What Do We Know About Dune Prophecy? More than you may think. With the second part of Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic science fiction novel a critical and box office success, it is going to be several years before we see the next feature film in the series, Dune Messiah. Luckily, production on the small-screen prequel /spin-off was concurrent with Dune: Part Two which means before the end of the year we are going to return to the fictional realms of Arrakis, Geidi Prime, and more via Max.
While not much in the way of footage has made its way online, there have been quite a few reveals about Dune Prophecy, so let’s jump in and discuss.

The “Dune” universe is expanding to TV, and going way, way back in time to do it.
During Warner Bros.’ Upfront presentation on Wednesday, HBO and Max boss Casey Bloys introduced the first teaser for “Dune: Prophecy,” a prequel series spinoff of the hit sci-fi film franchise. The six-episode season will premiere on Max this fall.
“Dune: Prophecy” is inspired by the novel “Sisterhood of Dune” by Brian Herbert (son of original “Dune” series author Frank Herbert) and Kevin J. Anderson. Set 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides (Timotheé Chalamet), the series tells the story of the founding of the Bene Gesserit, the secretive, all-female (until Paul Atreides) order of superhuman power brokers who advise leaders and influence world events.
It follows sisters Valya (Oscar and Emmy nominee Emily Watson) and Tula Harkonnen (Olivia Williams) as they fight forces that threaten humanity’s future and create what becomes the Bene Gesserit.

Once known as Dune: The Sisterhood, the Max streaming series Dune: Prophecy, which serves as a prequel to the Dune feature films directed by Denis Villeneuve, started filming in November of 2022, then underwent quite a shake-up in 2023 when the director of the first two episodes, Johan Renck (who executive produced and directed all five episodes of the HBO limited series Chernobyl) decided to leave the project over creative issues, then Shirley Henderson (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) – who had been cast as one of the show’s lead characters – followed him out the door. Everything has been worked out since then, with Dune: Prophecy on track for a fall 2024 premiere. To start building the hype, Max just unveiled a teaser trailer for the show, and you can check it out in the embed above!

John Carter and Wall-e director Andrew Stanton is working on a fascinating new sci-fi film. If In The Blink Of An Eye sticks to the script, we could be in for something special.
His career stretching back to the late 1980s, Andrew Stanton is best known for his animated work at Pixar, whether it’s as writer (1995’s ground-breaking Toy Story) or writer-director.
As a live-action filmmaker, he’s probably almost as well known for 2012’s John Carter, a hugely expensive sci-fi adventure based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ A Princess Of Mars. One of those films that seemed to have vultures circling it before it was even released, John Carter was ultimately a box office misfire.
In the wake of it, Stanton kept himself busy with animated projects at Disney and Pixar, but has also found time to write or direct the odd TV episode, including instalments of Stranger Things,...

Dn last spoke with Colby Day when we premiered his one-shot short Lead/Follow back in early 2023. Day’s movement-led film caught our eye with its brisk yet all-encompassing depiction of the different stages of a romantic relationship. It’s a really special film and it left us eagerly anticipating what Day would make next. Then earlier this year it was announced that Day’s next project, this time as a screenwriter, would be playing Berlinale before premiering on Netflix shortly after. The project in question was Spaceman, an Adam Sandler and Carey Mulligan-starring science fiction drama directed by Johan Renck about an astronaut deep in the throes of space where he encounters a strange alien spider (voiced by Paul Dano) who helps him reflect on his failings as a husband. Similarly to Lead/Follow, Spaceman is an impressively expansive film that at its heart is about the trials...

