The Asylum — the independent film and TV studio known for its Sharknado franchise and zombie series Z Nation — celebrated its 25th anniversary with a bash on the Santa Monica Pier on Wednesday night.
But instead of helping blow out the candles, revelers were forced to deal with blown fuses as the Pier suffered a power outage for close to 15 minutes. When The Hollywood Reporter arrived on the scene at 9:30 p.m., the entire Pier was pitch black while hundreds of guests remained in place at the event, which took over Pacific Park, the oceanside amusement park.
Guests were still allowed to check-in to the event as security suggested the outage would be temporary. And they were right. Shortly before 9:40 p.m., the lights came back on and guests like Bai Ling, Kristanna Loken, Geoff Meed, Cindy Busby, Carlos Ramirez, Terry Woodberry,...

“It used to be cool to hate us, and now it’s become cool to like us.”
So says Paul Bales, COO of The Asylum, the B-movie flag-bearers who have cornered — in somewhat notorious fashion — one of the most beloved, derided, schlocky and, well, inexpensive rungs of Hollywood’s lower echelons.
This year, The Asylum has its 25th anniversary, marking a quarter-century of super-prolific, low-budget filmmaking, unashamed studio piggybacking and some of the most comically ludicrous concepts (and posters) ever made. And sharks. Truck loads of sharks (so many it’s difficult to actually pin down an exact figure).

The production companies and executive producers behind Z Nation have been placed on the WGA’s Strike/Unfair List for allegedly failing to pay more than $5.1 million in residuals, pension and health contributions, and interest owed to the writers of the former series.
The zombie-apocalypse drama aired for five seasons on Syfy and now is streaming on Netflix.
The WGA says Z Nation’s executive producers David Rimawi, David Michael Latt, Paul Bales and Steve Graham and its production entities – The Global Asylum, Go2 Digital Media and Go2 Z 3 LLC, Go2 Z 4 LLC and Go2 Z 5 LLC – have failed to honor an arbitrator’s decision from October in which the companies and Graham were ordered to pay $4,832,748 in unpaid residuals and pension and health contributions, plus interest. “Seven months later,” the guild said, “the writers have still not been paid, and interest continues to accrue, which is why more than $5.1 million is now owed.

Thursday is D-Day, the 75th anniversary of the day when Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy, France, to fight the Nazis in World War II. To commemorate the memory of those lost there, Cinedigm is releasing a feature film with a handful of actors who know a thing or two about fighting.
“D-Day” stars Mma fighters Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture (Couture is also a former U.S. Army Sergeant) alongside Weston Cage Coppola (Nicolas Cage’s son) and Jesse Kove in their action-heavy take on the Battle of Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944.
“These beaches are vital to winning this war. Thousands of lives depend on it,” Liddell says in the trailer.

Forget yesterday's pre-Emmy Award party, Tara Reid attended last night's (August 21) true primetime event - the Sharknado 2: The Second One movie premiere.
The 38-year-old actress, who reprises her role as April Wexler for the Sharknado sequel, arrived in a plunging neon pink crop top and matching high-waisted skirt for the Asylum & Fathom Events screening at the Regal cinema.
She was joined by co-star and estranged on-screen husband Ian Ziering, as well as producers David Garber, David Latt and David Rimawi.
Sharknado 2 made its SyFy debut on July 30, and proved a smash hit in the ratings with approximately 3.90m viewers and a 1.3 Nielsen ratings score.
The tongue-in-cheek disaster movie, which sees the Sharknado hit New York City, features the likes of Vivica A. Fox, Kari Wuhrer, Kelly Osbourne and Judah Friedlander.

