Back in the 1990s, the Black Crowes blew up out of Atlanta, playing soulful, swaggering classic rock in an era of alt-rock irony and grunge bellyaching. Even more impressively, the two guys at the heart of the band — singer Chris Robinson and his guitar-playing brother Rich — managed to pull off their multi-platinum run while absolutely hating each other, like an American version of Oasis. But eventually the tension between Chris and Rich forced the Crowes to close up shop.

Netflix is set to release Zack Snyder’s latest work, “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire.” Known for his distinct style in films like “Justice League” and “Dawn of the Dead,” Snyder brings his unique touch to this space opera. The film, initially envisioned as a “Star Wars” project, morphed into an original narrative, blending influences from “Star Wars” and “Gladiator.”
The story unfolds on a moon at the universe’s edge, under threat from Regent Balisarius’s armies. Kora, portrayed by Sofia Boutella, emerges as a mysterious figure among the villagers. She becomes their hope against the overpowering Motherworld, assembling a diverse band of warriors. These outsiders and orphans of war, from varied worlds, unite for redemption and revenge.

Director Zack Snyder gets some mockery for his rather on-the-nose needle drops in movies -- from "Down with the Sickness" in "Dawn of the Dead" to The Cranberrys' "Zombie" in his most recent zombie movie, "Army of the Dead" -- but it helps that every needle drop is an absolute banger. Case in point: the new trailer for "Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire" serenades the stirrings of a space revolution with T. Rex's "Children of the Revolution."
Originally conceived as a "Star Wars" project, Snyder's epic space opera soon became its own thing when Lucasfilm made it clear that the R-rated action he wanted was a "non-starter." And so "Rebel Moon" became an original story, albeit influenced by "Star Wars" and, perhaps even more so, by "Gladiator".

Classic rock fans are better than anyone else at coming up with oddball theories. Fans thought one of Elton John’s songs was about Elvis Presley. John’s co-writer put an end to that idea. Regardless, the song still has lyrics that sound like they’re about the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
Elton John songs were rumored to be about Elvis Presley and Marc Bolan
John’s chief writing partner has been lyricist Bernie Taupin. Together, the two wrote classic tracks such as “Candle in the Wind,” “Your Song,” and “Rocket Man.” During a 2023 interview with Vulture, Taupin discussed fan interpretations of his lyrics.
“People assume the songs are about things when they’re not,” he said. “In the book, I write about people thinking ‘I’m Going to Be a Teenage Idol’ was about [T. Rex singer] Marc Bolan, and it wasn’t. It could have been, and maybe it should have been,...

This article contains spoilers for "The Exorcist: Believer."
William Friedkin's celebrated horror film "The Exorcist" was so popular upon its release in 1973 that it more or less invented a genre. Thanks to "The Exorcist," film audiences around the world know what demonic possession is, what demons look like, and what particular sect of Christian clergyman needs to be called in to take care of the problem. If a loved one begins spewing green slime, speaking in Latin, and levitating above their bed, you best be sure that a Methodist minister will not be called. No, it's Roman Catholic priests or bust.
To pause for a moment on that green slime, however, it's a reference to two moments in "The Exorcist" when the young Regan MacNeil (Linda Blair) weaponized gastrointestinal discomfort toward a visitor. Regan, under demonic influence, projectile vomits pea-green ooze copiously on passers-by. The vomiting effect was achieved...

"His records were too out there for American audiences at that time." Dogwoof has revealed the trailer a music history documentary film titled Angelheaded Hipster: The Songs of Marc Bolan & T. Rex, by filmmaker Ethan Silverman. Everything is explained right there in the title - this film celebrates the life and work of glam rock pioneer Marc Bolan (who died in 1977 at the age of 29) while portraying a behind-the-scenes look at the tribute album of the same name produced by Hal Wilner. This first premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival last year, with a UK release set for September, though still no US debut confirmed yet. It seems like a comprehensive look at the life and music of Marc Bolan & T. Rex, along with a contemporary attempt to modernize and pay homage to his music with other musicians reworking his creations. Tons of people are featured in this, including musicians like Nick Cave,...

Ringo Starr has lived in the spotlight for decades. It didn’t take him long to see it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. The Fab Four brought Ringo fame, but he still got bored in the time between recording sessions and other obligations. The Beatles drummer played in the most popular band ever, met and had intimate relationships with other famous entertainers, and enjoyed a rarefied lifestyle few people from a working-class Liverpool neighborhood could dream of. Sometimes, he wished he could go back.
Ringo Starr said his Beatles fame contributed to his boring life
Ringo partied with Charlie Watts and John Bonham. He formed friendships with T. Rex’s Marc Bolan and Harry Nilsson. The drummer and Nilsson lived with John Lennon in Los Angeles in the mid-1970s. Starr partied so hard the bright sun hurt his eyes, so he made his room into a den of darkness,...

