Fran Drescher is on a hero’s journey.
I know because she told me.
We talked on Monday for about an hour as the actors’ strike moved into a second week. So far, it’s been very dramatic. Last Thursday, the SAG-AFTRA president gave her version of Shakespeare’s Henry V’s St. Crispins Day speech with “we happy few” replaced by all American workers via “I think that the whole world is looking at us right now, because human beings in all different walks of life are being replaced by robots.” The speech launched a thousand labor-supporting memes and left reporters wondering if “The Nanny” was the new Norma Rae. Drescher carried the mojo into the first day of picketing on Friday when she called Disney CEO Bob Iger a medieval land baron for discourse launched from his Sun Valley Summer Camp.
This was all a reversal of fortune...

Apple is turning its lens on the Iron Horse.
The iPhone maker/streamer is teaming with Universal Television and Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video to adapt author Jonathan Eig’s book, Luckiest Man: The Life and Death of Lou Gehrig, as a scripted television series, sources say.
Dan Kay (the upcoming Spider & Jessie) is on board to co-write the script alongside the author, Eig, and serve as showrunner on the drama, which is currently in the development stages. Eig will be credited as a co-exec producer. Peter Farrelly (Apple’s The Greatest Beer Run Ever) is attached as an exec producer and would direct the pilot should the untitled drama move forward. Michael Uslan, David Uslan and Charles Wessler will also exec produce alongside Saturday Night Live mastermind Michaels and his son, Broadway Video creative exec Eddie Michaels.
It’s unclear if Major League Baseball will be involved in the potential series.

HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher” will be off again this week as the show continues its safety protocols following the host’s Covid-19 diagnosis.
Maher revealed last week that he’d tested positive for the coronavirus during the show’s routine testing process. It was expected he’d need to take at least two weeks off before returning to the program.
Maher, who is vaccinated and asymptomatic, is now slated to return to his HBO slot on May 28. Instead of running a new “Real Time” episode this week, HBO is filling the slot with an encore of the fifth episode of “Mare of Eastown.”
Asymptomatic carriers of the coronavirus can still pass it on to other people in close quarters. One of the dangers of being an asymptomatic carrier is the person with the virus often doesn’t realize they have it until they’re tested, and by then,...

HBO has canceled this week’s “Real Time With Bill Maher” after the host tested positive for Covid-19 as part of the show’s regular screening process.
“The Friday, May 14th taping of Real Time with Bill Maher has been cancelled,” HBO said in a statement. “Bill tested positive during weekly staff Pcr testing for Covid. He is fully vaccinated and as a result is asymptomatic and feels fine.”
On the schedule for Friday’s show was an in-studio interview with “StarTalk” host Neil deGrasse Tyson and a panel discussion with “Hardcore History” host Dan Carlin and Max Brooks, a senior resident fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Brent Scowcroft Center on International Security and a nonresident fellow at the Modern War Institute at West Point.

“Abby’s is filmed in front of a live outdoor audience,” co-star Neil Flynn says at the start of each episode of this charming new NBC comedy about an unlicensed bar run by the title character (Natalie Morales) in her backyard. (It’s shot on the same studio back lot as Wisteria Lane from Desperate Housewives.) The announcement signals the DNA of the series: a hybrid of old-school and new-school sitcom aesthetics.
On the one hand, Abby’s has that live audience, which it feeds with your standard set-up/punchline rhythms.

Today I begin a new series that combines my fondness for film with the joy I have of being a parent. Like most geek dads or dads in general I am eager to share the things I have a passion for with my son. Growing up I can remember my dad doing the same. As a proud Air Force veteran with a father who made his living working for the Rail Road my dad grew up with his own passions and hobbies. Some of my greatest memories as a child are the times I spent seeing my dad gushing at train museums, getting lost in amazement at air shows, or simply try to gather as much information as possible about World War II. Now as I am closing in on the two year mark of being a dad I am beginning to brainstorm on what movies are must sees for my son.

