Mary Lou Retton says she’s “blessed” and “grateful” to be alive after being diagnosed with a rare form of pneumonia that put her in the ICU and had her children at one point “saying their goodbyes to me.”
The former U.S. Olympic gymnast and gold medalist opened up about a near-deadly health scare that saw her nearly put on life support. It was an ordeal made all the more challenging by Retton’s lack of insurance.
During a 10-minute sit down with Today‘s Hoda Kotb, Retton revealed that following a divorce, and more than 30 orthopedic surgeries and other conditions classified by insurance as pre-existing, she was unable to afford her own health care as she was struck with a still unidentified form of pneumonia that saw her family and medical team discussing putting her on a ventilator.

After years of working in Hollywood, Taika Waititi has lived through the classic biopic scene where a protagonist wakes up and immediately questions all of their life choices.
“What the fuck am I doing? Why am I doing this? For what reason? There’s no purpose and I’m getting nothing out of this,” Waititi said in an interview with IndieWire at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. “And then we realize, ‘Oh, but the reason we do this is to help people in our community.’ To keep pulling each other up and supporting each other, that is the purpose. That’s the reason to be doing any of this.”
Though he has made headlines for being at the festival to premiere his long-awaited sports comedy “Next Goal Wins,” Waititi is also promoting the independent film “Frybread Face and Me” from writer-director Billy Luther, which he executive produced. The coming-of-age story...

The eight remaining queens are: Angeria Paris VanMicheals, Bosco, Daya Betty, DeJa Skye, Jasmine Kennedie, Jorgeous, Lady Camden, and Willow Pill.
Following Kerri’s elimination, Jasmine’s emotions continued to spill out over the fact that she was the one to send such a huge inspiration to her home.

There’s always a strong sense of excitement in the air when the safe queens of RuPaul’s Drag Race gather to watch their bottom brethren lip sync for their lives. But this week, the girls were positively giddy.
“Let me tell you this, America, we have been waiting for this!” DeJa Skye confidently claimed as Friday’s bottom two, Jasmine Kennedie and Jorgeous, sweated it out under the lights of the main stage. Even Angeria Paris VanMichaels piled on: “Oh, yes! The Jasmine vs. Jorgeous lip sync smackdown!”

Sunisa Lee is joining Dancing With the Stars for season 30, and she already has the support of one of her teammates. During an interview with People, Simone Biles, who previously competed on the show during season 24, shared how excited she was for Lee to join the cast. In fact, Biles thinks Lee has what it takes to win the Mirrorball Trophy. "I think she'll do really well," Biles said. "I think America will fall in love with her because she has such an inspiring story." Though Biles hasn't had a chance to give Lee any advice, she definitely plans to tune into the show and cheer her on from afar. "I wish her the best, we're definitely going to be watching her as we tour," she said, referencing the Gold Over America tour.

“Dancing with the Stars” has booked its first two celebrities for Season 30: Olympic champion gymnast Suni Lee and singer/dancer JoJo Siwa, ABC announced Thursday during the Television Critics Association summer press tour.
Lee and Siwa will be on Friday’s “Good Morning America” to discuss their casting and will return to “GMA” on Wednesday, Sept. 8 when the remaining 13 celebrities will be revealed. Celebrity-pro pairings will again be unveiled live on the premiere, which is on Monday, Sept. 20. But in a first, Siwa will have a female partner, executive producer Andrew Llinares revealed during the panel, marking the show’s first same-sex couple.
“I think it breaks a wall that’s never been broken down before,” Siwa, who came out as pansexual in April, said. “Not only do I get to share with the world that you get to love who you want to love, but also you get...

Let us know which you’d most like to see on “DWTS” by voting in the poll at the bottom of this post And of course let us know in the comments who else you would like to see when the show returns in September.