Ringo Starr has said for decades that he only ever wanted to be a drummer. Mission accomplished, sir. His steady backbeat helped make The Beatles the biggest band on earth. On a few occasions, he outshined his bandmates and came up big on their best songs. We didn’t know it at the time, but the world changed when Richard Starkey was born on July 7, 1940. To celebrate Ringo’s birthday, here are 10 of his best solo songs from his post-Beatles career to listen to.
Ringo Starr’s birthday coincided with some major Beatles events
There must have been something about early July that made it a special time for members of The Beatles.
John Lennon and Paul McCartney first met on July 6, 1957. Seven years later and well on their way to conquering the pop music world, the band premiered their first movie, A Hard Day’s Night. The album and titular single dropped four days later.

Jim Wiseman’s Sky original documentary “Williams and Mansell: Red 5” is set for a debut on Sky Documentaries and Now on July 8. Featuring some of the biggest names in F1, it follows Nigel Mansell and the Williams Racing team’s rise to fame told through the eyes of his team, family and drivers including Jenson Button, Damon Hill and Karun Chandhok.
Mansell grew up in England in the 1960s, dreaming of becoming a professional race car driver, despite not having the financial means for it, while Frank Williams was realizing his own dream at the company he founded, Williams Grand Prix Engineering. The two joined forces, and after years of trying to win together, Mansell left to join Ferrari and then ultimately retired from racing after years of ups and downs, without ever winning the Formula One Drivers’ Championship. But seemingly overnight, he came out of retirement and re-joined Williams Racing.

Jurassic Park, based on Michael Crichton’s novel, spawned five blockbuster sequels as well as a multitude of spin-off games, toys, novels, and multiple animated television shows. It features a theme park housing de-extincted dinosaurs that break out of their confines and cause havoc. Underpinning the plot is clever genetic engineering that has allowed the Park’s scientists to assume they could control all aspects of the dinosaurs’ development, including their sex, much to their later horror when it becomes apparent such control was never possible. The film franchise has taken an average of over $1 billion dollars at the box office,...

There’s a little moment in The Truman Show which I think about a lot. Truman and his college pals are at a ‘50s-style dance in their tuxes, twisting to a twangy, yee-haw version of T Rex’s ‘20th Century Boy’ which sounds like it was recorded at Sun Records. It is, as a guy who’s very much not Marc Bolan sings, just like rock ‘n’ roll.
But it only clicked the second time I watched the film that it was a snapshot of the weirdness which bubbles underneath the surface of The Truman Show. Jim Carrey’s Truman couldn’t possibly be exposed to actual rock ‘n’ roll in case it fired up a spirit of rebellion and mistrust of authority. The shadowy forces behind his life-as-entertainment couldn’t possibly risk their asset becoming a fan of the Beatles and deciding to turn off his mind, relax and float downstream,...

It’s 30 years this June since Jurassic Park roared into theaters. The monster franchise now boasts six films: 1993’s Jp, 1997’s The Lost World, and 2001’s Jurassic Park III — all tracking paleontologist Alan Grant (Sam Neill), paleo-botanist Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) and “chaotician” Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) — and the 2015–22 reboot trilogy of Jurassic World, Fallen Kingdom, and Dominion, led by raptor trainer Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) and park exec Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard). (Credit: John Wilson / © Universal Pictures / courtesy Everett Collection) Which is the indomitable best? Dominion should reign supreme, since it united the stars of both eras. Sadly, the ludicrous script and paltry interaction between the two casts proved to be the worst thing to happen to dinosaurs since that meteor hit Earth. It’s clear the classic remains the champ (although World is a close second). It gave us a truly terrifying T. rex and, through groundbreaking effects,...

