Two-time Oscar winner Emma Stone and actor Ryan Gosling have starred together in three films to date and have been lauded for their on-screen chemistry. While they began with the romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love, the pairing worked wonders in the musical romance La La Land, which won Stone her first Oscar for Best Actress.
The two also had many memorable scenes in the Steve Carrell starrer Crazy, Stupid, Love, where they played a budding couple. According to co-director Glenn Ficarra, the makers went with Emma Stone because she was the only one who was not intimidated by Gosling’s presence during the audition.

Ryan Gosling is living his best life these days. Or certainly his funniest. After earning an Academy Award nomination purely based on his ability to persuasively turn “Kenergy” into a noun in last summer’s Barbie, he brought that pure, uncut Ken stuff to the Oscar stage. No, not by winning the prize, but by taking home the hearts and minds of the internet with an epic performance of “I’m Just Ken.”
In hindsight, the spectacle of it all might be viewed as a turning point in his career as audiences embrace the guy who seemed so stoic and tortured in the 2010s—with his understated leading roles in Drive, Blade Runner 2049, Blue Valentine, and First Man—as actually a great comedy talent. His next studio vehicle, The Fall Guy, is in theaters now, and we can vouch for it being a breezy, lighthearted entertainment given life by...

"Crazy, Stupid, Love" is one of the best romantic comedies of the 2010s. Directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa from a script by "This is Us" creator Dan Fogelman, the film features an absolutely incredible all-star cast that includes Julianne Moore, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Kevin Bacon, Marisa Tomei, John Carroll Lynch, and Joey King.
"Crazy, Stupid, Love" strikes a rare balance between being clever and sincere, emotional but not overly sentimental. The LA Times called the film "a grand romantic gesture about grand romantic gestures" when it was first released, and it hits exactly why it remains so well-liked.
The plot follows several separate storylines about people looking and reaching for seemingly out-of-reach love. At the center is Carell's Cal Weaver, a man who recently separated from his wife and gets advice from a womanizer (Gosling) on how to charm women. At the same time, Cal's...

Emma Stone formed an immediate bond with Ryan Gosling when they first collaborated. So much so that Stone quipped she wanted to do as many projects as she could with the actor.

Stone and Gosling first collaborated on the feature Crazy, Stupid Love. The film’s directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa both remarked that they sensed instant chemistry between the two stars.
“If I remember correctly she wasn’t exactly what was described on paper, but John and I had both been taken with her in Superbad and then in Zombieland,” Ficarra once told Entertainment Weekly. “It felt inevitable that she was going to hit. Ho Ho Ho motherf*ckers! Yup, it’s that time of year again…the giving season. As families everywhere come together to celebrate the holidays, bundle up by the fire, and indulge in a parade of sappy Christmas movies, the real adults in the room are going to need something with a bit more kick. Think about it, the all-time best Christmas movies – It’s a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, A Christmas Story, Home Alone, you name it – all revolve around sentimental family-friendly stories for children and adults to enjoy equally. But f*ck all that, Jack, this year we’re all about honoring a bona fide Christmas classic expressly aimed at adult audiences. While Die Hard and Violent Night are worthy action-packed contenders, it’s time to dish out the edible cookies and spiked eggnog for Bad Santa – easily the most politically incorrect and controversially transgressive Christmas comedy on record.

The good news is that if there isn’t a second season of Rabbit Hole, the first didn’t leave us completely hanging. The bad news is that we do have quite a few questions after the finale. For instance: Who is John (Kiefer Sutherland) moving forward after everything he’s been through? Can he trust Hailey (Meta Golding)? Can this new team work together? What other secrets is Ben (Charles Dance) hiding? Who was on the other end of that in-ear comm Ben took off the (supposedly) dead Crowley? But will there be a second season? Executive producers, writers, and directors John Requa and Glenn Ficarra want one and have ideas, but when TV Insider spoke with them, they could only say they were thinking about doing one, though they couldn’t say more with the ongoing writers’ strike. Sutherland certainly wants to do more. “I absolutely adored working on the show,...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Rabbit Hole Season 1 finale “Ace in the Hole.”] While the Rabbit Hole Season 1 finale did wrap up some threads, it also left us wanting more. John (Kiefer Sutherland) has a new team and seems to have found love with Hailey (Meta Golding). He and his dad Ben (Charles Dance) are on much better terms. Crowley is dead (maybe). But there’s someone else running things, as Ben learns when he finds that in-ear comm at the end. Executive producers, writers, and directors John Requa and Glenn Ficarra answer our burning questions and tease what could be next if the series is renewed. Can you confirm that was Crowley and he is dead? Because Charles Dance told me not to trust the finale and then there was that in-ear comm that Ben found and someone was on the other end… John Requa & Glenn Ficarra: That’s a tough one. Let’s...

