In the West Virginia Republican primary for governor last Tuesday, three candidates – Patrick Morrisey, Chris Miller, and Moore Capito – engaged in a heated competition to demonstrate their staunch opposition to transgender rights.
This political tug-of-war has drawn significant attention and criticism from civil liberties advocates.
The candidates’ campaign tactics have involved a series of TV ads and online rhetoric, as each attempt to outdo the others in their efforts to restrict LGBTQ rights. Morrisey, the state attorney general, has positioned himself as a leading national voice against “biological males” participating in women’s sports and vowed to take the state’s controversial “Save Women’s Sports Act” to the Supreme Court after a federal appeals court overturned it.
In response, Miller claimed that Morrisey had previously lobbied for a clinic that dispensed gender transition medication to children in New York.
Meanwhile, Capito released an ad that depicted a fictional race...

Republicans in North Carolina have selected Mark Robinson as their nominee in the swing state’s 2024 gubernatorial race. Robinson — the state’s first Black lieutenant governor, who will now face Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein in the general election — has a richer history of bigoted commentary than any major-party political candidate in recent memory. He has leveled truly vile attacks against Muslims, Jews, women, and the LGBTQ community, while pushing a torrent of conspiracy theories about everything from Covid-19 to the 2020 election. He also loves Donald Trump.

On Tuesday night, North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson (R), a controversial figure known for his inflammatory remarks and staunch opposition to abortion rights, emerged victorious in the state’s Republican nomination for governor.
Robinson, the first black lieutenant governor in North Carolina’s history, is set to face off against North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein (D), in what promises to be a closely contested race in November. Both candidates are vying to succeed the current Democratic governor, Roy Cooper.
Robinson’s political career gained traction after an impassioned speech on gun laws he delivered to his local council in 2018 went viral, in which he presented himself as a representative of average Americans who feel targeted and endangered by attempts to restrict firearm access. Robinson’s speech propelled him into the spotlight and he subsequently became a conservative commentator, secured a position on the National Rifle Association board, and...

Mark Robinson, the Republican candidate for North Carolina’s gubernatorial election, said he wanted to go back to a time “where women couldn’t vote” in a video that resurfaced in the wake of his Super Tuesday victory.
The video, recorded at a Republican Women of Pitt County event in March 2020, shows Robinson when he was a candidate for North Carolina’s lieutenant governor, which he later won.
In the clip, he says that he heard a man ask about the phrase “Make America Great Again,” which he posited implied...

After eight years of Democratic leadership, North Carolina’s next governor could be a guy with a long history of shitposting on Facebook.
Mark Robinson, the winner of the state’s Republican primary for governor on Tuesday, has served as North Carolina’s lieutenant governor since 2021. He shot into the national spotlight in part by devoting himself to Donald Trump and making a slew of incendiary, deeply bigoted comments. Trump has endorsed Robinson for the state’s top job, and even called him “Martin Luther King on steroids” at a recent campaign event.

North Carolina’s lieutenant governor, Mark Robinson, does not want to talk about abortion — in fact, the leading Republican candidate for governor cannot even bring himself to say the word.
Speaking at an ice cream social in Concord, North Carolina on July 6 — five days after the state’s new abortion ban went into effect — he told the crowd, “North Carolina needs to become a destination state for life. Now notice what I said: I said ‘life.’ I did not say the A-word. The A-word. Everybody wants us to say the A-word…...