Donald Trump has yet again been hit with major media backlash.
On Tuesday, Seth Meyers banned the presumptive Republican nominee from appearing on his NBC talk show, Late Night with Seth Meyers.
Meyers' decision came after Trump banned The Washington Post from attending his campaign events over a Post headline that seemed to suggest Trump had linked President Obama to the Orlando nightclub shootings.
"Yesterday, in the wake of the shooting in Orlando, Donald Trump gave a speech on terrorism in which he continued his Cal Ripken-esque streak of making inflammatory statements without any evidence whatsoever," Meyers said on Tuesday's episode of Late Night.

With 2014 rapidly approaching, most of us here at ComicBookMovie.com are breathing sighs of relief to be moving on to the next potentially bar-raising installment of the genre. This year has been the most controversial in terms of assessing which films were worth the time it took to watch or the money they took in. Regardless of what side of the fence you're standing on, you'd probably agree that they all had room for improvements; just to different degrees. The truest test is observing how each movie will be remembered throughout history. So, I thought I'd use this time to take a deeper look into the rearview, and, reminisce on what was and what could have been long before 2013. The year is 1982, and, much like any other year, the stage is set for new beginnings. The Commodore 64 home computer is released in Las Vegas, Cal Ripken Jr. plays the first...

If there’s one universal language that we all speak, it’s Sports. No matter where you live, or who you are, the one common denominator that we can all agree on is that we all love sports. Whether it’s a particular sport, a team, or a player, everybody has their favorite. Debating about sports just might be funner than debating about wrestling, but I digress.
Throughout my life time I have seen a lot of holy sh*t moments in sports. Things that we’ll never see again and moments that we probably take for granted. The purpose of this article is to relive some of those memories. Whether they’re personal to you or personal to your grandparents, sports transcends time and that’s what makes them so beautiful.
I hope this article can bring back some memories and maybe even put a smile on your face.

5-Second Films has grown an audience thanks to its status as the Cal Ripken, Jr. of YouTube channels. 5Sf has posted a new video every weekday for the past five years, and its creative team is hoping to turn that consistency into a feature-length project. 5Sf has launched a Kickstarter campaign for Dude Bro Party Massacre 3, a film based on one of the group's super-short comedy videos. The Dude Bro Party Massacre 3 episode was released in 2009. It features an inverted slasher film plot so ridiculous that 5Sf made a full trailer for it in 2010. Now, should the group raise $200,000 by July 1st, it will release a 5,400-second (i.e. 90 minutes) collage of dudes, bros, parties, and plenty of massacres. Dude Bro Party Massacre will not be 5Sf's first brush with a longer format. The group currently releases sketches on the Uproxx Video YouTube channel, most of which run for several minutes.

It's the end of an era.
Just like "Seinfeld" in its day and "The Sopranos" years later, some shows deserve to be taken apart postmortem, analyzed and re-experienced for the sheer enjoyment of it. These shows are so brilliant that their focus isn't ratings or stats -- it's that they're in our cultural bloodstream. Such was "30 Rock," which last night aired its last episode after seven seasons (point most eloquently made by Tracy Jordan: "Thank you America, that's our show! Not a lot of people watched it but the joke's on you, because we got paid anyway!”)
Granted, what made "30 Rock" was the superb combination of recurring talent: Tina Fey's Liz Lemon, Alec Baldwin's Jack Donaghy, Tracy Morgan's Tracy Jordan, Jane Krakowski's Jenna Maroney, and Jack McBrayer's Kenneth Parcell. But some of the best episodes owe it to the celebrity stars who waltzed through those NBC doors.
It's the breakfast of champions, or the champion of breakfasts: Ever since we can remember, Wheaties cereal boxes have been synonymous with celebrity athletes. Its covers have been graced by the likes of Cal Ripken Jr., Mary Lou Retton and Michael Jordan (who has appeared on the box a whopping 18 times -- more than any other athlete).
But the first athlete to appear on a Wheaties box was actually from the earlier part of the century -- baseball great Lou Gehrig in 1934 (he appeared on the back, not on the front). Wheaties eventually made the shift to featuring sports players on their covers with decathlon gold medalist Bob Richards in 1958, not to mention Bruce Jenner (yes, that Bruce Jenner), who appeared on the box in 1977 and was one of the first official Wheaties spokespeople.

