When the revered folksinger and author Woody Guthrie passed away on October 3, 1967 – following a long, tragic battle with Huntington’s disease – his friends and colleagues were moved to celebrate his life and legacy with a tribute concert. The manager of Guthrie’s business affairs, Harold Leventhal, commissioned the blacklisted novelist and screenwriter Millard Lampell to re-work an old script he had earlier fashioned from Guthrie’s bountiful catalog of songs and prose. Lampell was well suited to the task, not merely an outsider looking in. In 1941 Lampell would co-found the Almanac Singers, the agit-prop folk music ensemble that featured Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Lee Hays and several others.

It was announced today a theatrical motion picture will be made about Mine That Bird, and his extraordinary journey and triumph at the 2009 Kentucky Derby. The director will be Jim Wilson, Academy Award Winning Producer of Dances With Wolves and many other films including, The Bodyguard, Wyatt Earp and Message in Bottle. Lead producer is Pieter Kroonenburg, who is also president of Kingsborough Pictures.
The film will be a success story for New Mexico’s film industry, with a commitment by the producers to utilize New Mexico crews and talent whenever possible and to shoot the majority of the picture within the state. Variety is reporting Martin Scorsese has agreed to direct the biopic Sinatra for Universal Pictures and Mandalay Pictures with Phil Alden Robinson (Field of Dreams) writing the script based on the life of the iconic entertainer. Universal and Mandalay have acquired the Frank Sinatra life rights and music rights from Frank Sinatra Enterprises, but there is no word on what exactly will serve as material for the screenplay. Sinatra was an American singer and actor who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his part in From Here to Eternity and was awarded an Honorary Oscar in 1945 The House I Live In, which he shared with Frank Ross, Mervyn LeRoy, Albert Maltz and Earl Robinson.