While plot details are under wraps, the project has been described as a twisty, female-led thriller with pitch-black humor, set at a glittering destination for the ultra-rich. Ben Pugh, Peter Dealbert and Josh Varney will produce for 42.
A Goya Award nominee, Gullón is best known for scripting the surreal psychological thriller Enemy for director Denis Villeneuve. Stranger Things breakout Millie Bobby Brown is driving a sword through Netflix’s English Films List this week with her fantasy action flick Damsel, slaying the number one spot for the second week in a row! The Juan Carlos Fresnadillo-directed action-adventure film added 50.8M views to its coffers and was the most-watched title of the week. Damsel’s viewing total stands tall at 86.1M views in ten days, hitting the coveted #1 spot in 87 countries and reaching the Top 10 in 93.
Meanwhile, Lindsay Lohan’s romantic comedy Irish Wish pranced into the #2 slot, with 30.6M views in its first three days of release. The action-thriller Code 8: Part II nabbed the #4 spot (3.6M views), while Johan Renck’s Spaceman, starring Adam Sandler and Carey Mulligan, floated into the #9 spot with 3.1M views. In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at several music videos by director Johan Renck. Johan Renck's new film Spaceman, is only his second feature, after the minor indie release Downloading Nancy, but that doesn't mean he hasn't had a storied career. In fact, he has worn many hats, and his career seems only now to have reached the stellar proportions where something Renck-directed has automatic buzz. That is mostly due to a one-two-punch in recent years. After directing some big Breaking Bad episodes he hit it big by directing the entirety of HBO's hit series Chernobyl. Just a few years before that though, he made two music videos that...

Scott Kelly, the astronaut who until very recently held the American record for longest spaceflight, spent at least some of his time aboard the Iss thinking about “Breaking Bad.” NASA will set up calls for the astronauts in orbit with interesting people they want to talk to; so, unlike all “Breaking Bad” fans stuck on Earth, Kelly was able to talk with Vince Gilligan and Brian Cranston — and, as it turns out, director/producer Michelle MacLaren, who was in the room and would remember Kelly when she set out to direct the first two episodes of Apple TV+’s “Constellation.”

It’s unsurprising that Adam Sandler’s “Spaceman” is an immediate #1 for Netflix, but you have to wonder if the Sandler audience knew what it was getting: It’s the story of a long-distance solo astronaut who encounters loneliness and a mutant spider on his journey to Venus. Directed by Johan Renck, who won a DGA Award for his direction of HBO miniseries “Chernobyl,” it premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Reviews are mediocre and, per Netflix practice, it had token one-week showings in limited theaters. “Spaceman: debuted on the streamer March 1 and it will be interesting to see what kind of hold it maintains. For now, it’s another example of how Sandler uses his Netflix deal to expand his scope. (The film was produced by Channing Tatum’s Free Association.)

People starting the movie Spaceman would be forgiven for thinking that their Netflix had glitched. Yes, we do see Adam Sandler’s character Jakub dressed in a space suit. But he’s not floating through the cosmos. He’s walking through a wooded stream, the greenery of the trees and bushes reflecting off his mask.
What the heck does this have to do with being a space man, one might ask? By the end of the movie, directed by Johan Renck and written by Colby Day (adapting the novel Spaceman of Bohemia by Jaroslav Kalfař), Spaceman answers all your questions. Or rather, Jakub’s new friend, an alien spider named Hanuš, explains everything in the gentle, dulcet tones of Paul Dano.
Spaceman‘s strange, but ultimately clear, approach may frustrate some viewers. It may excite others, leaving them wanting to watch more sci-fi movies with a surrealist approach. Regardless of...

Johan Rench, perhaps best known for directing the groundbreaking HBO series Chernobyl, leaves behind the world of historical reality in exchange for one of futuristic endeavors. Spaceman, which stars Adam Sandler in a role unlike anything he’s attempted before, uses the science-fiction genre to explore the heart-wrenching affects of loss and regret in the realms of love. It’s reminiscent of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind in that regard, as well as for casting a traditionally comedic actor in the lead. I had the opportunity to speak with Renck about his latest project, an experience that was as pleasant as it was insightful.

