If you watched an action, sci-fi, or horror movie in the 1980s, there was a good chance it was produced by Cannon Films. The studio — perhaps the last great home of B-movie and exploitation classics — was founded in 1967 but hit its apex between 1979 and 1987, releasing scores of films that (mostly) no one would call high cinema but which delivered thrills, chills and plenty of blood, action, and fire on a budget.
Tapping into the massive market for both high and low concept fare — the 1980s equivalent of drive-in double bill fillers — Cannon, under the leadership of Israeli cousins Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, were perhaps best known for churning out chintzy crowdpleasers like the Chuck Norris-starring Missing in Action and The Delta Force along with a slew of Death Wish sequels.
But the company also produced titillating titles like Lady Chatterley’s Lover, slasher fare such as Schizoid and New Year’s Evil,...

It always comes back to this. As far as I can remember watching horror, there was always this kind of film showing on TV: ordinary folk, exposure to something awful (usually nuclear in nature), and then ensuing chaos. Of course I’m talking about the ‘50s and the Atomic Age of Horror, and starting with the title, 1977’s The Incredible Melting Man is intent on paying homage to them. Intent is a helluva word; full of optimism and purpose, it suggests a clear vision to be followed through. However, if it had been, we wouldn’t be left with this hilarious and heartfelt curiosity.
Released by American International stateside in December, Timm didn’t do great business nor were critics lining up to ladle praise upon it. Every review however did laud Rick Baker’s gooey makeup, and it has been considered the lone shining star in a vacant sky...

TV series sevelopment continues on the Crown International Pictures reboot of director William Sachs 1980 comedic science fiction feature "Galaxina" (1980):
"...in the year 3008, the crew of the 'Intergalactic Space Police' cruiser 'Infinity' is on patrol duty in deep space. The ship is captained by the incompetent 'Cornelius Butt' (Avery Schreiber) and his crewmen including first officer 'Sgt. Thor' (Stephen Macht), pilot 'Pvt. Buzz McHenry' (J.D. Hinton)...

Stratten, 'Playboy Playmate Of The Year' was killed in a murder/suicide shortly after the film's release and became the subject of director Bob Fosse's feature "Star 80" (1983).
Besides its homage and parodies of "Star Trek" (1966), "Star Wars" (1977) and "Alien" (1979), "Galaxina" is noted as having won the 'Audience Award' at the 1983 'Brussels International Festival of Fantasy Film'.

The solitary reason for this film’s existence is to watch a human being dissolve into a puddle of guts and gore over the course of 82 minutes and at this it succeeds mightily, thanks to the movie’s real star, make-up wizard Rick Baker. The film stars Alex Rebar as an astronaut just returned from a flight to Saturn where he was exposed to, what else, radiation. Soon he’s wandering the countryside eating flesh to stay alive while his own skin drops off his body like an over-cooked turkey. Director William Sachs’ offal opus was a good-sized hit and with that wonderfully straight-forward title, who could resist?...

If any movie deserved to be seen as one of the best worst movies of all time it would probably be The Incredible Melting Man, and no that is not an insult. The acting leaves much to be desired, most of the film is about a guy in make-up walking around the countryside and the story never really finds a right direction, but you know what? I like it, and more importantly this is a movie that shows that sometimes the makeup department (and more importantly, Rick Baker) can cement the movie into the memories of those who have seen it as something a little special.

The Incredible Melting Man is the ‘70s cult classic that saw special effects legend Rick Baker (Thriller, An American Werewolf in London, Men in Black) lend his hand to another memorable horror creature. The new Blu-ray and DVD editions arrive in time for Halloween on 13th October 2014. Originally starting life as a comedy under the title The Ghoul from Outer Space, The Incredible Melting Man has had remarkable staying power due to the credible comedic performances given by nearly everyone in the cast. Of course, the effects from Baker still manage to turn one’s stomach decades after they were put on film. Additionally, the score by Arlon Ober (and the Cosmic Consort Orchestra) provides a pitch-perfect accompaniment to the on-screen action. Finally, the film looks darn good. Some viewers have complained about the lighting being flat but the restored print makes the film look as good as it ever could be.

Humankind’s collision with otherworldly life forms can make for unforgettable cinema.
This article will highlight the best of live-action human vs. alien films. The creatures may be from other planets or may be non-demonic entities from other dimensions.
Excluded from consideration were giant monster films as the diakaiju genre would make a great subject for separate articles.
Readers looking for “friendly alien” films such as The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), It Came from Outer Space (1953) and the comically overrated Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) are advised to keep watching the skies because they won’t find them here.
Film writing being the game of knowledge filtered through personal taste that it is, some readers’ subgenre favorites might not have made the list such as War of the Worlds (1953) and 20 Million Miles to Earth (1957).
Now let’s take a chronological look at the cinema’s best battles between Us and Them.