The "Guardians of the Galaxy" trilogy has reached its conclusion. There are unlikely to be more, with writer/director James Gunn leaving Marvel and joining Peter Safran to run the DC Universe. Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) will be back, as we learned at the end of "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," but the formation of the group we fell in love with has come and gone. The ragtag bunch of space misfits has certainly gotten into a lot of scrapes over the years, fighting villains like the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji), The Collector (Benicio del Toro), the Sovereign, Ego the Living Planet (Kurt Russell), and Thanos (Josh Brolin) alongside the Avengers.
Along the way, the Guardians have gotten all banged up during their fights, and some of the actors have as well. For instance, Chris Pratt's longtime stunt double Tony McFarr split his head open during a stunt on "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Kesha has shared her new album Gag Order. The fifth studio LP from the singer includes the previously-released singles “Eat the Acid,” “Fine Line,” and “Only Love Can Save Us Now.”
Kesha executive produced Gag Order alongside Rick Rubin, the legendary Def Jam co-founder and boardsman behind albums by the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Beastie Boys. In a statement, the artist described the “post-pop” record as the result of facing her emotional darkness head-on.
“Without the darkness there is no light. So I let my darkness have the light. I can’t fight the truth. Life is difficult and painful. It is for everyone,” Kesha said. “An artist doesn’t exist to make others happy. I believe an artist gives voice, motion, color to the emotions we all have. The good emotions, and the unmanageably fucking miserable ones.”

Linda Lewis, the British singer who scored a string UK solo hits in the 1970s but is most widely known as one of the era’s most in-demand backup singers who recorded with Yusuf Islam/Cat Stevens, David Bowie, T. Rex and Rod Stewart, died May 3 at her home. She was 72.
Her death was announced by her sister, singer Dee Lewis Clay. A cause of death was not specified, but Clay noted that her sister died peacefully.
Born Linda Ann Fredericks in West Ham, London, Lewis experienced her first brush with show business with a non-speaking acting role in the 1961 film A Taste of Honey and, in 1964, as a screaming fan of the Beatles in A Hard Day’s Night.
Making her most notable early appearance as a singer at the first Glastonbury Festival in 1970, Lewis would go on to have a lengthy, decades-long recording and performing career, with four top-...

The stars of Universal’s unofficial new-era monsterverse are facing off for Best Villain at the MTV Movie & TV Awards on May 7, giving this generation the next best thing to its very own “Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man.”
“M3GAN” came out in January and became 2023’s first bona fide success. The campy sci-fi slasher about a bereaved young girl’s high-tech doll becoming a killer robot scored $177 million against a $12-million budget. Universal followed the sleeper hit with February’s “Cocaine Bear,” in which a zany cast of characters must survive a 500-pound black bear that’s ingested a missing stash of narcotics. It earned the studio an additional $87 million but fell short of expectations. What will Cokey’s response to M3G’s upstaging of her be?
See Will ‘Black Panther’ or ‘Scream’ become just the 4th franchise to win multiple MTV Movie and TV Awards for Best Movie?...

Ringo Starr has never shied away from getting a little help from his friends. The drummer’s close buddies for many years included his Beatles bandmates, who assisted him in his solo career. George Harrison helped Ringo with solo project days after injuring himself on a mountain hike, for instance. Yet Ringo’s musician friends extended beyond The Beatles.

Ringo and Keith Moon had different drumming styles — understated elegance compared to bombastic bashing — yet their personalities meshed well. One of Ringo’s former girlfriends said he had an intimate relationship with Moon, meaning they could hold entire conversations without speaking.

It’s been a dreadful year — Ok, few years — for romcoms. This year gave us Shotgun Wedding, a J.Lo-starring smorgasbord about a destination wedding overrun by pirates; You People, Kenya Barris’ tone-deaf interracial-dating romcom whose big kiss was faked by CGI; and Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher’s Your Place or Mine, with leads that spent close to the entire movie on opposite sides of the country and had zero chemistry. Enter Ghosted, which is so dreadful it makes the aforementioned films look like When Harry Met Sally by comparison.

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” gives you a wholesome prankish druggy chameleonic video-game buzz; it’s also a nice, sweet confection for 6-year-olds. Historically, the proverbial problem with live-action movies based on video games — and “Super Mario Bros.,” a leaden dud released 30 years ago, had the dishonor of being the very first one — is that they jam-pack the screen with tropes and fights and characters and landscapes right out of the game, but when it comes to molding all that gimcrackery into, you know, a story, they lose the electronic pulse that made the game addictive. Digital animation is, and always should have been, the true cousin of video games (which are essentially computer fantasies that you control). And “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” takes full advantage of the sculptural liquid zap of the computer-animation medium. Yet it also has a fairy-tale story that’s good enough to get you onto its wavelength.

