‘Paintings are still around, people still go to museums,’ the actor has said, trying to sound positive about the future of cinema. But if you crunch the numbers, this isn’t reassuring
Sometimes there is nothing so depressing as reassurance. Seth Rogen is currently making a Larry Sanders-style comedy for Apple TV+ entitled The Studio, in which a bunch of Hollywood executives collectively freak out about the imminent death of cinema as we know it. The good news is that Seth Rogen has used a new episode of Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast to announce how bullish he is about the future of cinema in real life. The bad news is that he had to invoke museums.
“I think if movies were going to go away, they would have a long time ago,” he said. “Paintings are still around. People still go to museums! There’s things flashier or...

What was old was extremely new on Netflix in January and even into this month.
Specifically, the Peter Farrelly-created dramedy series about addiction, Loudermilk, which was barely found in its original run on the now-unplugged AT&T Audience Network, became a must-see show on the streamer six-plus years after its original airing.
In Nielsen’s Top 10 for Streaming Originals (January 8-14), Loudermilk ranked No. 8 with 846 million viewing minutes.
But even before that list was published, Loudermilk was showing signs of life across the streamer’s own Top 10 charts. Loudermilk Season 1 was in the Netflix Top 10 most-viewed shows in the U.S. for four weeks with a peak rank of No. 4 during the week of January 15-21. Season 2 of Loudermilk ranked in the Netflix top 10 stateside during the week of July 28.

January 11, 1999, 25 years ago to the day, was Jon Stewart’s first night hosting The Daily Show.
The comedian took over from Craig Kilborn, who had hosted the Comedy Central show from July 21, 1996. Stewart’s first guest was Michael J. Fox, promoting Spin City.
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart went on to win the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Series for ten consecutive years between 2003 and 2012, before losing to The Colbert Report, a show that he exec produced, for a couple of years, and then coming back to win in 2015 in his final season.
It’s a run that Last Week Tonight with John Oliver looked like it might replicate with seven wins in the category – then known as Outstanding Variety Talk Series – starting in 2016.
However, Oliver is now competing on Monday night at the primetime Emmys in a new category, Outstanding Scripted Variety Series, up against Saturday Night Live and A Black Lady Sketch Show,...

All 7 seasons of the NBC comedy 30 Rock are available to binge on Hulu. Tina Fey created the show inspired by her experiences on Saturday Night Live, though the world of Tgs was wilder than SNL. 30 Rock was both a Hollywood industry satire and a universally relatable workplace comedy with career and dating foibles.

Succession is back for its fourth and final season. That means only 10 more chances to hear the memorable theme song, which got Showbiz Cheat Sheet thinking. HBO has quite a track record of memorable theme songs. They date back to linear TV, before skipping the credits was even an option, but even so, these are so good you wouldn’t want to skip them anyway.
Brian Cox | Macall Polay/HBO
Here are the 7 best theme songs to HBO original shows we thought of. Succession is on the list and its final season airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO.
‘The Larry Sanders Show’ theme song was better than real late night talk shows
Garry Shandling’s showbiz spoof The Larry Sanders Show got everything right about the industry. Shandling played a late night talk show host and the satire showed how fake everything was both on the stage and behind the scenes.

With the Community movie coming to Peacock it’s a good time to revisit the six seasons before the movie. When you graduate from the series like the study group graduated Greendale, you may want more. Here are some other shows that offer their own kind of surreal, self-referential live-action comedy if you liked Community.
L-r: Joel McHale, Alison Brie, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Gillian Jacobs | Justin Lubin/NBC/NBCU Photo Bank via Getty Images If you liked ‘Community’ you may have ‘Scrubs’ to thank
The medical comedy Scrubs predates Community on NBC. Narrated by new resident J.D. (Zach Braff), Scrubs could break the fourth wall at any time within J.D.’s head. These included fantasy sequences, which isn’t how Community broke the fourth wall, but allowed Scrubs to get surreal.
Scrubs did have its own movie within Sacred Heart Hospital though. J.D. was writing a horror script called Dr.

What does it mean to be "real" in entertainment anymore? Reality television has been massively popular for some time now, but it follows a script or is heavily edited to tell a specific story. Many are quick to point out that professional wrestling is "fake," but you wouldn't go to the theater and call a production of a Shakespeare play or "Phantom of the Opera" on Broadway "fake." Even movies that are presented as "true crime" or "biopics" end up only being inspired by true events.
Or does "real" refer to the emotions that the audience feels as a result of watching a story unfold? Is there realness in various forms of art because those that consume it take something away from the experience that makes them feel seen or that they can then apply to their own lives?
These are pretty deep questions and concepts to explore in an...

