In 1962, artists Wally Wood and Norman Saunders painted out a series of horrifically violent trading cards featuring large-brained alien critters attacking Earth, gleefully killing the U.S. soldiers, severing people's heads, and using their advanced technology to grow Earth's insects into murderous monsters. Called "Mars Attacks!," the trading cards were numbered and, when arranged properly, told a linear story of the whole Martian invasion, and how Mars, nearing an explosive cataclysm, needed to invade Earth for purposes of recolonization. The Martian invasion was followed a successful Earth counterstrike back on Mars, wherein a human force blew up the Martian cities and killed the disgusting little monsters once and for all. Then Mars explodes.
The "Mars Attacks!" cards were most certainly inappropriate for children, so of course kids wanted them right away. Because of the violent images on the cards, many concerned parents groups successfully sued to have them removed from comic book stores.

“Criminals are a superstitious cowardly lot, so my disguise must be able to strike terror into their hearts. I must be a creature of the night.” Those were the words uttered by Bruce Wayne mere seconds before a bat fortuitously flew in his window, making him decide to take on the persona of a winged mammal to fight crime. In the process, he ushered in a new kind of superhero: One who is just an ordinary man without powers who utilizes his wealth, intelligence, and physicality to bring evildoers to justice.
The Caped Crusader’s origin is so firmly embedded into our cultural landscape that even those only vaguely familiar with comics lore could easily recount it for you, so I won’t waste time recapping it here. What I will say however is that Batman – created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger in 1939 – is...

For over 80 years, trading cards have been an essential part of collectors’ lives. Whether baseball cards or Garbage Pail Kids, the card collecting bug bites early and often. This seems doubly true when it comes to cards inspired by the beloved heroes and villains of DC and Marvel Comics, who have been the subject of countless non-sport lines across the decades.
These companies (and their independent peers) have released comic book characters into the pop culture landscape who have impacted our lives in ways that cultural anthropologists are still scratching their heads trying to figure out. And so we wanted to present to you a history of superhero trading cards via the genre’s most memorable offerings.
Just be warned that we can’t be held responsible for the desire that the following collectibles will stir deep within you.

Before it became a movie (1996), "Mars Attacks" was a science fiction themed trading card series, released in 1962, featuring illustrations by artists Wallace Wood and Norman Saunders.
In that scenario, the invasion of Earth by 'Martians' is under the command of a corrupt Martian government who conceal the fact from the martian populace, that Mars is doomed to explode and therefore proposes a colonization of Earth.
The cards depict futuristic battle scenes and bizarre methods of Martian attack. The story...

Mars Attacks • Abrams ComicArt • hardcover $19.95, also available in electronic format. Publication date: October 1, 2012
There’s a seminal moment in every weirdo’s life where we experience something so outrageous our worldview is altered severely and forever. For Ray Bradbury and Michael Moorcock, it was Edgar Rice Burroughs. For nascent Nasa scientists, it was Ray Bradbury and Buck Rogers. EC Comics begat a generation of filmmakers, satirists, and cartoonists. I have no doubt we will be appreciating the influence of The Simpsons and South Park as its early adopters enter the creative workplaces.
For me, it was Mars Attacks.
I love to collect things. I suspect if comic books were unnumbered I wouldn’t have made it to the Marvel Age. So I would dutifully check out the counter-spaces at my local drug stores to see what the Bazooka Joe boys at Topps were offering in the realm of what we now call “non-sports cards.

For us old-school horror/sci-fi fanatics out there, Mars Attacks was one of the coolest and goriest properties we've ever seen! And, no we're not talking about the Tim Burton movie.
We're talking about a new book from Abrams ComicArts to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the highly collectible cards: the first ever hardcover collection Mars Attacks!
Originally a series of science-fiction trading cards produced in 1962 by The Topps Company, the controversial cards were thought too graphic by the general public but were loved by the series’ devoted followers and were later used as inspiration for the 1996 Tim Burton movie of the same name. Depicting the gruesome invasion of Earth by Martians, the story unfolds over the course of the fifty-five cards, showing futuristic battle scenes with Martians and their cruel, often bizarre methods of attack and torture.

You're going to love these! This is an awesome collection of retro 1966 Batman trading cards created by artist Norman Saunders, who is also known for creating the classic, banned Mars Attacks! cards This is the same Mars Attacks! that Tim Burton eventually adapted into a film. This card art is just so damn cool! Batman and Robin managed to get themselves stuck in some crazy situations. If you think about it, some of these cards are actually pretty terrifying--how are the 1966 Batman and Robin still alive!?

Idw Publishing report they have teamed with Topps to offer new comic books based on "Mars Attacks", the 'space adventure' bubblegum trading cards created in 1962, then adapted into the 1996 feature "Mars Attacks!" by director Tim Burton.
"We are excited to be partnering with Topps on this classic brand," said Greg Goldstein, Idw’s Chief Operating Officer.
"Mars Attacks" was created by Len Brown and Woody Gelman, after Brown was 'inspired' by illustrator Wally Wood's 1950's cover to EC Comics' "Weird Science" #16.
The cards were illustrated by salacious, crime pulp magazine cover illustrator Norm Saunders.
Topps revived the franchise in the mid 1990's with a second card set, comic book series and toy line.
"When looking for a comics partner for Mars Attacks, we wanted a publisher with the right creative sensibilities and an appreciation of our brand’s fifty-year legacy," said Ira Friedman, Topps/VP, Global Licensing. "There’s...