Paul McCartney calls one of his songs his “nod to comic books being high art.” The former Beatle loved reading comics and thought writing a song about them would be cool. Like other art, he felt comic book art deserved to be in galleries worldwide.
Paul McCartney | Evening Standard/Getty Images Paul McCartney said comic books were real art
In his book, The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present, Paul wrote that he read many comic books around 1975. As far as he was concerned, they were real art. He appreciated the skill – not to mention the perspective and imagination – it took to make the illustrations.
Paul has always thought pop art and comic book art are “near to madness.” He studied John Dryden in school and has always been struck by his lines: “Great wits are sure to madness near allied, And thin partitions do their bounds divide.”
Pop art reached its peak in the 1960s.

This is the way ... that some of the most famous "Star Wars" moments came to be. Given the multilayered lore behind the galaxy far, far away, it should come as no surprise that many of the plot decisions across the franchise's rich history are more than meets the eye.
George Lucas didn't freeze Han Solo in "The Empire Strikes Back" just for the fun of it. Darth Vader didn't show us the might of his evil in "Rogue One" for nothing. These and other favorite sequences have real-world strategies rooted in their fictional placement. As glorious as "Star Wars" is, it's not exempt from production snafus, casting challenges, and logistical puzzles that require solutions, which occasionally inform a story beat out of necessity.
From movies to TV to theme parks, we thought it'd be fun to highlight a few "Star Wars" plot decisions that were smarter than you think. Some are legend,...

Taylor Hawkins was sunshine incarnate. The late Foo Fighters drummer – also a songwriter, singer and multi-instrumentalist – had an unrivalled sense of positivity and joie de vivre. His megawatt smile could power a stadium show all of its own.
The first of two tribute concerts to Hawkins, who died aged 50 in March this year, does its utmost to summon that same energy. Gathered here at Wembley Stadium are some of Hawkins’s closest friends – the surviving Foos members, of course – family, collaborators and admirers, for a six-hour marathon of a show. Understandably, the mood that fills the 80,000-capacity venue is a strange one. Hawkins’s favourite songs are played ahead of the late-afternoon start time – Abba, Elo, George Michael – but no one feels like dancing just yet.

“Jurassic World Dominion” is upon us.
Billed as the last installment in the “Jurassic” “era” (because surely there will be more films), this latest entry in the franchise that began with Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece “Jurassic Park” back in 1993, is bigger and more dinosaur-stuffed than ever. “Jurassic World: Dominion” unites the two halves of the saga, as well – with newer characters like Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) and Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) partnering up with legacy characters Alan Grant (Sam Neill), Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) and Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum). Considering that they they are dealing with various ecological disasters, corporate conspiracies and villainous threats, there’s enough adventuring to go around.
But how does the whole thing come together? And where does the movie leave off? Read on to find contextualize that ending if you just caught up with the film on streaming.
Major spoilers for “Jurassic World: Dominion” follow.

Christian Bale is known for disappearing into his roles and "Velvet Goldmine" was no exception. Written and directed by Todd Haynes, the 1998 movie was named for David Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust" era B-side. Haynes is no stranger to music movies, having begun his career with the 1987 controversial short film, "Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story." He also helmed the incredible "I'm Not There" in 2007, which explored the various phases of Bob Dylan's career through a host of different actors. Haynes also made the excellent recent documentary about my all-time favorite band, "The Velvet Underground."
"Velvet Goldmine" chronicles the life of pop star Brian Slade (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), a Bowie-esque figure, as well as his love affair with the Iggy Pop-inspired Curt Wild (Ewan McGregor). Their performances are swoon-worthy — Meyers and McGregor both did their own singing in the movie. Plus, the film's fictional bands included members of Radiohead, Suede,...

In what is perhaps Jurassic Park‘s most famous scene, two cups of water vibrate in tune with the T. Rex’s colossal footsteps. It’s textbook Spielberg, really, as the tension begins to escalate long before the grand reveal – the esteemed filmmaker adopted a similar approach to Jaws, too, given the titular shark was totally submerged for the opening 40 minutes.
And just like the thud of the oncoming Tyrannosaurus, the first teaser trailer for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom draws near. As 2017 winds down and we begin to look back at the year in movies, Edgar Wright’s “Baby Driver” will no doubt be one of the biggest highlights. The action-crime film earned $107 million domestically, becoming Wright’s highest grossing film ever stateside, and critics went absolutely crazy for it. Edgar Wright never had a $100 million hit until “Baby Driver,” which crossed the milestone at the domestic box office on Sunday, August 13. The action movie has been breaking one record after another for Wright’s career. In just one week it made $39 million, more than any other movie in the director’s career, and now that it has climbed above $100 million it has grossed more money than Wright’s four previous films combined.