Audiences have been enamored by celebrities since the earliest days of show business. Over the years, red carpet events like the Met Gala exist purely to celebrate the personality and popularity of famous Hollywood A-listers. Some celebs were born for the hot white gleam of the spotlight, and bask in all the attention, while others shy away from it and focus on their craft.
Superstars like Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor struggled to have a private life throughout their careers. Monroe publicly admitted that she was expected to be a fantasy and that she never felt accepted for who she truly was, and Taylor was constantly criticized by the media and the public for her choice in love. The pressures of celebrity are most often associated with women, but famous men have their own crosses to bear.

Amanda Peet has been a staple on television screens since the mid-1990s, most recently seen as the eponymous character in “Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story.” But for the first time in her career, she has stepped behind the scenes to co-create and run a series. “The Chair,” bowing Aug. 20 on Netflix, stars Sandra Oh as Ji-Yoon, the titular head of a small university’s English department, while Jay Duplass is Bill, a grieving professor who comes under fire for an offensive gesture caught on camera. Their relationship is complicated not only by her becoming the boss, but also by calls for his cancelation.
“The Chair” deals in some themes that we’re seeing play out in a number of industries right now, including entertainment — from agism to people of color being undervalued at work to calls for a person’s cancelation. You have such a history in this industry,...

Muppets Now is the new Muppet show and it's unscripted! Yaaaaaaaaaay!!!
For years, the Muppets have been Disney’s unused puzzle piece. Despite being such a timeless and beloved corner of entertainment, Disney hasn’t been able to figure out how to best use Kermit and the rest in modern times. The 2011 movie The Muppets brought them back in style, but relied heavily on pressing nostalgia buttons. Its 2014 follow-up Muppets Most Wanted didn’t quite hit the same highs and so we got an ABC series, again called The Muppets, which focused on Kermit and Piggy’s post-break-up in a semi-improvisational, Larry Sanders Show, The Office, Curb Your Enthusiasm style. While it had its strong points, there was a lot of creative meddling and the show was unable to find its footing, and so it ended after one season.

Yes, Luke P. is finally (finally!) out of the picture, Bachelorette fans… but Hannah’s decisions aren’t getting any easier.
Monday’s season finale, part one — just four more hours to go, folks! — picks up right where we left off, with Peter, Tyler C. and Jed still standing at that rose ceremony in Crete, where they’ve seemingly been standing for weeks now. (Let’s hope the producers gave them a bottle of water, at least.) Luke P. has been escorted off, but Hannah still only has two roses to hand out, and she’s still not sure she’s making the right choice.

The late Rip Torn, who died July 9 at 88, had a career that included decade-spanning stage work, an Oscar-nominated performance in the film “Cross Creek,” and later turns in movies as wide-ranging as “Men in Black” and “Marie Antoinette.” But to legions of viewers, he’s best remembered as Artie, perhaps the one moral major character on HBO’s “The Larry Sanders Show.” The Emmy-winning performance was perhaps the best representation of Torn’s unusual blend of toughness and tender sentimentality, a turn that was as often profane as it was unexpectedly moving.
“The Larry Sanders Show” was a depiction of a world that was slipping away from its characters — Larry, played by the late Garry Shandling, is a would-be Johnny Carson figure, a network late-night host whose only real comic edge comes out when his talk show wraps for the night, as he berates himself. Rip Torn, who played Garry Shandling’s profane, fiercely loyal producer on HBO’s The Larry Sanders Show, co-starred in the original Men in Black films and was a major star of Broadway and Off Broadway during a seven-decade career, died today surrounded by family at his home in Lakeville, Ct. He was 88.
The prolific Torn played the unstoppable and unflappable Artie on Larry Sanders, which aired from 1992-98 and followed the behind-the-scenes and onstage antics of a successful late-night network talk show. Along with scoring a Supporting Actor in a Comedy Emmy in 1996, he was nominated for each of the show’s six seasons.
The year Torn won his Emmy, he also had been up for Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his turn on CBS’ Chicago Hope. In 2008, he earned his ninth and final Emmy nom, for his recurring role as Don Geiss on NBC’s 30 Rock.

Veteran actor Rip Torn, arguably best known for his role as irascible, foul-mouthed Artie on HBO’s The Larry Sanders Show, died Tuesday at his home in Connecticut. He was 88.
Torn earned an Emmy in 1996 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as Larry Sanders‘ uproariously devious Artie. He later appeared in seven episodes of NBC’s 30 Rock as General Electric’s faux CEO Don Geiss (a gig that netted him an Emmy nod for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series.) Additional TV credits included Columbo, Law & Order: Criminal Intent and Will & Grace.

“Hey, did you see that new documentary? The one about that great performer who died really young? And the other one about the musician/actor/comedian who was tragically taken too soon from us? Yeah, it was really sad — you think these talented people have these amazing lives, but I guess some artists are just really tormented by their demons.”

When it comes right down to it, the late Garry Shandling didn’t quite get into comedy for the laughs.
That conclusion comes from his close friend Judd Apatow, who plumbs Shandling’s long and sometimes tortured quest for enlightenment in The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling, the two-part HBO documentary that’s contending for Emmy nominations in multiple categories.
“Usually you get into comedy because something is troubling you. You’re trying to work out certain issues,” Apatow told Deadline. “What was interesting about Garry is he became a famous comedian because he thought it would help him figure out who he was. He didn’t do it because his primary interest was seeking fame and fortune. It really was about self-exploration.”