Legendary Baltimore Orioles baseball star Cal Ripken Jr.'s mother, Violet Ripken, is safe after being abducted Tuesday (July 24) morning.
Baltimore County police say the 74-year-old woman was forced from her Aberdeen, Md., home by a gunman who held her captive in her own car for nearly 24 hours.
According to police, Vi Ripken was found with her hands bound in the backseat of her silver Lincoln Continental just after 6 a.m. today (July 25). Cal Ripken, an All-Star shortstop and third baseman, was apparently never contacted by the kidnapper, authorities say, and they are still looking for a motive in the case.
"At this time I can say we know of no ransom demand," Aberdeen Police Chief Henry Trabert told reporters. The suspect reportedly gave no indication that he knew his victim's son is the Major League Baseball icon, also known as Iron Man because he holds the league record for most consecutive games played.

Jason Schwartzman, star of "Rushmore," "Scott Pilgrim" and "Bored to Death," is just as excited about his stuff as you are. However, he likes to ramble -- a lot. I don't mean for that to come off as a negative, it's just something that he likes to do. When you ask him a question, he often digresses into complete randomness until he more or less arrives at the answer you're looking for. This happened several times during our wide-ranging discussion, on everything from tee-shirts to magazines to movies to music (he was once the drummer for the band Phantom Planet, whose biggest hit, “California,” was the theme song to “The O.C.”). Jason is also very passionate about the projects he works on, so much so that he's been participating in press for his newest film, “Moonrise Kingdom,” despite being in it for a grand total of about 10 minutes. (Part of...

In honor of Moneyball's success, as well as the stirring 2011 Major League Baseball playoffs, Movie Fanatic has decided to anoint the Top 10 Baseball Movies of all Time. Many times, the drama on the field of the Major League Baseball playoffs and World Series provide drama Hollywood could never recreate, but here still are pieces of celluloid that capture the power and prominence baseball has over our culture.
10. Field of Dreams
Kevin Costner clearly has a passion for baseball given the films he’s made -- Field of Dreams, For the Love of the Game and Bull Durham -- but his focus on the past in Field of Dreams is what makes it so endearing. So few times in current society do we pay respect to the past. Field of Dreams isn’t simply a reminder of the greatness of baseball’s past, it reminds us that the lives we...

The twisted mind of Ron Purtee never stops working. Creating Becoming Undead and The Social Media Massacre simply wasn't enough for this iron horse of horror (if he keeps up this pace we'll soon have to refer to him as the Cal Ripken of rippage!). His newest offering is a short entitled Love Is Not Enough and, as we can expect from all Purtee's work, it cuts right to the heart (and I mean that in the most literal sense possible).
Written and directed by Purtee, Love Is Not Enough is a unique look at infidelity. And as horror fans, we all know that rubbing your neighbor's rhubarb is never a good idea. From old Tales From The Crypt stories to Fatal Attraction, horror has never been kind to the unfaithful, and Purtee's new film is no different.
Shot in a unique style with a voice-over providing narration instead of traditional dialogue,...

Congratulations, Derek Jeter.
Not only did the New York Yankees shortstop become the 28th player in Major League Baseball to make it to 3,000 hits -- he did it with a home run.
Jeter became the first Yankee to achieve the feat during the July 9 game against the Tampa Bay Rays, right at home in Yankee Stadium.
Watching from the stands was longtime girlfriend, "Friday Night Lights" alum and future "Charlie's Angels" star Minka Kelly.
He joins the ranks of such baseball greats as Cal Ripken Jr. and Honus Wagner as one of the only to reach the number. And he can now boast the extra distinction of being one of just 6 players to do so in 17 seasons or fewer.
The big 3-0-0-0 was Jeter's third home run of the season. ...