We've made it through Rabbit Hole Season 1 with a remarkably clean exit
John Weir and his new team successfully ended Crowley's reign... we think. The truth is that with as many redirects and false leads the show delivers, even Ben could have mistaken the fella in the chair for his old pal.
We had a chance to talk with series creators Glenn Ficarra and John Requa about that, their thoughts on the season, the finale, and what might be next.
Congrats on a great season and a finale that wrapped up a lot. The misdirects with the kidnapped woman and Madi's wife, and Liv were so well done.
I had no idea what was going on, but when Liv was hardly affected by being kidnapped, I thought she was more than just John's wife. Still, I didn't expect her to be somebody else entirely! How did all of that come together?...

Rarely am I at a loss for words, but Rabbit Hole Season 1 Episode 8 wrapped things up so entirely that this is one of those exceptional times.
If you're like me, you probably lament the possibility of a show being canceled without answers.
Without a renewal, this Paramount+ series offered a closed case (probably) and didn't leave viewers hanging on for dear life if a renewal never comes.
In this case, I'm not sure if that was good or not.
Can this really be all there is to say about how precious data is to those who need it but even more to those who shouldn't have it?
If you were to ask series creators Glenn Ficarra and John Requa -- and I did -- the answer is, well, yeah.
The interview will be live on the site just an hour after the review, so you can see for yourselves how it all plays out.

In the finale of “Rabbit Hole,” which premiered on Paramount+ on Sunday, May 7, Kiefer Sutherland’s corporate espionage expert John Weir goes up against a shadowy criminal mastermind named Crowley who is said to “own” two judges on the Supreme Court. If the plot sound strangely familiar, a quick look at current events will tell you why, as real-life Supreme Court judge Clarence Thomas‘ extravagant windfalls from well-heeled Republican donor Harlan Crow continue to dominate headlines.
It’s not the first time that the plot of a Kiefer Sutherland series mirrored current events: Before the WGA strike went into effect, TheWrap caught up with the actor and producer to discuss how he’s back in the same territory as his iconic ’00s series “24” — and whether he and “Rabbit Hole” co-creators Glenn Ficarra and John Requa want to come back for more. [Spoilers for the Season 1 finale below]:

Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone have frequently collaborated with each other in movies. But Gosling once joked that their friendship could sometimes cause trouble when trying to do dramatic movie scenes.

Audiences saw Gosling and Stone collaborate for the first time in the 2011 romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid Love. Stone once confided that the film was also responsible for bringing the pair together.
“We met in the audition for Crazy, Stupid, Love. Which was the day after the Oscars…2010,” she once told Variety.
Gosling hadn’t starred in too many comedies prior to Crazy, Stupid, Love. So when Stone signed on to the project, it gave Gosling confidence in the feature.

“Rabbit Hole” stars Kiefer Sutherland as a corporate espionage consultant who must go on the run after being framed for murder by a shadowy but powerful group, a character that is used to being on the receiving end of punches, quite unlike the character he’s best known for on “24.”
The Paramount+ series pairs Sutherland with “Crazy, Stupid Love,” “This is Us” and “WeCrashed” writer-directors John Requa and Glenn Ficarra. When they pitched him on a series that’s a throwback to ’70s conspiracy thrillers “Three Days of the Condor” and “Marathon Man” and “The Parallax View,” he was fully on board. “I’m so lucky that they called me first,” Sutherland told TheWrap ahead of the series premiere on March 26.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the first two episodes of Rabbit Hole, “Pilot” and “At Any Given Moment.”] Kiefer Sutherland’s new Paramount+ thriller is a trip. And we’re only two episodes in. So far: John (Sutherland) suspects there’s more to a woman he meets in a bar, Hailey (Meta Golding), than she’s saying. (There is.) His old partner, Valence (Jason Butler Harner), hires him to kill a U.S. Treasury officer, Edward (Rob Yang). (He doesn’t.) Valence shocks him by falling to his death right in front of him. John’s office explodes, with his team inside. The Intern (Walt Klink) fights him for a key fob. (John wins.) Oh, and John’s father, who supposedly died when he was a kid? He’s alive, now played by Charles Dance. Executive producers, writers, and directors John Requa and Glenn Ficarra tease when we’ll get answers to our series premiere burning questions. John’...

