Fairy tales, in their undiluted forms, need no help when it comes to being creepy and horrifying. However, the Disneyfication of these classic stories makes it rather easy to forget their morbid beginnings. In the case of Cinderella, most modern adaptations of this quintessential rags-to-riches tale rarely bring up the violent aspects. All of that has been long removed in favor of safer elements, such as fairy godmothers and anthropomorphic mice. Yet, when reimagining the flaxen servant-turned-princess as someone who seeks “bloody vengeance,” Tom Jolliffe looked to the past; the Cinderella’s Revenge screenwriter found inspiration in the character’s gruesome roots.
The Brothers Grimm did not come up with Cinderella (or Aschenputtel) all on their own, but their familiar variation provides part of the source material for Cinderella’s Revenge. Charles Perrault is also credited, seeing as his French version (Cendrillon) was the first to feature the fairy godmother,...

How distraught is Annette, the severely troubled British mother of two played by Daisy Ridley in “Magpie?” She has gotten a short angular haircut, one that might, in another context, be the height of chic (very Isabella Rossellini). Except that the movie uses it as a symbolic expression of her trauma, like Mia Farrow’s iconic Vidal Sassoon cut in “Rosemary’s Baby.” Annette, who’s on some serious medication, looks at a mirror until it breaks. Does she have telekinetic powers? No, she broke it with her hand (which bleeds into the sink), but the force of her repressed rage is palpable. Ben (Shazad Latif), her British Indian husband, is a noted author, and every comment she makes about his work is a sly dig. She speaks in brief, clipped “civilized” phrases. At one point a bird crashes into the window of her home. The whole atmosphere of the film...

As the daughter of the legendary hairstylist, Vidal Sassoon, Eden Sassoon is no stranger to glitz and glamour. Her family is practically Los Angeles royalty, and her father worked with some of the most well-known people in the entertainment industry. For that reason, it only made sense for her to be a part of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills crew. Although she was never an official cast member, she appeared on the show as a ‘friend’ during the seventh season. She quickly became known for her outspoken nature. Her reality TV days may be over for the time being,

In his latest book about Hollywood, author Sam Wasson uses interviews and books — such as autobiography “Roman by Polanski” — to craft a novelistic tale about the making of the iconic 1974 movie “Chinatown.” The first chapter, “Justice,” starts off with the romance between actress Sharon Tate and young director Roman Polanski, as he casts her in his 1967 film, “The Fearless Vampire Killers.” Our excerpt (slightly edited for length) is below.
Duty was her pattern. She was a smiler, an actress.
Sharon signed with Ransohoff at nineteen. Dutifully, she faced Hollywood with professional dedication, taking courses in singing, dancing, and acting, the latter with Jeff Corey in the fall of 1963. “An incredibly beautiful girl,” Corey reflected, “but a fragmented personality.” Self-disclosure was a problem, so Corey one day put a stick in her hand and demanded, “Hit me, do something, show emotion!” Beauty was not enough. And she knew she wouldn’t be beautiful forever.

Welcome to this week’s Lucha Underground review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have the Gift of the Gods battle royale, as well as a big main event, so let’s get to it, before I croak.
Match #1: Jake Strong beat Big Bad Steve, Aerostar, Pj Black, Hernandez, Dante Fox and King Cuerno – Battle Royale Match For #1 Contendership To The Gift of the Gods Title
My Take: 2 out of 5 - This was a squash that made the other wrestlers look weak, but made Strong look like an embodiment of his name. There isn’t much to say about all of this, other than I hate it when other athletes get ignored for one person. Strong doesn’t need to be put over other people like this and would have been better off being booked based off of his successes in the WWE. Strong could...

The best thing about the otherwise-abominable “Smallfoot” is the concept: A community of creatures feared by humans — in this case, yetis with giant, bendy bodies and silky CG hair — consider people to be just as frightening, with both sides going far out of their way to avoid the species they don’t understand. That’s a solid idea now, and that was a solid idea when the folks at Pixar came up with it 24 years ago. The problem is, “Smallfoot” is not a Pixar movie. It’s the latest offering from Warner Animation Group, which essentially takes the hook for “Monsters Inc.” (hatched way back in 1994) and turns it into a heavy-handed civics lesson.
According to the credits, “Smallfoot” is based on a book called “Yeti Tracks” by Sergio Pablos, the brain behind “Despicable Me,” but there is no trace of the book’s existence online. In fact, it’s...

I have never felt sorry to have missed the 1960s (I didn’t come along until the final few months of that decade) until I saw the brilliantly thrilling documentary My Generation last year at London Film Festival. Marc Jacobs is no stranger to creating some of the boldest, most talked-about and at times controversial looks for his New York Fashion Week runway shows. And this season is no different.
From gigantic colored dreadlocks to grungy top hats to colorful head scarves, the designer and Redken Global Creative Director and lead hairstylist Guido Palau always push the boundaries when it comes to the models’ hairstyles each season. This time, Jacobs wanted to play with hair accessories again, and put almost all of the models in hijab-like colorful scarves wrapped around their head and neck and wide brimmed black top hats.

