In February 1972, once the two children from his previous marriage had grown, he and wife Bunny left Malibu for Pitcairn Island and spent three years living on a boat in the South Pacific, eventually ending up in New Zealand, where they sold the boat. This experience inspired his novel Overboard, which was made into the 1978 TV movie
Overboard (1978), for which he also wrote the teleplay.
