Crane Wilbur’s The Bat is a murder mystery starring Agnes Moorehead and Vincent Price—but the real mystery is how Hollywood managed to pair these diabolically funny entertainers in only one film. They shared little to no screen time in 1951’s The Adventures of Captain Fabian and 1957’s The Story of Mankind, but in Wilbur’s mild-mannered horror show, Moorehead and Price are toe to toe—and generate enough chemistry for a dozen lovably corny crime thrillers just like The Bat.
Despite Price’s presence it’s Moorehead’s show; she plays Cornelia Van Gorder, a prolific mystery writer in the mode of Mary Roberts Rinehart—who, not coincidentally, wrote The Circular Staircase, the source material for the The Bat. As the no-nonsense Van Gorder, Moorehead’s steely...

Cinematography by Joseph Biroc

Released during the dog days of summer in August of 1959, The Bat was an air-conditioned summer treat for the eight year-old unprepared for a blood and thunder horror movie – even if this mild thriller does star that consummate killer Vincent Price and Agnes Moorehead as a novelist who dabbles in murder – the more gruesome, the better.
Price plays Malcolm Wells, a small-town doctor who’s just witnessed the confession of one John Fleming, a larcenous bank president who’s embezzled a fortune from his own vault. Knowing an opportunity when he sees it, Wells promptly shoots Fleming and sets off to find the loot, hidden in a creaky mansion called The Oaks. Waiting for him is Cornelia Van Gorder (Moorehead), a specialist in pulp fiction unaware that the...

The Warner Archive has released two more volumes in their “Forbidden Hollywood” series. Marijuana, Lesbians -And-William Powell speaks Yiddish!
Forbidden Hollywood-Volumes 4 & 5 have been released by Warner Archive Collection. I have been a big fan of this series since The VHS/laser disc days. These pre-code films are a hell-of-a-lot-of-fun to watch, and no one did them better than Warner Brothers. As my cinema guru , Tom Dillon ["The Sage of Grammercy Park"] once said: “You wanna take a shower after watching a good pre-Cceighte Warner Bros. film!” These 8 films are great examples of that genre.
Volume 4-all 1932
Jewell Robbery-William Powell and Kay Francis star in this story of a high society jewel thief who uses marijuana, amongst other things, to get what he wants. Directed by William Dieterle
Lawyer Man- William Powell and Joan Blondell. Powell stars as a lawyer who workds his way up from the lower east side to Park Ave.

Sir Ian McKellen and Stephen Fry appear to have been successful in their campaign to save a British pub, called The Hobbit - and the two actors have offered to help the owners pay a yearly fee to keep the place open.
Lawyers representing the Saul Zaentz Company - the American firm which owns the copyright to a number of J.R.R. Tolkien's works - ordered the owners of the Southampton, England pub to change the name or face legal action.
The pub has been trading as The Hobbit for more than 20 years and landlady Stella Mary Roberts insisted she didn't have the funds to fight the legal threat.
McKellen, who played wizard Gandalf in The Lord of The Rings movies, and Fry, who will appear in the upcoming adaptation of The Hobbit, threw their support behind a campaign to keep the bar open, and now the pair have put their money where their mouths are by promising to pay the license fee, reportedly about $100 (£65)-per-year, needed to prevent further legal issues.
Taking to his Twitter.com page, Fry writes, "Ian McKellen and I v (very) pleased that The Hobbit pub appears to be safe. Between his Fb (Facebook) and my tweet I hope we helped common sense prevail."...

All publicity is supposed to be .good. publicity. So why are Hollywood attorneys going after a Southampton pub named The Hobbit over copyright infringement? Isn.t the name a standing advertisement for Peter Jackson.s upcoming two-part epic? Not to lawyers for Saul Zaentz Company, who . according to the BBC . are threatening to sue pub owner Stella Mary Roberts and demanding she immediately remove any references to Jrr Tolkien.s characters because they own the legal rights to the Lord of the Rings brand. .I can.t fight Hollywood,. the owner told the BBC, and therefore must remove all Hobbit references, including the pub.s name, which has been in place for more than 20 years. Roberts. establishment sells cocktails named after Frodo and Gandalf. She also put Elijah Woods. likeness on the pub.s customer loyalty card. To implement the changes would cost thousands of dollars, Roberts estimates. A Facebook...

Lawyers representing the Saul Zaentz Company (Szc), the American firm which owns the copyright to a number of J.R.R. Tolkien's works, have ordered the pub in Southampton, England to change its name or face legal action.
Fry, who stars in the new movie adaptation of Jrr Tolkien's book, has now loaned his support to a campaign to save the venue after hearing of the owners' plight.
In a post on Twitter.com, he writes, "Honestly, Save The Hobbit, sometimes I'm ashamed of the business I'm in. What pointless, self-defeating bullying."
The pub has been trading as The Hobbit for more than 20 years and landlady Stella Mary Roberts insists she doesn't have the funds to fight the legal threat, saying, "We were absolutely stunned. It was completely unexpected, we never intended to infringe anyone's copyright.

