In what could have easily been the next season of “American Crime Story,” Lionsgate Television is diving into the gambling scandal that’s rocked Major League Baseball since March.
Lionsgate is developing a scripted series about how Shohei Ohtani, the Japanese superstar of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Angels, became the subject of massive fraud and theft at the hands of his longtime interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara. Just days ago, Mizuhara agreed to plead guilty to accusations he stole almost $17 million from Ohtani to pay off gambling debts.
Scott Delman (“Station Eleven”) will produce along with Albert Chen, a former senior editor with Sports Illustrated, MLB Network contributor, and the writer of “Billion Dollar Fantasy” about the battle between gambling apps DraftKings and FanDuel. No platform or creative talent is being announced at this stage. Executive Max Elins is overseeing the project for Lionsgate Television.

The gambling scandal surrounding LA Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani’s interpreter is already getting the TV series treatment.
Lionsgate Television is in early development on a series focused on the scandal. No writer or network is currently attached to the project, but Scott Delman and Albert Chen are both attached to produce. Executive Max Elins is overseeing the project for Lionsgate Television, while Bryan Weiser negotiated the deal.
Ohtani made headlines the world over when he signed a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The star pitcher and designated hitter had for years been working with interpreter Ippei Mizuhara, but just one day into the 2024 MLB season, it was revealed that Mizuhara had stolen nearly $17 million from Ohtani to cover gambling debts. He was immediately fired and later turned himself in to federal authorities. It was just reported that he has plead guilty to bank and tax fraud charges.

Major League Baseball has the precise problem it doesn’t want to have right now. Shohei Ohtani, the Japanese two-way superstar who is the most interesting baseball player in modern memory, is at the center of a gambling scandal. The gist of what’s known: someone wired $4.5 million from Ohtani’s bank account to a sports betting operation run by Matthew Bowyer, an Orange County bookmaker whose operations have attracted the attention of the FBI.
From here, it gets murky. Ippei Mizuhara, Ohtani’s longtime friend and now-former translator, claimed...

Exclusive: Winter State Entertainment on Tuesday announced two feature docs on NFL Hall of Famer Mel Blount and MLB icon Tommy John that will lead its forthcoming slate, having wrapped principal photography on each right before the launch of the WGA strike.
The first film, Mel Blount: Whatever It Takes, on longtime Pittsburgh Steeler Blount, will offer a deep dive into his life journey, from his arduous beginning in a segregated Vidalia, Georgia to getting drafted in the 3rd round by the struggling Steelers, to the next 14 years, where he won four championships and cemented himself as the best at his position as cornerback. Upon retirement, Blount shifted his focus towards kids who were stuck in the system, opening two youth homes to give them a chance to turn their lives around, even when the community and KKK pushed back against him. Now, 40 years later, Blount has afforded this opportunity to hundreds.

Greg Gutfeld and the guests of his namesake Fox News late night show took to the woodshed an opinion piece published Sunday in USA Today, spending the entire 13-minute “Gutfeld!” opening segment Tuesday night shredding sports writer Nancy Armour’s 800-word column about transgender athletes.
Armour’s piece called the views of ESPN reporter and “Sunday NFL Countdown” host Sam Ponder on transgender women and girls in sports “bigotry.” Ponder had recently publicly sided with Riley Gaines, the former college swimmer leading a campaign against transgender women and girls’ participation in sports at all levels.
Gutfeld himself kicked off the kicking, calling Armour “ghastly,” “godawful,” “riding in on her broomstick” and a “hack,” and suggested that USA Today is “the official doormat for Americans staying at low-priced hotels.”
Then things got mean.

“Home Alone” and “Better Call Saul” actor Devin Ratray, who is already facing domestic assault charges in Oklahoma, has been accused of raping a woman in his New York City apartment in 2017.
According to CNN, a woman named Lisa Smith has come forward with the accusation — and to complain that New York Police Department detectives spent time gathering evidence and interviewing potential witnesses five years ago — and then abandoned the case without action or explanation.
The NYPD repeatedly declined to comment to TheWrap on whether there is an active investigation into Ratray.
Ratray, who played Macaulay Culkin’s “bully” older brother in the first two “Home Alone” movies, has never been charged in the New York case. He did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment, but denied the rape allegation in a phone call to CNN.