The Creative Coalition's and The Asylum's the Passion Project Program is an extension of The Creative Coalition’s Spotlight Initiative, “P3” which will encourage and support passion projects in independent film. The program will kickoff tonight, January 18th, at an entertainment industry leadership dinner in Park City, Utah during the upcoming Film Festival.
The Creative Coalition created the Spotlight Initiative in 2008 to champion the art and craft of independent filmmaking with a unique and specific goal in mind: make a positive difference in the world by encouraging a film’s message to reach beyond the movie screen to the grassroots.
The Asylum, which just celebrated its 15th anniversary, is a motion picture production, financing, and worldwide distribution studio. With facilities in Burbank, California, The Asylum fully finances and produces 20-25 titles per year and has released over 350 titles to date.
“With our line of production financing and a new theatrical strategy, The Asylum is looking to supplement its fast-paced development process with more fully developed motion picture and series properties, including adaptations of existing material. Film projects with budgets of up to $1.5 million dollars will be considered,” said David Rimawi, partner at The Asylum.
“We are proud of The Asylum for being the first production company to participate in The Creative Coalition’s Spotlight Initiative Passion Project Program. The Asylum is truly an example of a company that believes in supporting the arts,” commented CEO of The Creative Coalition Robin Bronk. “From Napoleon Dynamite to Paranormal Activity – some of the most successful films in the indie world have been made for under a million dollars. We look forward to the success of these future selected film projects.”
***This is an invitation-only dinner. All press must be credentialed in advance. For press credential approval, please email rridinger@mprm.com. ***

Air Collision, the best action film ever directed by a woman (for The Asylum), has a great ensemble cast and comes from a really innovative company; The Asylum, like Roger Corman’s various studios, is game to give a woman a chance to direct a genre film as well as to cast all ethnicities and both sexes for all kinds of roles. In short, I love The Asylum.
Director Liz Adams had one award-winning short film under her belt (Side Effect) when she went in for an interview at The Asylum. She was originally asked to write the fast-paced script for the then-unnamed action movie, but was offered the chance to submit herself as the director as well. “I threw my hat into the ring to direct and they gave me a shot,” she says. The Asylum is ready to spread more of their mental illness with their film Born Bad. This latest horror flick is from director Jared Cohn (Revenants) and stars Meredith Monroe, Bonnie Dennison, Michael Welch, Gerald Webb and Bill Oberst Jr. In the film, much like 1996's Fear, an innocent girl brings home a seemingly charming boyfriend. However, this new beau is more serial killer than companion. Strangely, both Fear and Born Bad share similar plot points and The Asylum is known for knocking off big blockbusters. This reviewer has not seen the film, so horror fans will have to make the final call when Born Bad releases on DVD November 8th. Enjoy or throw stones at the film's trailer below.

Here is your early warning that The Asylum will be trying to capitalize on another blockbuster release. This time Darren Lynn Bousman's 11-11-11 is being clearly copied to swindle wayward buyers out of their hard earned dollars. The Asylum's doppelganger this time is 11/11/11 and unbelievably, they have another title copying Bousman's film called 11/1/11. Notice the removal of one digit here folks. All three films involve themes of a spiritual apocalypse, with The Asylum's version much lower budgeted.
This reviewer would love to interview someone at The Asylum to find out how well these copies perform financially. Apparently they are successful as this film production and distribution company has created dozens of films that copy blockbustes. To test your film knowledge, try to identify the films copied in the following titles: Battle of Los Angeles, Paranormal Entity, Transmorphers, Titanic II, The Terminators and The Day the Earth Stopped. Today is a good day to be a zombie fan folks, as The Asylum and director Nick Lyon (Species: The Awakening) have debuted the first teaser trailer for Zombie Apocalypse. There are make-up effects, pitched battles and actress Taryn Manning in a shower scene, all in under two minutes. The clip shows solid production values and The Asylum, from the promotional material, seems to be backing a winner here based on the story and the cast. Also starring are Ving Rhames (Dawn of the Dead), Gary Weeks (Deadland), Johnny Pacar (The Dead Undead) and Lesley-Ann Brandt (InSight).
This title will debut on television first through the SyFy Network. The first air date is October 29th at 9:00pm and this is just two weeks after the premiere of "The Walking Dead." Perhaps there is a competitive air afoot. Then, not much later, The Asylum will release this title on DVD December 27th.