A pub that's been happily trading under the name The Hobbit has come under legal fire from the company behind the upcoming films...
Here's a bit of a crappy story. After 20 years of trading, Southampton pub The Hobbit faces closure. Not because of the tough economic climate, but because the Saul Zaentz company has decided to flex its legal muscles and sent it at a cease and desist order.
Owner Stella Mary Roberts has been told to rebrand at prohibitive cost by the end of May or face legal action. She has been quoted as stating, ‘’we just haven’t got the resources to fight it.’’
Sometimes you have to wonder just what goes through the minds of big entertainment companies – this pub has been plying its trade long before any film trilogy even appeared on-screen, has never been threatened in this way before, but suddenly there’s a new...

Is this the work of Sauron? J.R.R. Tolkien fans may be giddy about Peter Jackson's upcoming "Lord of the Rings" prequel, "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," but not everyone is welcoming the news with open arms. According to the BBC, a pub in Southampton called The Hobbit is being threatened with copyright infringement by lawyers of the Saul Zaentz Company, the group that owns the rights to Tolkien's "Rings" and "Hobbit." In addition to its name, The Hobbit features such Middle Earth touches like character-inspired drinks (the Gandalf is made of Vs Blue, vodka, peach schnapps and lemonade) and signs. The company has asked that all Tolkien references be removed from the pub. "Are we doing any harm? I don't think so. We're bringing people to the books and the stories who haven't heard of J.R.R. In our writers' favourite film series, Jonathan Glancey is bewitched by the silver-screen sorcery of Laurel and Hardy's 1937 classic
Love this review or is it just another fine mess? Post your own take here or enjoy a little comedy tit-for-tat below
Mary Roberts's father has died, leaving the deed of a gold mine to the innocent young Southern belle (played by Rosina Lawrence), who is working as a skivvy in Mickey Finn's Palace, a raucous saloon bar in Brushwood Gulch. Stan and Ollie have been charged with delivering this precious document to her. They are readily gulled into giving it to Lola Marcel (Sharon Lynne), a hard, bottle-blonde vaudeville singer pretending to be Mary. Realising their mistake, they set about – calamitously, of course – getting it back.
Not much of a plot, I suppose, but enough to spin Way Out West into an hour-long feature film I have watched time and again.

Less than a week worth of recovering from the Sundance Film Festival, and we are already looking forward to our next, big film fest coverage. That would be the South by Southwest Film Festival held annually in Austin, Texas. Last year, Scott and I brought you all kinds of coverage from the Lone Star State, and this year doesn’t look to be much different.
With that, the announcement came last night of the feature films that will be playing at the SXSW Film Festival. Previous announcement were already made about films like Cold Weather, Electra Luxx, Hubble 3D, Lemmy, Saturday Night, and The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights making their debut. Kick-ass was recently announced as the opening night film, as well.
Among the other films being presented this year are some Sundance darlings, a few, highly anticipated premieres, and MacGruber.

Late yesterday the SXSW Fim Festival, which runs from March 12-20 in Austin, TX, announced the full lineup of films that will be screening at this year’s event. And baby, it’s quite a list. Mixing big name films with intimate indie gems, the sheer number of films and the vast array of talented filmmakers is sure to be a hit with attendees and critics alike.
This lineup includes premieres of studio films such as Universal’s MacGruber, Lionsgate’s teen superhero actioneer Kick-Ass and smaller films like Tim Blake Nelson’s Leaves of Grass, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs, Michel Gondry’s The Thorn in the Heart and Steven Soderbergh’s And Everything Is Going Fine. With so many films to watch, it will be very difficult to find time to seem them all during the events nine days. But hell, we’re going to try.

The 2010 SXSW Film Festival and Conference has announced its initial slate of titles. The list is rife with hot world premieres (Kick-Ass), films fresh from Sundance (The Runaways, Cyrus), hot titles from the 2009 editions of Tiff and Cannes that haven't had much U.S. play (Enter the Void, Dogtooth, Trash Humpers), interesting documentaries (Lemmy, The People v. George Lucas) and much, much more. Simon Rumley's Red, White & Blue, which has received much praise on Twitch based on its Iffr screenings, will have its North American premiere.
Midnight programming courtesy of Fantastic Fest is also back with titles like Higanjima, Monsters, Serbian Film, Outcast, and a yet to be announced special film. Keep eye out for SXSW coverage at Twitch, but for now, pursue the massive list below (descriptions courtesy of SXSW).