Sharna Burgess got hers last year. Is it time for one of the guys to get theirs? Save for Val Chmerkovskiy, none of the male pros left on “Dancing with the Stars” this season have ever won the show before — and neither had first bootee Brandon Armstrong. Compare that to the female pros, all of whom have triumphed, including Cheryl Burke who left this week after Ray Lewis withdrew due to injury. Truly a case of the haves and the have-nots. Will a first-time guy break through this season? And if so, which one of these four dudes do you want to get their hands on a Mirrorball first?
In his seventh season as a pro, Gleb Savchenko debuted in Season 16 with Lisa Vanderpump, finishing 10th. His other placements have generally been toward the back of the pack, except for Season 23, where he made it to fourth place with Jana Kramer.

Do we have our first contestant of “Dancing with the Stars” Season 28? It’s not set in stone yet, but don’t be surprised if one of the names you’ll hear announced later this summer is Katelyn Ohashi.
Who? She’s an All-American gymnast at UCLA. If you were anywhere near the internet in January, you may recall her floor exercise routine at the Collegiate Challenge that went viral. You know the one. She got a perfect 10 for her frenetic, booty-shaking routine to a medley of hits, including “Proud Mary,” “September” and “I Want You Back,” that, lbr, did half the work in making it go viral. Then Ohashi clapped back at lame body-shaming trolls on “Good Morning America,” which, hey, airs on ABC just like “Dancing”!
Anyway, Ohashi, who will graduate from UCLA in June, is officially done with gymnastics (injuries had long ago derailed her elite senior...

“For years I’ve been lacking confidence because I lost my sheen,” Unicorn revealed in the third episode of “The Masked Singer.” She then added, “Before my last performance I was so scared, but as soon as I stepped on that stage, I was flying high.” For her encore performance, Unicorn took on Britney Spears‘s “Oops!… I Did It Again” and had judges Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger and Robin Thicke scratching their heads about her true identity. Watch the performance above.
When host Nick Cannon asked Unicorn if she was a gymnast, the costumed celeb quickly responded, “In the bedroom.” In the “clues” portion of Fox’s reality TV show, Unicorn teased, “I came here to conquer my fear of singing and of being judged. And I did it. So this week I’m going to exude model behavior. I’m feeling victorious and tonight I am going for the gold.

A majority of “Dancing with the Stars” fans wanted the perpetually cursed Keo Motsepe to win Season 27 over four-time finalist Sharna Burgess, but now that she got her Mirrorball, you don’t think Motsepe is the most overdue pro. Nope, 38 percent of you think that title now belongs to Sasha Farber.
Farber, who was eliminated in ninth place this season with Mary Lou Retton, has been on six seasons, first appearing as a pro in Season 17. One of the most easygoing pros, he posted his best finish with Tonya Harding in third place on Season 26. His best chance at a win, however, was arguably with Simone Biles in Season 24, but the pair was shockingly axed in the semifinal. His wife, Emma Slater, ended up winning that season with Rashad Jennings, and you know the show would like to have three pro couples who’ve won Mirrorballs.
Motsepe grabbed 34 percent of the vote.

Sharna Burgess finally won “Dancing with the Stars” with a partner she probably never expected to win with, Bobby Bones, and that means the 12-season veteran and former four-time finalist can at long last shed her bridesmaid status. So to whom does that label go next? Of the current cast, four pros have been on at least five seasons and they all just so happen to be dudes. This makes sense since Burgess was the only female pro who hadn’t won on Season 27 and Val Chmerkovskiy was the only male pro who had won. So which of these four guys would you like to see win next?
The “oldest” of these four, in terms of their inaugural seasons, not tenures, is Gleb Savchenko. He made his pro debut in Season 16, along with Burgess and Lindsay Arnold, and finished in 10th place with Lisa Vanderpump. He didn’t return to...

Although the ratings have dropped over time, fans shouldn't worry too much that ABC will cancel its Dancing with the Stars TV show. It still performs well for the network, and is probably far less expensive to produce than some lower-rated scripted dramas. Still, the day may come when they decide to give the format a rest, so we're keeping an eye on the Nielsen ratings just in case. Will Dancing with the Stars be cancelled or renewed for season 28? Stay tuned. *Status update below.