I kind of figured that mockbuster wizards The Asylum would have a low-budget, direct-to-video response to “Fast Five”, but for some reason, I never really thought to properly and thoroughly investigate my suspicions. Below you’ll find a trailer for “200 Mph”, which quietly landed on DVD and VOD on April 26th, 2011. Directed by Cole McKay and starring David Michael Latt, David Rimawi, and Paul Bales, the film follows a young racer as he is “plunged into the harrowing world of illegal street racing, risking his life as he races with a vengeance”. Sounds like a paint-by-numbers winner to me. The kicker: the screenwriter’s name is Thunder Levin. How could you possibly go wrong? Curious parties are encouraged to check out the trailer embedded below.

What if you wanted to knock-off Jonathan Liebesman's Battle: Los Angeles and you only had 1% of the budget? Well, you would still have 700K and you could name your film something very similar like Battle of Los Angeles. This is what The Asylum is known for and 700K is not the budget of their latest.
In 2007, The Asylum tried to capitalize on the blockbuster I Am Legend, with I Am Omega. The result was a decent film (I Am Omega Review). The Asylum has copied other looming big budget films like Transformers, with Transmorphers and James Cameron's Titanic with Shane Van Dyke's forgettable Titanic II (A Titanic II Review). How will Battle of Los Angeles fare? That depends on movie watchers inability to decipher the good, Battle: Los Angeles from the arguably bad, Battle of Los Angeles. The first trailer for the latter is below, courtesy of Quiet Earth.

The mega madness continues at the American Film Market, but this one is '80s themed. The motto at The Asylum seems to be: go big or go home. This movie production company specializes in enlarging benign ocean creatures and turning the sea into a battlefield. The latest animal to get super-sized is the whale in The Asylum's 2010: Moby Dick. The Asylum is up to its usual hijinks with the science fiction thriller Battle of Los Angeles. The Asylum is know for their instant classics like Transmorphers, Milf, 8213: Gacy House and many more. Their films are often seriously toned satires and their latest film looks unusually similar to Jonathan Liebesman's World Invasion: Battle La, which was originally titled Battle Los Angeles. Coincidentally, both films release very near the same date, with the Battle of Los Angeles releasing first (February 22nd). Fans of the bizarre can check out another still from The Asylum's latest below and viewers are highly encouraged to view all of the The Asylum's photos for this project, as there is a Michelle Rodriguez lookalike. More details inside.
The in-depth synopsis for Battle of Los Angeles (sarcasm, wink-wink, nudge, nudge):
"In February 1942 Us forces engaged an unidentified flying object above Los Angeles. Now almost 70 years later,...

The mockbuster genre has spawned from a long and fine tradition of exploitation cinema. There’s films such as Eric Forsberg’s Mega Piranha that are finding audiences across the world desperate for some hokey and ludicrous fun. The old adage that ‘nobody sets out to make a bad movie’ has been turned upside down.
The collective experience of watching a dreadful film, whether on the cinema screen or with friends, is turning into something of a cult phenomenon. Laced with irony, but played straight and with some seriously deranged ideas, the mockbuster series might become a new art form unto itself. Are they the product of counter-cinema or just bad film-making? Like Larry Kaufman’s Troma outfit, these new breed of movies are marketed as ‘so bad they’re good’, and it works.
Could the mockbuster be the evil twin of the Hollywood blockbuster set to wreck havoc of its own?...

I first interviewed Eric Forsberg back in August of 2006 in anticipation of the release of Snakes on a Train. Now here we are in April of 2010, and I am interviewing him again in anticipation of Mega Piranha, another killer animal mockbuster he's made for The Asylum.
I'm feeling a sense of déjà vu. With Mega Piranha debuting on Syfy April 10th and then hitting DVD shelves on April 27th, now seemed like a good time for a lighthearted return engagement with Mr. Forsberg discussing the majesty of Mega Piranha, what it's like working for the mockbuster masters at The Asylum, and his past, present, and future projects.
Foy: When we first spoke back in 2006, it was in anticipation of the release of Snakes on a Train. Now here we are in 2010 speaking in anticipation of the release of Mega Piranha. Is there no escaping the Asylum?
Eric: No, there isn’t,...