It’s a natural response when someone passes away, whether they’re a public figure or not, that we shouldn’t have to wait until someone dies to salute them for their achievements in life. Garry Shandling certainly wasn’t unappreciated during his day. He had two seminal comedy series (“It’s Garry Shandling’s Show” and “The Larry Sanders Show”), had a formative standup career, and, for a time, was a fixture of late-night TV.
But Judd Apatow‘s new documentary “The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling” doesn’t solely focus on the career that audiences were familiar with. Using a chronological approach, Apatow outlines how Shandling‘s career was in many ways intertwined with the personal life that so many never got to see. So while this 4 1/2 hour film feels like a career overview for a man who was both loved and misunderstood, it’s also a rare...

Garry Shandling had just paid for a tuna-melt sandwich when a dark one-liner about the human condition – about his human condition, anyway – popped into his head: "I was born in hospice." He liked it, maybe enough to use on stage, but with no notepaper available, he jotted down the joke on his tuna-melt receipt and stuffed it in a pocket. On a recent morning in Los Angeles, Judd Apatow reads from the receipt and grins. "That's pretty good," he says.

It took one day at a time, but Norman Lear’s long-gestating comedy project “Guess Who Died” finally has a home: NBC.
The Peacock network has given a pilot production commitment to the single-camera comedy, which Lear recently re-developed with Peter Tolan.
Set in a retirement village, “Guess Who Died” has been in the works for at least seven years. Lear had pitched the show around town several times, and expressed dismay that the show wouldn’t get made because of its focus on older characters.

Emmy-winning writer Peter Tolan (“The Larry Sanders Show,” “Rescue Me”) has joined the project as co-writer with Lear on the show, which is set in a retirement village. Lear has been working on the show for at least seven years, and frequently brings the project up in interviews. But until recently, he expressed dismay that it might never get made.
But now the legendary TV producer, at age 94, is on another hot streak. Following the recent successful remake of Lear’s 1970s sitcom “One Day at a Time,” now reimagined at Netflix with stars Justina Machado and Rita Moreno, Sony Pictures TV is developing “Guess Who Died” as a spec comedy script.

What’s it like when Judd Apatow asks to put your soul on screen? It’s a question that gets a laugh from his series stars and creators.
“I’d already given mine away,” Gillian Jacobs said.
Paul Rust agreed: “Soon as you step in L.A., man.”
Like a lot of jokes in a typical Apatow project, it’s funny because while it might not be true, it still feels real.

Did Republic’s serial-makers lose their marbles? This is an endurance test of a thriller, with 12 chapters that refuse to advance a story beyond the same repetitive ambushes and fistfights. It’s got monsters in the form of giant crawfish bred to… well, bred for almost no reason at all. With Phyllis Coates and Myron Healey. I tell you, watching this feels like watching an endless loop. But hey, it’s quite handsomely filmed!

Today marks a very happy occasion for television fans, one we’ve been clamoring for for some time — HBO has made the complete 1992-1998 run of “The Larry Sanders Show” available for streaming on HBO Go and HBO Now.
Starring Garry Shandling, Jeffrey Tambor and Rip Torn, the ensemble cast also included Jeremy Piven, Janeane Garofalo, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Thompson and Bob Odenkirk over the course of its six seasons. The groundbreaking comedy was notable for no shortage of reasons, from spotlighting future creators like Paul Simms and Judd Apatow and establishing HBO as a home for quality comedy to influencing countless other comedies in the same vein.
Since Shandling’s death earlier this year, people have been wanting to revisit the series in all its 1990s glory. In particular, the way “Larry Sanders” handled celebrity was one of its most memorable threads — the show allowed famous folk of...

If you were a TV critic from 1956 to 1976, you would have witnessed some big changes in the business: the rise and fall of the Western as the dominant primetime genre, or the color TV boom, or CBS' shift from silly rural comedies to socially conscious ones like All in the Family and M*A*S*H. If you covered the beat from 1976 to 1996, you would have written about Hill Street Blues and its many imitators, the classic years of SNL, and the early days of original cable programming. Almost any 20-year span would give you a front row seat to enormous artistic and technological change. As of this week, I've been professionally writing about television for exactly 20 years(*), and it's safe to say that the only two-decade period that featured a more radical transformation in how television was made and consumed would be back when the medium was first introduced into America's living rooms.

The shocking death of Garry Shandling earlier this week got us thinking about the Larry Sanders Show. The HBO program never got the attention and ratings of network sitcoms like Seinfeld, Friends and Frasier, but it was absolutely brilliant and has aged wonderfully. It's easy to imagine that Arrested Development, Curb Your Enthusiasm and The Office would have never happened where it not for the influence of the show.