Los Cabos, Mexico — Sundance nominee and National Board of Review grant winning short filmmaker Charlotte Glynn is preparing her fiction feature debut, “The Gymnast,” and met with Variety to discuss the project at the Los Cabos market and festival where she is participating in the Films in Development section.
A Pittsburgh-raised New York transplant, Glynn has made waves with her highly regionalized short films, set in the rust belt city which hosted her formative years. Her short film “The Immaculate Reception,” was a festival hit which caught the eyes of Showtime’s “Billions” writers and producers Michael Harrop, Brian Koppelman and David Levien who are producing “The Gymnast.”
Set in Pittsburgh, 1993, nearly 10 years after U.S. gymnast Mary Lou Retton’s historic Olympic games, Monica (14) a gymnast on her own path to the Olympics tears a ligament in her knee just five weeks before what would be the most important competition of her young career.

There are eight celebrities remaining on “Dancing with the Stars,” but by the end of the night that number will be cut down to six. It’s Country Night, and two contestants will be drummed out in a double elimination — or maybe banjoed out in the spirit of the show’s theme. Who will it be?
Considering how the season has gone so far, it seems like one of the ousted celebs will probably be a woman. This is been a historically bad season for female stars, who have been the victims of all five eliminations thus far. The only two left are model Alexis Ren and “Harry Potter” actress Evanna Lynch. They both have earned high scores this season, but that didn’t help contestants like Tinashe and Mary Lou Retton.

Silly us, we’d been wondering if there would be an all-male final three on “Dancing with the Stars,” but there is now a far more concerning prospect in play: Will there be an unprecedented all-male top six?
The women’s curse continued this week with Mary Lou Retton becoming the fifth consecutive female to be eliminated this season. That leaves only Alexis Ren and Evanna Lynch remaining against the same six guys who started the season: Milo Manheim, Juan Pablo Di Pace, DeMarcus Ware, John Schneider, Bobby Bones and Joe “Grocery Store Joe” Amabile. With a double elimination next week, there is a decent chance we could lose both ladies.
While we’ll never know the final tallies, it’s safe to assume that Ren hasn’t been pulling in the votes. She is a Sports Illustrated model, and there’s not much of a cross-section of fans between that and “Dancing.

Some “Dancing with the Stars” Halloween routines posted some scary high YouTube numbers this week, but one person who’s been logging a ton of views fell off drastically. It’s no trick, but it might be a treat for some people.
Again, some caveats:
1. Needless to say, not everyone who watches a contestant’s dance on YouTube is voting and vice versa.
2. Not every star or dance is created equal. Some people already come in with major notoriety and a fan base, which could boost views. Some pros have a bigger fan base than the stars they’re teaching. Some people accrue fans as the season progresses. Sometimes a performance is just flat-out amazing or a complete hot mess or meme-worthy that everyone is going to be Googling it the next day so they don’t have Fomo.
3. These are the plays as of press time, so they will...

Joe “Grocery Store Joe” Amabile survived another week of “Dancing with the Stars.” Halloween Night instead ended with the ouster of the fifth female celebrity in a row: Mary Lou Retton. But since the judges scored him higher than usual this time around — for the first time he didn’t finish last on the judges’ leaderboard — they may have guaranteed he’ll advance for yet another week given his overwhelming support from viewers thus far. So how long can he ride this out? Vote in our poll below to let us know how far he’ll go.

In her video package that aired before her final dance, she revealed that she had never told the world that she and her husband of 27 years had divorced this past February. With only four weeks left in the season, it was do-or-die for the remaining nine couples on “Dancing with the Stars.” On Monday night each couple performed a Halloween-themed routine in the hopes of spooking the judges and audiences into granting them another week in the competition.
At the end of the night Milo Manheim and Juan Pablo Di Pace tied for the top spot with both earning perfect scores of 30 out of 30. Meanwhile, Evanna Lynch had a breakthrough this week earning her highest scores yet. Also for the first time this season, Grocery Store Joe did not place at the bottom of the leaderboard. Unfortunately, that honor went to John Schneider, whose “Beetlejuice”-inspired paso doble left the judges cold.

However, only one couple was eliminated and at the end of the night and no, it’s not the guy that many were hoping would go.
