2023 marked the 35th anniversary of the release of the 1988 film Pumpkinhead (watch it Here), which was the feature directorial debut of legendary special effects artist Stan Winston. An image of the figure can be seen at the bottom of this article, and more can be found on the Trick or Treat Studios website, where the figure is available for pre-order. Ghoulies is not the Gremlins rip-off its reputation suggests. The two films were in production at the same time, but budgetary issues delayed the release of Ghoulies. Although it likely benefited from Gremlins‘ success, the similarities begin and end with diminutive monsters. Ghoulies II actually shares more in common with Gremlins, as the first Ghoulies leans more — arguably too much — into the fantasy realm.
From producer Charles Band’s Empire Pictures, the 1985 horror-comedy is directed by Luca Bercovici (Rockula) from a script he co-wrote with producer Jefery Levy. At just over 80 minutes, the film doesn’t waste time trying to make sense of its messy plot.
When Jonathan Graves (Peter Liapis) inherits an old manor from the father he never knew, he does what any 20-something with newfound freedom would do: throw a party. Something wills Jonathan to perform a ritual from an old book he finds among his father’s occult paraphernalia,...

A few years ago, Scream Factory gave the 1988 film Pumpkinhead (watch it Here) a special edition Blu-ray release, including a limited edition steelbook. Now they’re gearing up to bring Pumpkinhead to 4K on October 10th, and a standalone 4K and Blu-ray combo pack is available for pre-order from the Scream Factory website. If you want to go a bit fancier, there’s also a collector’s edition with a poster, prism sticker, lobby cards, and enamel pins that can be purchased through the Scream Factory website. Scream Factory is also teaming up with Best Buy for a Best Buy exclusive steelbook of the 4K release, and that can be pre-ordered on the Best Buy website.

With Halloween less than two weeks away, we’ve got another batch of horror and sci-fi home media releases coming home this week that would make for some perfect seasonal viewings this month. Burt Gummer returns this Tuesday in Tremors: Shrieker Island, and if you’re a big fan of horror anthologies, you’ll definitely want to pick up Scare Package as well. Haunt, from Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, is getting a two-disc Collector’s Edition this week, the second season of NOS4A2 heads home on both Blu-ray and DVD, and Scream Factory is giving Stan Winston’s Pumpkinhead the Steelbook treatment on Tuesday, too.
Other releases for October 20th include a new release of The Haunting (1999), Killdozer, Amulet, The Ape, Chop Chop, the Tremors: 7-Movie Collection, The Owners, Picture Mommy Dead, No Escape, and the Back to the Future: The Ultimate Trilogy in 4K.

Ghoulies
Stars: Peter Liapis, Lisa Pelikan, Michael Des Barres, Jack Nance, Mariska Hargitay, Scott Thomson, Ralph Seymour | Written by Luca Bercovici, Jefery Levy | Directed by Luca Bercovici
Ghoulies 2
Stars: Damon Martin, Royal Dano, Phil Fondacaro, J. Downing, Kerry Remsen, Donnie Jeffcoat, Dale Wyatt | Written by Charlie Dolan, Dennis Paoli, Luca Bercovici | Directed by Albert Band
For my film-loving friends and I, Ghoulies and its immediate sequel were almost rites of passage growing up – I distinctly remember renting them from not only the local video shop but also that strange guy that used to park on the street corner renting tapes out of his boot (or, if he was more successful, the back of a transit van). You know the one, he’d have the craziest VHS tapes you’d ever seen – Class of Nuke Em High, Black Roses, The Toxic Avenger, Ghoulies… all films that sold themselves on artwork alone.

It’s impossible for me to hide the fact that Scream Factory is one of my favorite boutique media labels. As far as content goes, they give me the type of films that I really want to see on the Blu-ray format. They’ve had a strong first couple of years, and I see no signs of them slowing down anytime soon. Two of the biggest… neigh, The two biggest releases of the 2014 Halloween Seasons is coming from these guys. I’m speaking, of course, about the Director’s Cut of Nightbreed, as well as the Complete Halloween Collection. But you’ve already heard about those, and pre-ordered them, right? Well, here is their entire fall(Sept/Oct… And some November, cause shut up.) lineup, in case a few have slipped by you.

Sometimes, I’ll revisit a film that I loved when I was younger, and find that it has not held up at all. On the flip side, often times I’ll find myself enjoying films much more, that I thought were a little overrated in my younger years. Pumpkinhead is one such film. It’s not that I hated it, I liked it for what it was. I can’t even really put into words what kept me from loving it as much as everybody else. I think maybe it was the Appalachian setting. It felt to me – young me – that it added a layer of cheese to an otherwise serious film. Knowing that, I didn’t revisit Pumpkinhead all that often. I had a couple of different DVD releases, but I’d say I’ve seen it five times total, and most of those were instances of sharing the...
