Monster Trucks is pure, child-first cinema that’s energetically staged to wow younger audiences (and entertain older chaperones). Didn’t see that coming, did ya? We’re talking about a film that Viacom publicly took a $115 million write-down for and buried away with little-to-no hype. As a critic, these scenarios typically spell a 15-car-pile-up kind of disaster – yet Monster Trucks is no such dumpster fire.
As legend tells, former Paramount film president Adam Goodwin fell in love with an idea co-spawned by his four-year-old son. From there, Ice Age/Robots director Chris Wedge was offered his first feature outside animation, with screenplay duties going to Safety Not Guaranteed/Jurassic World writer Derek Connolly (story by Glenn Berger/Jonathan Aibel/Matthew Robinson). No joke. All these people were tasked with making a child’s cinematic dreams come true, and that’s exactly what the film feels like – a wide-eyed, enthusiastic slice of fun-filled kiddie entertainment.

Warner Bros. is moving ahead with a new big-screen incarnation of the musical “Little Shop of Horrors,” with Greg Berlanti set to direct and Matthew Robinson writing the script, TheWrap has confirmed. Marc Platt is producing the remake of director Frank Oz’s 1986 movie — a musical version of the 1960 Roger Corman cult classic. Platt has produced big-screen musicals like “Into the Woods” and this year’s awards sensation “La La Land” — as well as the Broadway megahit “Wicked.” “The Little Shop of Horrors” started as a feature comedy about a florist’s assistant who grows a plant with a particular taste.

Exclusive: Warner Bros is moving forward with a new incarnation of Little Shop of Horrors, with Greg Berlanti set to direct and Matthew Robinson writing the script. This one will be a musical, a fresh version of the 30-year old Frank Oz-directed film. That was based on the Roger Corman-directed 1960 low budget sci-fi campy tale about a clumsy young man who raises a plant, discovers it is carnivorous, and kills to keep it fed. There is a memorable scene with Jack Nicholson…...

The unloved films of 2009 provide the focus in our final list of the 2000s' overlooked greats...
The year 2009 will partly be remembered as the year Avatar dominating the box office, with audiences flocking to see James Cameron's leafy pulp epic in shimmering 3D. Making almost $2.8bn worldwide, Avatar was a true behemoth, besting Cameron's own Titanic as the highest-grossing film of all time (not adjusted for inflation) and hastening a rush of 3D films in the years that followed.
Films such as 2012, Sherlock Holmes and boozy comedy The Hangover were also among the top 10, but as always, some of the most memorable and individual films of the year were far from the most financially successful. So to round off our series of underrated flicks of the 2000s, here's our selection of 2009's overlooked films...

It's a film that's been 20 years in the making: a biopic on Jackie Robinson, the man to break the color barrier in baseball. Sure, there've been others, such as 1950's "The Jackie Robinson Story" (starring Robinson himself) or TNT's "The Court-Martial of Jackie Robinson" or HBO's "Soul of the Game." And yet, there's never been one like this weekend's "42," starring Chadwick Boseman as Robinson and Harrison Ford as Branch Rickey, the Dodgers' general manager who signed him. I don't want to spoil it, so all I can say is, don't miss seeing "42." But to prepare you, here are five interesting facts you didn't know about the man himself:
1) Robinson's older brother Mack finished second behind Jesse Owens at the 1936 Berlin Olympics: James was not the only competitor to break the standing Olympic record for the 200-meter dash that year. Matthew Robinson, also known as Mack, broke that...

Way back when in 1984, The Official Doctor Who Magazine (yes, it really was called that) ran a poll to find the best story of season 21. Given all the plaudits and platitudes heaped upon it, you'd expect The Caves Of Androzani to have taken the top spot. In actual fact, at numero uno was...
Resurrection Of The Daleks!
Now there's a surprise, especially when you consider how Resurrection has fallen so far from grace. These days, Resurrection would be lucky to scoop the fourth spot, and it's only the follies of Warriors Of The Deep and The Twin Dilemma that save it from being the official season 21 turkey.
So what went wrong? When did the coins fall from the eyes, so to speak? After all, in theory, Resurrection has an awful lot going for it. Eric Saward's back behind the word processor, after his previous offering Earthshock was released to great acclaim.

To his credit, on the surface, fame and money do not seem to be so important to Ricky Gervais. He’s got both, but there’s an insouciance in his attitude towards celebrity and the media circus. It’s not his reason for getting out of bed in a morning – it’s the work. However discerning he is with regards to the endless courting by Hollywood, he has avoided taking the road-most-lucrative, in favour of concentrating on projects he cares about and occasional cameos in the likes of Night at the Museum and its sequel.
That’s all fine and well. The striking fact remains – Gervais is not a proper actor – he’s a comedian who co-created a seminal piece of British television. The offers, of course, flooded in nonetheless.

At last night's Cinema Society screening of The Invention of Lying, in New York City, Vf Daily caught up with the film's co-writers and directors, Ricky Gervais and Matthew Robinson, and asked: What was it like working together? I was as lucky as I was with [The Office co-writer] Stephen Merchant—Matthew and I saw eye to eye on most things. We traded notes and we sort of interviewed each other and we got on, and our relationship was based on the same sort of mutual respect as my partnership with Stephen. And we imposed the same rules that myself and Stephen have always had: one veto and it's out. There is no compromise. If one of you doesn't like it, it's not in the film. So what you're left with is a film that you both like. It's already a compromise working with two people, so you've got to be strict with...

NEW YORK -- Warner Bros. has swept up three high-profile Media Rights Capital-produced features for distribution in a mid-eight-figure deal: Richard Kelly's horror film The Box starring Cameron Diaz, James Marsden and Frank Langella; Robert Rodriguez's family fantasy Shorts; and Ricky Gervais and Matthew Robinson's comedy This Side of the Truth, starring the director with Jennifer Garner in negotiations to co-star.
The deal also will infuse cash into each project's budget. Warner Bros. is partnering with Ted Field's Radar Pictures to co-finance Box, and its unnamed production outfit (formed with the Abu Dhabi Media Co. and Hunt Lowry) will co-finance Shorts, adding to MRC's initial investment.
The studio will handle worldwide distribution on Shorts and domestic distribution on Box and Truth. The acquisitions have been in the works for several months. One factor in the deal's slow gestation was that it came along as Warners president and COO Alan Horn was reorganizing the company's motion picture group and promoting production head Jeff Robinov to president of the newly formed Warner Bros. Picture Group last month.