Above: UK poster for Eno (Alphons Sinniger, UK, 1973). Designer: Blue Egg.
The most popular poster I’ve posted on my Movie Poster of the Day Tumblr in the past quarter—with over 1,000 likes and reblogs—has been this rarity that popped up at Posteritati this Spring. A British Double Crown (10" shorter than a one sheet) for a 24 minute documentary about the experimental music genius Brian Eno, made in 1973 at the start of his post-Roxy solo career, the poster’s popularity is no doubt due as much to the reverence Eno is held in as to its graphic design. But it is still a terrific poster, making simple yet brilliant use of two color printing and showcasing a multitude of Enos in all his glam rock glory. The text in the corner credits Blue Egg Printing and Design Ltd. and if anyone knows anything more about that company I’d love to hear about it.

To rate The Incredible Melting Man best ever movie about a guy who melts is like saying Snakes On A Plane was the best movie about snakes on a plane. Like the Sam Jackson hit, this B-movie from 1977 fondly recalls the 1950s movies from the likes of Roger Corman where a high-concept title is though up first, then a movie is filmed around it (though this one was updated with squishy makeup effects, gore, and boobs). The Incredible Melting Man is a stupid premise executed with tacky enthusiasm, an irresistible guilty pleasure impossible not to like.
Astronaut Steve West is the only survivor of a disastrous space-mission and carrier of a horrible disease that makes him radioactive and ….. his body is liquefying on him! William Sachs’ The Incredible Melting Man screenplay is a schlock riff on the 1955 Hammer film The Quatermass Xperiment (aka The Creeping Unknown) that doesn’t waste...

Chicago – Scream Factory, the horror branch of the great Shout Factory, continues to impress with an ambitious slate of catalog films making their HD debut in the coming months, many of which were announced at Comic-Con last month (“Nightbreed”!). They also seem to be upping their release rate, unleashing two horror flicks last week, John Carpenter’s beloved “The Fog” and the truly horrendous “The Incredible Melting Man,” a cultural curiosity but a crap film.
One of the many things so remarkable about the Shout Factory releases is the honesty drawn from the interview subjects on them. What other studio would not only land Jamie Lee Curtis for an extended interview to talk about not only “The Fog” but her filmography of that scream queen era in general and include the fact that she doesn’t particularly like John Carpenter’s follow-up to “Halloween.” “I am surprised that it has...

The Incredible Melting Man is a bad movie. Let us just get that out of the way up front. I own the majority of Scream Factory titles that have been released on Blu Ray. I refuse to purchase Dead Souls, because if Shout Factory’s release of Remains taught me anything, it’s that any movie produced for Chiller TV, is not a movie I wish to put inside of me. Every one of Scream Factory’s releases(Dead Souls not included) have arguably been some of the genre’s best, classic titles. This is not one of them. There may have been four or five of you out there, clamoring for a high definition home video release of this movie, but I would wager to say that, most consumers of Scream Factory titles, really don’t care that much. However, I can’t fault a company such as Shout/Scream,...

We’ve had quite a bit of Scream Factory news over the past couple of weeks and updates continue to roll in. The Incredible Melting Man is one of the titles getting a Blu-ray upgrade from Scream Factory and they have revealed the official cover art.
The 1977 cult classic was directed and written by William Sachs, and stars Alex Rebar as an astronaut who returns from a mission to Saturn and begins to slowly melt away: “A horror movie made in the classic style of the 1950s ‘B’ movies. Steve West (Alex Rebar) is the sole survivor of a space mission to Saturn. When he mysteriously develops a taste for human flesh, it soon transpires that his deadly eating habits are pain relief; as his own flesh is literally melting away…”
At this time, a firm release date has not been announced, but it is expected to be available this summer.