I'm not sure where to begin. Growing up, most of us had people we looked up to or admired. Teachers or coaches. Celebrities or athletes. Naturally, most of my influences were in the world of sport. People like Kirk Muller, Cal Ripken Jr., Paul Molitor, Mario Lemieux and of course Bret 'The Hitman' Hart, 'The British Bulldog' Davey Boy Smith, 'Mr. Perfect' Curt Henning, 'Ravishing' Rick Rude and Randy 'Macho Man' Savage. With today's news, the last four on that list are all gone. TMZ [1] broke the news that 58 year old Randy Savage (Poffo) sufferred a heart attack while driving his 2009 Jeep Wrangler. He lost control, it went over a concrete median and crashed head on into a tree. Fortunately, his wife escaped the accident with only minor injuries. Savage had an amazing career. Six time World Champion, an Intercontinental Champion and one of half of one of the greatest tag teams of all time,...

We’re into Episode 10 of Top Chef All-Stars, entitled “Lock Down”, which starts exactly how you’d expect something called “Lock Down” to start – with Sesame Street characters popping up and giving Tiffany a heart attack: “Oh thank God – for a second there, I thought it was three actual monsters.” I love that the Quickfire starts with Padma whimsically rhyming her sentences, and Dale’s like “Is Padma speaking in tongues? What could Possibly be going on here??” Do the contestanchefsts still not realize that when Padma does something unusual (or anything), she’s about to introduce a challenge? “I think she just went insane and Bravo’s filming it and I guess there’s no Quickfire today” – Every Chef. Tell them about our Quickfire, Cookie Monster! (I’ll bet they have to bake monsters): The chefs have to bake cookies for guest judges Cookie Monster, Elmo, and Telly...

Danny Fucking Boyle. Wow. I admire the hell out of Danny Boyle, because he never makes the same kind of film twice, and yet still manages to leave an indelible mark to let you know that you are watching one of his films. It would be trite to list his canon, but sit back and roll it around in your mouth for a moment, the fact that the same man each one of these films. And now, he's moved on to doing what's basically a biopic in retelling the harrowing exploits of Aron Ralston in 127 Hours. Only to assume that Danny Boyle would dare make a bland straightforward biopic kind of disavows his fascinating ability to craft films. Because he very well might do that one day, his level of talent is that fucking insane. For a film that's primarily about a young man stuck under a boulder in the...

This is a Recap of Boardwalk Empire Season 1 Episode 7, “Home”, originally airing October 31st, 2010. Beware of its spooooky gangsters and scaaaarily superfluous lesbian nude scenes. This week opens with Nucky’s crotchety old dad from the 1400s slipping on some squalor and lying on the ground unable to move or ruin the ground’s childhood. Eli eventually arrives with a doctor, but Nucky shows up later as the first move in his nonstop quest to re-affirm to his dad how much they hate one another. Nucky wants to move his dad into an Ether Home, or something, but Eli’s happy to have the dad stay with him because “the kids love him” – back before tv, watching old angry dudes fall comprised 80% of entertainment. Nucky decides to give the house to Ward Boss Fleming so he can fix it up, purely out of random generosity and not because Nucky wants...

The nostalgic husk of Ken Burns’s love of baseball weighs heavily on this latest installment of his documentary series, entitled Baseball: The Tenth Inning. Not his love, necessarily, of training, rained out games, and near-riots inspired by little more than the color and lettering of someone’s shirt, but his love of sepia-tone archive footage, wide shots of masses of people cheering, and the hope that any given game could end in some sort of generation-defining explosion of community spirit (presumably looking something like the ending of The Natural). Burns is certainly aware of the moral intricacy and everyday rigamarole that goes into making the game happen for viewers near and far, and occasionally presents it rather eloquently, but each and every time that it comes into conflict with his vision of baseball as a unifying force for good, he tends to lean towards the more fan-ready perspective, seemingly...
