The question you may be asking is ‘do we really need yet another take on Peter Pan? Ever since J.M. Barrie published his book “Peter And Wendy” in 1911 there have been countless film, TV, and stage versions of one stripe or another, starting with silents, and of course NBC’s live musical in the 50’s with Mary Martin, and later versions with Sandy Duncan, Cathy Rigby, and just a few years ago another NBC live attempt at it with Allison Williams. Of course there have been big screen spins, neither quite magical, like Joe Wright’s messy 2015 Pan and Spielberg’s overblown Hook with Robin Williams and Julia Roberts. Up to this moment even Broadway has a new Tony contender in the farcical take, Peter Pan Goes Wrong. But for me the one version that resonates the most, to this day, is the Disney 1953 animated feature classic.

The Oscars are a few days away, and I’m looking not only at the nominated actors’ performances this year, but at the stage careers that helped them develop and/or refine their skills to be eligible for Academy Awards. Half of this year’s Oscar nominees for acting were previously involved with Tony-nominated and other productions on Broadway.
For example, Ariana DeBose, the Academy Award Best Actress in a Supporting Role nominee, most-predicted on Gold Derby to win, cut her teeth on Broadway for a decade before she landed her nominated role as “Anita” in West Side Story. Her first Broadway job at age 21 was as a member of the ensemble of Bring It On in 2012, a Tony-nominated musical which required a lot of acrobatic dancing. Although it didn’t win any awards, Bring It On did have music and lyrics co-written by Lin Manuel Miranda with choreography by Andy Blakenbuehler.

Lin Manuel-Miranda’s Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical “Hamilton” is a strong contender for multiple Emmy nominations including for Best Variety Special (Taped) and for performers Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr., Daveed Diggs, Philippa Soo, Jonathan Groff and Christopher Jackson. Filmed over three days at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway including two live performances in 2016, “Hamilton” premiered on July 4, 2020 on Disney + and was a real respite from the lack of live theater due to Covid-19. The acclaimed presentation has already received several honors including the Producers Guild Award, Critics Choice, Costume Designers Guild and Cinema Audio Society.
Though musicals have been popular on television since the earliest days of the medium, it’s rare that the original Broadway cast gets to reprise their roles such as Manuel and company did with “Hamilton.’ The first time was in 1955 when the cast of the hit Broadway musical “Peter Pan” reunited soon after...

Anne Marie: Good evening, Lost Boys & Girls. Anne Marie here with the ever-youthful Margaret to live-blog NBC's Peter Pan Live! Or it would be live, but Los Angeles does everything on a delay, so instead it's a late-blog three hours after the original event began.
Margaret: Thank goodness they don't do this with the Oscars.
Anne Marie: A word on my credentials: Like millions of children, I was basically raised on the Mary Martin/Cyril Ritchard broadcast. Until I was six, I thought I was going to grow up to be Peter Pan. I've also been in it, designed for it, and seen the Cathy Rigby version (twice). Oh, and for actual credentials, I have a minor in theater and have stage managed in La for six years. I also liveblogged The Sound of Music Live! last year. This isn't my first trip to Neverland, is what I'm saying.

On December 4, NBC will try to recreate the ratings success of last year’s The Sound of Music with the family friendly Peter Pan Live!, starring Girls’ Allison Williams and Oscar winner Christopher Walken. The beloved musical with a book by Sir James M. Barrie, music by Mark “Moose” Charlap and Jule Styne, and lyrics by Carolyn Leigh, Betty Comden, and Adolph Green has a long history with the Peacock Network, airing its first telecast of the Broadway show starring Mary Martin in 1955. After its initial broadcast, NBC restaged the musical live again in 1956, and then in 1960, with subsequent rebroadcasts of the last production over the course of the next three decades.

That collective “whaaaaa?!” you heard around 9:40 a.m. this morning was the sound of the internet learning that NBC had cast Girls star Allison Williams as the title role in its upcoming production of Peter Pan Live.
On its surface, the decision seems, well, kind of bizarre. Think about it for a minute, though, and you may get where NBC is coming from: Williams is a practiced, experienced singer, and she’s also long harbored dreams of voicing a Disney character someday. (This Pan musical is different from Disney’s animated take, but it’s just as much of a family-friendly classic.

