The Emmys have passed, the fall TV season has officially begun, and CBS is wasting no time with a jump into the current revival culture; the long-running show they’re eager to bring back isn’t a ’90s classic, but a spinoff of the barely-cold series “The Good Wife.” The murmurs, which began shortly after the series wrapped, have finally come to fruition and while CBS will host the project, it will do so through its online arm, CBS All Access. Ten episodes are currently slated with returning cast members Christine Baranski, Sarah Steele, and Cush Jumbo back in their former series roles. The new project will pick up a year after the finale and follow the financial ruin of a young attorney and her mentor Diane Lockhart. Filming on the digital series is set to begin in mid-October in New York and will premiere online in February 2017. The original series’ casting director,...

Josh Charles received his second Best Supporting Actor nomination this morning for playing (the late) Will Gardner on CBS’s The Good Wife. Sick with a cold and cough, he went back to bed after getting up early to let out his dog, Zeus—and learned of his nod when he rolled over and saw a congratulatory email on his iPhone. “Nothing super fancy or exciting, sorry,” he jokes to EW. “I’m really excited about it even if my voice doesn’t sound normal.”

Casting director Mark Saks of Mark Saks Casting describes "Person of Interest" as " 'The Equalizer' with a 'Big Brother' element" and adds that it was the highest-testing pilot for CBS in 15 years. Jim Caviezel and Michael Emerson star in the crime thriller about a presumed-dead former CIA agent who forms a partnership with a mysterious billionaire to prevent violent crimes in the streets of New York. They are new-style vigilantes with access to state-of-the-art surveillance technology and almost limitless wealth. Not surprisingly, they manage to antagonize the NYPD, especially homicide detectives Carter (Taraji P. Henson) and Fusco (Kevin Chapman)."It's a show with volume, and we will be populating three to four worlds," says Saks. "There will be lots of recurring roles." It is also a New York–based show, and the actors will reflect a spectrum—ethnically, culturally, socioeconomically, and agewise. Actors with that Gotham edge may well find a.

In this era of pocket-sized video cameras and "Star Trek"-esque PDAs, it's easier than ever for actors to be proactive about their careers. But does this brave new world extend to never leaving your house for an audition? After all, today's technology enables you to tape yourself in the comfort of your own home, then email or upload the result for a casting director's viewing pleasure.Feelings in the industry are decidedly mixed—but "virtual auditions" seem to be popping up more and more."It's not like it's a formal part of the process as of yet; it's just sneaking in," said casting director Michael Testa ("Cold Case," "Make It or Break It"). "When I release a breakdown, people call sometimes and say, 'Do you mind if so-and-so puts himself on tape?' and I don't mind at all. I've been getting more and more of that as time progresses.

Mark Saks' résumé goes from comedy ("The George Carlin Show") to drama ("Numb3rs") and back again. Casting veteran Dawn Steinberg has been appointed head of casting at Sony Pictures Television. Steinberg will oversee all casting on Sony's series and longform TV productions for network, cable and first-run syndication in her role as senior vp talent and casting. She reports to Russ Krasnoff, SPT's president of programming and production. Steinberg succeeds Mark Saks, who has left SPT after a two-year stint as senior vp casting. "Throughout her career, Dawn has displayed both a sharp eye and discriminating taste when it comes to finding talent," Krasnoff said. "She's not afraid to make bold choices, and the diverse and original casts she's put together reflect that spirit." Steinberg has spent the past two years working as a consultant to NBC Studios, where she helped assemble the casts for the Peabody-winning drama Boomtown, featuring Donnie Walhberg and Mykelti Williamson, and the peacock's upcoming comedies Happy Family and Coupling. Before that, Steinberg served stints as head of casting at Artists Television Group and at Big Ticket Television. At Big Ticket, Steinberg's casting discoveries included Mo'Nique, the star of the UPN sitcom The Parkers. A native of New York, Steinberg began her career casting off-Broadway productions.