You know who I miss?
I miss Weird Kiefer Sutherland. Like the McRib, Weird Kiefer Sutherland was a limited-time-only event that took place between Sutherland’s ’80s and ’90s run as a conventional movie star and then his ’00s and ’10s run as a conventional television star. At the time, I’m afraid many people treated Weird Kiefer Sutherland as an almost disappointing anomaly like, “Man, look how far Kiefer Sutherland’s career has fallen,” rather than appreciatively tabulating all the wonderfully bizarre choices Sutherland was making in films like Dark City or even his one-minute cameo in A Few Good Men.
If there’s anything I admire about Paramount+’s new financial espionage thriller Rabbit Hole — and I wish I admired more about it — it’s the attempt to build the show as a Grand Unified Theory of Kiefer Sutherland Performances. There’s a little Movie Star Kiefer, a...

Kiefer Sutherland returns to TV on Sunday with his new Paramount+ series Rabbit Hole — the actor’s latest thriller following Fox’s iconic 24 and his ABC/Netflix series Designated Survivor. The 56-year-old Sutherland delivers his trademark mix of charm, intensity and desert-dry humor as he plays John Weir, a morally shady corporate spy who finds himself framed for murder by conspiratorial forces. The show tackles the rather timely theme of misinformation and campaigns of organized public deception
Yet for all the intimidating hardness of his characters, Sutherland came across exceedingly pleasant in real life. When our original audio interview file for this story was lost in a recorder meltdown (every reporter’s nightmare), Sutherland gamely offered to chat for this story a second time, and couldn’t have been nicer about it (at the end of our do-over, the actor joked, “I hope to talk to you again, brother, but just about something else!

When Rabbit Hole premieres on Paramount+ on Sunday, March 26, you have writing and producing partners Glenn Ficarra and John Requa to thank for it.
The series follows John Weir, "a master of deception in the world of corporate espionage framed for murder by powerful forces who have the ability to influence and control populations." Read our full review here.
We had a chance to talk with them during a recent press day, and they offered insight into many things, including what inspired Rabbit Hole and why Kiefer Sutherland was always their John Weir.
You've been partners in this business for a long time. How long had you been toying with the idea of Rabbit Hole?
Glenn: Surprisingly, not long. Well, it was about two years ago, I guess. We got the first inklings of the idea and wrote it pretty quickly during the pandemic and sold it, and got it into production.

If you’ve been missing Jack Bauer in your life, Kiefer Sutherland’s latest TV gig won’t disappoint. In “Rabbit Hole,” Paramount+’s slick new action thriller, Sutherland takes up the mantle of a present-day Robin Hood: one who robs the rich with elevated psychology and predictive behavior in order to help the causes he cares about.
Until, of course, it all goes wrong, and John Weir becomes the accused murderer at the center of a massive conspiracy, and is forced to go on the run. And that’s when the real fun begins.
The pilot sets up this premise spectacularly, with plenty of special effects and street shots. Viewers quickly learn about Weir’s paranoid disposition and his traumatic past while setting him up as the skilled swindler you can’t help rooting for. Surely you didn’t expect a show titled Rabbit Hole to lay all of its cards on the table. Deception piles on deception in a conspiracy thriller for Paramount+ from Glenn Ficcara and John Requa (Bad Santa) that manages to find occasional humor in its dense patchwork of illusion. Making a welcome return to save-the-world TV, 24’s Kiefer Sutherland broods anti-heroically as John Weir, a corporate dirty-tricks specialist (“Forgive me my lack of shame”), haunted by childhood trauma, who falls into an elaborate trap that renders him an instant fugitive. In a twist reminiscent of the 1970s’ classic Three Days of the Condor, Weir drags a recent though intimate acquaintance, Hailey Winton (the terrific Meta Golding), into his web. As befits the genre, she may be seemingly innocent but ...