For many, the story of Fleetwood Mac begins with the 1974 arrival of Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, the talented yet combustible American duo who ignited an explosive string of hits that continue to define the band. But Mick Fleetwood wants to move past those rumors. Fans of the group’s pop jewels would hardly recognize their original incarnation as one of the most respected British blues bands of the ’60s. Now the founding drummer is telling the tale of those formative years in Love That Burns: A Chronicle of Fleetwood Mac, Volume One 1967–1974, a lavish new book by Genesis Publications due out Sept.

One of the many treats at this year's Il Cinema Ritrovato festival of restored or rediscovered films was a retrospective of the works of Helmut Käutner, who has been known and admired for a few select works but whose larger oeuvre is rarely screened. Curators Olaf Möller and Christoph Huber explained that this was partly because the German director's comedies often deal with German current affairs of the day in a way which makes them seem obscure even to modern German audiences. But one humorous movie proved timeless.Käutner began his career during WWII, but never seems to have been seriously tainted by associations with the Nazi regime. Indeed his great successes shot during wartime, Grosse Freiheit No. 7 (1944) and Under the Bridges (1946) apparently made the authorities uncomfortable: framed in a setting that's not-quite period and not-quite alternate reality, where the war simply does not exist, they seemed...a touch defeatist.

No surprise, gothic rocker Marilyn Manson felt right at home on the set of Wgn America’s period thriller “Salem.”
The show, which returns for its third season on Wednesday night, adds several new characters this season – including Manson as the sadistic barber/surgeon Thomas Dinley. The set for Dinley’s office includes strange, dangerous-looking surgical instruments and bottles of formaldehyde with things floating in it.
“He walked in and said, ‘Oh, I’ve got that at home, I’ve got that at home,'” said executive producer Brannon Braga. “He fit right in.”
Manson (who also produced the show’s theme song) plays a character based on the real-life 17th century barbers who would also slice patients open for surgery. “He’s kind of a cross between Vidal Sassoon and Jack the Ripper,” Braga said. “There’s a little Sweeney Todd in there. He’s a human aligned with the witches,...

David’s Quick Take for the tl;dr Media Consumer:
Roman Polanski made a massively successful transition to Hollywood filmmaking in this iconic horror-thriller classic of the psychologically disorienting variety. All the elements at play come together with the kind of perfect synchronization that signals the beginning of a new era in cinema: Mia Farrow’s star-making performance as a naive young wife living through a worst nightmare scenario, a flawless gradual atmospheric transition from seeming everyday normalcy into deeply disturbing paranoia, unsettling pivots between charming oddball humor and creeping, continually intensifying dread, and a perfectly timed interjection of quotidian satanism as practiced by one’s next door neighbors, when the taboos were still intact and capable of delivering maximum shock value. Rosemary’s Baby opened up new territory for mass audiences to experience intense levels of anxiety that didn’t depend on directors resorting to jump scenes, gratuitous violence,...

On a June visit to the Doctor Who studios in Cardiff, we enjoyed a round-table chat with Peter Capaldi about series 9…
Despite being hamstrung by a list of not-for-discussion topics as long as the Mara (plot specifics, new monsters, returning characters, series arcs…), you can always rely on Peter Capaldi to fill an interview to the brim.
It helps that he’s fluent in nerdy Doctor Who detail, from anecdotes about his old pal Jim, designer of the original Zygons, to being able to reel off the name of Jon Pertwee’s season eight stuntman, to chatting about Chumblies.
Along with a handful of fellow journalists at the Cardiff studios earlier this year, we spoke to Capaldi about all of the above, series nine, looking back at his first year in the role, his own fandom, and more...

Okay. Hear us out on this kind of crazy Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting comparison. You know when you used to get your hair cut in the '90s (maybe in a place at the mall called Contempo Couture Cuts? Just us?) and there would be those giant books featuring dozens and dozens of haircut options (that all kind of looked the same). That's exactly what Mrs. Ryan Sweeting looks like in this outfit! If Vidal Sassoon could see this look, he'd totally get what we mean. Not only is the CBS star's midnight blue top and bottom combo a total throwback to '95, but we haven't seen hair that sharp since Paula Abdul ruled the airwaves (though hers was more of a puffed bang situation with sharp edges surrounding,...

