streamer pursuit in a position of being money losers that have strained the economics, and accelerated the demise of those conglomerates’ traditional networks, and so many other things.
Ray begins by addressing the fear that informs so many moves in Hollywood, and is anathema to great creative work. Joining him are two Hollywood veterans, John Ptak and Marc Evans. While they flourished in different areas,...

Week 25 of Deadline’s Strike Talk podcast comes amid a tough time on the negotiations front between SAG-AFTRA and the studios. No formal talks have taken place or have even been scheduled since October 11, when bargaining was suspended amid the latest impasse.
The stalemate led to a group of A-list actors including George Clooney, Emma Stone, Ben Affleck, Tyler Perry and Scarlett Johansson offering to break the stalemate with a plan that would see Hollywood’s biggest earners defraying the costs to AMPTP signatories by eliminating the cap on membership dues, to be used to bolster health benefits and other areas that SAG-AFTRA is trying to shore up. The union has since said the offer was appreciated but not feasible.
Amid all this, Strike Talk host Billy Ray is joined this week by Steve Schmidt, founder of The Warning newsletter, YouTube channel and podcast, and a political commentator and strategist.
