In recent years, after multiple setbacks stemming from makers taking audiences for granted, Marvel Studios has doubled down on the nostalgia pandering in major ways, be it through crossovers, cameos, or revamping beloved classics. The studio’s recent attempt to celebrate the integration of mutants as mainstay characters of the MCU through X-Men’97, a continuation of fan favorite X-Men: The Animated Series, is another such attempt, but one that exudes novelty, heart, and enough care to make the transition between the original and sequel series appear seamless.
As the premiere team of the Marvel universe, the X-Men and Mutants saga arguably command the most important section of the franchise’s storytelling potential, as time and again, the representation of the marginalized, repressed section of humankind has been reflected through their stories in vivid ways. Pairing this with memorable characterization and interpersonal dynamics between characters, the original series was able to...

In the original "X-Men" animated series, we're introduced to Marvel's mutant characters by way of Jubilee, a teen girl who has just discovered that she has mutant powers, which puts her in danger of being pursued by the dangerous Sentinels under the Mutant Registration Act. Rescued by the X-Men, Jubilee becomes a young new recruit on the team, and she acts as a proxy for the audience to be introduced to the world of Professor Charles Xavier and his School for the Gifted.
However, when "X-Men: The Animated Series" came to an end with the fifth season, Jubilee had become a full-fledged member of the team. Her wardrobe even changed to reflect that she'd grown up a bit, and the episode "Jubilee's Fairytale Theater" affirmed that the rest of the X-Men viewed her as an equally formidable mutant. Thankfully, "X-Men '97" provides a similar entry point for new viewers...

Can Marvel recapture the feeling of waking up on a Saturday morning, a respite from educational prisons, to fight for equality alongside mutantkind? Is this series nothing more than a nostalgia...

If you are a millennial of a certain age, there’s a good chance Disney+’s X-Men ’97 will evoke nostalgic chills almost without trying: The theme song alone, borrowed from the original X-Men: The Animated Series, will be enough to transport some of us, Ratatouille-style, into memories of Saturday mornings bingeing cartoons over sugar cereal.
But as demonstrated by one failed remake or middling reboot after another, getting people to remember they used to like a show is one thing. Getting those people to fall in love with it again, and recruit new fans along the way, is entirely another. It is, then, a testament to the precision of X-Men ’97‘s balancing act that it actually pulls it off. The animated series is a throwback in the most ideal sense — so vintage, it comes all the way back around to feeling fresh again.

One of our festival highlights earlier this year, Lila Avilés’ Tótem is now preparing for a U.S. release to kick off 2024 following an awards-qualifying. Mexico’s Oscar entry marks the director’s follow-up to The Chambermaid and follows a family over the course of a single, meaningful day, mainly from the perspective of 7-year-old Sol (Naíma Sentíes), as her mother (Montserrat Marañón) and extended relatives prepare for the birthday party of the girl’s father (Mateo Garcia). Ahead of a January 26, 2024 release for the Berlinale and Nd/Nf selection from Sideshow and Janus Films, the first U.S. trailer has now arrived.
Rory O’Connor said in his review, “The characters of Tótem don’t just appear onscreen; they take it over. From the top there’s the patriarch Roberto (Alberto Amador), who speaks using an electrolarynx and, when not dryly cajoling his flock, enjoys pruning a handsome Bonsai. There...

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers from the series finale of “Riverdale,” which aired on The CW Wednesday, August 23.
The end of “Riverdale” has arrived — after seven seasons of milkshake-drinking, love triangles, crime- solving and one incredible bear attack. The CW’s teen drama-turned-supernatural phenom finally wrapped up on Wednesday night, but not before throwing in a few more major twists.
The finale, titled “Goodbye, Riverdale,” jumped ahead 67 years. Betty (Lili Reinhart) is in her 80s, and is the last remaining alive member of the Riverdale crew. The night before she dies, she gets a visit from the ghost of Jughead (Cole Sprouse), who takes her back to a day when she missed school, revisiting all of her friends and finding out what happened to them after high school. For a full breakdown of where everyone ended up and how they all died (!), read our full recap.

Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from the extended version of the series finale of Riverdale.
The sun has set on The CW’s Riverdale after seven seasons.
The nostalgic final episode, aptly titled “Goodbye, Riverdale,” payed homage not only to the characters that audiences have watched fight crime, unravel conspiracy theories, travel to parallel universes, and more — but also to the people behind the scenes who brought the show to life in the first place.
While it won’t air in the broadcast version, an extended cut of the finale includes another cameo from former Warner Bros. TV chief Peter Roth, whom the series’ creators credit as one of the champions of the Archie comic adaptation from the early days.
“It was Roberto’s idea to have Peter Roth play a studio exec on Riverdale. When the writers talked about having a studio exec mentor Veronica, Roberto thought it...

Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from the series finale of The CW’s Riverdale.
Goodbye, Riverdale.
After seven seasons that included multiple serial killers, at least one human sacrifice, lots of drug trafficking, an organ harvesting cult, a parallel universe, and time travel in the name of saving the town from an impending comet…the eclectic series has come to an end.
The CW series bid farewell to its characters during a heartfelt episode on Wednesday which saw Betty (Lili Reinhart) at the end of her life. She’s just learned that Jughead (Cole Sprouse) has died, meaning she’s the last of the original crew still alive. As she expresses to her granddaughter that she’d like to visit Riverdale one last time, she’s visited by a younger version of Jughead, who offers her one last chance to spend a day in high school with her friends.

The 31-year-old, who can play in midfield or at right back, was forced out of Sunday’s 0-0 draw away to Getafe in the 15th minute, after feeling a problem in his left hamstring and was replaced by Eric Garcia.
After tests in Barcelona on Monday, the club published a medical report, informing that “the tests carried out this morning have shown that the first team player, Sergi Roberto, has an injury in the femoral biceps of his left leg. He is out and his progress will determine when he is available.”
Roberto had struggled with hamstring problems in recent years, and the injury, which came after 12 consecutive appearances, means he will almost certainly not play again before the league ends on the...

That bad boy of (mostly) French cinema Walerian Borowczyk has been converting doubters into fans for sixty years, even though his pictures were never easy to see. Before he took a headlong leap into soft-core epics, he made some of the most creative and influential short films of his time — and they eventually became more erotic as well.

Review by Andrew MacArthur of Cinehouse
Alicia Scherson’s third feature-length film, Il Futuro, is a staggeringly impressive watch. Adapted from Chilean novel Una Novelita Lumpen by Roberto Bolano, Il Futuro is a thrilling tale of suspense, eroticism, and intrigue set against a backdrop of vintage Hollywood Gothic noir.
Il Futuro follows two teenage orphans, Bianca and Tomas, who become intertwined with two untrustworthy opportunists from the local gym. These acquaintances persuade Bianca (the eldest of the orphans, played by Manuela Martelli) to infiltrate and rob the home of one of their ex-clients, Marciste (Rutger Hauer) – a blind, former Mister Universe and movie star who has become something of a recluse. However, Bianca’s developing feelings for Marciste seem set to compromise her original intentions.
