If necessity is the mother of invention, as the saying goes, then Roger Corman is the dad of opportunity; swooping in and throwing around minimal coin but expecting maximum return (or at the very least, something in focus). But the King of the B’s has always attracted the hungry and talented, and so it was when a youngster by the name of Francis Ford Coppola was afforded the chance to helm his first (soft core flicks aside) official feature, Dementia 13 (1963). Part Psycho, part semi-Gothic psychodrama, it served as a stepping stone between Hitchcock and Bava, eventually leading to a slasher formula that is still impossible to kill.
Released by American International Pictures in late September on a double bill with Corman’s X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes (which I’ve Dusted Off here), Dementia 13 impressed some critics upon release, at least more so than what...

On Friday night, over a 100 protesters gathered outside the National Rifle Association’s headquarters in Virginia at a vigil for the 17 people who died following Wednesday’s school shooting in Parkland, Florida.
The shooting occurred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School after a 19-year-old alleged gunman, armed with what police say was a military-style semi-automatic rifle and countless magazines.
The suspect, Nikolas Cruz, is in custody and is being held without bond. He has been charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder, and has not yet entered a plea.
According to News 7 Boston, the protesters joined together to remember the victims...

It's easy to imagine that, 15 years from now, television audiences will take for granted the existence of groundbreaking series like Orange Is the New Black and Transparent. But it's impossible to look at the currently lush television landscape without acknowledging the debt that most popular shows owe to HBO at the turn of the new millennium.
While network television continued raking in the advertising dollars with surefire bets and lowest-common denominators, the premium cable channel was kickstarting its own quiet revolution, finding success in a variety of genres from pop-cultural...

This post contains potential spoilers for the plot of Guardians of the Galaxy.
In Guardians of the Galaxy, Rocket is a wise-cracking, raccoon-like creature voiced by Bradley Cooper. If Rocket is a departure from the typical caped superhero, he’s not the first anthropomorphic Marvel comic-book character to have his moment on the big screen. Back in 1986, Howard the Duck starred in a notorious bomb, produced by George Lucas, that made the once-cool character a pathetic punchline. He’s been missing from the movies ever since.
But according to StitchKingdom.com, Howard is getting a second chance—from the Guardians themselves.

Sir Anthony Hopkins.
When I was asked by Venice Magazine to interview Anthony Hopkins in September of 2002, then-as-now he was regarded as perhaps the greatest living actor in the English-speaking world. That said, I wasn't sure what, or whom, to expect. Hopkins was known for having a somewhat mercurial personality, as well as not being a man to suffer fools gladly. Fortunately, I found him to be a very friendly, open and erudite gent with a remarkably diffuse and quite brilliant mind. Below, when Hopkins starts talking about his experience on Richard Attenborough's film Magic, notice how the conversation shifts suddenly to the Bee Gees, John Travolta and Saturday Night Fever, then effortlessly back to the topic at hand. This was my impression of Anthony Hopkins throughout our talk: insatiably curious about everything, even his memories, and able to mentally multi-task with an ease that was quite breathtaking.

James Cameron's Avatar from 20th Century Fox hits theaters this December premiering some new 3D technology.
{sidebar id=1}The 3 page Times Article is located here and includes an interesting update at the end.
The original version of this story misstated the cost of the film Avatar as being in excess of $300 million. The correct figure is in excess of $200 million.
Several sites and blogs have jumped all over the original admission of Avatar'S budget set at over $300 million and now the Times have gone an corrected the amount...studio pressure? Was it really a mistake? I wouldn't doubt the $300 million + estimate with over 1,000 people working on it. We will probably never know as movie budgets are rarely ever truly revealed.
Head over to the original Times article, it has a lot of good stuff from Steven Spielberg, Peter Read more...
