Ron Thompson, the unheralded actor who starred on Broadway for Charles Gordone in the Pulitzer Prize-winning No Place to Be Somebody and played father and son musicians for Ralph Bakshi in the animated cult classic American Pop, has died. He was 83.
Filmmaker Joe Black told The Hollywood Reporter that he found Thompson in his Van Nuys apartment on Saturday afternoon. The two had worked together in eight features, including Hate Horses (2017), Chicks, Man (2018) and Suffrage (2023), and Black visited him a couple times a week to help him out.
“For a man of his age, he was so full of life, he had such a presence,” Black said. He called Thompson “the Sam Jackson to my Tarantino.”
In 1969, Thompson originated off-Broadway the role of Shanty Mulligan in the Joseph Papp-produced No Place to Be Somebody, starring Ron O’Neal, then accompanied the drama to Broadway and on a tour around the country.

As per the official press release, Aurora’s Sunrise has the following synopsis: “In 1915, as WWI raged on, the Ottoman Empire singled out its entire Armenian population for destruction. Only 14 years old at the time, Aurora Mardiganian’s story was tragically relatable. Forced onto a death march towards the Syrian desert, she lost her entire family before being kidnapped and sold into sexual slavery. Four years later, through luck and extraordinary courage, she escaped to New York, where her story became a media sensation.”

Even if you don’t know the story of heralded photographer W. Eugene Smith or the Japanese fishing village of Minamata, you are likely familiar with the photograph Tomoko and Mother in the Bath. The 1971 black-and-white photo captures Ryoko Kamimura cradling her severely deformed daughter Tomoko, a victim of Minamata disease, in a Japanese bath. The photograph was one of many featured in a 1972 issue of Life magazine depicting the horrors of the disease, a form of Mercury poisoning that was caused by industrial wastewater from the Chisso Corporation’s chemical factory. Smith and his wife, Aileen Mioko Smith, lived in the town from 1971 to 1973 to document the effects of Minamata disease.
Now the story of the Smiths and Minamata has been brought to the big screen by filmmaker Andrew Levitas, starring Johnny Depp as Smith, Minami as Aileen and Bill Nighy as Smith’s editor Robert Hayes. Smith is portrayed as a challenging artist,...

In the U.S., homeless populations have increasingly turned for daytime shelter to public libraries, which provide not just relief from the elements and a relatively safe, calm environment, but also internet access that may be the only available means of job/housing networking or long-distance communication for most of them. Their presence is an annoyance to some, and a frequent trial to staff — but so far no one has tried to revoke general access to this last bastion of free indoor public space. (But give them time.)
Emilio Estevez’s “The Public” savvily deploys this circumstance for a commentary on up-to-the-moment social issues that’s also a curiously old-fashioned, uplifting dramedy redolent of Frank Capra and William Saroyan. With the writer-director himself as a classic fed-up Average Joe who leads a crew of lovable misfits (i.e. homeless people) in a largely comic rebellion against The Man, this somewhat anachronistic,...

The last film by James Whale (Frankenstein, The Old Dark House) is a forty-minute short based on a one-act play by William Saroyan. Whale had directed the play in 1942 as part of a show to entertain Us troops passing through La. The opportunity to film it arrived through strange circumstances.Millionaire Huntington Hartford loved his wife, Marjorie Steele, who was an actress. He decided to bankroll a series of short films showcasing her talents. Somehow Whale, who was thoroughly retired from film direction, was approached, and he welcomed the idea of adapting Saroyan's lonely parable to the screen. Harry Morgan was recruited as male lead.Like a lot of late works, this one needs approaching with a sympathetic attitude. The play is built around its title, a line shouted like a refrain throughout the piece. For some reason, Harry Morgan shouts every other line too. This was far from Morgan's debut,...

Though it’s based on William Saroyan’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “The Human Comedy,” very little about the turgid drama “Ithaca” feels believably, genuinely human. Meg Ryan‘s choice of literary adaptation for her directorial debut may have been too ambitious: The overall effect, while earnest, is disjointed, dreary and oddly structured. Seemingly pointless scenes drag. The characters feel like cardboard cutouts, and the story is so deliberately paced as to feel tedious. One of the few positive things that can be said about this clunky World War II coming-of-age drama is that the folky score, by John Mellencamp, has a low-key appeal.