There has been a long history of girls playing the title role in "Peter Pan," so perhaps we shouldn't be surprised that NBC's "Peter Pan Live!" has found its leading lady on HBO's "Girls." NBC announced on Wednesday (July 30) morning that Allison Williams will play Peter Pan in the network's second live musical, which will air on December 4. Williams will appear opposite Christopher Walken, who was previously cast as the nefarious Captain Hook. "Allison Williams is a major find," blurb executive producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. "She will reinvent the iconic role of Peter Pan with her wit, her warmth, her dynamic flying and her wonderful musical abilities. The score will be sung beautifully and introduced to a whole new generation of families." Adds NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt, "We couldn’t be happier that Allison Williams is our Peter Pan. She’s a lovely rising star on the...

Suburban theaters dominated Los Angeles’ top theater honors Nov. 3, claiming Ovation Awards for best season and both categories of best musical. On a night when the regional companies claimed some of the L.A. Stage Alliance’s top awards, it was fitting that the moveable feast was held at the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse, a nearly century-old venue originally constructed for the performance of the epic “Mission Play.” Orange County-based 3-D Theatricals, which won five awards out of its 15 nominations, took home the statue for best musical for its production of “Parade,” while La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts, which had 24 nods, won for best season. “It reminds me of going to the Olympics,” said Cathy Rigby, a two-time Olympian whose McCoy Rigby Entertainment presents the shows at La Mirada. “It’s so subjective. We got lucky this year. We did have a great season.” La Mirada—whose producing...

As a nice Jewish girl, I’ve always loved Christmas and Chanukah and Festivus for the rest of us.
We lived on a “not quite” cul-de-sac that had an island in the middle of the street. On that island was a huge old fir tree, and every holiday season all the “cul-de-sac’ers” would decorate it for Christmas. Yep, it was “National Brotherhood Week” on Hodges Place – I always wondered if the street was named for Gil Hodges of the Brooklyn Dodgers. I doubt it – this was on Staten Island, not Brooklyn – but it would make a nice story, wouldn’t it?
Anyway, my brother and I didn’t feel cheated in mid-December – like every snotty, young, selfish Jewish kid, Chanukah meant eight days of presents. And latkes ; potato pancakes for the uninitiated. But truth to tell, we also thought the story of the oil in the Temple miraculously burning...

When I heard that Madison Square Garden would be hosting a production of Peter Pan this month, I knew I had to bring my kids to see it. Weve had an amazing year since I started covering family theatre for BroadwayWorld. My kids and I have seen a lot of great shows. But Peter Pan brings it all full circle for me, because long, long ago, in a time called the early 80s, Peter Pan was playing at the Lunt-Fontanne and it was the first Broadway show I ever saw. Back then, Peter was played by Sandy Duncan, one of the three iconic Peter Pans along with Mary Martin and of course Cathy Rigby.

Musical theater is filled with thrilling moments. Not the least of these is in Peter Pan, when Peter is trying to get the three Darling children to fly and young John finally utters the word Christmas. Suddenly they become airborne along with Peter. The scenery whisks away, the music swells and a starlit sky appears over the misty clouds and Peter and the Darlings fly with abandon in one of Jerome Robbins most stunning theatrical feats of choreography. With former gymnast Cathy Rigby playing Peter, there are some stunning aerial feats of derring-do as she whizzes through the stars and leads the three youngsters to Neverland. Even the most jaded theatergoer finds himself caught up in what has to be one the most exhilarating moments in the theater.

The Six Million Dollar Man - DVD Review and Contest
The thing about having a newborn which many people don’t appreciate, is the ample amount of time that you have late at night to watch something like this. Regular DVDs are mere appetizers compared to the hearty stew that was this atomic collection of the best action television of the 1970’s. I mean, there is no question that this is a series is a Must Buy for any fan of nostalgia television and who remembers this series for what it was: fun television.
Forget about the shows that had people boarding boats and falling in love or little men pointing at aircraft and announcing their arrival, what The Six Million Dollar Man...

9:56 pm: Watched Far from Heaven again last night to pre-soak my mind in autumnal-leafed alienation and lay down an early groove. Betty's dad as driving instructor—what could possibly go wrong? Nice of you to join us, Don, for the Jai alai meeting. I've always wanted to go to a Jai alai club—there's one in Delaware the Metroliner always whooshed by whenever I went back and forth to Baltimore. And of course there was a flash of Jai alai in the opening credits of Miami Vice. That pretty much exhausts my coin pouch of knowledge regarding this indoor sport that I gather attracts a lot of wagering. Don just wants to read his paper in peace and here's the father-in-law, unpacking the war memorabilia. "Bobby, it's a dead man's hat," he says of the spiked Prussian helmet and I have to say I side with Don. Kid runs...
