After the release of Day of the Dead in 1985, twenty years went by without George A. Romero being able to get another zombie movie into production, even though he was very open about the fact that he had an idea for another one. During that time, a lot of fans expected the next movie to be called Twilight of the Dead, following the progression of the titles Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead. But when Romero did make a fourth zombie movie, he threw a titular curveball and called it Land of the Dead. That was followed by Diary of the Dead and Survival of the Dead. Now it looks like Twilight of the Dead is going to happen after all – and might even begin filming before the end of this year!

Special Mention: Werckmeister Harmonies
Directed by Bela Tarr and Ágnes Hranitzky
Written by László Krasznahorkai and Bela Tarr
2000, Hungary / Italy / Germany
Genre: Emotional Horror
Bela Tarr is a filmmaker whose work is a highly acquired taste, but as a metaphysical horror story, Werckmeister Harmonies is an utter masterpiece that should appeal to most cinephiles. The film title refers to the 17th-century German organist-composer Andreas Werckmeister, esteemed for his influential structure and harmony of music. Harmonies is strung together like a magnificent symphony working on the viewer’s emotions over long stretches of time even when the viewer is unaware of what’s going on. Attempting to make sense of Tarr’s movies in strict narrative terms is not the best way to go about watching his films; but regardless if you come away understanding Harmonies or not, you won’t soon forget the film. Harmonies is a technical triumph, shot...

These two posters for the same film—compositionally identical but stylistically so different—are the work of two of the greatest and most prolific poster artists of the 20th Century: the Russian-born, French-naturalized Boris Grinsson and the Italian Anselmo Ballester.
The film in question, Judgment of God, is a medieval drama based on the 15th century German legend of Agnes Bernauer, a commoner who married a Bavarian Prince and was accused of witchcraft by his disapproving father. Released in 1952, it was directed by Raymond Bernard (1891-1977), who is best known for his 1924 Miracle of the Wolves (another medieval saga). The Criterion Collection, who released two of his 1930s films under their Eclipse label, calls Bernard “one of the greatest and least-known directors of all time.”
The two posters were either based on the same production still—though to me that seems unlikely since it seems to be a composite...

The second volume of George Romero’s Deadtime Stories was recently announced and we have a new trailer that features footage from the three segments of the horror anthology.
“George A. Romero, writer-director of the famed Night Of The Living Dead, has created this horror anthology containing the following three short horror films:
· The Gorge: Three best friends go hiking on a fun morning expedition when a sudden avalanche leaves them trapped in a cave with no way out. Now imprisoned in a living nightmare, how long can the three survive before they begin to turn on each other?
· On Sabbath Hill: A chilling tale about a handsome playboy professor who is a stickler for student attendance. When his wandering affections cause a female admirer to commit suicide, his stern attendance rules come back to haunt him. Literally.
· Dust: When a scientist at a high-tech space lab discovers dust from...

For anyone that thought Geroge A. Romero was finished with zombies after his latest, Survival of the Dead, premiered on VOD (it hits theaters on May 28), you're wrong. Dead wrong. Romero feels like he's on a roll, and told Movieweb that he'd like to make two more Dead movies, both if which, like Survival, will follow characters from his own zombie apocalypse reboot, Diary of the Dead.
I have this idea. I'm off on a new track here with Diary of the Dead and this film, Survival of the Dead, sort of grows out of Diary. I have this conceit that I would like to do two more using characters from Diary. So that Diary would sort of be the Mother-ship of this little set of films that grows out of that and paints a portrait of what the world is like three months into the phenomenon. So I don't know?...

Like most of George A. Romero’s superb catalog of films, the original 1973 version of The Crazies was a satirical horror film reverse engineered out of bubblegum social commentary. Like Breck Eisner’s remake, The Crazies centered on a group of individuals caught in a crossfire between infected farmland folk and the faceless and indiscriminate militia called in to contain the outbreak. While most of the comparisons between 28 Days Later and Romero’s works were made with Day and Dawn of the Dead in mind, that film owed more to The Crazies.
The director’s unique voice, so present in his living dead films and works like Knightriders and Martin, was unfortunately stifled by budgetary limitations. The infectious threat felt diminished and much was left to the imagination — not in a way that benefited the film, but instead revealed a world of potential that wasn’t quite reached. Weighing down...

In addition to the new sizzle reel over at Apple (a sizzle reel?), MTV has posted yet another clip from Overture Films' The Crazies, their redo of George. A. Romero's classic arriving in theaters tomorrow. In the (probably last) clip that you'll find below, Radha Mitchell is quarantined by the government and taken to a containment area within a high school. Timothy Olyphant, Radha Mitchell, Joe Reegan, Danielle Panabaker, Joe Anderson, Justin Welborn all star. The story revolves around the inhabitants of a small Kansas town who are beset by death and insanity after a plane crash lets loose a secret biological weapon into the water supply.

Exclusive Media Group’s production company Hammer Films (a relaunch of the legendary British horror-focused moviehouse) has just announced that upstart British director James Watkins will call the shots on Hammer’s first 3D film, an adaptation of author Susan Hill’s 1983 supernatural classic The Woman in Black. The project will be Watkins’s second feature effort, the first being 2008’s severely underrated Eden Lake, a taut white-knuckler about hooded teenage hooligans terrorizing a couple’s (including current hot-actor Michael Fassbender) picnic in the woods. The script for The Woman in Black has been written by Jane Goldman, filmmaker Matthew Vaughn’s partner-in-crime who penned the screenplays for Vaughn’s Stardust and his upcoming buzz-grabber Kick-Ass.

Spirits Captured On Film [1] I have this story that I like to tell after I’ve been drinking about the night that I was alone in our house and thought someone had broken in. I was scared shitless. It’s that time for the weekly run of release date and title changes. This week, a buffet of eagerly anticipated releases acquired release dates. Fox's "Predators" will see release on July 9th next year. Robert Rodriguez’ attempt to revitalize the ailing Fox franchise may pay off, the studio definitely needs help here. The last abomination "Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem" was a disgrace to a much-beloved species, opening on Christmas Day, 2007 with $10 million. It's befuddling to note that this shockingly bad offering went on to gross $41 million in the U.S. and $87 million overseas. "Mutant Chronicles," made with a smidgeon of cash, made this look like "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" by comparison. Weinstein Co’s “The Road,” easily one of the most followed films on our site, will see a wide release on October 16th this year. The John Hillcoat film based on the novel by Cormac McCarthy stars Viggo Mortensen,...