Clip It: Each day, Jon Davis looks at the world of trailers, featurettes and clips and puts it all in perspective. It's not usually surprising when a well known actor tries their hand at directing. They're already creative people, they spend all day on set, they have a lot of experience with the performance aspect of filmmaking, so it makes a lot of sense. Meg Ryan's directorial debut Ithaca is a little more unexpected because she's been around so long and hasn't done any high profile producing or much else on the other side of the camera until now. That doesn't mean she doesn't have the chops, it's really cool to see a well known creative person do something different. From my admittedly myopic standpoint, the only indication she had a yearning to break into new territory was her performance in Courage Under Fire. Cast way against type, Meg Ryan played a tough-as-nails,...

William Saroyan’s novel The Human Comedy is a sort of retelling of Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, with elements of Greek mythology carefully woven into the story of two brothers from Ithaca, California during World War II. It began its life as a screenplay written for MGM, but after a falling out between its author and the studio, it was reworked into a novel, which became an instant bestseller in 1943. Concurrently, the abandoned script was rewritten by Howard Estabrook and released as a film the same year, garnering numerous Academy Award nominations and a win for Best Story. Though the celluloid version was received well, The New York Times noted director Clarence Brown’s reliance on “gobs of cinematic goo.” Maybe it’s the fault of the source material, because those gobs seem to be back for an encore.

The selling point for some when it comes to Meg Ryan‘s directorial debut Ithaca will be a reunion with her Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail, and Joe Versus the Volcano co-star Tom Hanks. However, the first trailer has arrived today, and they certainly aren’t the central focus. Instead, the drama — also starring Sam Shepard, Hamish Linklater, and Jack Quaid — follows the story of a younger brother whose sibling heads to WWII and he’s the bike messenger in his town.
“There was a day I thought, ‘Oh, man. I can’t protect my kid from everything.’ It’s a difficult moment,” Ryan tells EW about the genesis of the project. “I think it speaks to the complicated things happening [in the world], in the sense of community and cultivation of an individual’s integrity – what Saroyan believes are important antidotes. Hopefully Ithaca is about how fierce and frail life really is.

"There will always be pain in this world, Homer, and a good man will seek to take the pain out of things." Momentum Pictures has debuted the first official trailer for the film Ithaca, the feature directorial debut of actress Meg Ryan, who also stars in this. Based on William Saroyan's novel titled The Human Comedy, the story is about a bike messenger, played by Alex Neustaedter, who delivers letters during World War II in the 1940s. One letter in particular, however, will change him forever. The full cast includes Sam Shepard, Meg Ryan, Tom Hanks, Hamish Linklater, Jack Quaid, Molly Gordon and Gabriel Basso. This looks like a fairly nice, harmless indie drama to see this fall. There definitely is an indie feel to it, not in a good way, but I'm hopeful that the emotions in the story shine through in the end. Give this a watch below.

Another sad day in Hollywood…
From the AP:
Lauren Bacall, the slinky, sultry-voiced actress who created on-screen magic with Humphrey Bogart in “To Have and Have Not” and “The Big Sleep” and off-screen magic in one of Hollywood’s most storied marriages, died Tuesday at age 89.
Bacall, whose long career brought two Tonys and a special Oscar, died in New York. The managing partner of the Humphrey Bogart Estate, Robbert J.F. de Klerk, said that Bacall died at home, but declined to give further details. Bacall’s son Stephen Bogart confirmed his mother’s death to de Klerk.
She was among the last of the old-fashioned Hollywood stars and her legend, and the legend of “Bogie and Bacall” — the hard-boiled couple who could fight and make up with the best of them — started almost from the moment she appeared on screen. A fashion model and bit-part New York actress...

Good news Tom Hanks fans – it looks as though the Forrest Gump star is in talks to reunite with his recurring on-screen romantic interest, Meg Ryan, in the upcoming Ithaca.
The film, based on the classic 1943 William Saroyan novel The Human Comedy, follows the story of a 14-year-old boy who finds himself entrusted with the task of looking after his remaining family while his brother is off fighting in World War II. The novel is a wonderful tale about the effects war has, not only on those directly fighting, but the millions of people left grasping for normality back home.
The adaptation would mark the first time Hanks has worked with his Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail co-star Meg Ryan since those two staples of the romantic genre – and would also sees them working behind the camera as director (Ryan) and executive producer (Hanks). It’s rumored...