Pete Rose declined to answer two reporters’ questions today about his relationship with an alleged underage girl in his first return to Philadelphia since August 1989.
Rose was present as the team celebrated the Phillies’ 1980 World Series championship team and other former players.
The incidents in question first surfaced in 2017. A woman who has remained unidentified said Rose, then a member of the Cincinnati Reds, initiated a relationship with her in 1973, when she was age 14 and 15. They later allegedly had sexual encounters in Cincinnati that lasted several years. She also alleged Rose met her in locations outside Ohio for sex.
At the time, Rose was in his mid-30s and was married with two children.
Rose’s lawyer had said the woman’s claims are unverified. Rose said in 2017 that he did have a relationship with the woman, but he said it started when she was 16. He also said they never had sex outside Ohio,...

In honor of Halloween, I once again have a special essay-article up, and this time I can name the contributor. Randall William Cook rates special celebrity status around DVD Savant despite being a friend from way, way back. I hope he's writing a book about his career, because his Hollywood experiences range far afield, from UCLA film school, to acting and directing film and TV, to doing special make-ups, animation direction, front-rank stop motion direction, and second unit direction on big features. Heavily into digital work since the 1990s, Randy supervised character animation and sequence direction for the three Lord of the Rings movies, netting him an amazing three Oscars, three years straight. And he's still the same guy from college -- a new Harryhausen or Welles disc comes out, and he wants to know all about it. Oh, and Cook is a fine writer as well -- as I think this thoughtful piece shows.

Hard to believe it's been 35 years since "Airplane!" took flight (on July 2, 1980) and taught us all to speak jive, order the chicken instead of the fish, and avoid calling each other "Shirley." Who drafted big stars to shill? Who went for laughs? Who tugged at heartstrings? And who went out of their way to remind us with a sledgehammer, “Sex sells”?
Read our quick take on many of the commercials from Super Bowl Xlix, and then share your own reviews in Comments.

The 2015 Super Bowl is more than just cheese products, football and Tom Brady's smug mug. HitFix is watching all the commercials along with you, so get out your red pen: we're grading all the ads as they happen. Follow along, we'll start the tally at kickoff, 3:30pm Pst. -- Fine, it's not kickoff yet, but I half-wish the pterodactyl from the "Jurassic World" trailer would sweep down and pick up Pete Carroll. "Think it will scare the kids?" asks Bryce Dallas Howard's clueless-sounding character. Do You Think? More sweaty shots of Chris Pratt's half-scared, all-brutally handsome face. Grade: B Chevy's "What if your TV went out?" commercial is the equivalent of your little brother poking your feet with a pencil and asking if its annoying. It is annoying. And the Cloverfieldian "cut-out" of my television lacks novelty. AC/DC keeps collecting "Back in Black" paychecks. Grade: D+ Speaking of paychecks,...

The WWE Hall of Fame is one of those things that is cool when deserving wrestlers get in. At other times it’s something that makes people cringe because there have been some ridiculous choices that got in year before big names.
The “Celebrity Wing” of the Hall of Fame is all about honoring celebrities that had some sort of history in WWE. Recent inductees include Mike Tyson, Mr. T, Donald Trump, Pete Rose, Bob Uecker and Drew Carey. Some of them were on WWE TV only two or three times, yet they’re in.
This year’s celebrity inductee is Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was on a Smackdown episode in 1999, then he inducted Bruno Sammartino into the Hall of Fame in 2013 and then he was on Raw in 2014. That’s pretty much it for him in WWE, but Vince McMahon and Triple H are such marks for bodybuilding that they put him in.

The director of such classics as The Last Picture Show and Paper Moon is finally making a return after 14 years of absence from features, but after watching the trailer for She’s Funny That Way, I wonder if it’s anything to celebrate. Peter Bogdanovich has been keeping plenty busy over the past decade and a half, doing a little more acting, some hosting duties on TCM, maintaining a blog at Indiewire and helming some TV movies, namely biopics about Natalie Wood and Pete Rose, and a documentary on Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. But his last true picture show, as far as a theatrical narrative release, was the 2001 historically inspired jazz-age farce The Cat’s Meow. For his comeback, Bogdanovich has written another wild comedy, this time with ex-wife Louise Stratten, and he’s corralled a very impressive cast, as someone of his background can easily do. Imogen Poots stars as a high-class prostitute-turned-Broadway star who...

Chicago – With the 2014 Major League All-Star game coming up next week on July 15th, that break is a time to reflect on the current season and your favorite team. At the “Hot Stove Cool Music” event in Chicago on June 20th, HollywoodChicago.com got in the All-Star spirit by talking with the President of Baseball Operations for the Chicago Cubs, Theo Epstein, plus baseball writer and former Espn commentator, Peter Gammons.
Hot Stove Cool Music was co-founded by Peter Gammons in 2000, and began in Boston. Theo Epstein and his family charity organization, “Foundation to Be Named Later” partnered with the event shortly thereafter, and in total it has raised more than $5.5 million dollars, creating positive opportunities for disadvantaged children and families. Cub Charities was also a co-sponsor of the night, which featured Gammons, Epstein and other Chicago talents rocking on the Cabaret Metro stage in Wrigleyville, about one block from the Chicago Cubs home base,...