Adam Sandler’s multi-year deal with Netflix has resulted in movies reviled (The Ridiculous 6), revered (Uncut Gems), and — with the new film Spaceman — bewildering and deliberately open to interpretation. “It’s like reading a book, listening to a song, or reading a poem, whatever,” director Johan Renck told RadioTimes.com. “Your own experiences will guide how you take in the film, basically.” So, what’s up with Spaceman’s ending? And what does it all mean? Here’s what we’ve gleaned… In the film — written by Colby Day and based on the Jaroslav Kalfař novel Spaceman of Bohemia — Sandler plays Jakub Procházka, a Czech astronaut six months into a Euro Space Program mission to investigate the mysterious space dust of our solar system’s (fictitious) Chopra cloud. As the sole astronaut on the mission, Jakub has ample time to reflect on his life, including his failing relationship with...

Plot: An astronaut realizes that the marriage he left behind might not be waiting for him when he returns to Earth.
Desperate to fix things with his wife, he is helped by a mysterious ancient creature he finds hiding in the bowels of his ship.
Review: It should no longer be surprising when Adam Sandler stars in dramatic roles. When Paul Thomas Anderson’s Punch-Drunk Love was released in 2002, Sandler was best known for films like Big Daddy and Little Nicky. Even though Sandler still releases broad comedies like Hubie Halloween and Murder Mystery, the actor has proven his talents in movies like Uncut Gems and Hustle. Adam Sandler’s latest dramatic project is Spaceman, a science-fiction tale set in the void of the solar system. This Spaceman article contains spoilers.
Jakub Procházka (Adam Sandler) has lofty goals. The first astronaut in the Czech Space Program, Jakub is on a year-long solo mission to study a strange violet phenomenon in deep space, dubbed the Chopra Cloud. “As I enter the Chopra cloud,” he tells the public via video-link from his ship the Jan Hus-1 (named from the 14th century proto-Protestant theologian), “I might just unravel some secrets of the universe.”
Despite Jakub’s grand ambitions, Spaceman director Johan Renck and screenwriter Colby Day, adapting the novel Spaceman of Bohemia by Jaroslav Kalfar, intend instead to explore the mysteries of the human heart. Jakub spends more time thinking about the death of his informant father and his estrangement from his pregnant wife Lenka (Carey Mulligan). Of course a lot of that soul searching comes via Hanuš, a giant telepathic spider who arrives to help heal Jakub’s distress.

Filmmaker Johan Renck’s moody new existential relationship astronaut movie with Adam Sandler, “Spaceman,” debuts today on Netflix. It’s the filmmaker’s first feature in 16 years, following 2008’s “Downloading Nancy,” but it’s not like he’s been away. After a career started in music videos—famous clips for artists like Madonna, Beyonce, Kylie Minogue, Robbie Williams, and more—Renck has spent the better part of the last decade in the world of television.

This week's episode of the Empire Podcast is perfectly balanced, as all things should be. In the first half, Chris Hewitt sits down with ol' Thanos himself, aka the one and only Josh Brolin, for a wide-ranging conversation that takes in birthday parties, Brolin's growth as an actor, his aversion to compliments, and his return as the indefatigable Gurney Halleck in Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Two, which opens this week (21:56 - 41:02 approx.) Chris then ticks another one off his bucket list by having a fun Zoom chat with Adam Sandler, star of the new Netflix sci-fi drama Spaceman, and his co-star Paul Dano (56:14 - 1:10:38 approx.)
Either side of those, Helen O'Hara hosts from the podbooth this week, and she, James Dyer, Alex Godfrey and Sophie Butcher tackle a couple of listener questions, one involving Muppets; discuss what passes for the week's movie news...

A big-budget series adaptation of a best-selling sci-fi epic, a new season of an acquired Peacock gem, a spinoff series of a Guy Ritchie crime feature, the return of one of the world’s most grueling reality competition shows, Millie Bobby Brown finding herself in all sorts of bother and Adam Sandler getting serious in a space drama are among the standout films and series hitting Netflix in March.

