Lisa Rosen reflects, "As the adage goes, directing is 90% casting, so it would follow that an equally high percentage of directors make it easier on themselves by casting the same actors again and again. This season, 100% of those re-collaborations have resulted in stellar work. Paul Thomas Anderson wrote the Oscar-nominated screenplay of 'Inherent Vice' with Joaquin Phoenix in mind, marking their second partnership after 'The Master.' Wes Anderson filled 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' with returning guests, including Bill Murray and Owen Wilson, and was awarded a Golden Globe for a motion picture comedy along with best picture and original screenplay Oscar nods, among others." Los Angeles times -Break- Updated: Experts' Oscars predictions in 24 categories Sasha Stone observes, "Of all the great, deserving, American filmmakers that haven’t won the Best Director prize yet, Richard Linklater is up there with the most deserv..."'...

One of the reasons I get more bothered than some over the admittedly nebulous issue of so-called category fraud is that for every Christoph Waltz or Helen Hunt who gets slotted into the supporting race for a major role, it's harder for lesser-known actors who stand out in far smaller parts to get the recognition they deserve. If Hunt is supporting in "The Sessions," for example, then what is the superb Moon Bloodgood? So I'm glad Lisa Rosen has written this La Times piece celebrating a number of uncelebrated faces from assorted awards contenders, including Bloodgood, Sheila Vand in "Argo" (not...

indieWIRE: Brian Brooks passes along the news that Annette Bening will be the recipient of the the Santa Barbara International Film Festival’s American Riviera Award on January 28, just three days after this year’s Oscar nominations are announced. Bening, who is a best actress contender for her standout performances in both “The Kids Are All Right” and “Mother and Child,” joins an impressive list of recipients of this particular honor. Since it was created in 2004, all but one of the honorees went on to receive an Oscar nod, and three went on to win — Philip Seymour Hoffman for “Capote” (2005), Forest Whitaker for “The Last King of Scotland” (2006), and Sandra Bullock for “The Blind Side” (2009) just last year.

If you haven’t seen any of her films yet, I’m sure you’ve at least seen her in the trailer for Peter Sollett's “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist,” which opens everywhere tomorrow. Of course I’m talking about newcomer Kat Dennings, who is known for her supporting roles in “Raise Your Voice” and “Charlie Bartlett.”
Lisa Rosen over at the Los Angeles Times posted an interesting article about the young actress, who is slowly getting her name out there and celebrates her first lead role alongside Michael Cera in “Playlist.”
Rosen writes, "It is certainly her biggest role to date and one she recognizes as a turning point in her career. But for all that, she felt no pressure taking on one of the title characters and working full time on a 30-day shoot."
Dennings also recently starred alongside Anna Faris in "The House Bunny." One of...