The 2014 WWE Hall of Fame Ceremony is this Saturday, and another group of inductees, headlined by the Ultimate Warrior, will join the ranks of wrestling’s greatest men and women. But there are still numerous deserving wrestlers who have not yet been inducted.
Here is a list of 15 of those wrestlers, tag teams, or factions that deserve to be in the WWE Hall of Fame.
Keep in mind that this list has been compiled according to WWE’s criteria for what constitutes a deserving addition to an “elite” group that includes Koko B. Ware but not Frank Gotch. There are going to be a lot of names not included that many will feel are more deserving of inclusion, and they should check out the list of the Professional Wrestling Hall of Famers or the Wrestling Observer Hall of Famers.
Here is the extensive criteria for those who will not make this list.

It’s pretty obvious the writers tried to wow us with a one-two punch midway through last night’s “Platonish.” Within seconds, we got both Bryan Cranston reprising his role as tyrannical architect Hammond Druthers for the first time since Breaking Bad And a surprise Mother run-in. Unfortunately, I was disappointed by both. After CBS piggybacked on the AMC series’ success by promoting this episode with a corny Breaking Ted logo, all we really got from Cranston was a callback to the Pete Rose baseball and Ted’s Chicago offer (albeit with a few amusing references to Cranston’s Emmy-winning mastermind). And, I hate to say it, but I found the Mother kind of annoying. In the first official flashback episode, Future Ted ends up telling a story that unfolded about six months prior. We join the gang in medias res at McLaren’s, where Robin and Ted are saluting “major craving-for-a-mojito.

Though Walter White is no friend to mothers—or, at least, to the mother of his kids—Bryan Cranston is apparently a big enough friend to How I Met Your Mother that he’ll be popping up again on the show later this season. This is Cranston’s second round on the show as Hammond Druthers, Ted Mosby’s jerk boss from season two. While details about Cranston’s arc haven’t yet been released, here’s hoping it has something to do with the theft of the character’s prize Pete Rose baseball, which, Walter White-style, he’s been ...

Breaking Bad may be coming to an end this Sunday, but television viewers won't need to wait very long before seeing Bryan Cranston again on the small screen.
Via Twitter, CBS just confirmed that the Emmy winner will reprise his role as Ted's old architectural firm boss, Hammond Druthers, at some point this fall.
The character was last seen in 2007 being fired by Ted after the two switched roles.
No word yet on just what brings Hammond back into the picture, but no one better touch his signed Pete Rose baseball.
How I Met Your Mother Season 9 moves ahead with a new episodes this Monday.

Holy awesome casting news! CBS confirms that Bryan Cranston will return to the show for its final season, revising his role as Hammond Druthers, whom we haven't seen since season two. As of now, Cranston is slated for one episode, and will begin shooting his guest spot soon. Cranston played Ted Mosby's (Josh Radnor) boss for a few episodes in 2006—before the world ever knew (and worshipped) him as Walter White. His character Hammond Druthers was a completely unlikeable schmuck, and fans may remember that Lily (Alyson Hannigan) stole his prized baseball, which had been signed three times by Pete Rose. Hammond vowed to fire three people every hour until it was returned. (Such a Heisenberg move,...

This past Monday on Raw, the roster rose up against their corporate oppressors to help out Daniel Bryan battle against the Shield. The ripple effects of this and the treatment of Dusty Rhodes carried over into the Main Event and gave hints of crossing over to future events of Nxt as well. Let’s talk about the Main Event first.
This week Main Event came from my surrogate hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio . Alex Riley, subbing for the decimated Miz thanks to Randy Orton, sat alongside Josh Matthews to call the action. Interesting enough, they did not replay the footage of the attack on Monday.
The action begins with the spiritual son of Curt Hennig (Dolph Ziggler) versus the biological son of the WWE Hall of Famer Curtis Axel. The third-generation athlete came out along with Paul Heyman in a wheelchair with Ryback following behind. It’s really interesting to see...

Stop us if you've heard this one before: Pete Rose has more tax problems!! TMZ has learned the Mlb legend has just been hit with Another tax lien ... this time the State of California has come-a-callin' for $15,520.86 in unpaid taxes for 2010 and 2011. Rose's tax problems are legendary -- just last year, the federal government smacked Pete with a tax bill of $120k for 2009 and 2010. And before that, Pete racked up a $973k debt with Uncle Sam for stiffing the govt.