Spaceman is a sci-fi movie starring Adam Sandler. With Carey Mulligan, Kunal Nayyar, Paul Dano, Lena Olin, and Isabella Rossellini. It is written by Colby Day, and based on the book by Jaroslav Kalfar. A movie directed by Johan Renck.
For those who are fans of the comedic Adam Sandler, the Adam Sandler we all know… this movie is not for you. It’s not a comedy and you won’t recognize the easygoing character that has made the American actor so famous.
Here we have a man who goes crazy in space, after six months of isolation, and starts seeing a spider. His visions become more and more overwhelming, and introspection, space, and nothingness take over a consciousness that begins to reflect on itself.
Spaceman About the movie
A movie starring Adam Sandler is a movie in which his personality, his prominence in the production, his script… overshadow everything.

In Spaceman, based on the novel Spaceman of Bohemia by Jaroslav Kalfař, Adam Sandler plays Jakub, an astronaut adrift in the cosmos. And even in the context of the actor and comedian’s more dramatic performances (Hustleand Uncut Gems come to mind), the film sees Sandler exploring more somber and introspective territory.
“I really wanted to have a performance from him that had nothing to do with the Adam Sandler we all know,” director Johan Renck told Netflix. “I don’t think people understand how [although] he may come across as funny and sweet and all that, he’s very intelligent, really smart, profound.” All of those qualities had to come to bear for Spaceman: For most of the film, Sandler is alone on-screen — or sharing scenes with the mysterious creature who appears on the final leg of his interstellar mission.

At the end of Spaceman,Adam Sandler’s character, Jakub, finds himself back home — or does he? The final moments of the new science fiction drama are ambiguous, but they hint at a personal peace that its main character has been striving toward throughout. “What I like about art in any shape is for it to leave you with a thought,” director Johan Renck told Netflix. “If I turn off a film or leave a movie theater, and there’s something from that film that still kind of resonates, and the currents are still moving within me, that’s a success –– and a requirement for me.”
Below, you’ll find a map to the currents moving within Spaceman’s ending, with input from Renck himself.

The new film from Johan Renck, efficiently titled Spaceman, offers two central conceits. The first: that a vessel en route to a cloud of purple dust, somewhere in the region of Venus, might be visited by a benevolent alien with the ability to guide a human through their own memories. The second: that the Czech Space Agency’s chief representatives, on earth and off, might be played by Isabella Rossellini and Adam Sandler. Besides directing the music video for David Bowie’s “Blackstar,” Renck is best-known for Craig Mazin’s TV show Chernobyl, on which he helmed all five episodes. With Spaceman Renck borrows that show’s aesthetic: the sickly green-and-yellow color palette, the retro-futurist Soviet designs, the stifling solemnity. One thing you won’t find in Chernobyl, however, is Hanuś: an arachnid with Paul Dano’s voice, a body the size of a labrador, and six unblinking eyes, each...

If a certain kind of sci-fi film is anything to go on, what humanity is most likely to discover, as we venture out on our second space race, is some aspect of ourselves. In Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, Matthew McConaughey falls into a black hole only to find a multidimensional mirror into his own failures as a father. In James Gray’s Ad Astra, Brad Pitt goes to Jupiter and beyond to find peace with his dad. As far back as Andrei Tarkovsky’s Solaris, an alien planet manifests the memories of the astronauts who discover it. Even the cosmic trip of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey stages a return to origins of sorts.
In Johan Renck’s Spaceman, Adam Sandler becomes just the latest lonely spacefarer to have the abyss confront him with an uncanny reflection of himself. This story of an existentialist voyage to the stars,...

Despite his place as a comedy icon, Adam Sandler is no stranger to dramatic roles; yet, his performance in new Netflix film Spaceman is likely the most serious work he’s ever done.
At the film’s Los Angeles premiere on Monday, Sandler told The Hollywood Reporter how director Johan Renck “kept saying, ‘I want to see none of Adam Sandler in there,'” as the star joked, “I understood, I hear that in my house too: ‘I want to see none of Adam Sandler.'”
“I did my best,” Sandler continued of stripping his signature comedic style from the role. “He didn’t want me sounding like me, he didn’t want me making faces. It was a difficult process.”