Did Ashley Tisdale just get a bridal makeover? Nah, just a fresh crop for the summer, according to her hairstylist Nikki Lee of West Hollywood's Nine Zero One Salon who created the "long shattered bob." "She's been itching for change so she figured this would be fun for summer. She hasn't had short hair in a long time—since The Suite Life of Zach and Cody—so she was a little nervous but as soon as we cut off the length she fell in love." So what makes the lob—which tapers off at the actress' shoulders—a shattered one? "Instead of it looking like a classic Vidal Sassoon bob, which is very blunt, there's texture to the ends. This gives the look...

The TV remake of Rosemary's Baby is just smart enough that its badness really stings. If you want to get technical, it's not really a "remake," but another stab at adapting Ira Levin's novel. The first, of course, was Roman Polanski's classic 1968 version, starring Mia Farrow as the devil baby incubator in the Vidal Sassoon cut and John Cassavetes as her actor husband, a coldly ambitious boor who pimped wifey to Old Nick for career success. This miniseries version keeps some memorable images and shocks from the Polanski version and adds more plot, characters, gore, and dream sequences, and relocates the whole thing from New York City to Paris. Why?As written by by Scott Abbott and James Wong (an X-Files veteran), and as directed by the often-terrific Agnieszka Holland (Olivier, Olivier; The Secret Garden), this Baby is such a slog that no sooner do you grab hold of an allusion,...

The Iris Prize Festival held every year in Cardiff, UK, is a gay short film festival. They give out an annual “Iris Prize”– the only short film prize in the world which provides the winning filmmaker with funding, support and guidance to make a new film. This year the festival will run from October 8-14, 2014 and they’ve announced their opening night film: Jayson Bend: Queen and Country.
We’ve been pining for a gay take on James Bond for years now, and this short film might just be the ticket. It stars Canadian actor, Davis Brooks as Jayson Bend, a 009 agent trying to take down some sort of villainous, Vidal Sassoon-esque hair mogul.
Okay, the plot seems sort of silly, but the special effects look great and we’re totally feeling sexy agent Jayson Bend. Here’s hoping a future trailer will give us a better look at...

London, Mar 6: The Swinging Sixties has been voted as the best decade for hairstyles.
The beehive, the bob and the Beatles-style mop top all helped to make the era a cut above the rest.
A third of people in a survey put the Sixties in Number 1 spot, while Marilyn Monroe's blonde locks and the quiffs sported by Elvis Presley and James Dean took the 1950s into second place with 27 percent of the vote, the Daily Express reported.
As for the 1980s, famed for the mullet, the backcomb and the tight perm, it's clearly the decade the hair-conscious would rather forget, polling only one percent.
In contrast, it is Audrey Hepburn's iconic beehive, Twiggy's pixie cut, Mary Quant's Vidal Sassoon bob and the floppy rock.

A demonic baby returns to the big screen today with the found footage film Devil’s Due, which quite frankly makes this week the absolute perfect time to go back and revisit devil baby flicks from the past. Though movies like It’s Alive and Grace should by all means be on any given list of films that fall into that category, there’s one that they owe it all to, and only one that did it better than any other; Rosemary’s Baby.
Proving that the story is as powerful, effective and relevant today as it was when the film was released in 1968, Rosemary’s Baby is in the midst of being turned into a four-hour long miniseries for NBC, which is another reason why now’s the perfect time to either discover or rediscover the classic horror film. So before you go see Devil’s Due this weekend,...

NBC's new take on Rosemary's Baby has cast its lead. Star Trek's Zoe Saldana will be playing Rosemary...
Even being charitable, very few people seem to think NBC's planned Rosemary's Baby miniseries is a good idea. Might the addition of Avatar, Star Trek, and later on this year, Guardians Of The Galaxy's Zoe Saldana in the lead warm up anticipation for the project?
Saldana will be playing the role a Vidal Sassoon-ed Mia Farrow made her own in Roman Polanski's 1968 feature film of Ira Levin's horror novel. The miniseries, which sets the action in modern-day Paris, is to rework the tense tale of pregnancy and paranoia for release later this year or early next.
American Horror Story writer James Wong is co-scripting the series with Scott Abbott. Read more about Rosemary's Baby on Den of Geek, here.

Television and stage producer known for Auf Wiedersehen, Pet and Birds of a Feather
The television producer Allan McKeown, who has died aged 67 of prostate cancer, created the groundbreaking Witzend Productions with the sitcom writers Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais and had hits on both sides of the Atlantic. It was one of the earliest independent production companies outside the British broadcasting establishment to find success within it.
A prime example of Witzend's attempts to push the boundaries of the medium – and McKeown's credit as executive producer – was Auf Wiedersehen, Pet (1983-86). The series, about a group of itinerant British builders in Germany – developed by Clement and La Frenais from an idea by Franc Roddam – went beyond the sitcom format to become one of the first in the comedy-drama genre.
ITV at first had no plans to make a second series but backtracked when up to 13 million viewers tuned in.
