When “Fresh Off the Boat” premiered in 2015, only a handful of shows with a predominantly Asian American cast had ever aired in primetime — and none of them lasted long. But the success of that ABC sitcom, which spanned six seasons, 116 episodes and made it to syndication, finally inspired a long-overdue boom in series and films featuring Asian American leads — including “Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.,” from “Fresh Off the Boat” producing partners Jake Kasdan and Melvin Mar.
“Fresh Off the Boat” may have ended, but Kasdan and Mar — who have been based at 20th TV for more than a dozen years — are continuing to lead TV’s expansion in Asian American and Pacific Islander representation. As Aapi Heritage Month coincidentally gets underway this May, Kasdan and Mar currently have eight active TV and film projects, all showcasing different elements of the vast Aapi experience.

Evangeline Young has been cast as Charlotte Walton in “The Son in Law,” a comedy pilot from ABC.
“The Son in Law” stars Chris Sullivan as Jake, a single father who never thought he would love again, until Asha came along. The problem is that Jake, a hard-working plumbing contractor, is solidly middle class, while Asha hails from the equivalent of uber-wealthy South Asian royalty. Jake wants to marry Asha, and while he still needs to ask Asha’s father for his blessing, the real stumbling block is Asha’s loving but controlling mother, who doesn’t hide her feelings about Jake being all wrong for her daughter.
Charlotte aka Charlie is Jake’s only child, and is described as a smart, tough social-justice minded recent college graduate who is deeply in love with her boyfriend Ben, an Emt with whom she lives in a third story walk-up in the Bronx.

It doesn't look like viewers will ever get to see Friend Me. CBS has decided to shelve the comedy series and won't be airing the produced episodes.
Co-created by Ajay Sahgal and Alan Kirschenbaum, Friend Me revolves around two young best friends (Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Nicholas Braun) who move from Indiana to Los Angeles to work for Groupon. While one wants to recreate himself in the big city, the other wants to hold onto his hometown roots and relationships. Others in the cast include Amanda Lund, Dan Ahdoot, Parvesh Cheena, and Steve Talley.
The sitcom was ordered to series in May 2012 and was expected to debut mid-season. Kirschenbaum tragically took his own life in October 2012 and the network opted not to include the show in their mid-season plans in December.

With big screen funny folks like Jason Segel and Kat Dennings scoring big hits on TV with "How I Met Your Mother" and "2 Broke Girls," another comic actor is making the small screen leap. Christopher Mintz-Plasse will take the lead in the new CBS comedy "Friend Me." Penned by Alan Kirschenbaum ("Raising Hope") and Ajay Sahgal, the show will center on two friends, Evan (Mintz-Plasse) and Rob (Nicholas Braun of "Red State" fame), who move from Indiana to L.A. to work for GroupOn. That still doesn't explain why it's called "Friend Me" but maybe Facebook didn't clear their brand for the show. Sounds like it's right in the geeky wheelhouse that has made "The Big Bang Theory" such a smash hit, so this has potential. The series is currently at the pilot stage. [Deadline]

CBS on Friday doled out three more pilot orders, including a buddy sitcom, a romantic comedy and a potential series centered on the web phenom Groupon.

· Congratulations to Rachael Leigh Cook who has landed a leading role in Fox's comedy pilot Nirvana. In the potential series, the She's All That actress plays the white girlfriend of an Indian-American. The show follows two Indian-American brothers who have a disagreement with their immigrant parents as they adjust to American culture. Canadian-born Indian-American Ajay Sahgal is producing and directing the project, which is largely based on Sahgal's own experience adjusting to an American lifestyle and marrying a white woman (Lie to Me's Kelli Williams). NBC tinkered with the series, then called Nevermind Nirvana in 2004. [THR]

Rachael Leigh Cook, who is best known for her Laney Boggs portrayal in romantic comedy movie "She's All That", is about to take a small screen job as a regular. The 30-year-old actress has been tapped to play a female lead on Fox's comedy pilot "Nirvana".

They are the two comeback stories of this pilot season, projects developed years ago that have been resurrected and have landed orders at the broadcast networks.
The two comedies -- "Nirvana" at Fox and "Outsourced" at NBC -- have something else in common: They both are ensemble shows about Indians and Indian Americans.
A third project, a U.S. version of popular British comedy "The Kumars at No. 42," about an immigrant Indian family, also is poised for revival. Eight years after NBC took a stab at the format, the show's British producers are shopping it to U.S. networks, including FX.