Drifting alone through space in a cramped craft, headed toward Jupiter and a strange anomaly known as the Chopra cloud, cosmonaut Jakub Prochazka (Adam Sandler) conducts a satellite interview with schoolchildren back on Earth. A little girl asks: "I read that you're the loneliest man in the world ... does it make you sad to be so far away?" Thus the mood is set for "Spaceman," Johan Renck's melancholy sci-fi story about loneliness, love, and a giant talking space spider. This is a strange film, and perhaps the strangest aspect of all is that it stars Adam Sandler.
Sandler is no stranger to drama at this point. Indeed, whenever the comic performer turns around and delivers a dramatic performance it's almost always met with universal praise. Carey Mulligan says she’d love to star in a rom-com with Adam Sandler following their work together in the new Johan Renck-directed Netflix drama “Spaceman.”
“The Wedding Singer’ is one of my favorite movies, ‘50 First Dates,’ everything he’s done with Jennifer Aniston, I am there for it,” Mulligan told me at the “Spaceman” premiere Monday night at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood. “We have to do a rom-com 100 percent!”
And she’s already got the pitch – sort of: “We have to pick the location first where we want to have a really nice holiday and then build the story around that.”
Sandler stars in “Spaceman” as an astronaut on a solo, year-long mission in space. As he comes to realize that his marriage is in trouble (Mulligan plays his wife), he also starts seeing and talking to a giant spider (voiced by Paul Dano) that suddenly appears on his ship.

Fans of the film industry are divided when it comes to Adam Sandler. You either really enjoy his movies or you simply don’t. There is no in-between. The actor is mainly known for his work in the comedy genre, especially romcoms which make us all giddy on the inside. Sure, the critics are not huge fans of Adam Sandler’s movies, but we as an audience have to agree that the films can be wholesome to watch!

After two slow-as-molasses months, things are about to heat up at the 2024 box office in March. Fortunately, for those more inclined to stay home as we wait out the final weeks of winter, there are plenty of alternative options for your entertainment fix to choose from on Netflix. In addition to its usual smattering of kids' shows, international releases, and comedy specials, the streamer will unveil intriguing new projects starring the likes of Millie Bobby Brown and Regina King, along with some endeavors that could only exist on Netflix.

Adam Sandler has gone pseudo-serious before, from a mentally agitated toilet plunger salesman in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Punch-Drunk Love” to a depressed comic in Judd Apatow’s “Funny People.” But he’s never been so dour as cosmonaut Jakub Prochazka in Johan Renck’s lonely island of a science-fiction drama, “Spaceman,” where he’s six months into a solitary research mission investigating spectral cloud activity around the planet Jupiter.
Sci-fi cinephiles are certainly familiar with the cinematic wonderments capable of the gas giant, thanks to Stanley Kubrick’s Stargate sequence in “2001: A Space Odyssey,” which sends Keir Dullea on an existential trip into Jupiter’s furthest depths. While most people conceive Adam Sandler as the comedy star who excels in slapstick comedies and hilarious rom-coms, his dramatic chops as an actor often go underappreciated. Time and time again, The Meyerowitz Stories Star has put his dramatic chops on full display, with his most notable work being 2019’s Uncut Gems, which many argued should’ve earned Sandler an Oscar nod.
Since then, the actor has continued to take on more dramatic roles, with his recent release being Spaceman, which brought in a whole new challenge for the Hustle Star that pushed his boundaries.

Imagine a movie akin to a sad David Bowie song about an astronaut drifting alone into the dark abyss of space, contemplating his life, his lost love, his past, and an uncertain, perhaps soon-to-be-shortly doomed future. Sing the wistfully estranged and reflective “Space Odyssey” tune and the lamenting iconic line, “Tell my wife I love her very much, she knows!” That’s Swedish filmmaker Johan Renck’s “Spaceman” in a nutshell, which makes for possibly the weirdest, most existentially lonely movie Adam Sandler has ever starred in.