There's no denying that "Rabbit Hole," the upcoming Paramount+ series which stars Kiefer Sutherland, is a thriller with a lot of twists and turns. But what not might be as expected is that the show, created by John Requa and Glenn Ficarra, has plenty of funny moments, too.
"I was expecting all of the tentpole ideas of a good thriller, but the humor was just such a bonus," Sutherland told me in a recent interview. "And it wasn't complicated gag humor where you have to figure out how to fall down three flights of stairs and then jump up with a clown nose. This is a really sophisticated, sarcastic, charming kind of humor."
That charming humor is paired with some mind-boggling twists, where almost every episode ends with reveals which completely flips the table on any assumptions you might have had about what is going on. I talked with Sutherland...

"Rabbit Hole," the upcoming Paramount+ series starring Kiefer Sutherland, is an ode to spy thrillers throughout the decades. Taking inspiration from the espionage movies of the '70s as well as the counterterrorism television shows of the turn of the new millennium, "Rabbit Hole" plays out like a greatest hits of the spy genre according to early reviews. In an exclusive interview with /Film's Vanessa Armstrong, showrunners John Requa and Glenn Ficarra explain that their influences travel further than just spy stories, ranging from "Breaking Bad" to the 1997 David Fincher film "The Game."
"Rabbit Hole" will inevitably receive comparisons to "24," and not just because of the presence of Sutherland. The show follows a twisty path as mysteries unfold and a simple procedural turns into something more complicated, although this time Sutherland switches his allegiances from the feds to the more lucrative and even more morally dubious world of corporate espionage.

Kiefer Sutherland secured his place as America's fictional hero with 24's Jack Bauer.
There's something about his portrayal that makes people feel comfortable imagining their life in his hands.
The new Paramount+ series Rabbit Hole will put that feeling to the test.
In Rabbit Hole, Sutherland plays John Weir, "a master of deception in the world of corporate espionage," who is "framed for murder by powerful forces who have the ability to influence and control populations."
There's a lot to unpack in that series summary, and there's even more to unpack as the series begins to unfold.
Instead of being America's hero, John Weir must deconstruct events that led to his framing.
I'm not a fan of so many twists in a series that you can't keep up or catch up to the narrative to understand what's going on. But although Rabbit Hole is jam-packed with twists and turns and turns on the twists,...

Thanks to readily accessible information at our fingertips, we don't really have folk heroes anymore, but kayfabe is still alive thanks to the world of professional wrestling ... err, I mean, "sports entertainment." Of those figures, there is no one quite as polarizing as Vincent Kennedy McMahon. For nearly half a century, Vince McMahon has been the most powerful presence in the world of professional wrestling, turning WWE into one of the most financially successful companies in all of entertainment.
His influence and importance cannot be overstated, which is why it's so difficult to grapple with his legacy. Plot: John Weir, a master of deception in the world of corporate espionage, is framed for murder by powerful forces who have the ability to influence and control populations.
Review: Kiefer Sutherland experienced a career resurgence when he played Jack Bauer on the long-running Fox series 24. As an unabashed fan of the insane, real-time thriller series, I loved Sutherland’s intense portrayal of an All-American hero who would stop at nothing to defend his country. After 24 left the air, Sutherland played a much different character in the political series Designated Survivor. Sutherland’s down-to-earth performance was consistent throughout the series, which made him an everyman character who bordered on being a superhero. Now, Kiefer is back in a new thriller show with action elements and conspiracy theories aplenty, this time on a streaming platform where he can drop copious f-bombs while still defending the United States from nefarious bad guys...

The two episodes that screened at the SXSW Film Festival represent the kind of meat-and-potatoes, no-frills espionage goodness that's sometimes missing in the age of high-concept television. This is the kind of show focused more on delivering familiar goods and making sure the goods work rather than breaking new ground, and quite frankly, that's more than enough.
Also quite frankly: it's the kind of show that knows what audiences want out of Sutherland and delivers that ... while also tweaking his persona just enough to keep viewers on their toes.

Only after coming face to face with the man sent to bring him — and some very fast running (the only way Cruise can) — does he manage to escape. Then he’s in the wind, left to pinpoint who betrayed him, why, and how he can clear his name.