After initial reports suggested that their next collaboration would be strictly off-screen, it seems that frequent co-stars Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan may reunite on film after all.
The Hollywood Reporter writes that Hanks is in negotiations to make a small cameo in "Ithaca," Ryan's directorial debut in which she's also starring. Hanks had previously signed on in a behind-the-scenes role to executive produce the film through his Playtone company.
If things pan out, this would mark the fourth time -- and first time in 16 years -- that the pair have starred together on the big screen, following "Joe Versus the Volcano," "Sleepless in Seattle," and "You've Got Mail."
"Ithaca" is an adaption of William Saroyan's 1943 novel "The Human Comedy," and focuses on a 14-year-old bike messenger delivering telegrams during World War II, and the war's effect on his hometown and his family. Hanks would play the boy's father.

After appearing together in Joe Versus the Volcano, Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail, Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan look set to reunite in the big screen adaptation of William Saroyan’s classic 1943 novel The Human Comedy. It marks the directorial debut of Ryan and she will start shooting in Virginia next month.
Hanks is closely involved in the project as an executive producer, so the fact that he’s willing to make a cameo in the World War II set coming of age drama perhaps shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise.
The novel was adapted by Band of Brothers scribe Erik Jendresen, and he obviously worked with Hanks on that critically acclaimed HBO series. Sam Shepard, Melanie Griffith and Jack Quaid have so far also been confirmed as starring in the movie. Janet Brenner and Laura Ivey are producing.

Dust off those mid-’90s portmanteau names because Megahanks is back in business. Tom Hanks is in talks to appear in his old Nora Ephron buddy Meg Ryan’s directorial debut, Ithaca, in a small but significant role as the father of a boy whose life is dramatically changed by war.The film, an adaptation of William Saroyan’s 1943 novel The Human Comedy, is set in California's San Joaquin Valley during the War years. Its protagonist is a telegraph bike messenger whose brother is fighting overseas and who is thus charged with looking after his widowed mum, big sis and young brother. Hanks plays the boy’s dad in a role that will presumably unfold in early, first-act appearances or in flashbacks, unless screenwriter Erik Jendresen has added a supernatural element to the story and a Zombie Hanks will be grrrrnnnffff’ing his way around small-town America. That seems unlikely.

Mickey Rooney dead at 93: Four-time Oscar nominee, frequent Judy Garland co-star may have had the longest film career ever (photo: Mickey Rooney ca. 1940) Mickey Rooney, four-time Academy Award nominee and one of the biggest domestic box-office draws during the studio era, died of "natural causes" on Sunday, April 6, 2014, at his home in the Los Angeles suburb of North Hollywood. The Brooklyn-born Rooney (as Joseph Yule Jr., on September 23, 1920) had reportedly been in ill health for some time. He was 93. Besides his countless movies, and numerous television and stage appearances, Mickey Rooney was also known for his stormy private life, which featured boozing and gambling, some widely publicized family infighting (including his testifying in Congress in 2011 about elder abuse), his filing for bankruptcy in 1962 after having earned a reported $12 million (and then going bankrupt again in 1996), his eight marriages — including those to actresses Ava Gardner, Martha Vickers, and Barbara Ann Thomason...

Meg Ryan is directing her first feature film, Ithaca, an adaptation of the 1943 William Saroyan novel The Human Comedy reports EW. She will star in the film as well with Sam Shepard and Melanie Griffith. Interesting note is that Tom Hanks, who Ryan starred with in Sleepless In Seattle and the underrated You’ve Got Mail, will be an executive producer on the project.
The Human Comedy, written for Meg Ryan’s version by Band of Brothers producer Erik Jendresen, is about a teenage telegram delivery boy in small-town America during World War II, witnessing the impact of the conflict on those he delivers messages to. Ryan has been quiet for a few years, the last time I saw here she appeared for a brief moment in an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. It’s good to have her back, safe and sound.
