Virgin River fans looking for more cozy romantic dramas might find their next favorite series in Sullivan’s Crossing. Both shows feature similar small-town vibes and romantic storylines, which isn’t surprising considering that each is based on a book series by author Robyn Carr and comes from the same producing team. But Sullivan’s Crossing, which premiered in October 2023 on The CW, isn’t just a carbon copy of the Netflix hit, those involved in the show have said.
‘Sullivan’s Crossing’ is ‘its own thing,’ star Morgan Kohan says

In Sullivan’s Crossing, a neurosurgeon named Maggie Sullivan moves to a small town in Nova Scotia after her personal and professional life in Boston is thrown into turmoil. Sullivan's Crossing premiered earlier this month on The CW, and the Canadian import has been delivering vintage small-town drama since.
Sullivan's Crossing Season 1 Episode 2, which aired this week, ended with quite the shocker in the form of Andrew (Allan Hawco) arriving in town.
Before that, Cal (Chad Michael Murray) walked Maggie (Morgan Kohan) home after drinks at the bar.
The scene found Andrew threatened by Cal walking his girlfriend home, so naturally, my first question to series creator Roma Roth was: How threatened should Andrew be?
"Well, [Cal] is played by Chad Michael Murray," Roth shared with a laugh, adding, "So I think very, but I also think Andrew has his own baggage he's carrying around from a divorce."
Roth says that Andrew was feeling threatened before he even arrived in town because he was struggling with the fact that his girlfriend fled Boston.

The decision to pick up Sullivan’s Crossing wasn’t a huge departure for the CW; romantic, field-good series like Hart of Dixie, Life Unexpected and Everwood have long been hallmarks of the network..
Still, the show was immediately labeled as a cheap import because it first launched in Canada in March, where it became CTV’s highest-rated drama launch on over two years. It is produced by Reel World Management in association with CTV with Fremantle as global distributor. It’s from Roma Roth and Christopher E. Perry, the team behind Netflix’s Virgin River.
“We have to be entrepreneurial. We can’t just write a $10 million per-episode check for a show with some dragons in it,” President Brad Schwartz said during the upfronts in May.

Sullivan’s Crossing is a place to heal and reconnect on the romantic drama airing Wednesdays on The CW. And that’s just what neurosurgeon Maggie (Morgan Kohan) needs to do after her business partner is indicted for fraud and she’s charged with negligence. Back home, she’s reunited with her estranged father Sully (Scott Patterson), plus she meets the mysterious Cal (Chad Michael Murray). And sure, sparks are flying, but she does have a boyfriend (Allan Hawco’s Andrew). TV Insider turned to Sullivan’s Crossing showrunner and executive producer Roma Roth to find out what’s in store on the show based on Robyn Carr’s books. How is being back at Sullivan’s Crossing causing Maggie to look at herself differently and choices she’s made, who she is, who is and isn’t in her life? Roma Roth: She’s been gone for many years, and she has...

The CW has given an early renewal to one of its fall dramas — and will become a creative partner in the show.
The network has picked up a second season of Sullivan’s Crossing, a family drama starring Morgan Kohan and CW alums Scott Patterson (Gilmore Girls) and Chad Michael Murray (One Tree Hill). The series, based on novels by Virgin River author Robyn Carr, will make its U.S. debut in the fall after airing on Canada’s CTV earlier this year.
The CW will join Reel World Management, CTV (which is part of Bell Media) and Fremantle as producers of season two. That’s part of the network’s strategy for cultivating original scripted series under new owners Nexstar, as CW Entertainment president Brad Schwartz outlined to reporters in May.

Sullivan’s Crossing is one of The CW’s new Canadian imports for its fall schedule.
The series, which stars Chad Michael Murray, has already been renewed for a second season by Canadian broadcaster CTV and The CW.
It comes after The CW picked up the first season in April with plans to launch it at 8pm on Wednesdays on its fall schedule and will also air season two.
The series became the highest-rated Canadian drama launch in over two years on CTV. Production on season two will start later this year in Nova Scotia.
The series stars Batwoman’s Morgan Kohan as a star neurosurgeon who appears to have it all until her business partner is indicted for fraud and she finds herself charged with negligence. She leaves Boston to return to her home of Sullivan’s Crossing, a remote campground by her estranged father Sully, played by Gilmore Girls Scott Patterson.

Your prayers have been answered, “Virgin River” fans: The romance series has scored a two-season pickup, being renewed for both Seasons 4 and 5 at Netflix, the streaming service said Monday.
Starring Alexandra Breckenridge and Martin Henderson, “Virgin River” tells the love story of Mel Monroe (Breckenridge), who answers an ad to work as a midwife and nurse practitioner in the remote Northern California town of Virgin River, thinking it will be the perfect place to start fresh and leave her painful memories behind.
Per Netflix, the 10-episode third season of the romance series, which launched in July, “left fans with more questions about the residents of this small town after a funeral, a fire, a divorce, a hurricane and a new romance.”
Looks like with at least two more seasons to go, those fans will be getting answers — hopefully — and lots and lots more loving between Jack (Henderson) and Mel.

Netflix dropped the trailer for the third season of its romance series “Virgin River” on Friday, revealing Jack Sheridan’s (Martin Henderson) fate after the Season 2 finale ended with him bleeding out from a gunshot wound on the floor next to Melinda “Mel” Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge).
Luckily, the video shows us almost immediately that Jack is Ok, but he is going to need some downtime to recover from the injury and Mel is the biggest supporter of him staying in bed — for medical reasons and romantic ones.
Yes, these two lovebirds are finally, officially in a real relationship, which means things are about to get complicated in a different way, as the topic of having a baby together comes up between them — and pretty much everyone else in town. Mel might want to, but she’s obviously still traumatized by the death of her family. Jack might not want to...

Drama, drama, drama: “Virgin River” has been renewed for a third season, Netflix said on Friday.
That news means we’ll get some payoff on those Season 2 cliffhangers, like Jack (Martin Henderson) being shot, the whole Paige/Michelle’s (Lexa Doig) dead-husband’s-twin-brother thing, a child-sized wrench being thrown in Preacher’s (Colin Lawrence) plans to move to San Francisco and become a fancy chef and Doc (Tim Matheson) getting some mysterious — and seemingly bad — health news from another doc in another town.
Yeah, it’s A Lot.
No premiere date has been set for the upcoming Season 3. The second season debuted on Netflix on Nov. 27.
“Virgin River” follows a recently widowed big-city nurse (Alexandra Breckenridge) who moves to the redwood forests of northern California, where she meets an intriguing man (Henderson).
The series also stars Lauren Hammersley and Annette O’Toole. Joining the cast for Season 3 will be Zibby Allen and Stacey Farber.

Netflix has given series orders to two dramas based on popular romance-novel series.
“Virgin River” tells the story of Melinda Monroe, who answers an ad to work as a nurse practitioner in the remote California town of Virgin River thinking it will be the perfect place to start fresh and leave her painful memories behind. But she soon discovers that small-town living isn’t quite as simple as she expected and that she must learn to heal herself before she can truly make Virgin River her home. The show is based on the Harlequin book series of the same name by author Robyn Carr. There are now twenty books in the “Virgin River” series, and together they have sold more than 13 million copies.
Set to start production later this year, “Virgin River”is being produced for Netflix by Reel World Management and Roma Roth. Sue Tenney will serve as showrunner and executive producer.