Indie Film Distribution/Production Company Rogue Arts has just signed a partnership agreement with Fairway Film Alliance to distribute films globally. The partnership began at Afm where three of Rogue Arts new titles were launched successfully. "We are creating these kind of relationships in order to be completely transparent with both our investors and our filmmakers. It is a great time of growth in our company", stated company founder, Kirk Harris. "Our goal is a new type of company where partnership with the filmmaker really means both the filmmaker and the distributor benefit from the proceeds and know step by step what is occurring with the films," stated Don Franken, also a Principal at Rogue Arts.
Rogue Arts has produced 8 films and Rogue Arts and Fairway Films Alliance has handled the distribution of more than 50 titles. Founded as a production company in 2004 by Actor/Filmmaker Kirk Harris, company executives now include Celebrity sports talent and marketing agent Don Franken, Retired Navy Special Forces Swcc Vernon Mortensen and Fairway Films Alliance's Marty Poole. "With over 20 years working film in film sales, and also as a filmmaker, I felt it was time to create a company by, with, and for the filmmaker" stated Fairway Films Alliance founder, Marty Poole. Another feature of the Rogue Arts and Fairway Film Alliance partnership is the unique blend of world sales, theatrical booking, digital content knowledge and PR and Marketing experience the principles have.
Recent produced titles include: The Kid: Chamaco, directed by celebrated Mexican producer Miguel Necoechea starring Martin Sheen, Kirk Harris and Gustavo Sanchez Parra. They also include the freshly completed Western Thriller The Sorrow, directed by Rogue Arts' Vernon Mortensen and starring Harris, John Savage and Michael Madsen.
Noted distribution titles include: "Flickering Lights" from Academy Award Winning Anders Thomas Jensen and starring Ulrich Thomsen and Mads Mikkelsen. Wim Wenders presents Michael Meredith's "Three Days of Rain" starring Peter Falk, Blythe Danner and Lyle Lovett and last but not least, "Spooky House" from director William Sachs starring Ben Kingsley and Mercedes Ruehl.
Rogue Arts titles have screened at the Sundance, Berlin, Toronto, Slamdance and Venice Film Festivals.
Recent titles that premiered at Afm were the FX action film "Time Warrior", Terrorist subway thriller "Red Line" and "The Sorrow". "Time Warrior" and "Red Line" were acquired through a new strategic alliance with the San Diego Film Festival to provide distribution for some of their premiere entries.
Additionally, Rogue Arts has two TV series in development as well as several feature projects of varying budgets in the pipeline. ...

Shout! Factory has been announcing new movies for their Scream Factory line every week and just revealed the titles of two more cult classic horror movies that they will be releasing to Blu-ray.

I’ve never been a fan of online reviews in which the writer eviscerates a film with unbridled nastiness.
These are often first-person tirades about how difficult the film was to endure and how they would rather "put an arm in a meat grinder, poke an eye out with a stick" or some other such intolerable action rather than watch the film again. I don’t believe that these kinds of “reviews” are productive or very fair to the people involved. But about 20 minutes into Hellacious Acres: The Case of John Glass, my mind began composing the very kind of snarky, mean-spirited essay I hold in such contempt. Quite frankly, my time may have been better spent with that meat grinder…
I watch a lot of really terrible independent films, many of them of the horror and science fiction variety.

My science-fiction itch was not scratched sufficiently by Andrew Niccol's disappointing In Time, which opens wide in the U.S. today, and so I sought solace in a film that I've never seen before, The Incredible Melting Man, which sounded from its premise like a horror-science fiction hybrid. Released in December 1977, The Incredible Melting Man is an endearingly awful creature feature, without much horror or science fiction, although it can boast of gloriously gloopy special effects and make-up by Rick Baker. Written and directed by William Sachs, who would go on to make such deathless classics as Van Nuys Blvd. (filmed in my hometown!), Galaxina, and Hot Chili, the film follows what happens to the only astronaut to survive a disastrous space flight to Saturn....

Seriously? I think I just peed a little. For years now fans of this classic flick had to endure either subpar DVD bootlegs taken from worn-out VHS tapes or hope it was available on Netflix for some instant streaming. Now MGM is officially bringing this bad boy home!

The sick and twisted minds behind the Melbourne Underground Film Festival have launched a brand new horror and sci-fi themed fest: Bloodfest Fantastique! Australia gets a lot more blood-soaked on June 10-18, nine nights of some of the most gruesome, terrifying and far-out films, past and present, from around the world.
While Muff has never been shy about screening genre films, Richard Wolstencroft — founder and director of both fests — is planning for his newest endeavor to simply be a celebration of his two favorite genres of filmmaking, without all the politicking hooha-ery that surrounds Muff.
So, there’s still a very underground-esque flavor to Bloodfest. The newer flicks in the festival have a scrappy, inventive, degenerate quality, from slice and dice em’s like Chris Sun’s Come and Get Me, Chad Ferrin’s Someone’s Knocking at the Door and Geoff Klein Bikini Girls on Ice; to monster flicks...

The Incredible Melting Man is a stupid premise executed with tacky enthusiasm, an irresistible guilty pleasure impossible not to like but one that is Not available on DVD.
